  • Hi! It’s Shae. In this video, I am telling you how to choose your loc size and how I chose my loc size.
    **I have been loc’d for 3 ½ years now and this is my 3rd loc journey. I have thick, semi-free form locs this time around. In my first two loc journeys, my locs were thinner. I had over 100. Now, I have 46 locs.

    I am the opposite of you. I had larger locs for over 9 years and wanted a change. So I got microlocs. So far so good. The only negative is the retightening time. Larger locs are a lot less maintenance.

    Wish I went larger because as they mature finding I have to keep combining because my hair is so fine and not super dense. I had 60 something and now have 56 if I count the twins as one. I have about 4 more that feel a little too thin, but aren’t really positioned in a way that makes sense to combine. I hope they’ll be ok. I don’t want to have to restart, I’m only 2 years in. If I wait at least a few years and find I need to, I’ll at least have some more info from this set, which I’ll factor into choosing the size of my next set.

    I decided to get locs a long time ago in the early 2000s and Res and Lauryn hair looks is what I wanted. I never thought about size too much but I got medium locs done and was happy with them.
    Over the years I always wished I got them thicker but I knew I didn't want to cut my locs off and start again so I just dealt with it... Fast forward into the pandemic.. I started to mess with my already long locs but making it longer but my stylist said all the extra weight started to thin me out on top.. 👀 I told her to cut some of where I added the extentions..
    Getting nervous I ended up cutting more to a shoulder length Bob. Then I decided I want thicker locs to reverse any possible thinning so I two strand twisted my locs and loved how it looked..
    Eventually I ended up using a crochet needle to combine them and I stopped over twisting my locs.
    So far now..in a years time my locs are growing nicely, thicker and longer. I'm happy with my with new refresh look on my locs.. Tho the fuzziness took me a while to get use to. Lol now I don't care I just tie it down with a nice scarf and go about my business.

      I heard that! LOL. Yes, the fuzziness doesn’t bother me that much either.

    I cut m’y locs about 5 months ago and I’m missing it so bad I want to go back. I don’t have time for this natural hair styling, combing etc. Now I’m in a dilemma on the size to do next. I still have my old locs and thinking of just attaching it. And in the other hand I want to go a little smaller (not sister locs) but I’m thinking what do I do with my old locs then?
    Can anyone help 😊

      If you want to go a little smaller, there may no use for your old locs sadly. Do what’s best and easiest for you. ❤️

    I wish I had chosen larger locs. I have 60+ locs. Have you ever lost any of the smaller locs on the streets of Southern Cali (from excessive retwists)? Go big or go home!

    What size locs would you recommend for 4a hair????

    • @ShaeLaird
      @ShaeLaird  11 місяців тому +4

      Thicker I am thinking. I’m not a loctitian though. I do have a friend who has 4A hair and she has a thin set of locks (pencil size) and she’s trying to go thicker now. She’s in the process of combining them.

    How long did it take your hair to lock each time

    • @ShaeLaird
      @ShaeLaird  3 місяці тому +4

      My hair is kinky so it locked in about 4 - 6 months.

      Maybe 1/2 a centimeter. I don’t think I have ever gotten this question before. ☺️
