    I really love all the theory-crafting with the Odyssey vs. the Carrack. One thing I think people are underestimating is, with the Odyssey being such a large ship, it's not going to be automatically easy to find and mine quantanium. Quantanium can be time-consuming to locate, and especially locate it where there's enough room to maneuver an Odyssey around to mine with it. Don't get me wrong, I adore mining, and the Odyssey really has some potential upside, but I've done enough mining runs to know that "once in a while" even the best miner can accidentally blow up a rock. Heavy damage from a mining accident in deep space... now that's an epic storyline :)

      yeah, except we should expect better scanners for quantanium on that odyssey. it's not a tiny mole or even smaller prospector.

      @@niklasdahlgren7641 It will be helpful for sure! But it does take time to launch a ship, locate the stuff, move the Odyssey over to get it, and mine it. There is also no guarantee the refining is "instant" with the quantanium that was mined. There could be a "wait state" while it makes the fuel. It's all theory, and fun to talk about! All that "time" theoretically the Carrack could be going for fuel. How "deep" will space get in SC... its a fun mystery - :)

    1. I think at least for exploration, the drones on the Carrack won’t give it much of an advantage because drones as well need some kind of fuel to fly and explore, most likely they have a limited range as well but I could see it have niche uses like sending in drones in a cave.
    2. As you pointed out, the Carrack is more of a pathfinder, it cannot go and explore unknown space alone in the same way the Odyssey can. If a new system is found, the Odyssey would probably go explore that system while the Carrack goes back to refuel.
    3. With the larger hangar the Odyssey can cover some of its weaknesses with specialized support ships like a dedicated scanning vessel or repair ship. The Carrack might be able to do something similar with the exchangeable modules but we don’t know yet what that might entail.
    In the end, I think both are amazing ships for different purposes, I would give the overall “exploring” edge to the Odyssey because it can actually go out and explore independently without returning essentially as long as it has food. However, what I really love and am excited for is to have a Carrack and Odyssey exploring together. When the Carrack finds something it can map it, send the Odyssey to check it while it goes and gets fuel and supplies before returning to continue exploring with the Odyssey.

  • @Leptospirosi

    Another thing about the Odyssey compared to the Carrack is that it can house dedicated exploration ships and sustain them long term: this is the ship that can make a Terrapin shine or make a 315p able do it's real job, which is pathfinding, but don't have the range to get where they can be employed. This is less specialized but offers more flexibility for in deep exploration of unknown system where there are no infrastructures to rely on. I think the drones on the Carrack are different then those on a Vulcan and I think I heard someone at CIG explaining their idea for exploring a new system is to send out drones to blimp on the cartography map and find clues that can direct the main ship to the point of interest rather then just having it wandering around. Understanding drone information will be the minigame of exploration like it exist for mining or salvaging.
    That's the main use for all the Carrack antennas: long range communication, being suited for mapping, but lacking the endurance for prolonged surveys and for scientific collecting of samples for Geology or Biology.
    I would not be surprised if the Odissey will sport a laboratory like on the Reliant Sen, and I'm actually surprised that misc ship isn't fitting into the Odyssey as it would be a magnificent complement.

    Saying that the Carrack is better at “pathfinding” is baseless until we know more about either ship’s sensors. In reality, discovering “new systems” is probably going to be extremely rare, meaning that the Odyssey and Carrack are mostly going to be doing the same job: finding minerals, wrecks, and other points of interest.

    I could definitely see CIG doing something along the lines of pathfinding vs. exploration like you described. I would imagine that the Carrack would be suited to find jump points, go through them and maybe do some flybys of the celestial bodies. Afterwards, the Odyssey comes in and actually gives a thorough look at the planets; what kind of resources, habitability, ideal settlement locations, that kind of thing.

    My take on the quantanium mining is that unless they drastically change the price of either fuel or the raw quantanium that a single quantanium rock should provide a huge amount of fuel. Refineries have to turn a profit, and if they buy quantanium at the price they do and turn it into a small amount of fuel that they sell dirt cheap then they're just throwing away money. I think its likely the case that you might only need to top up on a rock every once and a while, and leave your refinery chugging along in the background.

    I see them working together well, The Carrack moves in first, with the Ody' coming in behind to get details and sets up mining operations.

      What you say is not supported by evidence. CIG never said the Odyssey can't do jump point scanning at all. In fact we know the Aquila can do it too so it isn't as if JP scanning is locked behind the Carrack gate. The carrack may be better at it ok, but again, the Odyssey can keep looking farther. Balance. I think people saying the odyssey is industrial explorer have no clue what they are talking about. CIG called it the most advanced explorer for civilians, not the most advanced mining support ship. There is nothing a Carrack does that an Odyssey cannot do, with the main difference coming just to specs like armor, guns, the carrack's repair bay and drone bay as well as the Carrack having likely a bit more scanning range while the Odyssey seems to have more compute power. And considering there is ZERO details on JP scanning or specs, there is nothing to compare to anyway. In the end this is squarely a carrack competitor and there is unlikely to be anything one does that the other cannot outside of the refuel mechanic which obviously would need a special carrack model TBD to be possible.

      2. The Ody is made by MISC, an manufacturer that focuses on Industrial starships. It makes sense that they would design a ship for industrial exploration and exploitation as it fits their style.

      @@birdmonster4586 Let's wait for the Q/A because you're basically saying: the Odyssey is flawed and cannot explore, yet CIG clearly says it is the most advanced exploration ship civilians can get. And Given the aquila is a civilian ship, that means you are saying CIG is wrong and the odyssey has even less capabilities than the aquila, a rustbucket with an antenna on the side can do JP scanning but the Odyssey, which has antennas clearly visible in the front cannot. That's just "looks" and "rule of cool" right?
      There is no such thing as industrial exploration. The odyssey cannot even mine for others. The carrack is a better industrial explorer: more cargo, larger radars, repair stations, drones for local asteroid scanning, and modularity.
      The odyssey is basically just a ship with extreme range, sold by CIG as a pure exploration ship, not industrial support...but you're saying CIG forgot to put JP scanners on it, so it is basically not allowed to do what the Aquila can and that's entirely an artificial limitation because CIG wanted to make it bad! and give it extreme range just for the lols....okay lol. Well I guess the Q/A will confirm that right?
      However if it was just a local exploration ship, why then not give it a bigger cargo area, and drones, and modules, and repair stations? If it is such exploration garbage that it cannot scan for JP to go...explore, and if it is just limited to scanning around already explored systems, why need the refinery? Clearly any industrial explorer has a fleet behind it providing it with fuel but with all the industry.

    just put one terrapin in its hangar (and it fits for sure) and u have some pathfinder with u, only the repair option is missing. But what ppl tend to forget is that universe will be very large, and u'll have some solar systems without any convenience for ur ship, so being able to self refuelled will be a great advantage, where for the carrack u'll probably need to fill ur cargo modules with fuel (?) anyway, this ship seems to be a beast, landing on an unknown planet and be able to be self sufficient will probably be my bread and butter.

  • @WorthTalking2

    the larger hanger makes up for not having as many guns as the carrack, or as beefy armor as the carrack, so, all good there, but.... if you combine the Carracks range with refueling which will soon be in-game, the Carrack seems much more feature-rich, including being able to carry more supplies, when considering the size of the universe for the foreseeable future. I think you would need to have the ability to travel for a LONG time, in a direction away from refueling options to need to do your own mining for quant. Also, seems contrary for the ship allegedly for exploring at distances farther than the Carrack to have less room for supplies of food/spare parts, etc. Carrack wins, hands down. maybe 23 years from now when the 'verse' is 10,000x it's current size, I'll upgrade to the Odyssey.

    Also the Cargo Pods on the Carrack have been mentioned to possibly have modular features to swap out, that could be a refinery or even other things that bring more appeal back to the Carrack. In anycase thanks for the rundown and poatulations, this ship is not for me as I am tied to the Carrack and cannot wait to take it out into the black with all it's features released.

    Great video, and a nice point at the end. The Carrack finds the locations, and the Odyssey will be able to stick around and explore it. One thing I would not is that quantanium is very expensive, or at least sells for a lot, while quantum fuel is relatively cheap. So, it might not take a lot of refined quantanium to make enough quantum fuel to fill your tanks, while the rest can be stored. A better question would be...how much raw quantanium can the Odyssey stabilize at any one point so that it can process it into stable quantanium and not explode on you?

    • @neonspark707
      @neonspark707 3 роки тому

      again, it is not a mining ship. It has to fill up its tanks, not harvest minerals for later or resell. How much it can stabilize is an irrelevant question: the answer is a tank full of fuel. After that it is done doing its thing and moves on.

    Hey Young Blood, great video as always. I was particularly waiting for this one, since I am one of many comparing this ship against the Carrack, and also respect and appreciate a lot your analysis on ships added to the Verse. The Carrack was sold during concept as a deep exploration ship, self sufficient, home ... capable of staying out in deep space for months without coming back to civilization. I remember the Carrack having a fuel scoop in the concept material, from even before almost every ship had their fuel intakes for Hydrogen fuel and before Quantum fuel changed to a mineral source (Quantanium). The Carrack concept information refers to this ship being Self Sufficient, with reinforced large fuel tanks so it can be out for months, along with Solar Panels (no idea how that works now) and Ion Power Generator. Something is missing in the Carrack in order to provide the Self Sufficiency promised during concept, capable of staying in deep space for months. Do you have any insight on what that would be ? The Carrack changed so much from concept, even the verbiage regarding the ship capabilities. I had to go to old screenshots in order to confirm I was not mistaken. Thank you for the great work as always, really appreciate it.

      Everyone equips their ships with ml spec A quantum drives (less waiting) but most ships can go for weeks of quantum if equipped with industrial drives… Carrack will have plenty of fuel for weeks if not months of travel if using thouse drives.

    • @fheral
      @fheral 3 роки тому +2

      @@AtlasRandGaming I don't believe CIG had downgrading quantum drive in mind when they referred to the Carrack being able to stay out in deep space for months, specially since the Carrack is a Military ship made available to civilians, so it would make sense it uses military components. This ship has Reinforced Fuel Tanks (which no one knows exactly what they meant by that) and at certain point in concept had fuel intakes/scoop, before Quantum fuel changed to a mineral source. It still have fuel intake for Hydrogen, but this was before the distinction between hydrogen and quantum, it was only referenced as fuel intake back when ships did not really have Fuel Intakes advertised. Nowadays almost every ship has fuel intakes for Hydrogen, but you will not find it stated on many early concept ships. You can even find concept images with solar panels, suggesting some sort of fuel regeneration. So on that sense I doubt CIG planned for you to downgrade your quantum drive in order to save fuel and stay out for months as advertised.

I've been looking for that in the Liberator, the Endeavour and the 890 but the O seems to be perfect for that purpose. I believe the Carrack is still the better explorer in terms of actual discovery, but the O is a perfect mobile base. Which is why I got both.
    One thought: The quantanium mining makes only sense if there actually is quantanium to mine in every system, evenly distributed. Otherwise you will spend most of your exploration time in the search for it.

  • @Solais76
    @Solais76 3 роки тому

    One thing I think is being discounted by everyone is the cargo ability. Yes, the Odyssey can mine and refine Quantanium etc. But the Carrack could just buy and store it? Probably use a fair chunk of SCU to store it so it can also refuel mid flight.
    Also, regarding supplies. We need to eat and drink. Crew needs to eat and drink. While we have a fair estimation on how fast this is consumed, we are looking at probable weeks / months aboard a ship. That will require alot of resources to stay out in the black. Neither ship has the ability to create food as yet.
    I think they are far more balanced than people realise. Odyssey's lack of cargo offset by it's refinery. The Carrack's smaller hangar offset by the addition of drones.
    The ONLY thing that strikes me as unbalanced is the sudden addition of a Size 4 Shield... Seems a very strange thing to add on as it imbalances everything else in my view.

    Hmm.. CIG themselves labelled the Odyssey as, "The Carrack Killer" in their own video. In fact it was one of the designers who said it. I personally like the Carrack. Its a beautiful vessel and I love running around in it. Never seems to get boring for me, BUT, I am a miner so I think in terms of utility. I was debating purchasing a Carrack and ended up deciding against it because I couldn't even imagine a meaningful use for it aside from cargo and I have an MSR and a C2 so I have Cargo covered. As a cargo hauler I found the Carrack to be just as hard on fuel as the C2 and the C2 has more cargo capacity so C2 wins.
    As for the Carrack's intended purpose (And if I imagine in future tense), the Carrack a very beautiful gas guzzler with expendable drones and insufficient docking bay. So my intrepid Carrack explorer is going to have to be running home all of the time to refuel and resupply. Kind of misses the point in my mind. And if they rebalance fuel burn in the verse to give the whole refueling aspect of the game more meaning, the Carrack's intended mission will go from having range issues to being in real jeopardy.
    I did end up buying the Odyssey which meant I did end up with a Carrack after all, at least as a loaner. I make up excuses to use it so I can play in it some more but I still can't find a use for it that I haven't already covered in other ships.

  • @brewskyman25

    I like when you said that you like the Carrack over the Odyssey...but not by much. And I think that is a success on CIGs part on giving us different ships to diversify our choices where there is no clear winner. We now have two top-end explorer ships that offer us a choice. There is Pros and Cons with both. And that is the way it should be. I don't want to see nothing but Carracks everywhere I look nor do I want the same for the Odyssey...So that is why I have both LOL.
    Sidenote...One thing to consider too about the Odyssey is that the crew has separate rooms. I think when NPC crews come online this will be a major plus on the longevity of a expedition. The comfort that the Odyssey has is quite nice...though the Carrack has entertainment with the pool table...So again...Pros and Cons :)

      This is a tough one for me. The Endeavor explorer cab probably won't have a tier 2 medbed, meaning you have to take the medical bay module to get the spawn point which takes of 2 of 3 modules spots. The Hanger takes up the last modules spot. This means that the Endeavor is going to be dependent on distances that keep it in range of large scale refueling. And yes, there's more hanger space, but you'd have to take a prospector (or 2 because their mining lasers are smaller than the Odyssey) and a refining ship to maybe replace the odyssey capability, but you still couldn't refuel the endearvor with a small ship. In the end the Endeavor is billed as a science ship, not an explorer. The Odyssey is an explorer.

I support this project to the fullest and funny enough, own both the Carrack and the Odyssey. I believe many people are falling into the hype trap not realizing the price of the Carrack isn't settled yet. Once modularity comes online and you see what options are available, people are going to be forced into either A, melting their Odyssey or B, buying both. If you don't have the 10 year insurance in buy backs, you'll probably get hit with the new Carrack price tag. This is something many aren't thinking about.
