These are M1s, and M1IPs being taken out of long storage in the high desert. They are on their way to Aniston Alabama to be broken down for rebuild. Once broken down they will be retrained and sent to Lima Ohio to become M1A2SEPV3s.
I counted 95 tanks. I'm back, 3 years later, September 2023, still counting. This time I count 97 tanks, and about 14 are single oads in the front of the train, the rest double loads.
wow wow WOW this is Awesome. Ive been there a few times, seen lots of great trains there and along 58 but nothing like this / So Cool you share it with us thank you!
Those all look like older model M1's. Like M1A1. None have the independent commander's sight found on the M1A2, and several are missing road wheels - most commonly the middle two. Also looking at the variety of paint schemes (tan, olive, and three-color NATO) I think that these are all older model tanks going to disposal or possibly remanufacture into newer versions.
@nowonyuno They use modified M113's at the NTC to represent threat vehicles. M1's would be horribly expensive to run as OPFOR vehicles due to the cost of running their turbine engines.
Former Abrams operator here. Never got to see the trains travel between bases, as I was at either end waiting for them. I also became the UMO (Unit Movement Officer) who's job is to supervise and plan the rail movement of the vehicles. Every one of those tanks has fuel (not much admittedly) and is capable of being driven for a good distance. All ammo and installed weapons like the mounted machine guns are not present however for obvious reasons. The most back breaking part is doing the tiedown thing, and after that guiding the vehicles just so onto the cars is much harder than you think. Another important thing to note is that Abrams tanks (and Bradley IFV's) aren't driven everywhere. We transport them via truck (HEMTT) to the loading and unloading zones. Driving the vehicle is only done in short distances for maintenance or fueling, longer distances are only traveled for training exercises and proper war. I could keep going, but congrats for reading this far! Best job I ever had!
Well captured. Three different angles and different places. No shaking of camera. Never a dull moment for the train enthusiasts. The sirens in the beginning and no train visible, add drama to the incoming giant! Great video!
i used to work for sp signal here in the 1980s. what a amazing exciting place. non stop trains 24/7 365. probably one of the best places in america for rail fans, (also cajon pass about 100 miles southeast of here on interstate 15) this is no place for inexperienced engineers and conductors. very easy to stringline a train out here. (pulling lighter weight cars off the tracks around a curve if there is too much weight on the back of the train. generally a train should be loaded heaviest cargo front. a 4500' train will cross over itself here on the over pass. i worked out of palmdale but loved it when we had jobs in mojave and tehachapi
I lived near the Cajon pass and have seen some of the longest trains I've ever seen there. I once seen a train that had at least 80 striker fighting vehicles on it, it was very cool.
Lifelong UK Railway enthusiast enjoyed watching all twelve plus minutes of that. Thanks for posting. Maybe an illusion created by the lens, considering the size of the USA, what surprised me was to see the very tight radii of some of the curved parts of those sections of track. Here in little old UK, such tight curves are rare. We have long freight trains in the UK ~ helps keep freight off our traffic laden Roads and Motorways, but nowhere near as long as you have over there. Impressive stuff.

11,640,000 pounds of tanks (not including the train). Also, looks like the center wheel section goes out more often than the others and they are apparently scavenged quite often.
Just assorted Abrams variants going to the Lima plant to be overhauled? Only once seen something like that coming from Arizona to Michigan, the train, I think, had Bradleys on it. Saw it somewhere in the desert, passed over the bridge and only got a quick glance.
Nice video, my only suggestion is to edit out the parts where there is only track to view. As an example, it is a full 67 seconds in the beginning before the first engine appears.
THM SGR yeah... too bad there isn't also some sort of software that lets you trim your videos so that the viewer doesn't need to do your job for you.... oh wait...
@niels lund They are probably headed for the Sierra Army Depot for storage. The Army regularly upgrades and rebuilds them to new condition at the Anniston Army Depot in Alabama and the Lima, Ohio tank plant. There has been no new production in years.
Back in the '90s we and our friends used to drive up to the loop and sit and watch for the train. I counted 97 Abrams, close to the number required for a Second Division Armored Brigade, I believe. That's supposed to be about 116 MBTs. This train was hauling about 6300 tons of MBTs.
On a previous video of tanks being transported east bound over Tehachapi the tanks where transported on 6 axle flat wagons. These proved extremely noisy as the flanges squealed due to there being no lateral 'give' in the 3 axle trucks round sharp corners. I cannot see, because of the shadows, if these wagons are 4 or 6 axle, I would assume the double loads (124 ton) are 6 axle, unless the tanks are stripped out, and the single loads 4 axle?
I saw a similar train leaving the ALCO Plant in Schenectady, NY loaded with Patton tanks headed for Korea in the early 19590's. Just part of our Forever War.
Aren't the M1s going to get that long-overdue A2 upgrade/rebuild/refit, I heard about, or something? 6:06 - That would explain why I don't see the diesel or original equipment jet turbine engine modules that hang off the back side (just behind the treads) of any of them!

A question, how are the engines midway back controlled, by cable or radio? Also when an engine is backward how do you control them without someone at the controls? Excellent video by the way... Audio fantastic...
The gun tube on a tank can rotate 360 degrees for firing . When transported by rail or truck the tube is is rotated over the back deck where the engine is and locked down .
One crew in the first cab. The two engines in the middle could ether be remote control DPUs or Manned helpers with another crew. That area is a steep mountain pass
If you look at the tanks they look like they are going to be refurbished, because there are no mounts for a .59 caliber machine gone by the the tank commander's hatch or no antennas
Kornami notice @ the head end for 13 cars it’s a single tank? I’m guessing either a low load limit flat which doesn’t make much sense, an attempt to keep the head end weight down, should there be an accident, less armor to clean up off the ground, or more likely less weight up front to keep the head engines from pulling out a draw bar.
