I can't help but wonder, though. What is the definition of "sin" in the world of Dark Souls? Is it only a "sin" according to the laws of Gwyn? And does Velka herself feel to be a "Goddess of Sin", or rather did she represent something else that came to be called "sinful"? Was it according to Gwyn? Allfather Lloyd? The Way of White? Who is to call anything a sin in a blossoming world of chaos? I had to ask
Outside of those who created laws and organizations, sin seems to be anything opposed to the natural order. The creation of the undead, the binding of humanity to the Age of Fire, the kindling of the flame, the creation of chaos. These are some of what I think are "genuine sins".
@ilove bigbrother these are the thoughts I love to stew over. It paints the world in somber colors that weren't seen before. Someone without those eyes only see the gameplay. But with these eyes I can stare at the screen and get lost in thought
@ilove bigbrother this is the perfect reply. I felt such a way myself, just wanted to know if any others held the same question. If my badge of pride is what you call a sin, then you may call me a sinner. But the world is not black and white...
Yeah definitively Velka is the Mother of the Suble Church. But that means that the painter has been close to Velka, remember? "I haven't forgotten... Mother..."
Gael must have been someone strong relations as well, considering the painter girl calls him "Uncle Gael". This is the deep rabbit hole. He became a slave knight because of the curse of the first sin, at some point had his chains broken, and ended up taking care of the painter girl almost as a mission of force of will to break the cycle that cursed his family to their fates. The idea melds considering how old Gael is that he probably has a lot more to do with the lore than we understand. He is literally praying to Velka when the player finds him. As someone who wants to just burn away this world and have a new cold dark and gentle place to finally be at rest after everything. This explains why he guided the player through a clean up of the old remains to kill him and finish his mission in the sense of "the joy of life is to die knowing your duty is done." It's finally over, after so long.
After listening to your videos and playing through the games, my ultimate opinion is that Velka was the wife of Gwyn in ages past, mothering the children he had and then disagreeing with him when he chose to force his age to continue. As the bearer of his sin here, she chose to become the goddess of Sin as this extenended age of fire began to burn away until DS1 starts. By having pardoners that seperate those fron worldly desires she can create individuals without ego, like Patches who outlives the age of fire itself. She knew more about how to outlive the curse than many others, and her merchants sell items that purge curses. This easily juxtaposes her when placed next to Gwyn.
Odly enough there's a probable character arc of Velka despite never actually showing up in game. Earley in the age of fire - Works within the Way of White. Humans and gods working together. Humans branded with the Symbol of Fire//Dark Sign. An event called "the first sin" in DSII- Dark Moon Blades//Way of Blue, a judicial order hunting down sinners. This whole fire linking thing is clearly not working out - The Sable Church//Way of Black, let's try to lift the curse and usurp the flame. Fighting for a God who lost faith in the world to have items that scaled off intellect.

8:30 - I'd like to point out that a variation of that statue is in all three games, becoming successively 'older' as time goes on. It first shows up in the tunnel leading to the Duke's Archives. Probably she was the first master of the archives. It appears again in the Lost Bastille in the second game, much aged. In the third game we find this statue - a newer statue of a younger scholar in the same pose - with the un-beheaded version strewn around the Lothric Archives. Could very well still be Velka, I'm just pointing out that whatever else she is she's probably the goddess of librarians. Which, yknow, Vow of Silence.
Kaathe, the Shards of Manus, the Church of Londor, they very importantly aren’t trying to get the flame to fade, they’ve since the beginning been trying to usurp the flame. They just didn’t know how until close to the end. I do agree about how Friede became ashen, wondered about that
It may have been only now that the flame was at it's weakest, that it was able to be usurped. Perhaps when everyone else tried, the flame was to strong. Or someone took it upon themselves to champion the flame and reignite it. As Ludleth did, and I assume Gundyr wanted to do.
Eh, not really relevant to the video, though. In Japanese it's something more like "Kaathe, your dying wish was not fulfilled," which wouldn't change anything about what Jake says here.
Velka, the defender of hollows, that is, humans in the Age of Fire. Beautiful video. I'd like to bring up the importance of function of spells regarding evidence as well. The Vow of Silence prevents the use of spells, and mentions this in the context of the skilled swordsmanship of velka's followers. Spells are magic largely developed in the Age of Fire. What better secret skill to develop for a supporter of the Age of Dark than that which nullifies the strongest quality of the Age of Fire. Let us look a couple key items invented by Allfather Lloyd and his way of white at an early time of the Age of Fire. Lloyd's talisman and the Duel Charm. The former prevents the use of Estus and the latter strips away any buffs a person has. The former was used especially when hunting undead and the latter was used when carrying out verdicts through duels of judgement by Lloyd's "Sword of Law". Denying the strength that defines humanity - synonymous with dark - and then judgement by blade. It seems the tables have come full circle and now the Hollowed are armed with the tools to deny the Age of Fire of the strengths that define it and bring swift judgment through skilled swordsmanship. Lastly, and again with the importance of the function of spells as evidence. The miracle Atonement was brought up as an example of what Velka stood for, forgiveness etc. When this spell is recited, it attracts the attention of foes, bringing serious danger to the exiled person who "believes it carries words of forgiveness." why would Velka, or at least the Sable Church a militarized extension of Velka, forgive someone they just cast out of the church. Exile is not a product nor does it yield forgiveness from the one who exiles. It's a way to trick those cast out into dying fast for their betrayal to the cause. This may or may not represent what Velka stood for, but certainly runs par with how the Sable Church functions in the final stages of their rise to power. "Cursed journeys too, must come to an end" this is meant to be sly, a wink-wink to the fact that the exiles will find themselves dead fast while recanting supposed words of forgiveness.
The issue with the atonement miracle is that they aren’t words of forgiveness or atonement. It just makes enemies more aggressive toward you. Not really atonement or forgiveness, more like fucked up execution.

I have been trying the Darkdrift in honor of Londor. Do you have time for a short story? My main character is Arstor IV of Carim, descendant of the somber count of Carim, master of the once lost spear of the count, which Arstor IV calls Esperanza (Hope), with a rapier on the hilt. He is the rightful owner of the Abyssal Tower, the solitary castle of his forebears. The castle of the count of Carim was built in the image of this tower. The idea behind this character is to become the right hand of Londor himself. Yes, Londor as a character. The unkindled who was reborn to make Londor whole. One that didn't know his name and thus had many names... Until he remembered, at the moment that he extinguished the flame, his original name was the title he was bestowed with. In the Age Of Darkness, Arstor the fourth looks after the promised kingdom of his friend, vigilant and mysterious, towering above from the Abyssal Tower in the dark hills.

Welcome back to Velka town where everybody's Velka! Jokes aside, there's a lot of connections. But I feel like the Sable Church of Londor is going against Velka's nature. After all, she's about atonement and Londor' atonement is a lie designed to kill the exiles. Maybe Velka had three daughters, but they were lured by that toothy serpent and fell out with Velka, going to apply their knowledge for other things, like only hollows deserving salvation.
Before listening I wonder if Velka will be mentioned. Lmfao. Oh there it is. Lol The pardoners arms must be diesel holding his arms out all day and night. Lol
Velka is such an interesting character in DS lore, and the fact that she appears in all the games is just a sign of how important she is, even though they give us such little but tantalizing info about her. Great video!
Did..... Velka kill nito? The sword that brought the first death and the first of the dead, is that why she is the goddess of sin because she committed the first sin? Is that the sin aldia is the scholar of? My head hurts now
A thread was started on reddit. You are super lore studied and could really help out with the discussion. Link here: www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/comments/godw6n/yhorms_cataclysmic_cinders/?
How dare taking so long to make a Velka video? Jk love ur velka stuff and that witch of izalith is velka theory blew my mind even though maybe is not exactly what Miyazaki thought.
LOL you have absolutely no idea how ridiculous this video is. Velka has nothing to do with Londor. She is a red herring and random diety that is worshipped by the regretful dead, who still seek grace from light. That’s it. The “mother” is obviously Priscilla, the mother of the painter. Londor exists where hollows come from, which is deep within the roots of the arch tree below Ash Lake, where the first flame was discovered.
Velka is the best character from Dark Souls. She is so fun to speculate about. Arguably, she can be linked to so many things ! Ariamis, Ariandel, Londor, the purging monument in the Ringed City, the Cathedral of the Deep, and more. It's like she has her hands in everything but without ever being mentioned by name. My personal opinion is that Velka is the furtive pigmy (furtive is similar to rogue ; old yet new ; a danger to the old gods ; the bringer of the age of dark). She is the Jesus of Dark Souls, threatening a polytheist religion about thunder-throwing grandpas, welcoming the forlorn, forgiving the sinners, and promising a better world where everyone is equal and free.
There is a way that your theories could work together. Being that velka's daughters (wether literal or figuratively) split from velka due to kathe's influence. It would explain why no one from londor brings up velka despite the obvious references and that there's even a shrine to her in the game, even the spells as velka could be forgotten about in the church which would also explain why some aspects of velkas teachings do not appear, as in missing spells and that all the remaining spells are not scaling specifically with intelligence. This theory would also tie in thematically with ariandel, as the eldest daughter could have found out about the divergence in beliefs and gone back to rediscovering velka's teachings. This would explain why yuria is fine with you killing her better than the reason she gives, for why would you want someone dead when they are actively trying to stop the spread of fire which is your goal in the first place, unless they pose a different threat, one to your faith.
I'm unsubbing. Jake, I enjoy your videos and presentation. You put a lot of work and effort in. However, you are working from a bad premise. You can not present a theory, then ignore your own theory and lore behind it, to force a new theory. Having a batshit theory is all well and good, especially if there is no evidence to prove it wrong, but to then have another one of your own videos discrediting yourself is bad theorizing and lore diving. Good luck
I absolutely CAN do that, lol. What are you even on about? There is so much to speculate on from the Dark Souls series that it's incredibly easy to develop several theories for a single character. Creating new theories isn't discrediting my old ones, because my theories aren't canon. The fun part of Dark Souls lore is theory-crafting, which is exactly what I'm doing. It just sounds like to me you entirely missed the point of Dark Souls. Feel sorry for you, buddy. =/
@@TheAshenHollow Right on man, screw that guy. The whole reason the lore is so ambiguous in Dark Souls is so the player can fill in the blanks and make the story more personal. I admire your creativity bro, and look forward to your videos, great work man keep it up! \[T]/

Off topic crazy theory :
The painting woman’s mother is the creator of the entire lore and the DS universe is inside her picture wait what???
The painting woman draws a cold dark place that someday will make a home for someone
To me it sounds like the age of ancients Without the first flame eternal but only with the dark soul cold but gentle and a home for someone (she clearly means for gael with the statement
I hope it will be to him a gentle home and she talks about gael the prior sentence )
I think the story goes like this
Her mother drew an age of ancients but became absorbed by fire and with fire it came despair the fire here is the one that father ariandel tries to suppress (so basically that is the first flame)
After the age of ancients in her picture ended by drawing the first flame she knew she screwed her picture and told her daughter all about creating such a picture that’s why the painting woman states
Those absorbed by fire must not paint a world
meaning a world with fire is not cold and gentle but brings life and despair she doesn’t want to make the same mistake as her mother
Or
Don’t worry mother i haven’t forgotten
Meaning that although she has seen the flame she remembers what her mother told her and is not absorbed by fire but needs to see it to draw a world without it
Only with the dark soul
Those who aren’t ken to fire cannot paint a world
Meaning that her mother had no clue what the fire does to her world but now her daughter knows all about it
The only way to make a good home for gael is a world without fire but only with the dark soul but if she draws the dark soul fire is again in her world so she needs the pigment of the darksoul from her mothers painting to draw a world with it’s pigments but not with itself existing
The name of the world „ash“ means that there never will be embers in her world the fire is extinguished
And in fact that would make the world of ariandel the real world and by entering it you actually leave the picture called lordran/nowadays lothric
The only thing i cannot explain is why she is immortal she clearly is locked by ariandel because she cannot die but i don’t know why her mother is not around anymore maybe because she got absorbed by fire/life
I am open to suggestion and opinions
I had no idea hawkshaw had come back!!!
11:33 way to call me out
Welcome back to Velka town where everybody's Velka!
Expand further on how exactly is Velka related to crows?
ALWAYS instant soul like
Ashen out here still recycling the flame of dark souls
Doin' my best! =D
Before listening I wonder if Velka will be mentioned. Lmfao. Oh there it is. Lol
The pardoners arms must be diesel holding his arms out all day and night. Lol
Naughty little Velklepuff
Is velka the last sinner or are they connected ?
When is the "Velka is Oedon" video coming out
T-minus 12 hours.
It's about the link of fire and specifically the risks of reintroducing yhorms power to the link and the potential disasters resulting from and also the twin princes involvement. You are super lore studied and could really help out with the discussion. Link here: www.reddit.com/r/darksouls3/comments/godw6n/yhorms_cataclysmic_cinders/?
How dare taking so long to make a Velka video?
Jk love ur velka stuff and that witch of izalith is velka theory blew my mind even though maybe is not exactly what Miyazaki thought.
people still talking bout kaathe as a manipulator when in dark souls 3 clues are everywhere that he was the only honest who told the truth owo
this guy and velka
Get a room already, right?
Time to belly flop into another lore video!
Priscilla is Velkas mother.
What if Velka is the giant crow at firelink shrine in ds1
It's certainly a possibility! =]
This is what i subscribe for, long live VELKA
Why can't I skip the ads? I watched the video but was so painful. anyone else experiencing this?
I love this series and lore and community
Velka with her childbearing hips?
LOL you have absolutely no idea how ridiculous this video is. Velka has nothing to do with Londor. She is a red herring and random diety that is worshipped by the regretful dead, who still seek grace from light. That’s it. The “mother” is obviously Priscilla, the mother of the painter.
Londor exists where hollows come from, which is deep within the roots of the arch tree below Ash Lake, where the first flame was discovered.
What if Velka... is us?
#VelkaDidItAll
Mmmm yesss!!!! MORE LORE FOR THE SUN
I am Velka
