Playing with intention is incredibly important for a musician, he was being sincere, he also read that it was a good bit and let it be. There’s nothing worse to me than a technically virtuoso musician that plays without intent (you could switch intent for soul depending on genre)
"I always felt sad for beautiful women because they don't get to be with me" is one of Conan's all-time best lines. It encapsulates both sides of his outrageous arrogance and self-deprecation in a single sentence.
How do you get that impression? I get the vibe that he loves himself a little too much lol. He thinks the SNL people didn’t like him because he’s the “tall musician” bruh what
I really recommend listening to more of his interviews, especially post 2010. That was when he began to grow up and now he’s one of the smartest and most well adjusted celebrities around. Also, I think he has a real way with words and is among the most articulate people I’ve ever listened to.
Finally! Such a fun episode, just wish it was longer. John’s always been one of my favorite musicians and he’s so funny in his own right that this episode makes perfect sense. He really meshes well with Conan.
I LOVE the show, but I HATED this episode. He and John spent like 30 minutes talking about John's weird SNL story. I didn't chuckle for the first 30 minutes
What a great episode. Love them both. John is a great conversationalist. I understand John when he said he stopped caring or worrying about what others thought when he got older. When I turned 40 I didn’t care about things I used to worry about as well. I wish I had this comfort in my 20s and 30s
What a great guest he was, I didn't know John was so funny or such a deep and interesting thinker. They way John and Conan bounced off each other was fantastic and improvising a song about getting run over by a train was hilarious.
Yes, John is great conversationalist. Can talk about anything. I loved him on when he was on Hot Ones. That’s worth checking out if you enjoyed him on this podcast
6:35 "I get sad". This bit is brilliant. It's also what many men including me see when they see John Mayer. I get sad. And then I see interviews like this and listen to a couple of songs and feel good again. But the "I feel sad" part is probably what drives some people to stalk celebrities (and in extreme cases try to kill them).
Taylor and John dated and weren’t good for each other. It happens, and hopefully your niece can learn that people can still be good people but wrong together.
Watched John Mayer open for Glen Phillips (he said you would be great) in Winooski VT and this is such a glorious interview that exposes the beauty of you. 🙏
He seems so much friendlier and cooler than i thought he was. I don't know why but i don't think I've ever seen an interview with John Maywr prior to this.
I think sometimes he seemed like a bit of a jerk before in his younger days, but I think getting older has mellowed him out a bit and he does seem friendlier.
He's a funny guy. I used to watch him on random VH1 shows about 80s/90s pop culture and he was hilarious. It was like 10 comedians and him. He was always the funniest one.
John Mayer is a guitar god. Clearly one of the greatest ever. Only a few people technically are better, like Gutherie Govan, but I don’t think anyone has it all like John does. Melody, feel, technically perfect.
@@HenritheHorse - Not even close? LMAO. He's one of the best in the world, by far. Clapton calls him a master and invites him to his Crossroads benefits. ua-cam.com/video/tzfrXiD1_Rg/v-deo.html
@luke5100 You're not missing anything, dude. Music is 100% subjective and ranking artists like they're athletes is a pointless endeavor. Arguing over which one is the "best" or who is "better" than the other is equally pointless. John Mayer is an extremely skilled guitarist, solid singer, and great songwriter. ...but trying to rank him somewhere on some subjective top ten "GOAT" list is just stupid. ..and yeah, as far as blues goes, I agree with you. I grew up in Memphis in a family of blues guitarists and I've always found his blues playing to be pretty derivative. It's very well executed technically, but that only goes so far. Music should have originality. My little brother could play Stevie Ray Vaughan licks flawlessly at 13 years old. ...which is impressive, but he still just sounded like Stevie. ...which is why he kept pushing himself to become his own person with his own style. John absolutely has his own style in general, but when he plays blues in particular, a lot of that goes away. He's just channeling other players. He's got a great song called "Who Did You Think I Was". ..but if I'm honest, I mostly like it because it sounds like SRV and Jimi. Lol
This appearance feels way too long overdue! I've been seeing John Mayer liking Team Coco's posts on Insta for so long for him not to be on the podcast. And the last time he's on Conan's show seems to be way back in the NBC days.
This is one of those episodes where I thought: okay, I'll play it while walking the dog. But Mayer's fun presence and that pointed, important question that got a great pointed, important answer out of Conan, regarding SNL's sketch thunderdome--so so good! New fan, JM!
We really need these videos in full somewhere. I don't even care where, but I'm utterly and completely uninterested in audio only, and I'm well aware that I'm not the only one.
Mayer has been one of the best guests to grace the show. Articulate, thoughtful and a wonderful conversationalist. He's much more "down to earth" than you'd expect from such a well-known person.
Does anyone else think that there's something in John's mannerisms that makes him bear a striking resemblance to Flula? And then every time he does his kind of animated way of moving, I expect him to be telling a Flula-like joke... but he's just being completely sincere... and it's like an uncanny valley thing.
Hello Team Coco, you seriously need to give us the clip on ‘The Ballad of Limpy’. I know it’s not nice but could you somehow add stuff front and back and upload it please?? It was the funniest moment, almost all, of John Mayer’s pursuit of comedy. Thanks.
I had a love-hate relationship with John Mayer. I always thought that he was a good musician but kind of a douche as a person but this episode somewhat changed my perception. He was pretty witty and actually very down to earth. I don’t know him personally of course but this episode made him more human and approachable as he showed his vulnerable side (when he talked about how he felt less with some SNL people, and how he longed to be attractive to some of the women in Hollywood). Deep inside each of us (at least those without psychopathy or sociopathy) has the same insecurity and longing to be accepted and admired.
“You play with great intention” is the PERFECT musical burn!! 🤣🤣
nicest, kindest, most PC musical burn
Right I have to remember this 😂 applicable to other fields as well 👍🤣
He def meant to be sincere tho hahah
Playing with intention is incredibly important for a musician, he was being sincere, he also read that it was a good bit and let it be. There’s nothing worse to me than a technically virtuoso musician that plays without intent (you could switch intent for soul depending on genre)
“You play with great alacrity”
"I always felt sad for beautiful women because they don't get to be with me" is one of Conan's all-time best lines. It encapsulates both sides of his outrageous arrogance and self-deprecation in a single sentence.
But it also feels like a jab at his wife? Oof. 😬
Outrageous faux arrogance*
@@woopygomanare you new to comedy in general, or just Conan?
I am definitely stealing that one
@woopygoman
No. He said "Because i'm taken" right after.
I don't think I've ever listened to John Mayer speak for this long, he seems like a really down to earth and intelligent dude!
How do you get that impression? I get the vibe that he loves himself a little too much lol. He thinks the SNL people didn’t like him because he’s the “tall musician” bruh what
I think he’s putting on a show
@jooohanWell said👍
His time with the Dead has changed him
I really recommend listening to more of his interviews, especially post 2010. That was when he began to grow up and now he’s one of the smartest and most well adjusted celebrities around.
Also, I think he has a real way with words and is among the most articulate people I’ve ever listened to.
Whatever you think of him personally you can't deny what a great musician this guy is.
And Mayer’s not bad either!
stop holding on to past comments and mistakes. people change.
He is amazing
This was long overdue! Loved listening to the whole thing on Spotify. Please post more clips here too!
“Spam skinned skeleton” is a vibe! 😂😂😂That one took me out!
Same, what in the hell was that? I lost it a little bit.
I really hope John comes back many times. This whole podcast was engaging and fun from start to finish.
I’m not even Salieri looking at Mozart…I’m a chamber pot looking at Salieri looking at Mozart. Lmao
I am so livid that there's only one clip of this up! Lol !
Post the whole podcast asap!
There’s 4 clips my guy
What a great episode. Love them both. John is a great conversationalist. I understand John when he said he stopped caring or worrying about what others thought when he got older. When I turned 40 I didn’t care about things I used to worry about as well. I wish I had this comfort in my 20s and 30s
He feels like a genuine fan of Conan...
0:00 I thought he was gonna say “my name is John Mayer, and I’m ready to be a star!”😂😂
His cover of California Dreamin’ in the Tonight Show era is still one of the best performances if not the best I’ve seen on Conan🤌🔥
Absolutely. Conan is so pumped after the song ends, too.
This is my new favorite episode! I love John Mayer! His new show is amazing as well.
Back during COVID he did a weekly Instagram live show where he just talked about whatever and it was so much fun to watch.
"I'm John Mayer, and I'm ready to be a star"
The "New Light" video is hilarious!
😂😂
I saved this episode and will play it whenever I need a laugh good to make it through the day. You guys are the best!
We’ve been WAITING for this collab!
I REALLY didn't see it coming, but this is for sure in the top five funniest episodes ever.
Just finished this episode and I never knew John was this down to earth and funny. This was so great. Top 5 at least!
You can tell John still struggles with narcissism but is trying hard to keep it in check. Good on him for it.
That Mayer was this whitty, deep and analytical. Amazing chemistry and riffs. Loved this episode!
Already one of my fav episodes.
Since I was a child, John Mayer looks the same, barely changed. He is aging really good
My 23yo Swiftie niece absolutely REFUSES to hear how great Mayer is. I dont know if that's common, but I admire both Taylor and John.
Tell her to chill out 😂
Funny, I like them both too. They also have mutual friends. It’s not that crazy! 😉
Taylor and John dated and weren’t good for each other. It happens, and hopefully your niece can learn that people can still be good people but wrong together.
Tell her that Travis Kelce wore a John Mayer t-shirt on his own podcast.
When the John Mayer Trio performed "California Dreamin'" on Conan's show, it was INCREDIBLE! Find it if you haven't seen it.
I have been waiting for these two heroes of mine to collide for so long
Why don't you guys post the full video of the podcasts?
Watched John Mayer open for Glen Phillips (he said you would be great) in Winooski VT and this is such a glorious interview that exposes the beauty of you. 🙏
Oh man I've been looking forward to this!
Actual genius on the show this time. Mayer isn't too bad either.
This is the 3rd song that canan has recommended and I liked. Is there any playlist of Conan's music recommendations
He seems so much friendlier and cooler than i thought he was. I don't know why but i don't think I've ever seen an interview with John Maywr prior to this.
He was great on Hot Ones as well. Very good interview.
I think sometimes he seemed like a bit of a jerk before in his younger days, but I think getting older has mellowed him out a bit and he does seem friendlier.
One bad Playboy interview created this perception
Him and Alexa chung is pretty good.
He's a funny guy. I used to watch him on random VH1 shows about 80s/90s pop culture and he was hilarious. It was like 10 comedians and him. He was always the funniest one.
John Mayer was the first musical artist I was ever obsessed with!
John Mayer is a guitar god. Clearly one of the greatest ever. Only a few people technically are better, like Gutherie Govan, but I don’t think anyone has it all like John does. Melody, feel, technically perfect.
Also (and people often dismiss this fact) his ability to actually write a great pop hit. That type of musician barely comes around.
C'mon, he is good, but not even close to the best ones.
@luke5100 - Rick Beato compared him to Joe Bonamassa here. ua-cam.com/video/2kgQvcVzcVU/v-deo.html

absolutely loved this episode!!!
Omg finally John Mayer is on here
Man, can’t wait for this, Conan and Mayer.
Wow, didn't see this one coming!
I like how people start out imitating or using someone else’s recipe and then gradually you find your own way to mix the flavors
this is nostalgic because I remember picking up a guitar for the first time shortly after watching JM play on LNWCO back in 1998
1:34 John was being genuine
Honestly the only ad reads that I don't want to skip.
This appearance feels way too long overdue! I've been seeing John Mayer liking Team Coco's posts on Insta for so long for him not to be on the podcast. And the last time he's on Conan's show seems to be way back in the NBC days.
Two of my favourite talents having a conversation, nice!
This was surprisingly sweet
John Mayer is the best. Everyone should beg for his interviews
Loved his run with Dead & Co.
This is one of those episodes where I thought: okay, I'll play it while walking the dog. But Mayer's fun presence and that pointed, important question that got a great pointed, important answer out of Conan, regarding SNL's sketch thunderdome--so so good! New fan, JM!
Just the other week I was thinking: is John ever gonna make it onto my favorite podcast.
3:24 Out of all the numbers he could have used he just had to get that '33' in there... IYKYK
I really loved and appreciated this dialogue.
How does someone come up with "spam-skinned skeleton"? 😆 🙌
I don’t really know John.. but This has been the happiest and funniest episode /conversation 😊😂 I enjoyed it very much
A DREAM HAS COME TRUE OMG
Conan is THE GOAT
Is there any way to 'watch' the full podcast? I don't want to just listen
Sona’s “that’s it” @3:48 is such bullshit even the guy in the background laughs his ass off! 🤣😂🤣
just for the record - maybe the best Miller Lite commercial of all time
I don't know who i love more, John or Conan ❤❤
We really need these videos in full somewhere. I don't even care where, but I'm utterly and completely uninterested in audio only, and I'm well aware that I'm not the only one.
Mayer has been one of the best guests to grace the show. Articulate, thoughtful and a wonderful conversationalist.
He's much more "down to earth" than you'd expect from such a well-known person.
yoooo. i love everyone in this podcast
Another episode where Sonya gets a TON of money to laugh like a laugh track and say “ya” to Conan. Luckiest most fireable person in show biz.
This episode really reminded me how funny John Mayer is. He's got great chemistry with Conan.
Does anyone else think that there's something in John's mannerisms that makes him bear a striking resemblance to Flula? And then every time he does his kind of animated way of moving, I expect him to be telling a Flula-like joke... but he's just being completely sincere... and it's like an uncanny valley thing.
Conan is the best par none.
I could see Conan being THE orgasmic beauty of podcasts.
One of the greatest musicians ever and one of the most arrogant ever. But I love him.
how is he arrogant
It was hilarious at the end.😂😂😂😂
I suppose the Conan podcast studio is almost as good as a Japanese cat bar.
no way! john mayerr!!!
I completely agree! It comes from getting a little bit older.
So awesome 👌
John Mayer is like Flula's chill American cousin.
Came for the 'Miller Lite' ad, stayed for the John Mayer interview.
More please

This was a really great episode, it was more renewing than any real interaction I’ve had in years. How insane is that? #donttalkaboutbruno

Ad break in a clip?
You play with love 🙃😉😊😂
I was so pleasantly surprised to see John's name in my podcast feed today! Such a fun episode.
This is a great conversation but c'mon...there's nothing better than when Conan makes Sona bust out laughing.
She laughs like she's in pulmonary arrest. The sound engineer should turn her microphone off.
Sona laughing is greatness
@lisavizza1648 you are spewing hate on lots of threads about Sona....try not watching if it bothers you that much
@@rasdamo gee - thanks for the advice. I don't listen/watch anymore.
"spam skeleton" 😂

“Spam-skinned skeleton” 😅💀
The day has arrived
Only 2 people in that room seriously contributed to that conversation and were actually famous and interesting.
Not me, trying to zoom in on Gourley’s notes to see what he’s writing down. 😂😂😂
Spam skined skeleton is crazy
Immediately Matt writes on his notes writes..."John Mayer"
Anytime I see a John Meyer interview I wait for his new big word he says that he only uses on this interview my new big word t o use
i can now die in peace thank you
Ay!! John Mayer!
This is my dream, John Mayer & Conan... Two of my idol.....
