  • My afterthoughts on the drone confrontation I had. Also...Creeping up to 1K subs! I really appreciate the support! I wanted to vlog at a job but couldn't because of an NDA they made me sign so instead I rant on for a few minutes after the job, giving thanks, reflecting on that cop video and missing my Jeep.

Comin from a white dude, the only people that are gonna get offended by you "bringing up the race card" as low key and casually as you did, are gonna be people that have racist tendencies or are just incredibly ignorant and closed minded (can't see things from your perspective so are immediately on the defensive/refuse to acknowledge the problem of racism in our society still ongoing).
I always tell folks like that "If the shoe doesn't fit, don't try to stuff your foot in it Cinderella". If they're not racists that would profile you the same way, then they can just mind their business, or support you. Attacking you for mentioning the concern/potential motivation, only serves the potential attacker.
But yes, their dialogue is still very valuable, even if nothing more than to serve as an example of how not to be lol (video engagement and algorithms aside!)

Not every white dude is like you, and you don't know the thoughts/feelings/motivations of anyone. Being white doesn't give you this gift. In this situation, I do think race may have been a factor, but you have to be careful saying that it was. Chad may have been a little racist. Someone that ignorant probably is, but its not a door we need to open right away. The issue is when someone of color is actually being ignorant, and when faced with some kind of criticism of their behavior, they immediately claim it is because of their color. In this situation nobody wins, because now everyone is defensive about a topic that is most likely not the issue...it is simply people being jerks.
So instead of making everything about racial awareness, we simply need to hold people accountable for being jerks regardless of their personal feelings/motivations.

The argument ignores that it's quite common for minorities to blame every negative interaction on racism, as it's a very easy way of shifting blame.
In this case especially, it isn't hard to find stories about people calling the cops, getting angry, getting violent, etc. because someone was flying a drone regardless of race. It's akin to you being a bit loud and obnoxious in a restaurant, people that are sensitive to that requesting you to lower your volume and when you don't quit ask the staff to do something about it and they then telling to people complaining the volume isn't excessive.
Pulling the race card, even the mere suggestion, shows some lack of self awareness or a lack of how people flying drones are viewed by the wider public. (and the latter I find highly unlikely seeing as he does it professionally)
In a perfect world everyone is colorblind, not hyper aware of the other's race. And in this case it rather shows more of the latter than the former, which is what people seem to take issue with. Blaming things on race, or suggest it could, when there are far more obvious reasons only makes solving racism harder, not easier. And on top of that it erodes trust when claims of racism are valid, boy who cried wolf and all that. Some people are just assholes, you don't need to be a racist to be an asshole and some people just look for issues everywhere where their are non.
BTW a "fun" example I have from my own life is when I worked as a loan book collector for high schools. I was part of the group needing to check if all books where there and if there was no major damage (read clear water damage, missing pages, glued pages, drawings, etc.). When I worked in largely white highschools the vast majority of reactions where "I knew it", "ohh shit" or some excuse that they loaned it to a friend, forgot it or something like that (standard stuff). In high schools which had large minority groups population every half hour or so you'd get someone claiming I (or anyone else not sharing their race) was racist for not giving them the all clear for clear issues with their books or some of their books missing. A fun one was me being a guy bringing books back and forth between students and graders (due to limited space in the school) and me being accused or racism for telling the guy he had a fine, something I had no control over (which ironically was graded by a guy that was arab, like the guy complaining). Or in rare occasions they started complaining to school management of "racism" and claiming collector purposefully toke a book away to give them or a fine, or destroy the book to give them a fine (luckily it was quite common for other students to call them out on that bullshit or was a known problem student, but I've seen people being fired for it as the school had a "zero tolerance" rule on racism, which in practice meant you could really hurt people by making false accusations). A particularly funny one was a student claiming I gave his book heavy water damage because "he's racist", mind you the book was dry. Somehow the student thought that someone actively drenching a book and drying it out in the span of 5 minutes was a realistic accusation.
My point is not every negative interaction is racism, and racism is a very easy scapegoat to avoid dealing with either your own problems or issues people have with you.

Very true. I was a Navy brat and grew up in Japan. People don't realize how racist many Japanese people are. I am half Korean and growing up there in the mid to late 70's my mom and I weren't allowed or not very welcomed in some of the establishments in Yokohama, Japan and a few in Yokosuka, Japan. At the time I was very young and I remember being confused thinking we or my mom had done something wrong unknowingly. Even the Japanese side of my mom's family is ashamed that we my some of the family is Korean.
Today...It doesn't really bother me because I do my best to just respect and let others live their lives so long as it doesn't affect me or my family in a negative way.

I was a British paratrooper and served along with other race troopers and can empathise with the comment about respect for being in uniform. I respect you for your service to your country and would have been proud to serve with you especially as you showed a calm front even against what you felt inside. Military training comes in handy for the rest of your life and many times shows the strength of the individual. Your video reminds others that no matter what you do in this life there will always be those that oppose you but that is something they should deal with and is not our responsibility. Keep the videos coming and thanks for sharing.

Originally, the 'incident' video brought me to your channel. Your explanation of events is commendable. Subscribed not because of that incident but due to your natural gift for being excellent under pressure.
High visiblity vest is good and ID card on necklace. Might consider a hard hat any color with your company logo on front helm.
Edit to add, I am a civilian flotation dock technician with a Marina Engineering company raising sunken docks, fluxcore weld repair hinges/brackets/gussets/pressurizing 2'x20' (or larger) steel flotation pipes. Also repair and fabricate steel/aluminum boat/ship hulls and the like. When I am on the job and wearing high visibility vest with company logo and proper PPE I receive looks of admiration. Without the uniform and known functions, just a person in the back ground. I hear you on the profiling part, being aboriginal/european I have taken flack from both sides and called names.
Using Arial drone in our line of work is not required although could be a asset having visual record of various docking systems we service and makes a nice presentation platform lol.
    Be the peace.

I worked as a tv news cameraman for one of the broadcast networks for decades... and discovered the amazing power of wearing the orange highway safety vest on outdoor camera shoots. We get harassed by everyone on the planet, and it was always an experience that will raise your blood pressure.. Nobody will bother you if you have a safety vest on, because its a professional uniform for people who are at work. It'is subconsciously respected as a legit icon of safety and lawfulness. Thanks for reminding me. I just started flying drones and am getting the PArt 107 cert. I'm packing the vest wherever I go. Loved your cool deamor, nicely done. That was a totally harrassing situation from that man. I loved that the cops blew him off instantly. Best of luck! Thx!

Hey there, I am also a Part 107/Part 61 Pilot (and an Academy Award winning filmmaker and recently had the same situation happen while shooting a yacht departing Sausalito for San Francisco Bay. He was quite a bit more agro then your guy but I wasn’t at all rattled (and that made him even more angry). I explained to the guy that I wasn’t flying over his houseboat and frankly, he just wasn’t that interesting to even bother filming even if I wanted to. When the cops arrived they where very cool and polite and told the guy to not bother me. After they left and after I got the shot the guy threatened to “shoot my drone out of the sky” so I reported him at the station in case he harasses me in the future.
During another previous incident, when I explained what I was doing to an agro citizen, I showed them some footage and gave them a really cool FPV flight, they ended up buying a Mavic and became one of my students. It’s all about education. You handled the situation really well. Happy flying!

Thanks for watching and for sharing your experiences. I agree, it's all about education. I just feel like some people don't care to be educated because of what they think they know or whatever, but that's pretty cool that you were able to convert that person into a Mavic owner/pilot! Have definitely learned a lot about the cinematic aspects rather than the flying but still have so much to learn. Thanks again and happy flying to you as well!

Sonicc, haven't you heard of all the stories of perverts flying drones over peoples houses to get film of wives and girls outside tanning in hopes of catching them nude. Yes there are pervs out there that do that stuff and that gives flying drones a bad rap.

Good job keeping your composure and professionalism, and I'm glad the officer so quickly backed you up and stayed to make the guy leave you alone. I think the vest is a really good idea, and so is the smile comment but the guy hardly gave you time to. Thank you for your service! Oorah!

the high vis vest is such an easy way to not get asked questions or be bothered, theres a video of 2 dudes in high vis vests just walking into the back of stores and stuff like that and no one bats an eye, hard-hat and clipboard is a great idea too, keep up the good work brother :)

Great job, brother. You handled it very well. It's something I talk a lot about on my show...acting like a professional and looking like one. The hi-viz vest and ID go a long way in that regard. Anything you can do to reduce the chances of being confronted unnecessarily is a worthwhile endeavor. I don't know if you have it already, but some magnetic signage you can slap on your Jeep letting people know from a distance that you're there for a good reason will help as well.

Your a good example that helps people to understand that only you have control yourself. Never give another person the ability to control you. A real mature man is secure with his self worth and does not need others to slap him on the back. But I give credit to your inner secure man. We need more men like you.
Good modeling of truth and honesty.

I enjoyed the first video, as many have said you just got on with what you were doing, got the job done. I like the vest and ID card ideas. Shows a professional level to your work. Could even go as far as getting a H landing pad and cones for people to stay away from? You kept it cool and professional, way to go.

I just watched both the jerk that accosted you and this vid... I really have a lot, a lot of respect for how you handled the situation. I appreciate your willingness to share this moment with us. I am currently working on my Part 107 and should be up and running early next year... in the meantime, lots of practice and studying. Thanks again!

Sir...you're confrontation video was my first with you, and this one is the second. I'm subscribed. And given the shirt you're wearing, I'm not at all surprised you conducted yourself with respect, with calm. Someone else's fear is not your challenge. And you knew you were in the right, and that's the card you played. Race card? Didn't see it. People who look different than us sometimes find fear first. You've done your family - and your unit - proud. Looking forward to your other videos!

You inspire me to persue a Part 107 license, thank you!
I have a UAS registration and have been flying cheapo drones for a few years and just recenly purchased a Parrot Bebop 2 drone and I really enjoy flying it around my neighborhood. One of my neighbors aproached me and asked if I could film his home for sale and now I'm thinking after watching your channel I should go for it and get my license.

I am studying to get my 107 license. Another good tip I read was in addition to your high visibility vest also put a few orange cones around you. People seem to think that is a barrier and will usually stay back. Good stuff you put on here. New sub.....thanks for sharing

I just came upon your channel and would like to first say Semper Fi brother and you just another another sub. I did see your vid where you encountered the idiot that called the cops on you. Man my blood was boiling when he was giving that description to the cops also and it wasn’t me. I don’t know how you held it together but glad you did cause I would have jumped in his face DI style. As someone who is also prepping for the part 107 test I’m glad I saw this vid because you are right you have to keep your cool when you encounter these people. Can’t wait to watch the rest of your videos bro.
