    That is why I love this series so much. It does not offer a pretentious monologue of one character, but always shows character interaction with smart dialogue. Ideas are presented from all kinds of viewpoints, and while Yang is teaching Julian, he also counters Yangs ideologies in a smart manner. That truly seperates LOGH from most shows and makes the dialogue so enjoyable.

    As a history student, this is why I've always loved LOGH. It has so many aspects, from its presentation, thematic references and characters (especially Yang!) that mark the show as a true loveletter to the study of history. I'm not sure whether this was reflective of the original book's author or the anime's director, but whoever made this show what it was truly loved history as well. Ive never seen anyhing like it!

    A pretty accurate explanation of why humanity advances at such a rapid rate. Our growth and knowledge is multiplicative, not simply additive. People use records of past studies, events, and theories to advance various fields instead of just trying to make their own.

    Though Yang Wenli never answered that question (about historians not having anything to study if it wasn't for those who change it) I've been thinking about it for a while. Now, I think I found a solution. We can change history peacefully and for the best. Scientists, artists, workers... all of them were changing the world we live in for centuries. Without them there would be no improvement. That's why I still don't understand why Julian wanted to be a soldier that much.

    • @Borderose
      @Borderose 8 років тому +80

      Because it's the soldiers who make sure those talented people are protected from those who might wish to do them ill. Our capacity for violence is just as much an important part of who were are as a species as our ability to create. People these days like to idealize the workers and artists, and seem to regard soldiers as well as war and aggression as being naturally negative. But that's not true. Our aggression is a major part of our success as a species: when we had to compete against other animals--we killed them. There were other hominids before us, some who might have been smarter but more inclined to gentleness that we either out-plucked or utterly wiped out and beat in the survival game. When we had to go against other people who are just as suspicious of us as we are with them: we fought to make sure any perceived threats are neutralized and to increase our own tribe's power and wealth. Our penchant for war and violence was useful.
      The soldier exists in order to make sure the other soldier from the other tribe doesn't end up killing his own tribe's doctor, artist, and his workers. Some may take this as further evidence of the soldier's negative role. Until people realize this: we're all different. People think in different ways and value different things. This also means they can hate different things and can want certain things other people value destroyed. There WILL come a time when someone tries to hurt those we want to protect and so it becomes necessary to smoke them out and rid ourselves of them. Some people were born for peace, while others were born for war. We're a mixed bag of nuts. And that's the way it's always going to be. In order to protect ourselves from the kind of nuts that may want to hurt us--we needed to learn to lie, fight, and brutalize. That's the reason the human species came to value dark traits. If our darker attributes were purely bad, we would have bred them out of ourselves years ago. But they're still in us. Instead of breeding it out, we cultivated them and saw them as desirable. Aggression and violence kept us alive then, and the time may come in the ever-turning future that we may need it again.

    • @dianasofia5075
      @dianasofia5075 8 років тому +13

      First of all, I'm not sure about your country, but in mine most people spend a lot of time praising our soldiers (which is quite understandable since we're currently in a state of war) and they forget about others who also live through struggles and help society. I know it's only natural for people to fight, but why do we do it, when there's no need for it? Why does slightest difference in ideology or whatever drives people crazy? I was always different from others. And, of course, it was tough for me. But as I was growing up I've learned to accept others and so did they. In our life we look back at the past and learn from our mistakes. Maybe the whole humanity can do the same. But, never mind, maybe I'm just too naive.

    • @Borderose
      @Borderose 8 років тому +46

      Diana Sofia
      No, you're not naive. I like it when people think the way you do. Even though I myself have lost all hope of mankind ever rising above themselves as a whole--individuals, of course, but all of us? No. (At least in my lifetime) There's always going to be a significant number of stupid people in any time period: stupid, petty, dull, shallow people who share more in common with the beasts than the angels. Trouble is...we can't tell who those people are exactly. The beast rests within us all. And what's more, the beast can actually be useful to us given the right circumstances.
      We fight each other sometimes because sometimes things are truly worth fighting for. As you said, people are different. We value different things: things we're willing to die for. But, just the same, we also hate different things: things we're willing to kill for. When values clash; blood spills. Eliminating your opposition is also the quickest and most straightforward way of changing the world to one's design provided one wants to change it enough. The reason we pounce on each other for every bit of difference is because we're creatures that like consistency and harmony. We absolutely hate deviation and unpredictability; we fear the unknown, and so we are naturally suspicious of those we see as "different". We define ourselves not by who or what we are, but who or what we are _not_. We were also wired to seek victory more than truth or justice, which is why every form of conflict, from wars to debates, can often turn ugly. Losing feels incredibly unpleasant. And to avoid it we'd rather cheat, and lie, and at times maybe even kill our opponents (or at least feel like it) rather than admit they might have a point that could make us question our worldviews.
      That said, despite it all, I still love mankind. In my own twisted way, I've even come to actually _like_ our species' ability to do horrible things to each other. It reminds me that for all our advancements and our lofty dreams for ourselves, and as much as some of us would like to deny it...some part of us will always remain animal.

      The ruler should be gold, the guardians silver, and the worker bronze in Plato's idealized society.
      People as nations as they did cities in Plato's time will always want more or will expand in number so that they may need more.
      Sayem
      That is why republicanism is the greatest form of government
      a king to watch the people, an oligarchy to watch the king, and a proportional representative to watch the oligarchy, or without the metaphor, president/minister/consul, senate/parliament, house of reps/tribunes of plebs
      each one watching eachother insures that the rest are less likely to be corrupted so you neither have a king turn dictator, a senate turn oligarchy, or democracy turn anarchy.

    ペンは剣より強し、これはヤンにしては珍しく真理を語っていないと思う。剣の強さとペンの強さは比べられない。実際ペン(例えば工作活動)に軍隊が敗北する例だってあるし、軍隊が蹂躙する例だってある。その際、その時代の抑圧される人民にとって、将来の人間が自分たちが抑圧されたことを知っているからなんだと言うだろうか。
    ペンの強さというものは確かにある。だけどペンは圧倒的軍事力にかなうことはない。けれど軍事力も万能ではなく、いくら抑圧してもそれこそペンの力でその怨念が蓄えられ、いつか爆発するときが来る。
    正確に言えば、ペンも剣もともに強し、然れどもペンをして剣に勝たしむこと常ならねど、剣をしてペンに勝たしむことも常ならぬ。というところだと思う。

      ヤンはペン押し。ヤンも完璧でなく、少しエゴがあって、人間らしい。
      ユリアンは才能は少ないけど、均整は取れている。だから、余計に可愛がられる。ヤンは、ペンと剣との激しい比較に直接関わる立場にいる。ユリアンにとって、剣とペンを競う命題は、実はピンと来ていない。多くの概念のそれぞれ一つとして、ペンも剣も存在すると思っていて、どっちも重要だと思っている。戦争の時代と、平和の時代の境。
      因みに私は、"pen"を重要な強化系アイテムだと思っていました。私はクレイジーではないです。取り敢えず帰ります。

      Unfortunately, he is. He's also talking about countless other suppressions of revolutions throughout history (1848, 1956, etc).
      The double-edged sword of history is that autocrats can learn dark lessons as well. The CPC has famously subjected its upper leadership to seminar after seminar on the end of the Soviet Union to hopefully avoid its demise.
      With any luck, however, they will overreact in the opposite direction and ultimately undo themselves in a novel way they did not foresee. Nothing lasts forever.

    I see 90s version and the Die nue These and just am amazed at the wondrous difference in voice acting. While the 90s very is good in its own right, I prefer the new one. I feel like the 90s voice acting was rushed and frankly unnatural. I have read the Light Novels and my word for this can be taken with sufficient credibility that Yang was the most laidback person in the entire series. I personally don't think he wouldn't explain to his adoptive child about history this way. He would add more pauses, have a more enthusiastic tone (for Yang loves to talk about history), speak with more compassion. He was like that one closer weeb who never got to talk about hus favourite anime but then simebody outright walked up to hum and asked him about the very same anime! Voice acting has evolved so much. The newer version incorporates all those things. Die Nue These mughtnot use the visuals like the 90s ova but because the explanation is a bit more relaxed, and frankly more human, I enjoy Die nue These more.
