Hard to enjoy cycling when you're fat though and it looks fricking horrible especially in lycra. You need to be in shape to cycle not necessarily rail thin but not a fatty.

@@garysellars8914: With respect, I offer a different opinion. I'm an old guy, more fat than slim, but maybe the only question that really needs to be addressed is, do you enjoy cycling? If you do, then get on your bike and go. People who think you're too fat or too old cannot diminish your enjoyment of cycling unless you allow them to do so, and even then, it's only in your own mind. Look forward ("I'm enjoying this and will continue to enjoy it") rather than back ("People will think I'm foolish").

@David H. Yes but you'd enjoy it more if you lost weight plus you'd be much better uphill etc. You think of the weight of a bag of sugar and then think of 20 or something of those holding you back. Better for your health your bike everything. Most fat folk just don't want to eat less.

One of them was an extremely big and I do mean big girl wearing Lycra and I was tempted to ask where she brought her cycling specific kit from as I cannot get any to fit me that would look decent . I of cause was never going to do that because of the embarrassment that would cause to her. Instead in our group we had a chat about sizes and all of us agreed it was wonderful to see her out on a bike. As I am sure many others in the cafe were thinking as well. Just pleased to say that the majority of us who are either riding the latest CF steed a sit up and beg or bone shaker bike are brothers and sisters and when in need we are there to support each other.

a lot of overweight people are sacerd of being constantly hungry during a diet. i was very overweight myself and couldnt think of losing weight because this strange fear of hunger was scaring me. when i noticed that its not about the amount of food, but about the kind of food you eat that makes the difference, i started to lose weight very easily. since i started my diet i wasnt hungry one single time. i just learned what kind of food to eat, and thats pretty much all you need to know. i am a cyclist as well, and i lost 20 kilos. it makes such a huge difference on so many aspects of life. i couldnt believe it, before it happened. I'm glad you revisit this topic from time to time. I rode a century last Saturday with guys that were middle age (I'm 61), younger guys and even a 13 yr old (son of one of the riders), most of the older guys, certainly didn't look the picture of pro cyclist. Our average mph was 17 for the whole ride. These guys routinely drop other riders all the time. I know plenty of overweight guys that can flat out fly on their bikes. If you put the time in on your saddle, body weight isn't an issue. BTW, I'm 6'5 260lbs. If you're ever in Riverside CA, come ride with us. Len keep riding...never stop. Ride on.

I've been in the bike industry for nearly 40years and never once has a frame failed due to the rider being overweight. As Leonard mentioned he's had an issue with wheels and I can agree that does tend to be the problem but it's not massive failures just the odd broken spoke. You will usually get a year then think about having an upgrade to something stronger. The thing is don't let your weight hold you back from enjoying your bike.

Cycling is great exercise for anybody, you can be big, heavy and extremely fit. The former England rugby captain Martin Johnson is a giant of a man, over 120 kilos and an absolute monster on a road bike, seriously impressive. I am on the big side at 95 kilos and have had wheels built for me that have improved my riding experience by being stronger and noticeably stiffer. It doesn't matter that they are a bit heavier than some because they roll beautifully.

A couple of weeks ago (having by that time already myself ridden about 35 miles), I rode past an industrial estate at turn out time. Most people were leaving by car but there was a mixture of people on foot and cyclists too. I asked myself the question "How strong (fit) am I now?" - so I purposefully rode through the strung out cyclists leaving work in the dedicated cycle lane there, passing most at a fair pace too (surprising myself with it as well). About a mile away from the industrial estate, I caught a young man in his late teens or early 20's at the very head of the peloton. I passed him too at around ~ 18 mph to his ~ 16 or so. He took umbrage at my passing though so sped up - so, so did I. So for another half mile or so, we rode abreast, by this time at perhaps 20 mph. He had had to stand on his peddles, I didn't... This race came to an end when I lost my form and slowed down through laughing at what I found myself I was doing _racing a bloody kid_ . Yes he eventually did get away! But I am 57 years old and used to weight 27½ stone (and I am still overweight too - but now, only just). I also had a lot more clothing on and a reflective windsail type PPE jacket (I don't do lycra at all) along with a crash helmet and lights (none of which my young challenger had the sense to port).
Yes, it did give me a bloody good laugh at the time ultimately causing me to lose to the youngster (I discovered I cannot laugh and ride quickly). I have come a long way in getting my fitness back in the last 3 years. And for the record, I now ride an average of more than 5 but less than 6 evenings a week with a minimum distance of 17 miles. I spice these up with interlacing my standard rides with journeys of 50 or 60 miles or more to get out to see somewhere new.
You *can* do it! Keep safe, everyone.

One of the great things about being over 60 is that I don’t care about what others think about me being on my bike! I have taken an village style ebike and converted it to a cross trainer to where I can ride on the miles/km of trails around our village here in Germany as well as the pavement. I’m not a cyclist, just an ‘ol guy who likes to ride my ebike through the Germany countryside and trails and enjoy the outdoors and get exercise. Since following your rides I can already tell that my heart rate is lower. While cyclist are working about getting hit by a passing car, the only thing I worry about is hitting a pot-hole on the trail. Safe travels Leonard and keep riding!!!

My weight fluctuates. Probably too much. But in 30 years of cycling I have weighed about 100 kilos most of that time. Sometimes more. But as you know, we can find cycling wear that fits if we look around. I have broken carbon, aluminum, and steel frames. Dozens of wheels, and every single part of a bike other than some of the hardware. And only one bad crash due to equipment failure when a pedal spindle snapped off. I have no intention of ever stopping riding as long as I am able. Your channel is by far my favorite, and very professionally done I might add.

I have the highest regard for overweight cyclists, and runners, going out there and doing good for themselves. I have never been in that category but I have observed and been inspired by those who have the courage to jump on a bike or puff around a lake or park to get healthy.
As a cyclist and runner I also know the very much bigger psychological component of these activities. They make me feel like a kid again. Sheer joy is to be found on that bike or running around feeling the fresh air in my face.
The good part about cycling is that it is a lot easier on joints when carrying extra weight and is thus an excellent way to get started with exercise; never know, might end up running :)

Hello Leonard, for a few weeks I didn't have the time to watch your videos. But this title caught me. I WILL re-start cycling this year! 🙂 About the weight. There is a video of Durianrider available in that he mentioned some problems of Ultegra and Duraace cranks of the current and 2nd last generation. Some riders over 100 kg had issues with these glued cranks. 105er (casted, not glued) don't seem to be affected.

I really admire you Leonard. Cycling is not limited to stick thin cyclists, it’s for everyone. Anyone who decries an overweight person for cycling is missing the point. Ignore them. Don’t forget the mental health benefits and feel good factor of cycling regularly. It’s like food for the soul😊💪❤️

ALWAYS find "extremely well put information" here with Leonard. I myself have gained this year, and we are not even passed April. Just last year I got up to goal, lost 20 kilos, AND reached my 100 kilometers when doing my rides. But because of some family issues, I now think that I'm at the zero mark again! :(
So, it's time again to get out there on my wonderful bike and start training again to lose the unwanted weight again, AND get to that 100 kilometer mark again.
I'm 60 now, hope this helps the men out there whom are thinking of taking control of their health!
And stick with this channel, Leonard will always be encouraging :-)

Good words of wisdom from Len. For me, my return to cycling after two decades (gulp that sounds massive) was assisted by switching to MTB pedals & shoes. The flush cleats are easier for walking. Wearing baggy MTB style shorts although not as aero, help me feel much less self conscious when ordering my flat white. But as you say, get out there. Enjoy the fitness & the fun.

Great video and advice Leonard. Discovered I had heart disease aged 69 last year and I am convinced that if I hadn't run swum & cycled I would not be here today. Just take it more slowly these days. Whats a pain to me is finding cycling specific clothing that doesn't make me look like a beached whale. Although one of my mates disagreed with me on that and told me they did. They're called maternity smocks apparently. Don.t you just love your mates. Stay safe .Ted

At 50 years old and 95kg I am definitely in the mamil camp. My attitude is sod whatever others may think. I'm out enjoying my local country side on my bike. Both my bikes are metal framed. My hybrid is aluminium and my gravel bike is 835 Reynolds steel so no issues with my bodyweight. I'm not the fastest climber but boy can I get some speed descending ( current record is 48 mph (yes mph!) )

I have also cut down on over eating..I have converted one of my road bikes to a mid drive electric assist system using a bafang system. I Absolutely would recommend this for road riding if you don’t like killing your joints. Or don’t like hills.

There is only 1 question you need to ask. It is not am I too fat or too old to cycle. It is : Do I like doing it. Who cares what the rest of the world thinks. If you have the money, the time, the motivation and enjoy it, go for it :)
4 months ago I was in bed for 3 weeks, could not even stand to go to the bathroom. Back completely scr3wed. I started walking. I walk a lot. Only costs a pair of decent walking shoes. Recently I started going on my bike. I only have a city bike, you know the kind, the kind that feels like it weighs 500kg and does not go very fast. However, now I can do 22km when I go out in the evening after work. I do not care who sees me, or what they think of me all sweaty and sometimes gasping for air. It is me-time, mental health time. Go out and do whatever makes you feel happier than before you went out :-)

I really think a very important reason cycling is the best way to exercise ,is the ability to get a thorough workout with very little risk for joint or connective tissue injury . This is especially important for folks with extra weight on their frames as that promotes strain and risk of injury due to the increased weight burden.

I have a cannondale ally framed road bike. I am an obese 100kg+ 50+ male. You got me thinking about frame weight limits. It seems cannondale don’t specify a max weight on any of their frames. Good news both for me and for my local pie shop!
By the way, would I have seen you slogging up Old Winchester Hill this afternoon? I was coming down the hill on my motorcycle. That looked like hard work (for you, not me) 😀 I’ve crawled up there a few times myself on my pushbike. Only the prospect of tea n cake at the Sustainability Centre kept me going.

Great advice Lenoard, because every time I have brought a bike I never thought about the weight limit, I think I've been lucky so far, but as I've been dieting I've lost 1.5st so hopefully when I do by the next road bike (as I would like a carbon one) I won't have any problem with its weight limit.

Dear Leonard, This is a very important message illustrating the judgemental nature of some of our fellow, narrow minded, countrymen. Well said. Frame weight for some bikes, gravel and touring bikes, are usually 180 kg. This is only important regarding the weight a rider will add to the bike on a tour. I do take your point about spokes and other components but it does mean there are bikes available for heavier riders.
One other point I would like to share. If you would like to lose some weight, there are 2 things you can do. Firstly, stop eating carbohydrates as much as possible. Healthy Grains are not healthy! Second, adopt the habit of intermittent fasting, you would very surprised at the result. You can check out expert information on UA-cam and ignore the food industry’s misleading advertisements. My suggestion is to watch Sten Ekbergs channel. Dieting doesn’t work, a change of habit does. I’m down from just over 13 stone to just over11 since the start of this year and I feel great.

Just a point of interest, Raleigh put 40 hole rear wheels in their 'Twenty' bikes. ( The 'Twenty' was Raleigh's most numerous frame ).
The reason for this was students had their girlfriends sat on the rear rack. 28 hole rear wheels collapsed.
My BSA Sports from 1951 has 36 hole front and 40 hole rear. With a rear rack, these bikes could take the occasional passenger to work.

I am 51 I only started cycling again last year I lost two stone weight but I put back half stone over winter . I know I will lose it again I'm back doing 60 miles in a ride again some days I'd it's warm enough out . I don't perform so well when it's cold . Hears a thing we have to be aware of if colestril level . I have a health check booked at the doctor . My family has a history of strokes high blood pressure and diabetes . I want to make sure I'm healthy enough . I recently heard of a very fit runner who dropped dead becouse of high cholesterol so it really is worth getting a check up . I know my diet needs improvement I eat fast food like burger and chips and donar kebab and crisps cakes and biscuits I know I need to cut back on all that rubbish . It's easier said than done but it will be worth it . I have the cycling stuff dialed in now all I need to do is figure out how to change the habit of a life time and start eating good .

By better, I'm guessing that you mean you will be able to ride further and faster? On that score I can only agree but I respectfully disagree about having to live the cyclists lifestyle off the bike too. We aren't pros and the majority of us overweight, middle age cyclists ride our bikes for fun and fitness. Eating healthily is very wise; trying to live the life of a professional athlete is quite another.

I always hear about spokes breaking... I bought the cheapest 700C wheelset from Chain Reaction (under C$200 for the pair) and the front wheel was a 12 spoke 0x lacing. Even when I was 120kg I never had a problem with that wheel. In fact the only problem I ever had was when I slammed into the side of a Hyundai doing about 30km/h. Even then only one spoke broke (and the rim had a small crease where it bent. I wasn't repairable, but it did still hold air.

I hate to admit this but I am stick thin. I wasn't always this way and becoming stick thin was never my goal. But I got this way now only because I was afraid to lose that all of a sudden was given to me by the grace of God. Well that is what I like to believe. What was given to me was the ability to ride as hard as I want for as long as I want. Getting to that point did not come easily or quickly. It came with about 5 years of really hard work and sticking to it and evolved into a passion for riding. I still have the passion for riding but I am now afraid that I will lose the ability to go out riding every day for as hard as I want for as long as I want if I don't keep it up every day. And I do mean every day... Just ask Leonard. But I still look forward every day to getting out and going riding even if it is raining so hard that you can only see 30 feet or ~10 meters in front of you. Just ask for my ride details of the day before. Oh, and it was really cold yesterday too.
