I think the most important thing for me on this is that more exploration ships means that CIG need to properly cater for explorers and non-combat gameplay in the not-too-distant future 😊
I really love all the theory-crafting with the Odyssey vs. the Carrack. One thing I think people are underestimating is, with the Odyssey being such a large ship, it's not going to be automatically easy to find and mine quantanium. Quantanium can be time-consuming to locate, and especially locate it where there's enough room to maneuver an Odyssey around to mine with it. Don't get me wrong, I adore mining, and the Odyssey really has some potential upside, but I've done enough mining runs to know that "once in a while" even the best miner can accidentally blow up a rock. Heavy damage from a mining accident in deep space... now that's an epic storyline :)
@@raymcpherson7449 Good Point! I have blown my Mole from a moon surface to WAY off the moon in orbit from a rock explosion, but it didn't blow up the Mole :)
yeah, except we should expect better scanners for quantanium on that odyssey. it's not a tiny mole or even smaller prospector. It's not even a dedicated miner of course. But if it's designed to explore, not pathfinder. lol well, there's the answer.
@@niklasdahlgren7641 It will be helpful for sure! But it does take time to launch a ship, locate the stuff, move the Odyssey over to get it, and mine it. There is also no guarantee the refining is "instant" with the quantanium that was mined. There could be a "wait state" while it makes the fuel. It's all theory, and fun to talk about! All that "time" theoretically the Carrack could be going for fuel. How "deep" will space get in SC... its a fun mystery - :)
1. I think at least for exploration, the drones on the Carrack won’t give it much of an advantage because drones as well need some kind of fuel to fly and explore, most likely they have a limited range as well but I could see it have niche uses like sending in drones in a cave. 2. As you pointed out, the Carrack is more of a pathfinder, it cannot go and explore unknown space alone in the same way the Odyssey can. If a new system is found, the Odyssey would probably go explore that system while the Carrack goes back to refuel. 3. With the larger hangar the Odyssey can cover some of its weaknesses with specialized support ships like a dedicated scanning vessel or repair ship. The Carrack might be able to do something similar with the exchangeable modules but we don’t know yet what that might entail. In the end, I think both are amazing ships for different purposes, I would give the overall “exploring” edge to the Odyssey because it can actually go out and explore independently without returning essentially as long as it has food. However, what I really love and am excited for is to have a Carrack and Odyssey exploring together. When the Carrack finds something it can map it, send the Odyssey to check it while it goes and gets fuel and supplies before returning to continue exploring with the Odyssey.
It's good to see more top tier exploration ships to compete with the Carrack and also have different specialized features. More variety and options is good
I think the only thing I would have liked to see instead of the Odyssey is a xeno-ship. Already have the Banu Defender and waiting on the Merchantman. Why go human when you can go different? :-D
@@longhaulpreacher5823 i know what you mean, i want to see more midsize Xeno ships to compete with the Connie/MSR, like a Banu ship in between the Defender and BMM.
I kind of see the Odyssey as more usable as an exploration org's mobile base. Without having to spend the thousand bucks plus for a Kraken, which isn't exploration focused.
But what if you have both? I have the kraken to be a mobil base that will fly some where and park in space to do refuel, repairs and storage from one ship to the other. Got the Obyssey on another account and it would like you said be a better forward base from the main location.
Another thing about the Odyssey compared to the Carrack is that it can house dedicated exploration ships and sustain them long term: this is the ship that can make a Terrapin shine or make a 315p able do it's real job, which is pathfinding, but don't have the range to get where they can be employed. This is less specialized but offers more flexibility for in deep exploration of unknown system where there are no infrastructures to rely on. I think the drones on the Carrack are different then those on a Vulcan and I think I heard someone at CIG explaining their idea for exploring a new system is to send out drones to blimp on the cartography map and find clues that can direct the main ship to the point of interest rather then just having it wandering around. Understanding drone information will be the minigame of exploration like it exist for mining or salvaging. That's the main use for all the Carrack antennas: long range communication, being suited for mapping, but lacking the endurance for prolonged surveys and for scientific collecting of samples for Geology or Biology. I would not be surprised if the Odissey will sport a laboratory like on the Reliant Sen, and I'm actually surprised that misc ship isn't fitting into the Odyssey as it would be a magnificent complement.
This was my thinking. Where the Odyssey may not have the drones a Carrack has, using a tough Terrapin into somewhere more volatile (environment or otherwise) would be a great option.
I would argue that the Carrack is more like the Enterprise, being given a mission to map that jumppoint, survey that planet, whatever, while the Odyssey resembles the Voyager, just going places, being out there just for the sake of being out there.
I think it'll have a purpose 😜 If you look at its scanner uniquely being positioned on its bottom, I think this design language screams planetary exploration. I think this one will outperform the Carrack when it comes to planetary exploration.
I actually prefer the Odyssey myself, but that's largely due to not liking what Jones and Co did to the Carrack. I think if they hadn't monkeyed around with the design so much I'd still rather have the Carrack, but as it is I'm probably going with the one I like better. I have a CCU ready to turn my wiener dog into this new big girl just as soon as it's built. Anymore, I don't commit to concepts until I see the in-game product; the MSR taught me that.
I think we will get the Odyssey when we get pyro, I hope we get pyro for CitizenCon 2022. We aldready have mining and refining in the game. So my conclusion is that the features of the Odyssey will be playable and usable before the carracks repair and drone rooms are operational.
10 years m8 And these big ships take 1.5 years to make EACH, and how many big ships do we already have in the build list..... They dont have infinite devs, so ships that make money will be prioritised.
Another consideration when speaking on price is that the Carrack is meant to be modular. I would think that these will also be sold for real money, like the Retaliator and Endeavor extras, and will push that $600 price tag up by quite a bit for anyone wanting to spend real money on swapping out the 3 cargo bays.
I view the Odyssey as more of a home-away-from-home, civilian/corporate mobile base, while the Carrack has always been a mission-focused, militaristic ship to me.

The way this ship looks and it's size makes me extra excited for when the Endeavor gets added! If the carrack got bigger, and the BMM got bigger, that thing is going to be a full station.
Lol. I just listened to an interview with the ships team and the lead guy hates thinking about that ship and everything it's going to take to put it together, especially since it was concepted before current process and item metrics.
Saying that the Carrack is better at “pathfinding” is baseless until we know more about either ship’s sensors. In reality, discovering “new systems” is probably going to be extremely rare, meaning that the Odyssey and Carrack are mostly going to be doing the same job: finding minerals, wrecks, and other points of interest.
I could definitely see CIG doing something along the lines of pathfinding vs. exploration like you described. I would imagine that the Carrack would be suited to find jump points, go through them and maybe do some flybys of the celestial bodies. Afterwards, the Odyssey comes in and actually gives a thorough look at the planets; what kind of resources, habitability, ideal settlement locations, that kind of thing.
Am I the only one that got sold just by the the way how mean and serious this thicc boi looks? I always loved the big bulky ships and had a special place in my heart for the Starfarer. Both of these ships look and feel belivable. Sadly the Starfarer got left behind with game meta with the lack of med beds and small/akward ramp and hangar with a somewhat weak loadout even back then, and now even more. This is the better version of it. I didnt have to think twice before melting some of my ships for this. Never saw the appeal in Carrack, but this one just feels so real and makes so much sense its not even a debate for me.
Can’t wait for the day we’ll be able to basically RP mass effect with these ships. Jumping from system to system, exploring the frontier with a full crew, gathering at the star map to discuss the next move and going on planet-side adventures
I'm so torn so I just bought the Carrack->Odyssey upgrade and won't apply it until I'm more sure of what to do. The Carrack is an amazing ship, I'm just not too sold on how the crew quarters and the mess hall looks, but I do love the ship. The Odyssey is this massive version of the Endeavor Cabin and seems like proper long term exploration ship which is more appealing to me. But that's something I can't know for sure until exploration is in the game and the Odyssey is flyable, so I'm just keeping the upgrade for now to have options :)
Carrack is like a medieval calvary war party scout that patrols ahead to feed intel back to the Generals that's moving an entire army in unknown lands. I know Carrack is an explorer but I still see it as a role in a military fleet. In big battles, intel is king. You get the element of surprise, you get to choose the battlefield, you know what they brought to the party and can plan accordingly.
Youngblood, you deserve like 500x more subs for your consistency and quality over the years! thanks so much for always keeping me updated on every ship.
Concerning the ability to store ground vehicles in the hangar, we can see on the ship map that the hangar is located right next to the cargo area where the ramp is, and we can also see a large door between the cargo bay and the hangar, so i imagine it will be the way for loading ground vehicles inside of the hangar bay (probably small ones like Ursa or maybe ROC).
One thing to bear in mind is that it's so hard to say for sure how valuable the quant-mining is until we get an idea of how easy it would be to just find some ore in foreign, hitherto unexplored systems. Will it be easy? Will it take alot of time to do so? Will you risk just not finding any, in which case you could be stranded while Carrack knows to keeps its fuel for the return journey...?
JP Nav antennas on Aquila and Carrack are very easy to see out or in. Not even a visual hint of these on Odyssey and definitely not mentioned. If it can’t find wormholes, you need Carrack or Aquila along to find them.
FYI, the guy doing the rework on the 600i interior said it's getting "the same medbed as the Carrack." I'm not sure if that's both models or just the explorer version. He also said that the modular parts (that differentiate the explorer and luxury models) have moved to the rear. Iirc, they are currently in the front, upper deck area. At any rate, add the 600i as an explorer with a medbed.
For the first time in ten years this ship almost got me to pledge for it. Looks like an amazing ship! This was a great video helping me decide, thanks for doing it.
My take on the quantanium mining is that unless they drastically change the price of either fuel or the raw quantanium that a single quantanium rock should provide a huge amount of fuel. Refineries have to turn a profit, and if they buy quantanium at the price they do and turn it into a small amount of fuel that they sell dirt cheap then they're just throwing away money. I think its likely the case that you might only need to top up on a rock every once and a while, and leave your refinery chugging along in the background.
I think, this late in the game, no offense, I think those cap components are staying. I think the Polaris cap components are changing. It's been over 6 years. Polaris has changed. They were brazen about showing off those figures and specs, didn't retract them and doesn't appear rushed. Btw, you even said it yourself. Carrack is a "pathfinder" Odyssey is exploration. Odyssey wins.
If the Odyssey can refuel ships inside the hangar, then it may be an anchor ship for a mining operation. With large shields, some turrets, hangar, scanner, and mining arm it could support, defend, and assist a small cadre of Prospectors feeding transports hauling ore.
only problem is we can't do that until we have a bare minimum of at least one more system, although likely more than one, and the associated jump points. Kinda hard to explore in the system that's so known it's been hosting intergalactic expos for like a decade straight lol
@@chomp7927 I meant a mechanic not just visual "been there seen that" norm from games. A mechanic like scanning flora to see if it offers any tangible resource. At one point(2013 forums) they talked about naming things you found. Pretty sure thats a dead idea but outside of mining resource and jump points there is no real reason to explore.
@@sgtbjack yea I think a lot of that boils down to we were sold a lie. Not saying it was 100% intentional but I think it's clear in a lot of ways now that they (mainly CR) over promised a lot based on things they thought they could do and sounded cool and almost 10 years later we're seeing the reality of what they can do vs what they said they could do. That's right up there with the 100 solar systems and a single global shard kind of things, that's just not possible and once we stop holding the game (us and the devs) to this impossible standard we might actually get to see it before we die of old age lol. Now don't take this as purely an attack on the game, I'm $2200 in and growing still, I have hope, but I also realize reality when I see it. I'm sure they'll come up with something unique, they did a fair job with mining so far compared to other games so I think they'll find something but I doubt we've got a promising career on the fringe finding and naming the unknown ahead of us.
what is the biggest ship you can put into the hanger? can it fit the prospector? if so then you can really have it as a mining exploration ship finding.
Where I think the Odyssey really differs in role to the Carrack is that it is a Industrial Explorer. The Carrack finds Jump points and other cool things It is top tier Pathfinding. But The Ody is all about finding valuable ores/resources. I see them working together well, The Carrack moves in first, with the Ody' coming in behind to get details and sets up mining operations. Pioneer could then come in if the find's worth it and sets up a permanent base. Cargo ships start coming in to transport goods. Fighters to escort Nice gameplay loop there that brings in a number of disciplines and styles of gameplay.
What you say is not supported by evidence. CIG never said the Odyssey can't do jump point scanning at all. In fact we know the Aquila can do it too so it isn't as if JP scanning is locked behind the Carrack gate. The carrack may be better at it ok, but again, the Odyssey can keep looking farther. Balance. I think people saying the odyssey is industrial explorer have no clue what they are talking about. CIG called it the most advanced explorer for civilians, not the most advanced mining support ship. There is nothing a Carrack does that an Odyssey cannot do, with the main difference coming just to specs like armor, guns, the carrack's repair bay and drone bay as well as the Carrack having likely a bit more scanning range while the Odyssey seems to have more compute power. And considering there is ZERO details on JP scanning or specs, there is nothing to compare to anyway. In the end this is squarely a carrack competitor and there is unlikely to be anything one does that the other cannot outside of the refuel mechanic which obviously would need a special carrack model TBD to be possible.
@@neonspark707 Okay. 1. Aquila does have specialized Jump point scanners. It loses the S1 missiles for them. As does the Carrack. The fact that jump point scanners are a thing mentioned implies ships will need them to effectively find Jump points. 2. The Ody is made by MISC, an manufacturer that focuses on Industrial starships. It makes sense that they would design a ship for industrial exploration and exploitation as it fits their style. 3.There are things a Carrack cannot do, that a Ody can do and Vice versa, you even list them, defeating the point. 4. Yes, it is a Competitor to the Carrack, but it emphasizes different areas of exploration. Leading me to see them as also complimentary.
@@birdmonster4586 Let's wait for the Q/A because you're basically saying: the Odyssey is flawed and cannot explore, yet CIG clearly says it is the most advanced exploration ship civilians can get. And Given the aquila is a civilian ship, that means you are saying CIG is wrong and the odyssey has even less capabilities than the aquila, a rustbucket with an antenna on the side can do JP scanning but the Odyssey, which has antennas clearly visible in the front cannot. That's just "looks" and "rule of cool" right? There is no such thing as industrial exploration. The odyssey cannot even mine for others. The carrack is a better industrial explorer: more cargo, larger radars, repair stations, drones for local asteroid scanning, and modularity. The odyssey is basically just a ship with extreme range, sold by CIG as a pure exploration ship, not industrial support...but you're saying CIG forgot to put JP scanners on it, so it is basically not allowed to do what the Aquila can and that's entirely an artificial limitation because CIG wanted to make it bad! and give it extreme range just for the lols....okay lol. Well I guess the Q/A will confirm that right? However if it was just a local exploration ship, why then not give it a bigger cargo area, and drones, and modules, and repair stations? If it is such exploration garbage that it cannot scan for JP to go...explore, and if it is just limited to scanning around already explored systems, why need the refinery? Clearly any industrial explorer has a fleet behind it providing it with fuel but with all the industry. you're basically saying CIG designed a ship entirely wrong :) okay.
They are different ships aimed at different types of exploration with some cross over. If you can afford both and both types of exploration appeal to you then buy both, if you can't then choose the one that better fits with the type of exploration you want to do. If you want more information then wait for the Q&A. Nobody has to buy it as it's not coming out for a while (Lol) and eventually it will be available in game. - Normally 3-4 months after it becomes flight ready.
just put one terrapin in its hangar (and it fits for sure) and u have some pathfinder with u, only the repair option is missing. But what ppl tend to forget is that universe will be very large, and u'll have some solar systems without any convenience for ur ship, so being able to self refuelled will be a great advantage, where for the carrack u'll probably need to fill ur cargo modules with fuel (?) anyway, this ship seems to be a beast, landing on an unknown planet and be able to be self sufficient will probably be my bread and butter.
the larger hanger makes up for not having as many guns as the carrack, or as beefy armor as the carrack, so, all good there, but.... if you combine the Carracks range with refueling which will soon be in-game, the Carrack seems much more feature-rich, including being able to carry more supplies, when considering the size of the universe for the foreseeable future. I think you would need to have the ability to travel for a LONG time, in a direction away from refueling options to need to do your own mining for quant. Also, seems contrary for the ship allegedly for exploring at distances farther than the Carrack to have less room for supplies of food/spare parts, etc. Carrack wins, hands down. maybe 23 years from now when the 'verse' is 10,000x it's current size, I'll upgrade to the Odyssey.
Also the Cargo Pods on the Carrack have been mentioned to possibly have modular features to swap out, that could be a refinery or even other things that bring more appeal back to the Carrack. In anycase thanks for the rundown and poatulations, this ship is not for me as I am tied to the Carrack and cannot wait to take it out into the black with all it's features released. Cheers 🍻
True exploration is done on Hydrogen and both ships have scoops so yes Carrack will plot a POI once found but nothing is stopping it from exploring it as well. Yes has to go back for QT fuel now and then but have you seen its fuel tanks and fuel usage?
Agree with all the points. I'd also add that with refueling drones and a supply of quantum fuel stored in one of the pods (or a pod specifically made to hold spare quantum fuel), the Carrack may be able to refuel itself for a VERY VERY long time.
I've been hanging out for a ship focused on mining with some exploration functions able to go on deep-space expeditions looking for super rare ores. This was close but not there.
I think that the unexplored issue in an exploration ship of this size is what if you want to explore a system on the other side of a medium jump point? Everyone is scoffing at the exploration ships smaller than the Carrack but I think they may have the last laugh.
Great video, and a nice point at the end. The Carrack finds the locations, and the Odyssey will be able to stick around and explore it. One thing I would not is that quantanium is very expensive, or at least sells for a lot, while quantum fuel is relatively cheap. So, it might not take a lot of refined quantanium to make enough quantum fuel to fill your tanks, while the rest can be stored. A better question would be...how much raw quantanium can the Odyssey stabilize at any one point so that it can process it into stable quantanium and not explode on you?
again, it is not a mining ship. It has to fill up its tanks, not harvest minerals for later or resell. How much it can stabilize is an irrelevant question: the answer is a tank full of fuel. After that it is done doing its thing and moves on.
the scu is small bc it has a refiner, it can refine a cargo hold full of ore or fuel. that could then be transferred to other ships in the fleet. slower than a starfarer though
I was very torn about my Carrack when I saw this. Mostly by the looks, but the fuel capability too. I do feel the Carrack offers more, but cannot help but feel like I'd have the better ship, albeit one I like less. I guess we will have to see what it ends up like in the Verse as opposed to concept.
Hey Young Blood, great video as always. I was particularly waiting for this one, since I am one of many comparing this ship against the Carrack, and also respect and appreciate a lot your analysis on ships added to the Verse. The Carrack was sold during concept as a deep exploration ship, self sufficient, home ... capable of staying out in deep space for months without coming back to civilization. I remember the Carrack having a fuel scoop in the concept material, from even before almost every ship had their fuel intakes for Hydrogen fuel and before Quantum fuel changed to a mineral source (Quantanium). The Carrack concept information refers to this ship being Self Sufficient, with reinforced large fuel tanks so it can be out for months, along with Solar Panels (no idea how that works now) and Ion Power Generator. Something is missing in the Carrack in order to provide the Self Sufficiency promised during concept, capable of staying in deep space for months. Do you have any insight on what that would be ? The Carrack changed so much from concept, even the verbiage regarding the ship capabilities. I had to go to old screenshots in order to confirm I was not mistaken. Thank you for the great work as always, really appreciate it.
Everyone equips their ships with ml spec A quantum drives (less waiting) but most ships can go for weeks of quantum if equipped with industrial drives… Carrack will have plenty of fuel for weeks if not months of travel if using thouse drives.
@@AtlasRandGaming I don't believe CIG had downgrading quantum drive in mind when they referred to the Carrack being able to stay out in deep space for months, specially since the Carrack is a Military ship made available to civilians, so it would make sense it uses military components. This ship has Reinforced Fuel Tanks (which no one knows exactly what they meant by that) and at certain point in concept had fuel intakes/scoop, before Quantum fuel changed to a mineral source. It still have fuel intake for Hydrogen, but this was before the distinction between hydrogen and quantum, it was only referenced as fuel intake back when ships did not really have Fuel Intakes advertised. Nowadays almost every ship has fuel intakes for Hydrogen, but you will not find it stated on many early concept ships. You can even find concept images with solar panels, suggesting some sort of fuel regeneration. So on that sense I doubt CIG planned for you to downgrade your quantum drive in order to save fuel and stay out for months as advertised.
I wonder what the tractor beam is for. In the current mining mechanic there is literally no use for it. So do we get a rework where it makes sense to have one for specific minerals? Or is it just to drag an asteroid into a place where you can mine it more easily without having to move between mining operator and pilot seat?
Ik I'm really late on this but something you may not have considered in your video is how ships of the same of different manufacturers will interact with each other and I feel like the starfarer may have a bias to misc ships in the final game in terms of ease of use
If you're into Star Trek, get the Carrack. If you're into survival-crafting games, get the Odyssey. The Odyssey has a theoretical infinite range. No single ship has this gimmick.
5:47 re refining ship I just listened to a recent interview with the ships team and they were talking about the Starfarer Gemini finally coming online as a refining and refueling ship. Perhaps that's the rumors you mentioned, unless they will be adding a Gemini competitor, which seems like a kick in the nuts to Gemini OGs who've been waiting a long time for the ship to be functional (and the Starfarer has an interior rework in the...works).
Sounds to me like both ships compliment each other. Get a buddy and go out for very long trips away from civilization with a Carrack and Odyssey working together. The Carrack can do repairs and cartography, while the Odyssey can refuel both ships (assuming ship-to-ship refueling is a thing).
It can’t refuel both ships, only dedicated refueling ships can. But it’s still a good couple the Odyssey + Carrack. Because the Carrack can map and send the Odyssey ahead to explore when it finds something while it goes back to refuel and stock up before warping to the point it mapped and continue exploring with the odyssey
That's my problem with most multicrew ships, even joining organizations doesn't guarantee that you will have enough people to crew such a massive ship.
I personally look at the quantanium mining as a gimmick. The Carrack is modular. That means as soon as they add a refining module to ANY ship its available to the Carrack. That said, do we really think that with all the Greycat mining vehicles they won't have a ground based refinery vehicle? Personally if I get one ill do it in game, I much prefer the Carrack.
I'd really like CIG to go back and make the majority of manned turrets on ships be remote turrets. Especially the ones that have more than one seat on the flight deck. Just think of a Freelancer variant with three S2 turrets because it has four seats in the cockpit! 😆
I think that was the original idea behind the 4 seats in the Freelancer. One seat for the pilot one seat for the back gunner en 2 seats for the remote turrets.
Unfortunately there are no food or drink mineables yet, so the larger cargo hold of the Carrack is just as valuable for long duration flights as the mining of the Odyssey. The Carrack can hold a lot of fuel AND supplies. The Odyssey cand hold as much of either, and has to rely on finding food and fuel as you go. If you can't find quantanium, the miner doesn't help much. There are to many TBDs for me to pull yhe trigger on the Odyssey.
I think you're spot on. Carrack will be better for plotting and pathfinding whereas Odyssey will be better for exploring the areas that the Carrack found
Does it have a machine shop? A retractable sunroof? Darn sweet option mining it's own fuel. I feel the Odyssey and the Carrack were built for subtly different missions. One an aging, retired warship the other a shiny, new civilian model. It's like buying a car, new or used. The Drake Cutter is my Mazda 5, in Spaaaace. Topnotch work STL.
For me the O is not an exploration ship at all, but something like a base of operation. I've been looking for that in the Liberator, the Endeavour and the 890 but the O seems to be perfect for that purpose. I believe the Carrack is still the better explorer in terms of actual discovery, but the O is a perfect mobile base. Which is why I got both. One thought: The quantanium mining makes only sense if there actually is quantanium to mine in every system, evenly distributed. Otherwise you will spend most of your exploration time in the search for it.
One thing I think is being discounted by everyone is the cargo ability. Yes, the Odyssey can mine and refine Quantanium etc. But the Carrack could just buy and store it? Probably use a fair chunk of SCU to store it so it can also refuel mid flight. Also, regarding supplies. We need to eat and drink. Crew needs to eat and drink. While we have a fair estimation on how fast this is consumed, we are looking at probable weeks / months aboard a ship. That will require alot of resources to stay out in the black. Neither ship has the ability to create food as yet. I think they are far more balanced than people realise. Odyssey's lack of cargo offset by it's refinery. The Carrack's smaller hangar offset by the addition of drones. The ONLY thing that strikes me as unbalanced is the sudden addition of a Size 4 Shield... Seems a very strange thing to add on as it imbalances everything else in my view.
Hmm.. CIG themselves labelled the Odyssey as, "The Carrack Killer" in their own video. In fact it was one of the designers who said it. I personally like the Carrack. Its a beautiful vessel and I love running around in it. Never seems to get boring for me, BUT, I am a miner so I think in terms of utility. I was debating purchasing a Carrack and ended up deciding against it because I couldn't even imagine a meaningful use for it aside from cargo and I have an MSR and a C2 so I have Cargo covered. As a cargo hauler I found the Carrack to be just as hard on fuel as the C2 and the C2 has more cargo capacity so C2 wins. As for the Carrack's intended purpose (And if I imagine in future tense), the Carrack a very beautiful gas guzzler with expendable drones and insufficient docking bay. So my intrepid Carrack explorer is going to have to be running home all of the time to refuel and resupply. Kind of misses the point in my mind. And if they rebalance fuel burn in the verse to give the whole refueling aspect of the game more meaning, the Carrack's intended mission will go from having range issues to being in real jeopardy. I did end up buying the Odyssey which meant I did end up with a Carrack after all, at least as a loaner. I make up excuses to use it so I can play in it some more but I still can't find a use for it that I haven't already covered in other ships.
I like when you said that you like the Carrack over the Odyssey...but not by much. And I think that is a success on CIGs part on giving us different ships to diversify our choices where there is no clear winner. We now have two top-end explorer ships that offer us a choice. There is Pros and Cons with both. And that is the way it should be. I don't want to see nothing but Carracks everywhere I look nor do I want the same for the Odyssey...So that is why I have both LOL. Sidenote...One thing to consider too about the Odyssey is that the crew has separate rooms. I think when NPC crews come online this will be a major plus on the longevity of a expedition. The comfort that the Odyssey has is quite nice...though the Carrack has entertainment with the pool table...So again...Pros and Cons :)
With the refining ability this ship seems to closest to Star Trek's '5-year mission' type of thing. Of course without food replicators who knows how much time you'll spend out hunting and gathering. 😆
Excellent comparison. I already have the Endeavor though, so not really sure what this adds other than the mining / refining of ore, and I suppose ground vehicles.
This is a tough one for me. The Endeavor explorer cab probably won't have a tier 2 medbed, meaning you have to take the medical bay module to get the spawn point which takes of 2 of 3 modules spots. The Hanger takes up the last modules spot. This means that the Endeavor is going to be dependent on distances that keep it in range of large scale refueling. And yes, there's more hanger space, but you'd have to take a prospector (or 2 because their mining lasers are smaller than the Odyssey) and a refining ship to maybe replace the odyssey capability, but you still couldn't refuel the endearvor with a small ship. In the end the Endeavor is billed as a science ship, not an explorer. The Odyssey is an explorer.
The biggest thing I did not hear about the Carrack is turret placement and the shear speed of the ship. The Carrack is twice as fast as a jump or hammer head ...fighters cant keep up long term and will have a hard time flanking when the Carrack afterburner speed is 1200 plus. The Odyssey, Im assuming will drive like all Misc ships...AKA my grand dads Buick....Sitting Duck, The Odyssey will need a escort to be honest and can only stay out in the verse as long as the escort if its not able to refuel everyone else
Thinking about the game RIGHT NOW I think it's a no-brainer to upgrade from a Carrack to the Odyssey. Because you still keep your Carrack as a loaner and who knows what price the Odyssey will go up to in the future. It's 'only' going to be another $125 at most.
Then it hits you like a used dildo that CiG more than likely plans on laying the smack down on what the Carrack will do once it's features are all online. I support this project to the fullest and funny enough, own both the Carrack and the Odyssey. I believe many people are falling into the hype trap not realizing the price of the Carrack isn't settled yet. Once modularity comes online and you see what options are available, people are going to be forced into either A, melting their Odyssey or B, buying both. If you don't have the 10 year insurance in buy backs, you'll probably get hit with the new Carrack price tag. This is something many aren't thinking about.
Can I make 2 suggestions? Turn on a noise gate so there is no background sound between words (where I can hear you hitting the keyboard to advance the script) and if you are doing a script read rather than speaking on the spot, do a couple read throughs so you don’t stumble on words. Neither is meant as a jab, I enjoy your content!
The ship matrix says the minimum crew for this thing is 1 person....do you think thats at all realistic, given its size and supreme versatility? things like the DUR and Connie say they need 2 or 3 minimum. is this ship solo-able?
I think the most important thing for me on this is that more exploration ships means that CIG need to properly cater for explorers and non-combat gameplay in the not-too-distant future 😊
In my opinion, earliest will be 2023. I hope that I am wrong.
@@andyandreson3989 In Star Citizen developement terms that counts as not too distant 😅

Against capital grade shields.
thats why you have a scout ship that looks for the quantonium
Or a trippy shaped exploration vessel just… because it is xeno :-D
Mp mm pas là pour vous proposer mes 3 rue des Moulins sur la plage à proximitépp designs de graphique transports plus longtemps le bateau ⛵⛵
Does it compete? Looks like its just better so all the carrack owners need to CCU?
I would argue that the Carrack is more like the Enterprise, being given a mission to map that jumppoint, survey that planet, whatever, while the Odyssey resembles the Voyager, just going places, being out there just for the sake of being out there.
that's actually a really good comparison.

If you look at its scanner uniquely being positioned on its bottom, I think this design language screams planetary exploration. I think this one will outperform the Carrack when it comes to planetary exploration.
@@lystic9392 plus... It has the potential to keep going QT wise whereas the carrack cannot...
I’m sure it will be a great ship for a gameplay loop that won’t exist for another five years.
There is the key.... and by then a new bigger better ship will come along and probably get made before this one.
I think we will get the Odyssey when we get pyro, I hope we get pyro for CitizenCon 2022.
We aldready have mining and refining in the game. So my conclusion is that the features of the Odyssey will be playable and usable before the carracks repair and drone rooms are operational.

I always look forward to your videos when a new ship/vehicle is announced. Thanks for keeping this content coming after all these years.
MAKE THE CARRACK BAY LARGER
I can't wait until 2041 either.
She's a purdy ship, in that MISC kind of way. Very functional thing, and I don't need another ship so I'm going to add it to my "earn in game" list.
The ship gives me Nostromo from alien vibes on the outside.
2:58 Doesn't need elevator? As you can see in the picture, there's a ramp for driving on and off.
JP Nav antennas on Aquila and Carrack are very easy to see out or in. Not even a visual hint of these on Odyssey and definitely not mentioned. If it can’t find wormholes, you need Carrack or Aquila along to find them.
FYI, the guy doing the rework on the 600i interior said it's getting "the same medbed as the Carrack."
I'm not sure if that's both models or just the explorer version.
Have quite a lot of old CCUs laying around, so I could have one for 370 total. Let's see how it compares to the Carrack once it's released :)
I think prices will be adjusted the more gameplay loops are been finished.
Carrack is a "pathfinder"
Odyssey is exploration.
I would like to see one gameplay mechanic to encourage exploration. Than some more ships.
only problem is we can't do that until we have a bare minimum of at least one more system, although likely more than one, and the associated jump points.
Thanks for the update! The Carrack also has additional storage , three areas, bottom center, not utilized yet. Commercials suck.
what is the biggest ship you can put into the hanger? can it fit the prospector? if so then you can really have it as a mining exploration ship finding.
Yes a prospector will fit in the hangar as it's an XS pad
Where I think the Odyssey really differs in role to the Carrack is that it is a Industrial Explorer. The Carrack finds Jump points and other cool things It is top tier Pathfinding. But The Ody is all about finding valuable ores/resources.
I see them working together well, The Carrack moves in first, with the Ody' coming in behind to get details and sets up mining operations.
Pioneer could then come in if the find's worth it and sets up a permanent base.
Cargo ships start coming in to transport goods. Fighters to escort
Nice gameplay loop there that brings in a number of disciplines and styles of gameplay.
New to your channel and am really enjoying your thoughtful insights and deep considerations regarding ships and gameplay.
- Normally 3-4 months after it becomes flight ready.
the Odyssey is larger than the prometheus from the movie if you wanted an example of how large this ship really is
That hanger is what sold me. Cram it full of snub fighters :)
just put one terrapin in its hangar (and it fits for sure) and u have some pathfinder with u, only the repair option is missing.
Cheers 🍻
anything is possible if you say the name 3 times ;)
The question I have is, how long will we have to wait till it's ingame?
0:37 what vehicle is that? Is that the lynx?
I feel the mining and refining might help if you had a couple small ships in your exploration fleet
I'm probably gonna put a Banu Defender in there, has space for things gathered on planet surfaces and has good combat abilities.
5:47 re refining ship
I just listened to a recent interview with the ships team and they were talking about the Starfarer Gemini finally coming online as a refining and refueling ship.
Because the Carrack can map and send the Odyssey ahead to explore when it finds something while it goes back to refuel and stock up before warping to the point it mapped and continue exploring with the odyssey
hopefully exploration gameplay is next which may hint that they are closer and closer to finishing other systems and sq42.
No more money for CIG "finish the game" thats my feeling
Biggest problem: Do you know 5 people who can fly with you every day?
That's my problem with most multicrew ships, even joining organizations doesn't guarantee that you will have enough people to crew such a massive ship.
Eh. NPC crew.
Would it be refining materials and fuel in order to repair and refuel whatever ship its carrying?
Firstly that would be op, secondly cig intends to allow copilots to use the freelancers specialized gimbal mounts as turrets
I think that was the original idea behind the 4 seats in the Freelancer. One seat for the pilot one seat for the back gunner en 2 seats for the remote turrets.
@@egbertthomas3684 precisely, I read the Corsair qna recently and they said they intend for copilots to be able to control any gimballed weapons
I agree with all your points. I've kept my Carrack, but banked a CCU to the Odyssey "just in case".
Good Review. I am with you on the Carrak. She is diffidently my 1st choice.
big think for me in the min crew of the carrack is 4 where the min crew for the odyssey is 1. as a primarily solo player this is huge
I think CIG really messed up this sale. Not enough information or comparisons, lack of clarity on it's intended use case.
Hmmm...if the hangar is high enough we could most likely fit two Reliants within that hull, with wings folded up.
Misc is my favorite manufacturer in the game, their ships all look like Akira Toriyama drew a series of Airstream campers for space
I love the window views of the freelancer and what I’m hoping the odyssey will be. I want to feel like I’m flying an actual ship.
The most advanced exploration ship sold to civilians but with nothing of note to explore.
Does anyone know if a Prospector will fit in the bay?
Isn't the refinery ship you're talking about *_the Orion?_*
Otherwise you will spend most of your exploration time in the search for it.
when can we expect this ship to come out?
Oddysey + Terrapin in the hangar. I think I got my USS Voyager prepped and ready to go.
Did they change the Endeavor to Odyssey? Or is this a different version? It looks almost identical
The comfort that the Odyssey has is quite nice...though the Carrack has entertainment with the pool table...So again...Pros and Cons :)
you still got 400 scu to fill with spare fuel if you want as a carrack right ?
Includes rover and ship ??
So Med Bed, supplies, a mining head and a refinery. Practically is a mobile space station, the only ship you need
The ship matrix says the minimum crew for this thing is 1 person....do you think thats at all realistic, given its size and supreme versatility? things like the DUR and Connie say they need 2 or 3 minimum. is this ship solo-able?
So then the endeavor is going to be a class up than this?
I think this ship actually gives the terrapin some purpose
That’s what I thought too, it can cover it weaknesses (with scanning for example) by bringing specialized ships (like the terrapin)
any new info on Squadron 42? like a release date? I'm not a hardcore fan but djeez, wasn't it supposed to come out 4 years ago or something?
got mine for $65, some store credit, and a creative CCU chain.
