@@IanMartinAllison that’s pretty good time, you did an awesome job! I also really appreciate the clarity of the bass in the recording, it really helps with recognizing the notes/intervals. I love that there’s tab/notation with this, but I highly recommend learning it by ear first. IMO the only way to train your ear to recognize intervals and patterns is by doing it. To be honest, you didnt struggle nearly as much as I expected, hearing those intricate lines, and the "singing before playing" advice and demonstration is GOLD to wrap your head around things. Thank you for this video.
As for an idea of what to put Scott through: Ernie Ball have this "string theory" video series inviting artists to talk and play their isolated parts. There's one with Justin Chancelor from Tool where his tone and riffs shine throughout the whole thing, but at 7:37 he plays a part of "Wings for Marie", the section on 8:56 is (in my opinion) one of the most beautiful things ever written for bass, which I never before fully appreciated hearing it within the mix with the also haunting Maynard vocals on top. I wish Scott could try learning and playing the whole section for us, if you could. Thanks!

This is the most entertaining video I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. I’m grinning like I slept with a hanger in my mouth. I’ve been learning to play songs like this for 25 years. It took me several hours to figure out this bassline - but I love the teaching point about singing the notes. If you can’t find them with your voice, it’s going to be much harder to find them on your bass!

I just learned Dean Town in the last week.... one piece of advice for everyone is if you do a play along with a UA-cam video, you can customize the playback speed. The preset is to 0.75 if you need to slow it down, but you can increase it in 5% increments without any change in pitch in the customization tab. I found that a huge help because the jump between 0.75 and normal is too much of a shock when you are learning it. I just went, 80, 85, 90, 95 and pretty much have it now. Its a tough tune and the ability to gradually ramp up the speed helped me a lot.

I love watching the SBL clips! And i'm not even a bassplayer myself. If you guys ever find the time to talk about Aaron Mills from the band Cameo, that would be great! Greetings from Belgium.

love how they keep lamenting about how incredibly difficult it is while this dude’s just casually nailing it with his godlike ear

Guys, it's great to see you and hear you figuring out these pieces of music but could you talk about the theory behind each phrase more. You are both excellent bass players, this stuff comes very easy to you. Give us some of your knowledge in terms of how the song is constructed harmonically, rhythmically and so on. Love you guys!

Can we get a video giving Bob Hardy of Franz Ferdinand some love? Seriously underrated bassist, and most of his lines in 'Tonight' are top tier.

It's really telling how quickly Ian can hear and then sing parts. I'm pretty sure this reflects years of transcribing! There's no royal road 🛣️ (or it's nice video editing)
