  • On days that are too small to review a board, I thought I'd just post of video of of me surfing the Twice Baked.
Still working on my Neckbeard 2 review which would have been done if my Soloshot didn't fail me yesterday.
Anyways, if you know of any other super grovelers, let me know. I'm talking 5'1 to 5'3 at or above 30 L for a 5'1 and 32 to 33L for a 5'3. I want to see if other boards ride as well.

Absolutely agree, they are super grovelers and love mine. Got the 5'7" at 38l, being 5'9" & 75kg (165lb?) I normally ride around the 32 - 33l mark and after almost 50 years of surfing still firmly believe, life is to short to ride a long board :)

I have a Joistik Surfboards board called the Cab Sav. It's 5'4 and 34L. It's shaped by a Nick Blair on the Northern Beaches of Sydney, Australia. Similar to the twice baked. I have an epoxy version. Ride it as a quad. EA Blackstix for the front fins and HS quad rears. All in futures. I get so many waves. I also ride it in bigger fat slow surf. Best board I ever purchased. So much fun. Prefer my backhand on it.

the puddle number jumper looks good too, I have always been curious about that board but I put that board in the groveler category vs super groveler. I think it is closer to my seaside in terms of height to volume ratio. But still a fun looking board. Almost looks like the average jo.

Awesome footage and looking forward to the NB2 review!
One board that I've seen one guy used a pretty small day was a 'Bento Box' from Solid Surf, and it's been on my list to grab if I ever see one for sale used. nice and looks like a great option for the summer time (I was thinking on the seaside) . Just one question, how many Litters did you add to this board, compared to your usual daily board ? Just afraid to have to many litters

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  3 роки тому +5

this is a tough question mostly because we have to agree on the daily driver. My daily driver is the seaside 5'3 which is 28.2L. Having said that, if I were to get a performance board, say 5'8, it would probably be closer to 25L. Anyways, I'm 5'8 and 145 lbs and the reason I ride the Seaside in 5'3 vs 5'2 is I need it longer. I have the 5'2 but it looks too short on me when surfing. If the 5'3 were to be 2 Liters less, I would probably surf it more critically but the 5'3 as is surfs pretty good at my break.
I could probably have gone with the 5'1 Twice Baked which is 28.3L but that would literally be the same volume as my Seaside. It would surf almost the same except I lose performance as the waves get bigger. So, in order to keep it a "Super Groveler" vs just groveler like my Seaside, I decided to go with the 5'3 which is 31.6L. Not only is it more liters but it is also a tad wider. Width doesn't get the attention as it deserves. Think about a skin boarder, almost no volume get once he has speed, thing glides also, to make it glide better, what do skin boarders to? they turn the board to have move width. Having said, this next part is important.
If you are trying to choose between the two, Seaside and Twice Baked, and you want a board that surfs with as much performance as possible, then go with the same volume. Either would work but as the waves get bigger, the drop off for performance is pretty quick with the Twice Baked. If you buy the TB with more volume, you lose performance right off the start but you end up paddling better. But don't go too much bigger, I would go wit the same height. If you are looking at the 5'5 Seaside, then the 5'5 TB is fine. the extra volume and WIDTH will make it a super groveler.
      Hope that made sense.

That same day I used a friends Von Sol - Manta at Trestles/Barbs. It was similar conditions. I couldn’t believe how amazing it was!! The Manta feels kind of like you’re just floating. You can’t really “put it on rail” yet it is unbelievably loose and turns on a dime even on a wave with no push. I was telling another surf buddy about it and how I wanted to get something like the Manta for when it get’s that small. He suggested a Lost Puddle Jumper HP and gave me his to try out. It’s been amazing. You can totally put it on rail and is super responsive and loose....thing is I’ve only surfed it in 3-5’ waves. I really want to get it in some junk waves and see how it does. If you could get your hands on either, I’d dig hearing your perspective.

At the time I didn't even really consider volume, so I got it waaayyy oversized (I'm 6'1 and 75kg) at 5'10. I think that would be close to 40L or something around that haha! Love my twice baked, feels like it is cheating! Do you get your super grovelers with any extra liters of volume compared to what you normally ride in something the seaside? I got mine 3-4L more volume and if I had to do it again I'd go more like 1-2L extra. Other funny thing for me about the twice baked is that it feels almost like a longboard and I have to remember to surf it off back foot like a shortboard.

    • @ThomyeSurfs

so I normally would ride a 5'3 Seaside which I think is 28.2 Liters (off the top of my head). If I got the 5'1 Twice or Baked, it would be about a liter more. But it would also surf very similar since they are about the same width. So, I opted for the 5''3 Twice which I think is 31.9L That is almost 4 L more. And although I lose some performance, it am still able to throw it around so I think I made the right choice. In the original review, I did say that if I had the money, I would buy the 5'1 as well. The board could be considered a pre run because it's from before he started Solid surfboards. It's a higher volume in the chest fish with a half moon tail. The board is 6' x 21 1/2" x 2 3/4" at 40.1 L and I'm 6' at 195 lbs. I use a set of FCS II power twins for it with no trailer fin. It's a super groveler for sure and it was my first shortboard. hi, great surfing! I ride Stacey Bullfrog 5'4 at 33L in EPS. it is a great board but sadly it is discontinued. i used to ride chumlee 5'7 and baked potato 5'3 in LFT in the past. I am thinking TB 5'3 or Aloha surfboard Black Panda Timbertek 5'4 at 31L plus. do you have any thoughts or recommendation? black panda has weird channel and i wonder how it will go rail to rail in small waves.

    • @ThomyeSurfs
      @ThomyeSurfs  2 роки тому

I am not too familiar with the Black Panda by Aloha. but looking at the specs of that board, I would think it will perform better and not grovel as well. just comparing it on volume, the Firewire TB at 5'3 is 31L but 21.25" wide. The Aloha BP to have roughly the same volume is 1" longer but narrower. so, that extra length to the railine and slightly narrower board, will make it a better performer in my opinion. so depending on what you are looking for, either boards can be good. just looking at the Black Panda, it looks awesome and I don't think the channel bottom is a bad thing. the Twice Baked has a massive contoured bottom as well so it's sort of like having channel without the bite.
I would love to try the black panda if I ever came across it. Having said that, I will tell you why I chose the firewire:
      1) durability (my thought is that this board will likely last me at least 10 years without any pressures, dings are under my control).
      2) 31 Liters and wide. For days like what's in the video that the extra 1" width helps a lot.
      3) resell value is really good if I decided to get rid of it.
      4) I had prior experience with the baked potato so it made sense to shift to the twice baked

they are both grovelers so both would work but you just end up working a tad harder on the seaside. My thought lately is not to work as much and just get more waves if possible. With that said, me personally, if you told me to choose, I would much rather have the seaside even though the Twice baked works better in smaller waves. This is because, the Seaside would cover me for a broader range of waves. I can surf pretty small waves with some effort on the seaside and surf better waves too. Twice Baked, you are sort of locked into small waves. Once it gets bigger and better, the board will get tougher to control.

since we are talking small waves, I would say the Twice Baked Potato is a better option than the Seaside and Beyond. As an example, the 5'9 TB has 42L while the 6'8 S&B has 40L. I don't exactly know which volume range you are in but as you can see from this generic comparison that the 5'9 TB has 2 more liters but it will fit in a small wave much better. Without knowing much more, it is hard to say. I would need to know your Astro Pop size. that way you can get a board that doesn't overlap too much with that board, yet have one that is still nimble and fun. I would say get the TB. the seaside is much better on bigger waves. It can grovel but grovels in a much straighter line.

I overgrowth the Astro pop ( it was my 1st short board)
Astropop is significantly oversized... it is 35 ltrs and my weight is 68kg.
When the wave has a bit of push (let’s say 8sec +) there is no problem to grovel even provided that it is relatively small wave, when it is weaker /sloppier it is quite hard to takeoff & generate speed.

@@davydtolyarenok3704 OK, so the 35L AP then is 6'0 tall. In all honesty, that is a groveler for sure. however, at the size, the height makes it harder to control. If you were to get a firewire twice baked, you could go with a 5'7 which would give you 3.6 more liters than the AP. it is also almost 2" wider which makes it a SUPER groveler vs a groveler. the width give you way more planing and the volume give you way more float. the shortness gives you way more control. It would be intended for those days that is just small, shin high.
Warming, the 22 1/8" width does make it a tad harder to paddle in terms of comfort. your arms are lateral so you get tired faster. but, you do move faster when paddling. if that makes sense. There are a few other super grovelers that people have mentioned but I have never surfed them so I can't really speak to them. The good thing about the Twice Baked in timbertech is that it is a board that "could" last a very long time. provided you don't ding it. it is harder to ding. plus it looks more like a wall hanger board which is also cool.

@@ThomyeSurfs Wow, thanks for the analysis, I do really appreciate the experience shared!
Honestly, I was thinking to actually drop the litres to 31ish to maintain capability to wiggle around (pump/hop etc) and to generate my own speed.
Another thought is to use the fomie like Pyzel Gremlin or Mick Fanning softboards.
Does any of options sound reasonable?
      Thank you for your support
      Cheers

Don't know why you're using a leash in such small surf. So much more fun and glide without one.

I agree. I like surfing without a leash but Bolsa has so many stingrays that the thought of losing my board gives me nightmares.
