    Kudos for filming in 24p(?) and not slowmo to fudge the results like everyone else seems to be doing :)
    I personally think the shots were slightly too wonky as a Ronin and Movi op, but I can see some applications in a fix :)

    Hi, I realy enjoy your videos and C200 journey. I'm confused why the Ronin S would be helpful if you can only put cr@p glass on it. If you could hang it from a Ready/Ez rig with decent lenses on it (ie 35/50 f1.4), then we'd have something to be excited about.

    Hi, great review as always.
    2 questions:
    - would this work upside down if one would like to take super low shots?
    - is it possible to take the EVF off the normal Canon C200? would the EVF make it completely impossible to use the Ronin S?

    • @Crimsonengine

    Hey Rubidium -- can you let us know if the Ronin S can go inverted with the c200b? It won't with my C200 due to the EVF, but it looks like it *might* just clear on yours? I suppose the cage slightly works against you there by raising the c200 up just a touch.

    • @Crimsonengine

      The ronin-M is better for long takes and all day use, but it takes longer to set up and get balanced. the S is great to grab a quick shot or two.

      Thanks, I really like the ronin-s setup, so I guess I'll go with that. For me personally, the ronin s appears to be easier to operate. The ronin-m requires to be held higher, but for the s you can hold at a lower position and it offers the possibility of mounting a handle, considering the fact that it only weights half of the weight of ronin-m.

  • @TechnicalGamingChannel
    @TechnicalGamingChannel 6 років тому +7

    I agree that there are practical applications for this setup, but the Ronin-S clearly wasn't intended to work with a camera as big as the C200b. In a previous video you talked about using a single handed gimbal with an EZ Rig, and that's pretty much the only way to really get good footage with them. Because you can't flip the Ronin-S upside down with the C200b, it kind of defeats the purpose of using it. The camera is simply too big and heavy to handhold effectively, even with a gimbal. Yeah, practice and technique will do wonders, but an EZ Rig or steadycam mount will always work better in the long run.
    Your footage really doesn't look very smooth compared to a properly stabilized camera. It also looks like you crushed the dynamic range with a curves adjustment in post... If you're going with that look, you might as well use a smaller camera with less dynamic range to begin with like the A7S3, as it would work way better with the Ronin-S.
    Your lens selection doesn't make a lot of sense either. It telescopes when you zoom, which throws off the center of gravity. It's also not a sharp lens. You'd be better off with a prime lens. Canon's STM primes are very affordable, and despite not being as good as L glass, are still worlds sharper than the standard 18-55.
    You should get the camera as close to level as possible before turning the gimbal on BTW. It doesn't just save on battery life, it gives you better stabilization because the gimbal isn't constantly fighting the misaligned center of gravity.
    The handle-mounted monitor is great tip that most reviewers neglect BTW.

      I'm a full time professional freelance photographer that does stills, video, and post production. I've been working professionally for nearly 15 years. I've worked as an assistant camera operator with the full spectrum of gear from DSLRs to the Arri Alexa Mini, RED systems, and more. I've operated dollys worth several times more than the entire setup demonstrated in this video.
      None of what I said is regurgitated from somewhere online. It comes from that nearly 15 years of professional experience.
      If you want to stabilize your footage on a budget, your best option is to save money on the camera, buy a lightweight body like the A7S3 or GH5, a solid roster of prime lenses, a handheld gimbal, and an EZ Rig or something similar.
      Mounting a C200b on a one handed gimbal is something no one working in the film or professional video industry does. It's not that it doesn't work or can't be useful, it's that it's impractical compared to more established solutions like the Ronin 2, steadycams, etc.
      Those things cost more and don't trickle down into prosumer-grade products price points, so I understand the point of the video.
      My point was just that there's a better, more practical way to do this without spending more money. The Ronin-S "working" with a C200b isn't an intended use case, it's a convenient happenstance that provides suboptimal results compared to a more realistic setup.
      More to the point though, what i'm saying isn't just an opinion. Look at the footage. It's shaky, jerky, and overall doesn't look stabilized. There's a reason for that, and it's simply that the gimbal was never intended to be used with a C200b.

      @@TechnicalGamingChannel it looks like you are far away from the filmmaking and stabilizing cameras 🤣 The main task here is to stabilize YOUR camera, not to find any piece of shit mirorless on internet and write about it... or to list camera brands as your experience. Also that the cam must be as close to level as possible speaks that you are probably a troll that have never touched a gimbal 🤣

    • @TechnicalGamingChannel
      @TechnicalGamingChannel 6 років тому +3

      Just because I don't upload my professional work to the UA-cam account I use to browse my personal interests on UA-cam doesn't mean I'm lying about my professional experience.
      You also don't have to be a working professional to understand this isn't the intended use case for the Ronin-S. I think it's pretty obvious, especially given the example footage. The C200b isn't even listed on DJI's website under camera compatibility with the Ronin-S. They explicitly state it's for mirrorless and DSLR-style cameras, not cine/broadcast cameras like the C200b.
      The video is literally about using the C200b on a single handed gimbal, and that's what I addressed. Again, it's obviously an impractical method of stabilization for the C200b and all I was doing is illustrating why and what the alternatives are. If you want to take that as an attempt at trolling or whatever, you're more than welcome to. But I'm not.
      The reason I recommended a cheaper camera like the A7S3 is because it costs a fraction of what the C200b does and gives you more budget to dedicated to required equipment like an EZ Rig or two handed gimbal. I'm not saying the A7S3 or any other similar mirrorless camera is better than the C200b, as that's obviously not true. I'm just recommending a smaller camera for this particular gimbal because that's literally what it was designed for. Hell, with the money you save on a more affordable camera, you could buy the Ronin 2 and eventually upgrade the camera to a C200b. Then you get the best of both options, albeit eventually.
      And yes, it actually does help to properly level the camera, even on a motorized gimbal like the Ronin-S. It helps battery life, can slightly improve performance, and is just good to do in general. It's certainly not required, but it's also certainly worth doing, within reason.
      Really, I don't understand people's propensity for such cynical and dismissive comments. I'm offering constructive feedback based on nearly 15 years of professional experience. I'm not debating the creator. I'm not saying he's wrong. And I'm not trying to argue with other viewers. I'm simply offering my perspective on the presented content.
      He asked for our thoughts, and I gave mine in a constructive, informative manner. You're the ones being overtly dismissive for no reason and adding nothing of value to the conversation.

      @@TechnicalGamingChannel dude, the level is not important! You have to balance your camera to be able to stay off level and not returning to level! And the video is for those who already have c200 and want a lightweight cheap and convinient way to stabilize it. Not what is the best camera for ronin s!
