Alex Haggar , so essentially just Mayer doing Mayer! 👍🏻 He gets compared to others so much, but really he has taken the best parts of those other artists and used it to create his own unique, recognizable sound.
This performance is a GOLDMINE for someone aspiring to be a soloist on guitar. His technique of mixing minor and major scales is nothing short of brilliant. Not to mention the licks, phrasing, and tone. Pretty damn special. SRV and Hendrix would be proud.
I was actually thinking this is a goldmine to learn how to overplay the hell out of a song. And ALSO how to cop Hendrix licks that mix minor and major scales. Mayer's a great guitarist, but let's not pretend he came up with any of these licks.
John was in the zone....big time...check out his guitar phrasing after the solo when he sings...dude is still soloing lines as he sings ....not easy to do and make sound that fluid and natural
@@Sixto_Marley haha that I have not been able to do. I know how to do it but it is so quick and precise and for me the solo is a bit fast paced so i just keep it in the bb box and get a similar sound.
learn coudnt stand the weather including the solo parts an that will help get you at the same tempo. If i didnt play alot of srv stuff I probably wouldnt have been able to transcribe this as quickly as i did
adam levine did purple rain, whats interesting and what id like to know is which one of these went first because i'd be willing to bet john went first because adams solo seemed a little force and way over the top .
@@dylanbyrne01 Adam is extremely talented but John is next level. The music pours out of him. This performance is on the same level as when The Blues Travellers performed for Howard.
love Jm and i have listened to this soo many times, and its only because of this i have noticed a mistake at 2:54 and im so happy as a guitarist.. first time ever caught jm with even a slight wrong note.. hes human!!
I’ve seen his performances before and he’s one of my all time favorite artists and guitarists but this gives me a new found respect for him. this performance is killer!
i love it when JM lets it rip. sometimes his playing is almost TOO tasty and refined. this is pretty bad ass tone and phrasing and attack, reminiscent of his Trio work.
I've been debating with myself whether I should get a stratocaster or a les paul. This convinced me to go for the strat. He really makes that thing sing..
I practice, and practice, and practice and see I’m making progress until I see John Mayer and understand I’m too old to learn even how to hold my guitar correctly 😢

Ed Bauer he and Kieth Urban are amazing at that
Look at that finger tap at the beginning of the solo oh my god
Playing from straight feel….. no thought at that point
Greatest guitarist this century
His rhythm playing here is unbelievable
Bro it's NEXT LEVEL. Those little riffs he's throwing in between the lyrics are sick!
His lead runs are smokin as well!!
@@9AJW4 lol Hendrix did these licks decades ago
Yeh Hendrix was a great guitar player.
AxcivW almost the same level as Hendrix at Monterrey. Johns licks here between the chords are incredible
He is basically soloing through the whole song. Unbelievable.
Those note must have been running through his veins
Thanks to the Fender Strat. Great pairing.
hendrix baby
This performance is very impressive
The harmonic squeal at 4:16 is some of the slickest shit I’ve ever seen.
I come back to this every so often and everytime it hits just as hard
it's amazing he hit that in the middle of all that finger traffic. freak'n slick.
I hadn't noticed!! INSANE!!
Beautiful mistakes, kids.
@@uglytuco3829 For you that is.
Wtf that solo! Mayer just never disappoints. Never. He makes sounds come out of that strat that I didn’t even know were possible
Respect to the opening riffs. I picture Jimmy at Montreux when I keep replaying it over and over. Wonderful.
He’s still soloing while singing 🤯
Dam he's good at what he does, that intro was killer.
He's the master of rythym and solo in one.
Great cover, wonderful solo (3.50) Thanks Maestro!!
After all these years he just keeps getting better. He is incomparable.
Alas, in this very moment, I have learned every note that he is playing here. That took me one full year lol.
bro your videos are mad funny

4:22 classic mayer hyperspeed pickup switch
4:16 that’s by far the sickest lick I have ever heard holy shii
That pinch harmonic he throws in is crazy
Im watching this every day to remind myself that John is only human after all.....2:52
Hahaha this might be your only proof tho
that's why he took a revenge (he was the zone)
And then you get to 3:58 and you realize that he is not!
One in ear monitor out so he can feel the groove. Absolutely in the zone.
I've watched this so many times. Love every time how much you can tell Howard just loves it.
That’s how I wanna play
How can music get any better than that ? Amazing
He’s nailed it. The spirit and import of an iconic era
This had to have been THE performance of the night
This was amazing, but I have to give it to Steven Tyler’s Dream On.
adam levine did purple rain, whats interesting and what id like to know is which one of these went first because i'd be willing to bet john went first because adams solo seemed a little force and way over the top .
People seem to react more to Adam Levine’s cover of Purple Rain which is crazy to me coz this is much better

Imagine John Mayer performing like that at your birthday party. Howard is the fucking king!!
I can imagine Stevie and Jimi looking at this and just being like "Fuck yeah"
So no one is going to mention that godly tap at 3:58?
It’s so nonchalant
Good eye! That was insane, I’d have never caught that
WOW thank you for pointing that out... it's just too easy for him
Sick...totally improvised as well...
Also that electrifying harmony/mute of 4:18 - 4:19!!! (I'm not him btw XD)

Mayer making that strat look like a 3/4 size while I'm here making strats look and sound like a shovel
This made me laugh so hard!!!😂

He also does a pretty credible Jerry Garcia :)

The complete package!

What a player
Dudes a master. Simple as that.
One of the best all time performances. For? A 50's kid who listened to all of his Aunt's Dylan records on a small phonographs in the mid-60's.
Can we talk about the pickup change @ 4:23?
Outstanding, respect, every time.
