      @@tmonk. It's because selling ships is the business model.
      It's by far the number 1 source of income. It's kind of a trap : cashflow and cashflow forecast of the company are available online, they are consistently low on cashflow, thus creating a loop in which they need more ships to sell, dedicating most ressources into what makes money.
      I do not think it's a scam, I think it's a terrible management, which is likely incredibly difficult to handle in the first place given the business model. My thoughts is that Chris Roberts got lost into it, possibly micromanaging too much, and after 10 years ( well over 10 years for him, he raised his first millions with a pre version of the game ) he likely needs someone who has a higher view of things, and put boundaries to this project, before it collapses on itself.
      With all due respect to Chris Roberts who has built a company that has achieved technical breakthroughs in an industry so boring and barely innovating, I do believe that more cold logic of a producer approach, and less creativity all over the place, is the only thing that can bring the game into a final form. Or, let's call it what it is : a project never meant to be achieved, like a huge prototype, and not expect or entertain expectations, of something else.

    the interior of the engine room is too dark, as a mechanic, I'd want it to be brightly lit to carry out work, just like the engine room of a ship, same goes for repair room with the workbench. The captains quarters needs two lounge chairs for whisky drinking and some chairs opposite the captains desk, and theres also plenty or room for a double bed.

    • @ltmuffler3482
      @ltmuffler3482 4 роки тому +153

      Most of the lighting they do is "mood lights" and not useful "work lights". I hope they give us the ability later to switch between those schemes.

      the WHOLE SHIP is too dark inside.

    • @gajustempus
      @gajustempus 4 роки тому +8

      @RAYfighter tricky question - but as of now I don't see ANY ship fulfilling the role of a true "explorer" vessel. The CLOSEST color-wise and equipmet wise would be maybe the Cutlass Red or the 600i Exploration. But the first one's too much into military again, the latter too expensive for being in the "luxury"-segment.
      The constellation COULD be such a ship - with a bit of modification and if you'd replace the fighter with an actual shuttle/small transport craft, but that'd take quite some rework...

    • @ltmuffler3482
      @ltmuffler3482 4 роки тому +33

      @RAYfighter You say that, but if repair gameplay requires as much micromanaging as mining does, and potentially requires being able to clearly see the component, you're gonna rethink your opinion. I'm training to be an aircraft mechanic, and while I enjoy mood lighting a LOT, I do NOT enjoy dark hangars. Having a well lit work area not only improves your ability to do the job correctly, but it is also significantly more calming. The more lit up, the more comfortable you are working in that space. Neon lights are also a big fat no no in the work place. Neon does not give acceptable work lighting. I can get behind work station specific toggle-able lighting, but not neon. There is a point where "mood" stops being cool because it actively clashes with practicality. Then, it becomes "frustrating" and "annoying".

    Having served in the US Navy I have a unique take on the manning of the vessel. The best manning for the vessel would be a minimum crew of 20. Captain, Executive Officer, Chief Engineer and 3 engineers, Weapons Officer and 4 Gunners, Communications Officer, Navigator and Quartermaster, 4 Pilots, and the Chief Medical Officer and Corpsman. A cook could be added to the crew for long deployments and times "at sea." The general quarters stations would have the CO, XO, and NAV at the round table on the upper command deck flanked by the COMMO, and WEPS in the chairs with MFD's. Pilot 3 would be at the upper control with Pilots 1 and 2 being on the lower command deck with direct control of maneuvering and the fixed mounted weapons. In the 3rd seat on the lower command deck would be the Quartermaster to provide direct aid to Pilot 1. Pilot 4 would be a standby or a fighter pilot if the ship was carrying a fighter. The gunners would be in their turrets, Doc and the Corpsman in the Infirmary, and CHENG and their engineers in the engine rooms and other component areas. Other crewmembers like a Loadmaster and company and Cook +1 could be added depending on the length of time deployed and missions being carried out.

    You’re right about Stellar Cartography needing seats. Instantly thought of the briefing scene in Star Wars. The walls should have simple bench seating so the captain can brief the crew while they sit around the room on benches. The first mate or navigator can give a briefing on the system, it’s locations, op details etc.

      military would give near zero fucks about comfort tho.
      in that vein it would not be the hang out room players envision.
      but as a player yea i would have couches in there, in my ready room, a couch or two in the game/pool room. look like there 2 walls you could toss a couch on or some game/arcade area.
      only other thing i dislike is the subdeck turret area beyond being a waste of space is how much it looks to a tee like the tech deck and can confuse you. color or lighting in that area would need to change, but i in make that bottom turret remote kill that elevator, redo that entire space to dunno a airlock for rear access, a parts room (ships got so much stuff crammed into as it is,) i suspect part of the reason that made that turret manned was to make use of that space vs add whatever to fill it out.
      but that space and seating or lack of it in some spaces and the seating thing really sould have been there, not even the military would make everyone stand in the captains room or the pool room all the bloody time. wtf.
      just seems a dumb oversight to drop a chair or two in the captains room across his desk leave enough to stand in front though. and a single couch on the wall in that pool room.

    An aerospace engineer review of an architect review :). A lot of the things said I agree with, mainly the open elevators, the engineering deck, the empty cartography deck and it's overall completeness. A few things I want to add.
    The rear elevator should go all the way down via a Connie style elevator/airlock combi. It makes no sense to depressurize an entire garage each time you go out. Also if you suit up in the armory, you have to hope the cargo pods are attached so you only have to walk over one complete deck to get to the exit. Making the rear elevator a second exit point would make a lot of sense.
    The round engines completely makes sense as an engineer, as a round shape helps a lot with things like even stress and heat distribution.
    Something I expected you as an architect to mention are the bars in front of the windows of the drone bay. They look out of place compared to the rest of the ship.
    Something you didnt mention as well is the escape pod placement. Each working station has quick access to their own escape pods, except for the poor engineers.
    All in all another great video, thanks.

      I think it's obvious that if there is a fire going on in the vehicle bay you are trapped aboard the ship in atmosphere. That's not good.
      Also how does the first guy get on board to turn on the power? If ever the hydraulics fail and you can't open that front hatch you have an oversized paperweight.
      Personally I've seen enough elevators in this game and I would like an access ladder that drops down somewhere and maybe a shielded ramp for deployments from the armory.

  • @voxframe2259

    Something I feel is missing from this ship is a dedicated science lab/area. The med bay is amazing, but because this is an exploration class ship, it should have a dedicated science area. Perhaps a section of the cartography deck, or areas near the med bay. I also find the workshop and drone bay too dark. I've never seen a functional workshop without good bright lighting to work on items. I feel a couch would work in the captains quarters, as well as variable lighting in the habitation deck. I find it's still a little on the dark side. There should be an option to brighten it up similar to the med bay, and then tone it down at night etc. (We, the people, demand light switches! lol)

    • @voxframe2259
      @voxframe2259 4 роки тому +9

      Now see if they are thinking of making replacement modules for the cargo pods, I could totally jump onboard with that. I would love to see science/research/bio pods in the cargo bays. Makes me think back to Nelix's garden? lol. The one thing, and sadly it's purely esthetics, is more lighting control. Heck we have that now where most good light bulbs can change colors and brightness with a phone... I'm sure in this timeline we would be advanced enough where every light source can be controlled completely, but at the very least have a couple lighting modes. The current ship lighting is always very cinematic, but not exactly useful. The Carrack after a short while would start to feel very dark and depressing, not calming. The windows are surprisingly small, so the chances of bright clear light entering the cabin is very slim on a long journey. The ship feels like it's constantly in a "battle-ready" mode, which is typical of an ex-military ship according to lore, but even military ships in our age are very well lit for functionality... It's only in the movies where they are lit like they belong on a Batman set.

    A pleasant walk through, and I generally agree. There are some points that aren't addressed, as follows:
    1. The ramp's inflexibility of position makes it difficult to know if you have a problem with onloading before it's too late.
    2. The airlock to the Med Bay is fine--you mention its utility in aiding with bring on an infected crewmember or dangerous sample, but you have to haul it through a good portion of the ship to get there!
    3. The number of useless and futile indicators, monitors, unusable storage spaces, and other geegaws that serve no function other than to remind the viewer of the complexities and nuances that are missing.
    4. The distance between the racks and the heads shows no consideration for wakeup priorities. Because when I wake up, the first thing I do is shower. Oh. Wait. No. It's that other thing.
    5. What, the Captain gets a twin rack? How inconsiderate to the people that might visit the Captain's quarters! At least a double.
    6. On Deck 3, the use of red lighting instinctively signals that something is wrong, or that the ship is in silent running/combat stations. I don't know if that's a good idea.
    7. The decision to make both entries to the hangar on the same side--and that being the side most distant from the bridge--is a design flaw. A single hatch on the fore and aft bulkheads would be superior for better access.
    8. A Bitchin' Seat for the Captain on the Command Deck would be nice.

      So, typically when you are dealing with someone who is sick from a possible (unknown) contagion, they will be triaged and then placed inside an isolation unit on a stretcher and then moved to the established treatment area as to not expose others (because as you said, otherwise it'd be a mess!). The airlock/decon area is really more for medical staff to ''scrub" themselves before entering an area where there could be people with already compromised immune systems. Morph, I gotta say, I fell in love with your channel twice now. You told us you decked out a SoroSuub back in the day. That right there, wins me over because you know how significant being able to wave to someone from another ship, while they are outside their ship, and being able to both see each other waving is significant.
    All of these videos give me hope for customisation, especially considering that the Carrack is only just the beginning. They still have the Endevour to learn from the Carrack. I remember how different the 600i to the 890 Jump was, and with each ship, they seem to have more and more of a grasp on their style guides to the point of being able to utilise functionality introduced with one ship to flesh out the next ship of the type.
    You mention these exact design improvements in this video as well. Overall, I don't find myself getting lost on the Carrack as much as I do on other ships, despite there being far less signage overall. It seems to just have an intuitive navigation setup.
    Also I think the Carrack might be the best example of how physically built out these ships are with the engines actually being there, and connected fully with the exhaust on the exterior.

The bridge has posts for the captain, pilot, 2 copilots, 2 systems technicians. 2 drone operators in the drone bay. 1 medical officer (assuming there's no assistant, nurse, medical technicians). 3 total turret gunners. What about crew for engineering, the hangar and the garage, cartography room, etc? There is a lot of space on this ship, but people forget that this crewed ship has actual posts for 12+ crew members and would likely have had more when it was deployed by the UEE prior to being offered for civilian use.

    I'll never own an Anvil Carrack, cuz it's too big for me to own. I like smaller, more "personal" ships. But I'd love to be a part of its crew - Carrack's interior is the best so far in the game.
    But still I have a few problems with it:
    1. Was mentioned in this video - secondary elevator is not isolated, so if 1 deck gets depressurized, the 2 other will also. IMO, it is unacceptable for an ex-military ship to have such a MAJOR flaw.
    2. Also mentioned in this video - no way to get to 4th deck if elevator dies. Smaller, but still a major flaw - top deck, from what I understand, is suppose to be ship's "senses system". All scanner data is gathered, filtered and relayed by it to relative posts in the rest of the ship. So it need to be accessible at all times.
    3. Medical bay, IMHO, should be either facing elevator OR, even better, have access from both sides. One of the side walks around it may even be sacrificed to make the med-bay bigger.
    4. Main elevator does not extend outside the ship and can't be used to enter/exit the ship. I think it's a big issue, because if any of cargo pods get dropped or damaged, crew will be forced to use front vehicle bay to enter/exit. If they don't want to walk on, completely open to space/atmosphere, catwalks outside the ship, of course. And they'll need to use 2 elevators to get there from armory! Big oof. BUT, not having a direct access to armory from outside the ship is understandable for an ex-military ship. They could re-do it during the conversion into civilian ship, but that's more work, so ok, understandable.
    5. These damn removable screens in captain's quarters. I'm convinced that it's another left-over from ship's military past. They look hella durable, but so tiny and "cheap". Yack
    But even with all these problems, IMO, this ship is much more believable, much more comfortable to work in than any other, even "luxury ships" (oh. man, I have so many problems with them).

      You mean the smaller elevator? its isolated by at least 3 doors in every direction.
      First that elevator has it's own door. (1)
      The airlock has its main door, secondary door, and EVA equipment room door separating it. (3)
      The garage is separated by the main ramp door and the garage door. (2)
      Each door to the cargo modules is a double door, basically a miniature airlock. (2 - 6)
      The jefferies tube has the main garage ramp, secondary garage door, and a door per floor. (3)
      The main elevator is super secure, it has 3 mini airlocks between it and the secondary elevator,
      meaning it has 8 doors between it and the garage exit, and 9 between it and the Airlock.
      And it has 3 between it and the upper floor airlock exits.

    Carrack has been my favourite ship since the first time I laid eyes on it, and a dream ship of mine ever since. I'd never seen the concept art for it, which I must admit looks quite interesting, and I think could be adapted for a NEW Anvil explorer type ship, that's a little smaller and sleeker - the Idris or Polaris to the Carrack's Javelin. Overall it seems incredibly well designed, and the space is a nice in-between of brutalist space efficiency like in navy ships of today, and a liveable space that an exploration team can call home. I gotta agree with everything you said here Morph, particularly on how the bridge seems to have been designed with greater length in mind (potentially allowing a larger side-view as well), and the lack of separation of areas that could become depressurized, but I'd like to add one major point - there are not NEARLY enough bunks in this ship right now! I'll speak firstly from a realistic standpoint, leaning on experience with navy ships' crew sizes, specifically offshore patrol vessels (OPVs).
    Judging by the size of the ship itself, the size of the bridge, the likely necessity in a ship this size of having an ever-present engineer (meaning two on board), the drone stations, cartography area, med bay, AND the presence of a bay for the C8 Pisces (surprised not to see that shown off here...) this ship should support a crew of 12 to even 16! A captain of course, as well as at least one officer/first mate to perform duties while the captain is asleep, as well as commanding a ground team using the two vehicles plus perhaps coordinating the C8 as well (perhaps piloting it and acting as a forward-observer). A pilot and two navigators, plus the two remaining crew stations in the bridge which would likely serve as comms/systems operator roles (only one of which really requires being filled at all times). Add in at least one medical officer if not two to take shifts, and we're already up to nine, without even factoring in the two drone operators and two engineers, likely a dedicated cartographer/scientist (I'm thinking Professor Anders from the UNSC Spirit of Fire), and with all these people on board you might even need a dedicated cook. That's fifteen, almost three times what the ship currently allows for, and that would make the decks feel a lot more alive, while I feel like with six personnel only, you might go a substantial period of time not even seeing your fellow crew on such a large ship.
    For comparison, the 80m long, 1,640 tonne Arafura Class OPV has a crew of 40, but can accommodate up to 60 if necessary!
    Now, because this is a game, we can knock off a few of those points of course - dedicated comms/systems operators won't be necessary, neither will a dedicated medical officer or researcher/scientist/cartographer. That’s realistic stuff we just don’t have to worry about (though I would argue that immersion should govern ship design more than gameplay requirement) One engineer would be fine, as would one navigator, both of which can double as drone operators or vehicle pilots. Take out the cook, and we're down to seven people necessary just to even fill all the ship's roles, and even then we're disregarding the idea of shifts, and whether or not you want to retain full capability while the two ground vehicles and C8 are out on deployment (those turrets need manning, and can the drones also serve a light combat role??). Overall I'd hope to see fourteen to eighteen bunks PLUS a captain's and officer's quarters on a ship of this size, especially when even the Freelancer has four for god's sake!! (Side note: Why tf does the Freelancer need four crew stations/bunks..??)

    Along with the changes you've already mentioned I'd prefer it if they made the main elevator go all the way to ground level so that you don't always have to use the ramp as an entrance when landed. Making the ventral turret remote controlled like the dorsal turret could also save space while making the other crew station on the upper bridge more useful.
    A control panel to operate the hanger from inside it would be great too so you don't have to ventilate most of the tech deck if you dont have someone to operate the main panel for the shuttle crew.

    o7 Cmdrs.... I really like each and every clip of your vid-art‘s :) I started in SC 2016 and I quit the same day when I could not enter even my ship. Since that time I flow with my fleet CMDRs from Elite Dangerous and I finally gave SC another chance to show me the improvements... am really happy that I made the step! So many changes happened to the game since 2016 and I couldn’t hold my self and purchased last weekend another 2 ships , Andromeda and Freelancer Max and I did some small missions till now. And I have to say... this Game Rocks! Still lot of bug issues but you’re able to find yourself in the verse with its bright spectrum of gaming variables and I luv it! Thank you so much for introducing each and every aspect of the game to us! You’re the reason why I came back after 4 years of waiting.... thx 😊

    One thing I just realized after watching the tour was that the Carrack would make for a pretty good fleet support ship or even the staple ship for smaller groups.
    -It has lots of cargo capacity for foodstuffs, maintenance supplies, or munitions (in theory) letting this ship act as a supply vessel/collier.
    -It has a luxurious med-bay for its size considering you'd either have to buy a dedicated ship like the Cutlass Red or have to buy an extremely expensive capital ship to get a comparable setup (Idris/Kraken) taking care of that issue (however they model that into SC).
    -It has an internal hangar bay allowing for the maintenance/repair of fighters within the formation.
    -It has a rather large and well equipped stellar cartography room that I'm sure could be used to plan and direct fleet movements in or between systems (as well the holo-display on the bridge could be used for tactical planning for the commander in combat).
    -It has a good defensive armament with 4 turrets placed with good fields of fire around the ship granting good pd capabilities within a formation.
    -Lastly, It has an armory and a rover bay which can be used to carry a respectable amount of weaponry and a vehicle that could be combat-centric? to help attacking or raiding enemy ground side bases/outposts among other uses.
    I might have missed a thing or two but I hope you understand what I'm getting at.

    First of all, great review. This is the first video I watched from you and I really like all the points you discussed, specially regarding the decompression on multiple decks through the common lift. I have some points I would like to bring up, just to check if my expectations are reasonable.
    Ramp as sole entry point when landed: The Carrack is an ex-military vessel, so security should be at top priority. Only having the ramp as a single access point make it easy for other people to sneak in, specially how slow and big the ramp is. Examples of ships that are not luxury and includes this feature are the Constellation and Freelancer series. As an alternative, I imagine the main elevator from this ship that crosses all the decks could be reworked to extend down to the surface, like in the Constellation series.
    About the Sterilization area in the med bay: I think is great, however to get there you need to come from the ramp (Single access point), go up to the habitation deck using the opened and exposed lift and then go through the sterilization room on the med bay. I am not sure if there is a way to circumvent this without major changes, but if we are concerned about an infection, then parts of the ship already got exposed before we had the chance to sterilize.
    Crew Quarters: IMO the pool table (Recreation Area) is taking a lot of space. The pool table could be removed and replaced with other types of activities that requires less space, like Arcade machines and board games. The bunk beds looks good, but I don't believe they should be in the Carrack. This vessel is for long term exploration, so IMO some of the space claimed from the recreation area could be used here, in order to give the crew small private quarters. A place that belongs to them, their personal room during long journeys.
    Jeffrey’s Tube: I was not able to access every deck. I could only go from the Sub Deck all the way up to the Technical Deck, skipping the Habitation Deck in the process.
    Thanks, appreciate the great work.

  • @RoadRunner217
    @RoadRunner217 4 роки тому +6

    Amazing video!
    The Carrack looks like an obese TIE fighter, and there's a lot of wasted space inside. I hope that CIG will some day learn, that we don't need half of the ship for walking spaces. One could easily add 2 rooms per deck or make the existing rooms more comfortable or bigger by just trimming down the gigantic hallways, which sometimes even fork into two frikkin hallways. These ships are bigger than the medium ships, but they are still not huge and don't justify throwing valuable space out the window. Space in space, especially on exploration vessels, is worth gold.

    • @Ravage2734b
      @Ravage2734b 4 роки тому +1

      you obviously have never watched or listened to the devs explain how you must have large spaces to walk PAST other VIDEO game models, as they don't turn sideways, and they can't "squeeze" by someone.

    • @RoadRunner217
      @RoadRunner217 4 роки тому +1

      @@Ravage2734b That's not a solution though, that's a workaround. A very, very lazy workaround.
      If the next generation of cars came out and they all had 6 wheels instead of 4, with the substantiation that "well, the 2 in the middle just seem to break radomly for some reason, we dunno" you wouldn't be like "oh well yeah, makes sense" and accept it, people would ask questions and demand to find out what the heck is wrong with the two damn wheels in the middle.
      One easy and simple solution would be to dissable most of the collision of the hitboxes of party members, or characters in general, on ships. How are people supposed to walk past one another on smaller ships? Open the doors and then play tetris?
      I hope that you see the bigger picture here.

    • @flashbackflip
      @flashbackflip 4 роки тому +1

      @@Exsulator2 CIG actually explained why halls are large - that's because they need two (at least) physicallised models (of ppl) to pass each other and don't get stuck. And this task has its own constraints as we (ppl) navigate differently, watching from our head/VR and watching things on monitor. In the second case we somehow need more space to be able to pass each other (some weird cognitive feature)

    • @Exsulator2
      @Exsulator2 4 роки тому

      @@flashbackflip I mean, they're making tech for everything. In many cases, spacecrafts would be tighter and simply going a bit sideways would dramatically reduce the need for large hallways, unless you're transporting really big things of course. Anyway like I said, how hard would it be to make the tech to be able to move past each other... it would be very usefull in crowds as well. I think Assassains Creed has something like that iirc.
      For me it's kind of immersion breaking, with ships like the hammerhead essentially being one long loop of corridors, it doesn't feel like a logical craft for me, personally.
      What's worse is that CIG puts components so close together that maintenance essentially becomes very easy - IRL that's handy, in a game that's just less diversity. A game like SoT has you running all over, patching canon ball holes, the moving about makes it more interesting. But in a carrack you just put someone in the engine room, and yeah... they can just sorta hang out indefinetly during combat. Gameplay could be more exciting... but that's another discussion, I suppose.

As soon as they release the Campaign a lot of content will be unlocked for the PU. Its just a question of when. And that is the part most are afraid of.
      Onto the budged: I agree that different AAA games had a lower budged. But those AAA Titles were on a much smaller scale. SC is trying something noone has before and I give them a lot of respect for it.
      They improved the game a lot over the past year. The technology for their Object Container Streaming hasn't been done in any game as far as i know and if so not on SC scale. It takes time. Big publishers only announce Games late in Production, not at the start.
