I've put my Ronin S through 20+ hours in on-set use on two feature films. And it is much more stable than my Zhiyun Crane v2. No up and down foot step movement in my Ronin S shots, which I do get with the Crane v2. And I do walk with bent knees and roll my feet when I shoot with either gimbal. As far as the plate goes, I don't have a problem with that. It takes me a few seconds to swap out plates from my Ronin S to my Magnus tripod. As far as weight goes? Wah, wah, wah all you want. I'm 58 and I used it on a 14-hour shoot, where I put it down 3 or 4 times throughout that time period. And I'm fine. I shot with it the very next day on another film. I feel stronger now. I know there have been a ton of reviews on the Ronin S, but I will be doing my own review given that I've used it in real world situations such as feature films. Thanks for reminding me of what a great decision I made.
Absolutely! Sounds like we agree on several levels here. I also shot all day in the sun on a feature doc and barely set the thing down. The smoothness of the gimbal is great too! I’d love to see a review from your opinion. If you do, please share it with me!
Thanks for confirming that point about the up and down motion (I call it head-bob). I've had a Pilotfly H2 for a little over two years and I've loved everything about it - except the head bob. When I first got it I spent weeks trying different walking methods and even with my most careful step I would still get the bounce. Ultimately my best way to deal with it was to get as wide of a lens as I could with IS, and then hold the camera forward a bit to simulate the angle that the Ronin-S has by design. I assume that forward tilt angle absorbs most of the up and down bounce. If that is the case, I'm definitely going to look into picking this up.
I use the Zhiyun crane plus for my SOny a7iii and 16-35mm lens and simply am not pleased with the result. It works fine, but bounces with steps, doesn't hold the weight well at all, and it is terrible whenever I try to do any parralax movements(very jerky). I preordered the Dji ronin s, but am guessing it's gonna take over a month to receive
The further your legs are spread apart the lower the height of your body. As you walk your legs are moving between the two extremes, this causes the bobbing motion you are seeing. The DJI Ronin has no Z axis to compensate for this but it does have a higher weight than other gimbals. This extra mass requires more energy to move but that will help dampen the movement. Ideally you want something in the style of a Steadycam vest to avoid transferring your movement to the camera.
With the Ronin-M sometimes it sort of jittered side to side before smoothing out. Have you noticed any of that with the S? Thanks for this excellent review, I'm very interested in this system which seems so streamlined, particularly when navigating crowds or narrow doorways. Thumbs UP! All the best!
I know what you’re referring to and I havent had any problems with that on it. Sometimes I have to restart it if things are wonky, but it’s pretty well dialed in.
The focus pull on the GH5/GH5s works with all MFT Lenses, I have the Olympus 7-14mm F2.8 and it works perfectly ;) and with the Viltrox Speedbooster it also works for example with the Canon 18-35mm F1.8 but this Combo is very heavy :/
I like this channel, this space isn’t that saturated as most reviewers aren’t well rounded - entertaining host, sprinkles of motion and graphics, funny bits, to the point structure for people who don’t want to wait for the thing advertised by the thumb. Some channel are technical but dry, some are entertaining but off when it comes to details, most of them have sluggish editing and nearly all of them don’t do motion bc it takes up so much time. Keep it up man
Subscribed, and thanks for the amazing review! you forgot the sport mode because i saw a lot of people going back to their old steady cam for shooting high speed videos, I have the crane 2 for a month now and I'm waiting for the ronin S to get back in stock to upgrade, one thing that i struggled with is the balancing i still can't perfectly balance my canon 80D and sigma 18-35 on it, and the footage out of it is so jerky, I thought i was the only one that had this problem. Again thanks for this helpful review
Ive had mine for about 2 weeks. I was able to get the IR cable to wirk with rec start/stop on my canon 6dm2. My one thing I wish they would have thought about is the case. Any time I want to put it back in the case, I have to mess up my balancing. I was thinking about purchasing a gun pelican case? something that it could lay flat on foam? idk just an idea. Im hoping a real canon cable comes out soon.
Totally! It’s hard to pack for sure! I think you’re on the right track there with going with a pelican case. It’s so weird traveling with it. I haven’t figured it out yet either.
I found the solution on a forum. you have the update the firmware of the ronin. but first download the software on your computer that allows you update ronin. Its Called "DJI pro assistant for Ronin" once you get that downloaded, plug your ronin into your computer and update it. once updated, go into your camera settings while in video mode, hit menu, first red camera menu, 5th page, click "remote control" and enable it.
If we allowed any fully balanced Ronin-S to fit inside the case, the case design would end up being 70% bigger than it is. We decided on the smaller case rather than having the Ronin-S flop around inside forcing everyone to carry a larger case. Also, I haven't seen any mention of the benefit of the case being as lightweight as it is. A pelican style case would almost be 4 times heavier.
As a new videographer I learned ALOT about the history of stabilizers and I’m thankful. At first I was like why is he telling us this then I said I’ve been wanting to know this lol the origin etc.
Just waiting on mine, changed from a crane v1 and chose DJI because of I use their app with my drones and think their software is superb. Hopefully they update it to run with Sony properly. Great vid ✌️
I really like the video! Out of curiosity, what mount are you using between the camera and the DJI plate? That looks like really good set up for getting some clearance for some of the larger lenses.
Great review. I'm assuming what you meant about the quick release plate being compatible with Manfrotto is actually compatible with Arca Swiss type dove tail plate? Or is it not compatible with Arca Swiss plate?
Can you try and max out the weight and see exactly where it stops working in each mode? I'm interested in knowing how safely under the actual threshold their official 3.6KG limit really is.
You mentioned that is has some controls for the Panasonic GH5/5S. I plan on purchasing this for using with my GH4. Does it not work with the GH4 in the same manner? Thanks! Great video!
@@connormccaskill Bummer! I have the GH4 for my DJI S900 drone with dedicated GH4 Gimbal, so I am kind of tied to the GH4. I love the camera though! Still looking forward to getting this! Thanks for the reply!
You CAN use Canon mount adapted lenses on the GH5/GH5s with the focus control via a Speedbooster style adapter. I use my Sigma 18-35 and my 10-20 and you have perfect focus control.
Hey Dave I just wanted to let you know that the ronin s does control focus on other lenses besides Panasonic. It even works with a speedbooster and the canon mount sigma 18-35.
Talking about weight, this is nothing compared to the original Ronin! Running around with like 20lbs of stuff to carry, and you can't even set it down without a stand (that you also have to carry around!) So you're right on, this is very light for what you're getting! Great video, thanks for the review.
Hey Dave, another great video. I've watched this about 4 times and really enjoy your input. I've got a quick question. Where did you get the cable you use for your monitor mounted on the gimbal? I've got a 12" cable and it's thick and obviously too short. Thank you Sir.
Instead of the big dual handle i work with the (Zhiyun Transmount Mini Dual Grip) it s work with any gimble and it is more particle to use , you can also put 2 in at the same place , right and left , and you can still put the tripod under . take a look at that product maybe you gone a like it
FYI just been having my first play with the S this weekend on GH5 & GH5s. My Olympus Pro lenses 17-14 & 14-40 mm both work fine with the manual focus ring, so I’m pretty sure others will too. Of course your mileage may vary!
Good morning. Nice to meet you. I bought this product.(ronin s) It's a good product. I have a question. The balance of the gimbal was carried out through the application. I saw it called "yaw." What is this? What is this axis? Tilt? pan? Roll? Which of these three is it? Thank you.
Kinotika but how did you mount it? Have a link for that setup? DJI says currently there is no way to mount a monitor. Looks like you figured out a way to do it at the cost of the focus wheel.
Ya! The app works with the gimbal not the camera. You can put any camera you want on it really that fits. It's the integration with the focus and record button that varies.
Kinotika so I use the Feiyu A1000 which is basically a mini Ronin S because it have a 45 degree roll motor at the rear which makes it easier to see non flip screen cameras like my Sony. So by default I should like the Ronin S, but in the UK I can get the Crane 2 brand new for £425 compared to £699 for the Ronin S and also the Crane 2 seem lighter and can still handle the higher payload, and also I feel like the charging system on the Ronin S would annoy me over time. It’s been more down to gut feeling as well but watching Brandon Washington’s comparison kinda confirmed that feeling.
John Fontain haha got mine for £200 as well for tobydeals. It’s awesome, just manage the weight and payload and it’s an awesome compact lil gimbal. I carry it with me everyday for no reason cos it’s so compact
I would love to see a comparation between Crane 2 and Ronin- S, but please make it about the end results and smothness of the footage. Soo many people focus on the specs only. As a Crane 2 user I would like to know if i can get better results with the Ronin, I don't really care abut the specs.
You got it! Thank you for giving us that feedback. I think we will have to TOUCH on the specs, but we will focus on getting the best footage possible .
I don’t think so. But the iPhone and android app can control it.... ask dji support. They would know better than I. As far as I know, the answer is no.
Two things: I've been getting super frustrated by this after working with the Ronin M for years. I'm constantly having balancing issues with is and seemingly having to be so much more precise than with my setup on Ronin M. I'll watch your balancing video to see if I can figure out some more tips. As for your monitor connection -- how are you actually connecting the tilt arm to the mounting point? What sort of screw are you putting there? I can't figure it out!
@@connormccaskill Then could you please tell me which gimbal I shld get with the xt3..? Weebil lab is showing jitters and it has wobbling issues that Ive noticed in youtube videos. Please let me know.
Dylan Proctor Not exactly helpful. I’ve done the best I can, I just have to deal with my body type which doesn’t have good upper body strength despite working on it. Many other women might be in the same boat as me.
Kinotika yes sir the bigger camera (1dc)shown in your b roll has a verticle battery grip attached under the base(bottom) of the camera was wondering how well it stays attached when using it with a gimbal
@@connormccaskill thank you for the information, but it is 2 times cheaper to afford a GH5 with a 3-axis stabilizer. I had eyes too big when I bought the camera
No worries! I would watch the tutorials on the DJI UA-cam channel on how to balance the gimbal. You really need to perfectly balance your gimbal when you use it or you’re going to get micro jitters
same here, From what I heard from a DJI developer they are going to most likely support all Canon Model that are available on Canon SDK, so 70d-80d and t4i-t7i etc should eventually be on there however Canon has yet to add Any mirrorless cameras to the Canon SDK although m50 is currently on the list.
ABSOLUTLY! I have heard that the 18-35 will work with it. But the Ronin-S is a MUCH more easy to use gimbal than the M. I love the one handed style over the grips. Puts the camera more at eye level .
I have a question. Maybe you can help with this. So after balancing my Ronin-S and running through the settings. I’ve noticed when i Pan it’s sometimes gets a slight hiccup like it pans smooth then it jerks a tiny bit? Am i not selecting the right settings? Or panning to hard? I’ve updated the Ronin and restored the whole thing. Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t. Very Odd
Make sure to calibrate the gimbal. Look at the manual to figure out the sequence to do this. If that doesn’t work reset to factory settings. I’d advise you to reach out to dji about this. Im not an expert on that
I appreciate it man! I was just seeing you if you feel a little vibration when panning or tilting the gimbal at a 45 degree angle. It pans on the joystick perfectly fine and Smooth but if i Pan with my wrist it’s a different story. DJI has no clue what could be wrong unfortunately. 😭
Thanks a lot for the Review. Very informative. However, since everyone only compares Crane and Ronin S, there is something else, a lot closer: PILOTFLY ADVENTUER. CHeck it out. It certainly deserves a mention in this Gimbal-Discussion (Off-angle motor, close to similar payload, full Sony compatibility and almost half the weight and smaller size)
I have the crane 2 been great except now the joystick came off and after I replaced it , it's acting weird. My friend has the ronin s. As far as stability they both are the same. My crane 2 is really smooth. I also have a ronin m which to me is the most stable out of the 3 I'm speaking about here. I like the ronin but it gets heavy. Just like the crane 2 so I have a mini handle and dual handle. I won't use it without it. The ronin s needs the dual handle out there.
Kinotika a7iii, sigma 35 1.4, sigma 18-35 1.8, and Sony 28mm 2.0. I'm waiting to see what zhiyun tells me about the 1 year warranty. I want the ronin s but the lack of focus wheel working concerns me. I like to shoot manual and would miss that. I have the follow focus on the crane 2.idk what to do lol. I'd only get the s if I can get my crane 2 fixed or replacement and then sell it for 400-500 to put towards a ronin s.
I've put my Ronin S through 20+ hours in on-set use on two feature films. And it is much more stable than my Zhiyun Crane v2. What is the monitor you are using?
Accessory used to mount the Monitor? Smallrig 1960? 1855?
Work in Sony lenses? (like Sony a6500 lenses, E mount)
Hi beautiful review ! How do you attach the screen
? And what's the screen reference ? :-) Cheers from france !
ua-cam.com/video/V_dNH0hc0uI/v-deo.html sorry for the answer!
I will make a separate video about this on my personal channel: ua-cam.com/users/davealtizer
I used the standard screw FROM the actual focus wheel. The official DJI screw basically.
Thanks my current solution is much more complicated.... I'll give that a go
Will it work ok with fujifilm xt3..?
You can put it on there but I’m not sure it’ll interface with the ronin yet
@@connormccaskill Then could you please tell me which gimbal I shld get with the xt3..? Weebil lab is showing jitters and it has wobbling issues that Ive noticed in youtube videos. Please let me know.
where do you get that screen attachment from please?
Wondering which would be better for a C100 MKII for a person who doesn’t have good upper body strength? THis or the Crane2?
Up to you. For me it’s about the software. Dji simply has better software
Hit the gym
Dylan Proctor Not exactly helpful. I’ve done the best I can, I just have to deal with my body type which doesn’t have good upper body strength despite working on it. Many other women might be in the same boat as me.
You got potential, I can see you with 22m subs
How stable was the battery grip on the 1dx and what make is the battery grip
Battery grip? The 1DX has the extra grip built into the camera itself. It isnt an accessory .
Kinotika yes sir the bigger camera (1dc)shown in your b roll has a verticle battery grip attached under the base(bottom) of the camera was wondering how well it stays attached when using it with a gimbal
I sotted some Nashville shots!! Love!
Came here for a review and got a history lesson - Bonus!
What is the name of the thing whats inbetween the plate of the ronin-s en the little camera in the studio? By the way nice video man!
Thank you Sander! That is just a Canon EF-M to EF adapter
Your video is very interesting But what kind of stabilizer for a Panasonic AG-DVX200 camera?
You may need to use a bigger gimbal like the original Ronin or MoVI M10
@@connormccaskill thank you for the information, but it is 2 times cheaper to afford a GH5 with a 3-axis stabilizer. I had eyes too big when I bought the camera
Hi please Help
How can't I fixed the micro jitter on the pan I have a fuji xt3 sorry for the bad English I'm from Austria
No worries! I would watch the tutorials on the DJI UA-cam channel on how to balance the gimbal. You really need to perfectly balance your gimbal when you use it or you’re going to get micro jitters
Will this work with the new blackmagic pocket 4k?
Yes. But you have to flip the mount upside down
name of monitor support???? THANKSSS!!!!
SmallHD focus monitor
What about Tilta G2X?
That is a great comparison to it for sure. We aren't getting one
Always killing the UA-cam Game! great Review boss! Love the M50 combo. I run it as well. little sad about the issue with no focus report
thank you!!! Ya it’s a shame. I wish canon would work with DJI on it
same here, From what I heard from a DJI developer they are going to most likely support all Canon Model that are available on Canon SDK, so 70d-80d and t4i-t7i etc should eventually be on there however Canon has yet to add Any mirrorless cameras to the Canon SDK although m50 is currently on the list.
So if i used this while there was heavy snow fall would it be damaged?
from someone that owns a gh5 - sigma 18-35mm - ronin m , would you upgrade to the ronin s?
ABSOLUTLY! I have heard that the 18-35 will work with it. But the Ronin-S is a MUCH more easy to use gimbal than the M. I love the one handed style over the grips. Puts the camera more at eye level .
What camera is on the gimbal he has it looks like a small cannon
Great info. I’m definitely getting one 😎👍
Thanks Bruz!
It pans on the joystick perfectly fine and
Smooth but if i Pan with my wrist it’s a different story.
How exactly do you attach the SmallDS monitor you use?
I use the screw that comes with the Ronin-S to screw it in on the side
I have the crane 2 been great except now the joystick came off and after I replaced it , it's acting weird. My friend has the ronin s. As far as stability they both are the same. My crane 2 is really smooth. I also have a ronin m which to me is the most stable out of the 3 I'm speaking about here. I like the ronin but it gets heavy. Just like the crane 2 so I have a mini handle and dual handle. I won't use it without it. The ronin s needs the dual handle out there.
That’s great. What camera do you use?
Kinotika a7iii, sigma 35 1.4, sigma 18-35 1.8, and Sony 28mm 2.0. I'm waiting to see what zhiyun tells me about the 1 year warranty. I want the ronin s but the lack of focus wheel working concerns me. I like to shoot manual and would miss that. I have the follow focus on the crane 2.idk what to do lol. I'd only get the s if I can get my crane 2 fixed or replacement and then sell it for 400-500 to put towards a ronin s.
DJI will apparently be doing the focus wheel with sony. But idk when itll be out.
Kinotika externally or internally like with the gh5 and the ronin
Is this a good buy or would osmo pocket be a better buy
Hey kinotika what is the lens that your using on your canon 1dc
That is a CONTAX Zeiss 28mm f/2.8. I have a full CONTAX Zeiss set and love it
I like a lot about the Ronin S but the weight is pretty high especially if you only want to use a smaller camera with it.
Then look at a smaller gimbal from Z crane potentially
Where is the part you drop water over that thing? A k a thumbnail!!??
Just a sick thumbnail!
Is ok for gx80?
Smashing review I even learned a few that I had not though of like the fact that it is actually smoother than most other Chinese gimbals.
Totally! Thanks for the kind words!
