I highly highly highly recommend watching the live at Madison Garden to get a full picture of what they are about. Also, Theo Katzman is a wizard interchangeably killing it on vocals, guitar, and drums like they each are his main instrument.
I love the thread of music you can pull on. Louis Cole does so much with so many great musicians, I love some of the stuff he did with Domi forever ago.
That compressed sound is pretty much a constant in Vulfpeck. Jack Stratton (the frontman on keys wigging out) whipped up this “Vulf Compressor” back in the day, and it’s a consistent element in their signature vibe
The drummer, Louis Cole, in addition to being a phenomenal solo musician, is part of a duo, Knower, that does a similar thing to vulf- they write the songs and then play with a larger group of phenomenal musicians, often live recording at home. Their latest album has phenomenal bass playing from Mono Neon and Sam Wilkes. Highly recommend checking it out some of those videos- Abyss, Nightmare, I am the President. Any of them really.
As an active rock and pop drummer for nearly 30 years with a somewhat respectable repertoire of chops, I've always been fascinated by these jazz drummers and their effortless 16th note triple strokes on the ride hand while they're simultaneously doing intricate 16th ghost note patterns on the snare. Never could do that and I most likely never will 😅
Dude I love vulfpeck, especially this song! I like the offshoot “The Fearless Flyers” a lot, too. Definitely worth checking out to see even more of what Joe can do. He’s a beast!

Great to see your take on some funk. Vulpeck and The Fearless Flyers have impeccable discographies. Can't wait to see you cover some more of these guys. Congrats again in your success, man!
Another great reaction! I really do enjoy these. You really know what you´re talking about when it comes to all the little details i´d probably miss. I really recommend checking out more Vulfpeck, especially Dean Town. It is an instant classic and over the years millions of bass players will learn it, just like millions of bass players learned What is hip by Tower of Power. Since Louis Cole is playing drums in this video, i have to recommend him too. His band Knower is absolutely fantastic and also in this new funk/jazz realm. The song Overtime (the live band session) is really insane and Sam Wilkes is tearing up his P-Bass.
I love your metal reactions but I really do like when you dig into the jazz and funk worlds as well. Some absolutely insane bass players. Great video dude!
What I like about this video is that it's clear that you never heard this song before, unlike many other reaction video channels. I know it because you called Jack Stratton the "key guy" and Theo Katzman the "other guitar player" 😂
Dude I only heard about Joe Dart the same way from a UA-cam clip. I am now a Joe Dirt fan boy and my god has it inspired some songs that I have written lately! Thank you for covering this. Funk is where BASS belongs!
I can't remember who it was, but a jazz great was playing with Miles Davis and played "the wrong note" and Miles just added it to his part in response. After the show he said something to Miles about the "wrong note", Miles' reply was something like "MFer, if you played the wrong note then I played the wrong note, and that's just not possible now is it?"
I'm a nube in bass playing, and rather old for this, but the one thing i get about all bass lines and especially funk bass lines. You can't just play your part, you must dance your bass lines through your body, science you feel it you'll get some results Look at Joe Dart he literally dancing his bass lines
I am genuinely jealous of you getting to hear Vulfpeck songs for the first time. I try to show this band to anyone that will listen. Enjoy and please make us some videos on your thoughts of more from them.
Love your videos! Please react to Wojtek Pilichowski‘s live show songs "Fair of Noise" and "Slap Maschine"! He‘s an amazing bass player who slaps crazily fast and funky so please react to some of his songs and breakdown his techniques like you always do!
It's insane that a musical internet creator doesn't know about Vulf. They broke the ceiling, sold out Madison Square Garden as their first show. The Fearless Flyers opened. By the time you figure out what Joe is doing, you're way behind. They're all jazz musicians and iirc, that's Louis Cole behind the set.
Wiggin' out key guy is Jack Stratton. He plays whatever he's needed on at any time, and is generally... certifiable. Search his name on here and you'll quickly see what I mean.
Hey second time I watch one of your reaction, really enjoy the groove(instead of vibe) you 're sharing and when I look at bass coach react you're the first 1 who comes Out, so I wanted go share a Suggestion for another reaction video : Jimi Hendrix Voodoo Child (Slight Return) live 1969 Stockholm I know What your thinking Bass reaction on an Hendrix song you should ask a Guitarist😂 but I never heard Voodoo Child with the Bass That present maybe a soundcheck would have been required cause Bass Tone really Stealing the Show on this one so just Wanted you to check a look✌️
BRO, when If you need a new Gnarley bass player, check out Vincent Garcia! He's like a Spanish Joe Dart. Hes a beast. Played with Cory Wong and Giacomo Turra too.
Dude i need you to look into Nuclear Power Trio. Anything by them would be great. Please i will spam every day. I usually listen in the mornings when dropping my kids off at school so i have time.
Next stop: Dean Town
Yes.. Dean town was hard to master . I may never get that Dean on. ...ha
Exactly what they said during the msg concert ❤
I highly highly highly recommend watching the live at Madison Garden to get a full picture of what they are about. Also, Theo Katzman is a wizard interchangeably killing it on vocals, guitar, and drums like they each are his main instrument.
It's the best out there, I can't find anything bad in everything they've produced.
I second that!
I can't find a way to upvote this any better. So I just thumbs up'd everything after this :D
Theo is a bit of a self indulgent ass. But damn if he isn't my musical hero as well 😅
Louis Cole, the drummer, has a lot of interesting and fun projects. I like his solo stuff and his stuff with KNOWER
You can't forget clown core!! 🤡 🎉
@@13ballh I need more clown core in my life!
I love the thread of music you can pull on. Louis Cole does so much with so many great musicians, I love some of the stuff he did with Domi forever ago.
@@13ballh Clown core? Louis Cole has no idea what you're talking about.
mononeon on bass, another legend

Joe Dart does the funk chicken neck better than anyone I've ever seen.
One of my favorite bassists in one of my favorite bands! JD is awesome.
Request: Violent Femmes.

I'd absolutely love to see a video about Knower's Overtime (live sesh)!
Dude, you gotta listen to the studio sessions of the Fearless Flyers (Tailwinds Album). They. Are. Insane.

pretty sure Theo’s on baritone too
Love Joe Dart! If you want a song that is essentially a 4 minute bass solo, check out Beastly by Vulfpeck.
They put the tone through an SP-303 for the warmth. That’s the secret to that warm compressed tone
Dude I only heard about Joe Dart the same way from a UA-cam clip. I am now a Joe Dirt fan boy and my god has it inspired some songs that I have written lately! Thank you for covering this. Funk is where BASS belongs!
I would love to hear your reaction to the Madison Square Garden version of Beastly. I think you'd find Joe's solo very interesting.
Just found joe dart last year and he's such a badass.
The compression that you are hearing is actually called the Vulf Compressor that Jack Stratton (Crazy Key player) came up with. Joe DI's.
Dancing is highly underrated when people talk about the pocket and groove in general.
My favorite of Vulfpeck is Lost My Treble Long Ago. A funky little rhythm. You should check it out! The bass is the lead melody of the whole song!
Jimmy Johnson playing Panic Station Live in Japan with Alan Holdsworth. Needs to be highlighted. I'll keep my fingers crossed

Thanks a lot for the video!!!
his signature bass only has a single volume knob, because his tone comes from the shades
He digs in and has a relatively high action. Always muting everything.
I'm a nube in bass playing, and rather old for this, but the one thing i get about all bass lines and especially funk bass lines.
You can't just play your part, you must dance your bass lines through your body, science you feel it you'll get some results

Damn dude you have a killer tone. Reminds me of Ray Shulman.

this music is fun
Joe Dart on the Joe Dart!
You gotta listen to it gets funkier 1. Bass is loud and so good in the mix
It's insane that a musical internet creator doesn't know about Vulf. They broke the ceiling, sold out Madison Square Garden as their first show. The Fearless Flyers opened.

YAASS! MOAR FUNK!
And that is Louis Cole on drums there. A generational talent
Keyboard player did a 180 on the keys.....crazy.
Is there a Part V? Or is this where funk tops out?
Amazing video. I’d like to hear more Alice In Chains, any and all of it!
Joe Dart is a beast.
Wiggin' out key guy is Jack Stratton. He plays whatever he's needed on at any time, and is generally... certifiable. Search his name on here and you'll quickly see what I mean.
Welcome to the Conscious Club!
"This key guy is wigging out"
can someone give me the name of the bass joe dart is playing in this vid?
Fishbone - Bonin' in the Boneyard
CAN YOU PLEASE DO A BREAKDOWN OF "THE OLIVE TREE" BY SCALE THE SUMMIT?! THEIR BASS PLAYER IS AWESOME AND TOTALLY DESERVES YOUR ATTENTION.
XD
I'm guessing you've never heard Louis Cole. That's a guest, these are jazz kids who made it
Joe dart 🔥
Kashmere Stage Band. Best high school jazz band ever!

Beastly, Disco Ulysses. check them out :)
Can anyone tell me the scale he’s using in the breakdown part? Sounds like pentatonic but maybe with some blue notes and chromaticism added in?
Joe loves to use the minor pentatonic with the flat 5 added or the major version of the pentatonic with the minor 3rd added.
🤯🤯🤯

I think he doesn't now who Louis Cole is either:')
Do u have perfect pitch by any chance?
I do!
This is the most irritating music I've ever heard! 😂
