@@tcj226 Yeah. I agree if it's only for this app. Seems to be more geared toward users who are already in adobe ecosystem, or drive people to the full suite subscription. I think it should just be free with photoshop plan or like maybe $5 stand alone or something.
Also. I've been using without the sub and so far haven't needed to use the pro features. You don't NEED sub to use it or export flat images. Pro literally just unlocks more export options at this point.
Feel like pricetag is scaring off way too many people from even trying it even thought 99% of it is free. But thats on Adobe for not making that clear in their marketing.

Just like Brad I paid about $6 years ago for Procreate. Since then, it has expanded so much that if I were a generous person, I’d now send them the difference between what I paid and how much they’re now charging. They’re engaging their users and seem to be in it to create a great app. Instead of an app where the no1 priority is to make money.

I love Procreate, but will watch this video even though I immediately dismissed it after hearing $10/mo. Now it makes me want to donate to Procreate for how awesome and cheap it is (as someone who never paid for apps, $10 sounded like a lot at first but it's SO GOOD). Truthfully, I'm not even sure why Adobe felt it needed to make this app because I don't hear anyone clamoring for a different one over Procreate... and I still have yet to see any advantages Fresco has.

Why don’t Procreate open a Procreate Brushes Assets Store, including their own ‘additional/extra’ brushes, plus allowing other Procreate brush makers to list there, and Procreate takes a small cut of those sales? That way, The Procreate developers can make more, and have more funds to contribute to the app’s ongoing development? And people like us who feel like contributing to Procreate can do so by purchasing on the store? Hey, I’m going to put that as a suggestion on their site!

I dislike everything Adobe does now. Based on the very principle of not selling software but licenses. That is NOT OK. It doesn't matter how good it is. I want no part of it. It's bad business.

    • @andarted
      @andarted 5 років тому +14

Yeah, renting licenses for software is just like if a company could copy-pasting apartments endlessly for free, but only rent them out for expensive money. Here, money is not earned through the performance of the product, but through the active scarcity of an infinite resource. It may sound harsh, but in the end, it's a new level of evilness in the cruel reality of unethical business practices. The only way for an individual to do something about it is to renounce the offer.
But that's not difficult when there are such good competitors. I mean, whether someone does awesome projects depends so much more on his abilities than on any small features. If you want to improve your own work, it's much more efficient to work on your own skills, styles and projects than throwing money at Adobe and using some feauture that thousands of other people know better than you anyway.

Well, partially :) I use Affinity stuff as well as Procreate and Adobe apps. Procreate is clearly taken the scene, but Affinity have still a long way to go. Especially if you use it in more automatised way through macros(which are still pretty underdeveloped) and API (which so far Affinity didn't release yet). As much as I love Affinity software, I have to admit that for more advanced usage (macros/api/some cases of performance optimisation/lack of smart objects equivalent) Adobe still comes up on top. Believe me, I love Affinity products, I bought like 6 copies of their products for my company and I know some of my clients bought few copies after me spreading the word. I hope all best for them and I can't wait for Affinity Studio to be released, that should solve a lot of problems (i.e. smart objects which would be linked objects in their case) :)

True that I'm mostly focused in oils/acrylics, but often need to do watercolor stuff, too.
Still, I find it really good, but a stretch for a hyper realistic painter used to acrylics, oils and drier, western like watercolors... :) Will be very sure to check the trial, though. I don't leave a single app of this kind untested, lol.

It also the site tries to sell too much the idea that Chinese brush painting is superior to western painting style... IMO, not the best way to sell to westerners, lol. But I guess is great for their own market. I need a tad more control over the paint... Still, in some screenshots it seems you can tune it for more dry and controlled strokes... Yes, "water paints by its own", and all that stuff we know since always, but it is just one style more, not the one-and-all where art must only go. One needs a tool to be able to paint in many different styles, in my opinion. Among other things, because in real life an illustrator needs to work for very different projects and clients.
Very positive points are that it says it can use 12k x12k canvases, and Rebelle already struggles with those quite... also that it can work even with just a gt 730 (a 30 -40 bucks video card!)...I have just a crappy 1050 2GB, but is quite better than that, so, will check it. Also good the great variability and realism of the effect over textured paper and variability in every stroke, very natural. My test will be if I can use it for a "western style of painting". Otherwise is of no use to me (or another painters like me).

that's certain. But some of us are already pros in the entire Adobe Suite, and at home prefer Affinity (in Windows, in my case). Mastering the Adobe suite is the only sensible thing to do if pursuiting a career in the industry. But then again, it would not make sense to focus on the ipad for that! The pro field require you to work in Mac and Windows environments. So, in the iPad it has no sense that they'd compete like they do in the desktop. Industry pros, specially those in a large staff, are not gonna be using the iPad other than to bring stuff from home, or the like. And most iPad users being hobbyists or lone wolves aka freelancers that can work alone, and not doing work for a ton of clients that require full fledged PSD files with latest CC layers features. With PS, AI and ID. When not even After Effects. So, that they apply same concept for the ipad, same price even than PS photography plan, makes zero sense. The ipad users are by large hobbyists, or indy illustrator/comic artists, when not just students. Not someone handling Zbrush, Surface Painter, having all time the game engine loaded, and maybe Maya or 3DS Max as well, for fast hot linking. It's not to the iPad users to which you can put the pressure they can put over desktop pros. The ransom system wont work in the ipad, wehre these type of users have already Procreate, Art Studio, and the Affinity suite.

But forget about delivering layers with FX, or what's worse, receiving a layered with FX PSD file. And that means, in my experience, and while I pick the clients and gigs (so, I already leave out a TON of potential clients), 50% of gigs are out of the current market (meaning small and medium business, or large companies) scope for someone not having the Adobe cloud and a desktop PC/Mac. And even those which can deal with it (like I do), it has meant cumbersome tricks (not possible with only the iPad, btw, but that's me and my consideration that a _full pro_ needs mainly the PC/Mac, and then can have the iPad as a companion tool, no matter how excellent it is)
Besides that, a PNG is a RGB-only file... Even 3 recent big projects would have reverted into disaster if I could only depend on that, and not in FULL CMYK export, as a PDF/x-4 and PDF/X-1a, embedding actually the very specific CMYK color profile used by each print company.
For my own leisure, or even, as much, participating in contests, etc... yeah, usually no need for anything than a PNG, neither the need of a PC or Mac, for just those uses.
But I know what you mean: Certain users do not need these things at all (mostly hobbyists, or people learning the ropes yet, or people lucky to have only some very limited and specific output/file preparation needs, maybe for a single and particular client....)

I do feel like this would be a great app for those who's already sticking with Adobe Creative Cloud, but I don't see much reasons to get this as a standalone thing over a 10$ Procreate which seems to have much more polished features. There's no bitmap blender brushes by default (not at all on free version), no channel curves, no Hue/Saturation/Brightness. Transformations are just scaling and rotation; no deformation/skewing/perspective/warp. No liquify. Yo can't create brushes inside Fresco, you can't even modify the grain or brush tip.
However, has some good features. The watercolor is very nice, and reacts even to any bitmap; it only lacks a water visualization (as Rebelle). The UI is very good. Is responsive. Memory management seems good (there's no limitations on layers). It's a very nice app if you already hace an Adobe CC subscription (only Complete or Photoshop, Fresco isn't included on Photography plan).
It's a shame it has too many limitations on free versiones. They must have dropped a 'one time payment' option. Today, one month payment it's expensive as all Procreate.

Procreate's drastically shifted consumer expectations with their one-time inexpensive price. It's no longer necessary to plunk down hundreds of dollars just to produce digital work. Adobe Suite's still cornered the professional market, but smaller apps have released the stronghold they had on independent artists.
My husband and I are pretty much tethered to Adobe CC for the time being (Adobe is practically industry standard at most studios and no free/cheap animation program meets our needs), so I may try Fresco out since it's free for us anyway. The watercolor brush behavior looks absolutely sublime. But man, $120 annually is a lot to ask for a mobile app.
To chime in with the others singing Procreate's praises, I really haven't used PS for personal art or individual commission work lately. I might transfer work done in another app just to export in a specific format or use a few PS-specific features, but that's about it. Procreate and Clip Studio Paint got PS beat as an illustration tool and overall user friendly experience. The gateway to digital illustration and animation has greatly expanded and Adobe needs to loosen up.

Thanks for making this video, Brad. Our team worked a long, long time on getting Fresco out the door, and we are proud of this work, but we are already right back on the job working on the next release. Fresco is an ever-evolving work in progress with many features and tools on the way, as well as many improvements. It’s worth mentioning that there is a free version of the app that anybody can use, and this free version has plenty to work with. In the top right corner of the home screen, there is an option to see what new features are coming, as well as a place to suggest features. We are reading those daily and compiling - please tell us what you want! Quick comment about using pure water or using the oils without any pigment: you can tap on the transparent circle at bottom right of your color wheel to instantly access this state with the live brushes. With watercolors, this allows you to paint with pure water (I recommend setting wetness to roughly 40% and flow to about the same for best effects). With the oils, you can use this same transparent pixel to actually blend any colors that are already on the canvas! Also, drawing a straight line with ‘zip-line’ is possible by using the ‘experimental’ preference in the app settings (top right corner, gear-shaped icon). Thanks again.

Just tried it. Exporting is a bit of a pain but not unmanageable compared to Draw. I use vectors exclusively. Fresco (as far as I can tell) only lets you export as a PDF (which flattens all layers from fresco to the PDF, but retains their vector shapes), or as a PSD (which maintains layers but converts the vector data into raster data). Pretty awful so far in my experience.

The price is not an issue as I have a creative cloud account for my design apps. So Fresco is a nice addition (even though technically I am still paying for it). I have only played with the app for a couple days. The live brushes are definitely cool. The oil brushes seem to mix better than what I get in procreate, but maybe I just have not found the right settings in procreate yet. The watercolor is cool, but I have not used it enough to know if it can really be controlled well. My biggest issue is that i am so used to procreate now, that i find the layer masking to select painted content in Fresco to be a bit annoying.
One thing i noticed is when I grouped layers together, I could not work on the layers in the group. It seemed to only function as a way to move content around across multiple layers... So you would have to ungroup the layers every time you want to edit or add. Also you cannot name layers as far as I can tell, which is a problem if you are painting in white on the layer, as the layer preview thumbnail just looks blank... so if you have multiple layers with white only on them... you will not know what is on each layer unless you click them on and off.
It definitely will not replace procreate which is a much more powerful, robust program. Now if procreate can implement a watercolor brush that was as good as Rebelle 3, then Adobe will just have to shelve this program. I wonder if adobe will ever decide to release Photoshop for the Ipad, and if it will have access to the live brushes natively... My issue with most adobe apps including fresco is they just seem to lack too many features. I am hoping Photoshop for ipad will live up to the promise.

So, I'm lucky/privileged that my school this year gave all its students Adobe CC for free so that I was able to try it w/o a trial or the subscription. I've found that I'm unable to establish a similar or better smooth workflow in Fresco like I am with procreate. For starters, I tend to import & export my files back & forth between a variety of programs so that's how I tried to start off, I exported a PSD I was working on into Fresco, which it opened w/ all of my layer styles etc. the same but when I tried to use the live paint brush it refused to work unless I shrink my canvas & image to a lil over 4000px-- which is incredibly limiting for me. Considering Procreate is able to handle my 5400x7200px/18x24" 300ppi just fine w/ a layer cap at 9, which is plenty for me as I tend to merge layers often. So I scrunk the image which-- is weird how they did it? You adjust the canvas and then transform all the contents to fit the canvas which was quite annoying to align to all the edges. Once I started painting, the brushes all seem a tad laggy. Maybe it's bc I'm using the 1st gen ipad pro, but honestly lag has never been an issue w/ this device due to hardware performance, it's always bc of the internet connection I have. The watercolor live brushes didn't really feel smooth and freeing like it does look in this and the demos in the app. When i tried to save & exit, Fresco saving the downsized file was taking foreeeevvver. I ended up giving up & auto-closing.Perhaps, all of these issues can be avoided if I worked and started in the app vs started w/ an import but uhhh-- if I can't move files between programs for any reason, I end up stop using that program entirely. CSP for instance on the iPad was great, is a huuge pain in the ass to work w/ when it came to moving files back & forth. I stopped using csp bc of it. Either way, this program kinda feels hella gimmicky in comparison to the others that people use (procreate, the one that borodante uses that I can't remember, or autodesk sketchbook pro etc.). I might try again w/ a blank canvas in the program and see if I can make anything cool/report back w/ my findings but as for now 🤷🏽‍♂️ sorry Adobe, maybe 50 updates later & it will be good?

I almost feel like it's too late for Adobe in this area. Procreate is already so embedded in the art community. There is so much content (tutorials, training videos, classes, etc) for Procreate. Take Photoshop on PC, for example. There are several other art programs on desktop computers, but people just seem to keep right on using Photoshop. Other applications come out with some cool new feature and people seem initially impressed, but then go right back to Photoshop when they really need to get stuff done. Maybe it's because they are used to it and don't want to have to re-learn a new app. Maybe it's because there is so much stuff out there related to Photoshop already. The same may end up being true of Procreate. We'll see. The subscription requirement is definitely going to hurt them. Kyle is a master brush maker though, so that should help. I do agree that Adobe could probably own the Android market if they tried. Android is seriously lacking in that area and Procreate seems to have no interest in going to other platforms. We will see how it all shakes out. I'm sticking to Procreate for now. It's such a great value.

it is because the entire industry depends on Adobe's workflows, companies pipelines are deeply tied to Adobe. It is because, REALLY, Adobe PS and Illustrator go beyond ANYTHING in complexity and features of you can find in every platform, be it iPad, Mac, Linux or Windows. Simple as that. That said by someone that uses to his work Affinity Photo and Designer (and I too hate subscription model). And Clip Studio Paint, and Krita. And willing to purchase next Rebelle 3 for Windows. I have full knowledge and training of each alternative, almost. So, nope, is not for habits. I master the use of Blender, Inskcape and Gimp. And those are said to be really hard to learn. The reasons why a lot of pros go back to PS, AI, etc, is because the alternatives are yet lacking a lot of functionality compared to Adobe's. But hobbyists do not notice it, as what they need feature-wise is waaaay more basic. That said, Affinity is slowly catching up. For purely painting, even in Windows, if you don't have to make complex client work for a bunch of companies, well, I'd just use Clip Studio Paint, Rebelle, Art Rage, Krita, Corel Painter. All them are better for painting than PS. They are just *NOT* better (indeed very incomplete, as are the iPad solutions) for what really is needed for full complex projects where is not just you in your own and your canvas. This said, for anyone just painting on their own (hobbyists, students, or pros that can afford the luxury of not keeping compatibility AND workflows that Adobe apps require and provide. In the professional fields, this is a minority), the subscription in their case makes zero sense. Most people here paint for the love of it, in sessions of 2 - 3 hours top on average ( I know... when I was a hobbyist I'd put 10 hours a day if I'd have the time. Like me, some others. But trust me, is not the majority).

Finally! Ever since that iPad Pro keynote, I’ve been waiting for Adobe to release the full version of Photosh..........they made WHAT?! And they want $10 a month to use a Photoshop action disguised as a watercolor brush?
And they wonder why we left. 😑
