Easy Haupia Recipe
Ingredients:
1 can (13 oz) coconut milk amzn.to/2Mts3GM
¼ cup granulated sugar amzn.to/39Gkzuc
5 tablespoons cornstarch amzn.to/2PZ6yQj
1/2 cup water
Directions:
Lightly grease an 8x8 pan with non stick cooking spray and set aside.
In a medium mixing bowl add water, cornstarch, and sugar. Whisk until well combined. Set aside.
Add coconut milk to a medium sized pan over medium high heat and heat until the liquid just starts to bubble. Stirring frequently so the milk does not burn.
Then add the cornstarch mixture to the pan and continue to stir. Heat until the mixture starts to thicken and resembles pudding. Remove from heat.
Pour the haupia into the prepared 8x8 pan (amzn.to/39Lt47j) and allow to cool. Then place pan in the refrigerator until set, about 2 hours or you can leave it overnight.
Cut into squares and ENJOY!

We make this in Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 😌 We call it Tembléque...
So awesome!

Aw mahalo!
I was raised half in nanakuli and also hilo. 2 different environments, yet the hawaiian Aloha still the same. I love
And miss hawaii's beauty, people, and foods.
Nothing and Nowhere else compares.
Luckily I have my children and grandchildren who makes up for being so far away from hawaii.
UA-cam videos and music keeps me connected.
Hawaii no ka oi
So good. I ended up using Brown sugar and Tapioca Starch. I also boiled the coconut with pieces of Banana leaf to put some of the Banana leaf flavor into the Coconut Milk. Tastes so good!
Sounds great!
In Puerto Rico we call this tembleque. We leave it in small containers and top it with cinnamon. 😁😁
Ooh. I'll have to try that.
It is my very favorite besides Kulolo. Mahalo Nui for sharing.
Mine too!
Little Rock, Arkansas - 12/03/23 just made AGAIN! It is my absolute favorite treat and I’ve never traveled beyond just a few states away. This is MY favorite way to experience culture. Thank you!!!!

Yummy thank you !
My pleasure 😊
I use arrowroot [1/3 cup to one can of rich Coconut milk]as thickener, with just a little raw sugar so as not to overwhelm the coconut taste. I blend all ingredients in my blender. I also put in some cardamon and saffron to make it more Indian. A little Rose water is good addition too. After blending I can add some pistacios which also makes it more Indian. My haupia is truly a hapa Hawaiian/ hapa Indian dessert. It is very ono. You must try it.
Thanks for sharing
I'm indian and i too got the exact same idea of using rose water & cardamom, adding saffron will make it more good.
Can i use tapioca starch instead of arrowroot ?
Sounds delicious!!!!
Just waiting for mine to set🙃 cant wait to eat it. Reminds me of being back in O'ahu.
Exciting. Can't wait to hear how it was.
@@KeepingItRelle its actually not setting right so im going to leave it in the refrigerator over night. See how it is in the am. But it taste yummy. Had a little hehe.
Thank you ❤
You're welcome
Well followed the instructions, and I ended up with a pudding consistency. Am trying it again today hoping for better results.
Hmm. It may not have cooked down long enough. Be sure to cook until it thoroughly thickens up and allow to set overnight for best results.
I thought I cooked it too long as it was pretty thick. Mine too came out creamy after two hours. Wife came home with donuts so I stuffed the cream in them and it was delicious. I will leave the rest to sit overnight and see if it hardens up.
@@josephstjames6642 I have made it several times since, and it turned out like coconut jello
Mahalo!!!
Thanks for watching!
This looks delicious! I would like to make this for a party but have to make it ahead of time. How long does it keep in the fridge?
Store covered in an airtight container and it will keep for a couple of days in the refrigerator.
@@KeepingItRelle thank you so much ❤️!
Have you tried to do a coconut Walter cornstarch slurry??? Extra coconuty or no good??? Curious yeah...
I haven’t tried it.
I was going to a Lū`au in Hawaii and a tour bus with a tour guide brought us there and he was like “there’s an amazing dessert called Haupia....I can eat a bunch of it.....but I promise you it will make you shit” I never laughed so hard in my life and I was 10 years old then.
It's amazing what stories we remember as kids.
Aloha Relle! If I want to make the haupia a bit creamier, what would you recommend I add? More coconut milk? I’ve seen some other recipes that added in whole milk as well, but it seemed that actually made the texture more pudding like instead of the squares I’m used to! Mahalo!
I have a recipe for soft set haupia that is used on sweet potato haupia pie bars. That on is creamy, but it does not set like a jello consistency that the classic haupia squares do.
Ended up making the haupia squares just like your recipe, and it was so ono!
So I came to this video because I was curious if Haupia was anything like Puerto Rican Tembleque. Turns out it’s almost identical except we don’t use water. There are so many different recipes out there with different ratios but I’ve always made mine with only coconut milk, sugar, and cornstarch and it is VERY creamy and it still sets up like a jello or a flan would.
In Puerto Rico we call it tembleque
Ooh nice. Thanks for sharing.
I feel it's a bit different to Tembleque
Can I use Arrowroot starch, instead for this?
I have never tried it before. I'm not too certain.
@@KeepingItRelle I found someone, who did after asking. And also someone who used tapioca. Thank for the reply.
@@jadeitehaywood2383 I believe arrowroot is the traditional way
@@victorl3969 arrowroot in most pacific islands is called pia.. so you not wrong
In Puerto Rico we call this dessert tembleque because it jiggles.
Love it
This with vanilla bean mixed in and maybe mango on top
Sounds yummy.
Can you make a haupia cake and do a video?
Ooh sounds yummy
@@KeepingItRelle I made one but the center haupia did not solidify for some reason. Was a 2 layer. I used corn starch
@@KeepingItRelle so I had followed another haupia recipe for the cake. I followed yours and made just haupia. Next time I make a cake will follow yours for that part. It thickened quick and more of what I expected thanks
Your recipe says 1/2 cup of water but in the video it looks like 1 cup. I followed the recipe twice using 1/2 cup water and it thickened within seconds, had to pour it out quickly. Result was medium pudding consistency. Taste is good but was disappointed that I could only scoop it not cut into squares. What adjustments do you think I should make?
It's 1/2 cup of water. If the haupia isn't setting it needs to be cooked down longer. Pudding consistency happens when you don't cook it as long. Hope this helps. Have a great day.
I’ll give it a try…Thanks!
Sorry I don’t have IG so I’m reaching out here. With the Maui devastations, how are you and fam doing?
If this is not an appropriate time to answer, I understand completely,. 🙏🙏🙏
Mahalo for checking in. My family and I are safe.
@@KeepingItRelle Thank goodness you and family are safe and sound. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
I forgot to say, add an equal amount of water as well.
👍🏼
But the original recipe before cornstarch the Hawaiian natives used arrowroot and coconut milk to make haupia
Yes, you can make it like that if you prefer
Aunty can I use flour to thicken instead ?
I’ve never tried it before.
Hello baboose wats da amount of corn starch ,sugar water, coconut milk lol awayyyyyy
Hi. All recipe instructions and ingredients are listed in the description box. Thanks.
Baboons it’s in the description 😁
*Baboose
I have a question why did mine still stay gooy
If it doesn’t set well this usually means it wasn’t cooked down enough.
@@KeepingItRelle ok thank you
What are the portions of each ingredient?
All recipe instructions and ingredients are listed in the description box if you ever need them.
@@KeepingItRelle Mahalo. I made some today. It was easy and delicious. I couldnt believe I have been buying them from the store all these years. It is so easy and cheap to make. Mahalo plenty again.
What's the recipe for your haupia
Recipe is in the description
loved the recipe, but the music is very loud and your voice is very quiet
I appreciate the feedback. My audio has gotten much better. Check out some of my newer videos.
Corn starch, sugar and water…… how much of each?
Recipe is listed in the description box
Wonder I’ve been searching for months an easy way to make haupia without looking for coconuts n grating the meat
Awesome. Hope you enjoy.
How much the measurements of the ingredients? Kinda hard no more measurements. Just gotta guess?
You can find the full recipe written in the description box of this video.
Omgg anyone tried it with less sugar or stevia..
You might be able to make it with sugar replacements. Decreasing the amount of sugar may change the texture and affect it setting. I haven't tried it, but if you do let me know.
