  • All of you in SoCal probably had a similar day maybe/hopefully a tad better. But it was high tide, small, and cold. I still had fun, hope you did too.

      He's getting better. Back in the water but he can't write or draw anymore, he lost a lot of his fine motor skills. We think it will slowly come back after a year. He also still has pain but at least he is back in the water. 🤙🤙🤙🤙

      let me know if you any pointers. I used to turn it on , turn on tracking, and paddle out. but now, I calibrate it with the tag mounted and when done, I throw the tag towards the beach to see if the camera if following it. Then, while the cam isn't doing it's spinny thing, I attach a battery back which makes it last so much longer. After I attach it, I walk down to the beach where I threw my tag and put it on.
      Funny story though, once I threw the tag way down the beach without the strap. as I attached my battery, I look up and I see a freaken seagull pick it up and start flying away with it. I about pooped my wetsuit. I got up and thank God the dumb bird dropped it. I think me getting up freaked him out and because the tag is smooth, he didn't have a good grip on it. So make sure that strap is on otherwise it is small and a dang bird might think it is food. haha

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому

      based on conversations with Geoff and another buddy who already went, I think I am going to take 3 boards, two of which will be backup only. From what I understand, there isn't much time to switch boards.
      Primary
      5'6" CI Neckbeard 2 w/ Fanning Large fins
      Backups
      5'3" Firewire Glazer with the Machado Pivot fins
      5'4" Firewire Dominator with the EN Blacksticks
      Just in case
      6'8" Firewire Beyond just to have in the car
      I will try and post what I can. I know that the WSL have rules.

    Noticed a Softech Mason Ho at 3:23 ! How do you or they like it? I have one and have mixed felling about it. Maybe I/you should do a review on it?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому

      I have 3 waves on that board at 2:10. All I can say is Mason must be a surf genius. Because I cannot surf that thing. It paddles well, catches waves good too but it doesn't go rail to rail. setting one rail seems ok but going back and forth didn't' work for me also I couldn't bottom turn it well. I think I did better on the catch surf beater with no fins.

  • @marycain7763
    @marycain7763 3 роки тому

    Great videos, Thomye! I'm curious.....have you tried any other fin setups in the twice baked?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому

      I tried the Machado Pivot thrusters but it didn't go well for me. The waves were bigger and fast and so the board felt really tight and I could feel the humming of the water as I was doing turns. Too much drag I guess.
      This is rather odd because on my old 5'1 baked potato, I liked it better as a thruster. Granted it was shorter. Having said that, I felt the drag on the Baked as well, but it was a good trade off for the get up and go speed I had. It was instant.
      Anyways, I'll try and do a fin video on a small clean day where I do 3 waves to 3 waves. I just need the surf and weather to cooperate. :)

    I'm thinking about getting a 5'5 Twice Baked Potato, I'm 165lbs and 5'10. The board looks awesome, do you think 5'5 would be too big for me?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому

      it depends on what you are trying to get out of it. so for me, that board is my uber groveler. at my weight of 140 and the board being 31.6, the factor/ratio is .2257. So for your weight, that would be give or take 37L. You are also a few inches taller so as far as the height of the board, it would be the same relative to my height. So in a nutshell, I think the 5'5 isn't too big if you are looking for an "uber" groveler. in fact, I like your ratio better. I actually wanted my Twice Baked to be 30L vs 31.6L but they didn't make one. :(

    • @bloblablah7409
      @bloblablah7409 Рік тому +1

      @@ThomyeSurfs Thank you for that thoughtful & informative response! I definitely want this board to be my uber groveler. The 2x baked seems like the ultimate groveler. I'm coming down from a 5'11 Helium Baked Potato which is just wayyy too big - it felt like a boat. I know helium construction boards are meant to be ridden a lot shorter than usual so I guess that's why I was worried about 5'5 being a bit too big.

    • @bloblablah7409
      @bloblablah7409 Рік тому +1

      @@ThomyeSurfs I pulled the trigger on the 5’5 TB five days ago and it is my all time favorite board. It was $700 w/ machado quad fins and had only been ridden twice - I’ve been surfing every day since I got it. It’s so skatey it feels like i’m riding my surfskate when i’m up and riding the wave. It has the perfect level of reactiveness. I’ve owned a 5’6 Helium Tomo Evo and it was just too reactive that it felt difficult to ride and there was no gracefulness to my surfing. The TB is reactive enough that you can still easily do turns, but still feels cruisy for those like myself who like that laidback/lazy style. Thank you for helping me out! These boards can get tricky when it comes to sizing and I think the 5’5 gives me exactly what I want out of groveler.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  Рік тому

      @@bloblablah7409 you are 2" taller and 15lbs heavier. it's perfect math for the height of the board. 5'5 will still feel loose and playful but have the float you need. Not as much as your 5'11 baked but certain it's enough. let me know how it goes.

      I'm 5'8 and 145. As for the Modern 2, it went well. I have yet to do a formal review of it. Right off the bad or first impressions, I liked it a lot. I have a few videos on it if you search for them. The length, 5'6, made the boar feel like more of a normal board to me and if you watch the footage, my off the lips looked better. not turns weren't as drivey as my Seaside though.

    • @michaelono7335
      @michaelono7335 3 роки тому

      Thanks!! Yep, saw your videos on the modern2. I'm 5'7 172lbs and ride 29L. Did the 5'6 feel a little big?

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому +1

      @@michaelono7335 no, not at all. I saw that video that Noel Salas did and the 5'4 just looked weird on Noel and then he mentioned that he ran into Felipe who was on the 5'6. the 5'6 looked way better on Felipe who is smaller than Noel so I thought it was a better idea to go with the 5'6 instead. I think it has to do with the rail line and the wide point forward from center.
      I will do that review next.
