Big fan of this bit of speculation! Although, I wholely believe that Aldrich is none other than Smough. After defeating Aldrich, Smough's armor is readily available to purchase in Firelink. This could easily be chalked up to the fact that it's the same arena you defeated Smough in previously, but as you've said countless times, nothing in coincidence in Souls. Smough was obviously a glutton due to his massive size and to become a "devourer of gods" it would make perfect sense that if that were the path you'd want to choose, you'd devour the one closest to you first. Perhaps after Ornstein left his post, Smough decided that he wanted a change of pace as well at some point. Albeit it wouldnt make much sense. Cuz astora was destroyed even before ds1 and we are led to believe that aldrich existed after the linking of the fire became a cycle.
I love the speculation that connects these fringes aspects of souls-lore. I was pondering just the other day on the nuances of being the "first of the dead" vs Agedayne's description of "the one who gave us the first death". and the ds2 Darkdrift's description as "wielded by the one who gave us the first death"... Although I prefer the direct line of Sulyvahn's emergence from the painted world, visiting the profaned flame, creating the coup, as a more recent event. And I don't think he left searching for "greater purpose" more than the selfish desire for more for himself regardless of the cost. I see him as being a cold being indeed. I like the offering of aldritch's origin being in Astora and their loooong connection, being that Astora was destroyed long ago. Anri's armor describes Astora as being a land that nothing is known but its name. I believe her and horace being orphans lined up for aldritch's plate implies she wanted a home to call her own, and made astora this place in her mind. Miyazaki is known for throwing in elements that are shout-outs to his predecessors. I believe the monster that destroyed Astora is a shout-out to the Beholder from D&D. It is a unique monster that was unique to d&d, not based on any existing myth, and considered as part of the identity of that company since 1975, being one of the rare creatures kept unreleased under it's private licensing. This concludes my serial watching of all of your lore videos! Thank you for helping me get through the winter Ashen Hollow! It has been a pleasure working my brain around all of your triggering stimuli. Thanks to you Velka has become my new favorite arch-protagonist! I believe DS4 will be uniquely placed in the beginning of the Age of Dark, with a lot of reversed roles and inverse plot twists... do we bring back the flame? Are hollows (and Londor) antiquated because the curse is no more? Will humans therefor have to rise against the stagnant rule of the Hollowed Kingdom or some such thing? I sure hope so.
What if Nito is not just the First of the Dead but also the First to bring Death. If Nito's death was the Lord taking his own life then that would make him both the First to bring Death and Die. As his Lord Soul may have been all about Death it may have driven him to take his on life so that it could better assimilate with him. If the Lord Soul them selves represent disparity Light and Dark, Life and Death, they may drive there host to fulfill that aspect.
My theory is that Nito was fascinated by fire’s ability to transform things into different states, and wondered if he could transform his own soul in a similar manner. By taking his own life, he transformed his soul into a different state and created the disparity between Life and Death.
@Joske Vermeulen if they ever make a Dark Souls movie..I hope its that concept. The Age of Fire at its heights-maybe following Patches! Everyone would be hyyyyped to see Jason Statham as a laughing Patches through the ages. Hatin on clerics
Sulyvahn was a scholar right? Wouldn't it make more sense for him to learn about the power of the dark in there from the eyes? From there he can share Blood Consumption and how that results in power consumption. Edit: further revelations in replies
I think something that reinforces this is that High King Wolnir is owner of the Grave Warden Pyromancy tome. This makes it very clear in the timeline that the Grave Wardens were conquered by Carthus or at least allied themselves with Carthus to teach Wolnir about the Dark. Carthus, being a new seed bed for the Dark with the help of the Grave Wardens, would then be buried by the Undead Legion, disconnecting the Grave Wardens from having contact with Lothric. There is one link between Lothric and Carthus though. The Crystal Sage of Farron likely aided the Undead Legion in the obliteration of Carthus, and from there the Scholar could bring their findings to the Grand Archives (or at least to their sibling who will eventually reside in the Archives) where we tie back into the original idea that Sulyvahn was a Scholar of the Grand Archives.
When going over the things that lead to Nito being called "the First of the Dead," you forgot to mention that "the First of ..." is also a way to describe a a ruler or king, like how Caesar was called The First of Rome.
Sulyvahn is the one dude that I'd legit consider evil. Most things is DS arnt good or evil they just are what they are. But this dude is responsible for the fall of entire kingdoms and trying to use a Lord of Cinder as a wmd.
You know, the room and lore behind aldrich can be compared to dantes divine comedy "the inferno " and its third ring of gluttony (Aldrich being the glutton) and how he apparently turned into mud or something that floods the room. In the inferno the gluttons are punished by being stuck under this freezing cold mud and excrement left by each other whilst being battered by a cold rain (Aldrich's homing soul dart spell and rain of arrows miracle) Its hard not to see these similarities after reading and playing dantes inferno growing up and hearing the lore behind the gluttonous god eater, I think the dev's took alot of inspiration from the divine comedy and if they did, I think that's really cool
Idk man. Seems really like the profained flame mess with the pontif rather than history. I mean if he is really that old then he would look like the nameless king, what with his old ass face. Also he came from the painted world of ariendel, so he didn't exsist before ds1
Well, the Pontiff's skin is darkened and shriveled like a hollow's or the Nameless King. Also the Painted World of Ariandel is a restored painting of Ariamis, meaning they're one and the same. It also just says the Pontiff is from the Painted World, no specific painter's version.
@@TheAshenHollow you are right, but by that logic the pontif could have left out of any painted world, even the ones in between ariamis and ariendel, and why would his societies survive the burning of the worlds? But also wait a minute. Do we know if irithyll existed before the convergence? Because I just reread the profained sword item description. It says "A ceremonial sword, held in Pontiff Sulyvahn's right hand, representing the Profaned Flame. Long ago, when Sulyvahn was yet a young sorcerer, he discovered the Profaned Capital and an unfading flame below a distant tundra of Irithyll, and a burning ambition took root within him." That means by this this point in history, the pontiff knows what he wants, has the means to do it, and is only begining. And irithyll and the profained capitol exsist. My hypothesis was always that irythal was a human civilization that just grew around old anor lando fairly recently but maybe not. We also don't know if the pontif shares the same end goal with Aldrich with his deep sea idea, as he is more of a sorcerer rather than a cleric, they do share a similear goal in killing Gods though. And there is that connection with the statue and the first scolar in lothric. Anyway, it does seem that he has been pulling the strings for a long time, but it seems that alot of the relevant information about the pontif has happened really recent in dark souls time. The deep as a concept, lothric, and the profaned capitol seem relatively recent in history by ds3 when compared to even dark souls 2. But, it seems odd to me how only now he is messing with things. Thats my main concern. If he was around this long, and knew what he wanted, why did he never act on them until the literal end times. Remember Aldrich being revived happened in the intro, so the pontif only took irythil from Gwendolyn a short time ago. Finally, he has a weird connection with the deep and abyss. Those root wings remind me of the deep clerics and the pilgrim butterflies. And he has a connection to other worlds with his purple phantom clone. I'm not saying your wrong with his connection to Nito, but it does seem that in his youth he already had his shit figured out with the profained greatsword and that his connections to more recent events are more prevelant. Its also just hard to say whats relevant because we don't know his goal. Does he want the age of dark, the deep sea, or just to rule irythil, why would he go through so much effort over a long time. Why would he work with nito.
Wasn't the Evil Eye ring in the first game as well? Does that mean Aldrich was around during the first game, or that he merely came across it later on?
