How to learn vocabulary in a smart and effective way? Not just spaced repetition! (Subtitles)

- I'm trying to share with you some very useful tips and tricks to help you actually USE the words rather than mechanically MEMORIZING them, which will improve your productivity and help you really speak the language.

There are a lot of great videos talking about "spaced repetition" and "active recall" on UA-cam. So I don't want to repeat in my video but I try to show you concrete examples of how I learn vocabulary step by step, I hope you can get inspired.

For Chinese language I study 10 words daily that's 3650 annually, you're already hsk5 level upper intermediate in 1 year only

I'm actually doing the same thing now for almost a year I guess? I wish I had started sooner.

I appreciate the effort of these UA-camrs, but I must say that a 5 minute video might have been sufficient for these points.
vocabulary, in my opinion, is the most challenging part of learning a language. there's no use knowing all that grammar if you don't even know enough words to attach to it or to understand what it's saying. i've always struggled with just memorizing them since i tend to forget them after. what really helps is memorizing it and seeing it somewhere else. i guess this is where immersion really comes to play.
if u need to read japanese stories i advice u to read “tadoku free read” and look for free books for every level. u can write the words down and memorize them better when u actually see them in context
Correct! Take a thin grammar book to get an overview first, and then use it as a point of reference.
After that just keep consuming content in your target language. If you can read the language do sentence mining alongside (~20 cards/day) to enhance your progression. Best of luck!
I use Anki to learn about 20 words a day, but I think it really depends on the person. For some people, people won't like this method of learning.
I watched the video to learn English. but i don't understand something. Is google translate and reverso enough to learn the meanings of words? I am waiting for your answers
I am socio-linguistic students and speak 12 foreign languages, and my native speaker is indonesian language. The first input that i do is listening the native speaker. I listen their pronounciation, accents, intonations and stressing without knowing the meaning. I just only know the the language phonetics. Then, the second input is reading the phrase or the sentence. I look for the tv show or talk show of the target language, i read the subtitles while listening their phonetics without knowing the meaning. I only focuse their phonetics. With variety of the voices from the native speaker that i listen, From the heavy voices, deep serious voices, and children voices. If we have got accustomed with their phonetics, when we speak to the native speaker, we can minimalize our difficulty. Word is the sequence of the sound, intonation, stressing, pitch, and speed that articulators produce. The third input is to learning the phrase or sentence, not word by word. Our memory is easier to save the meaning information and recall them. We can make 5 phrases or sentences based on what we have ever experienced. First time i used this way when i learned chinese mandarin (普通话), because we know that chinese has many accents based on the geography. In casual situation, the chinese native speaker don't use the standard pronounciation fully, they are still influenced by their local dialect, that's why we need to learn their phonetics. When i speak to guandong people, i have no difficulty to understand her pronounciation, because before i have got accustomed to listen them. They sometimes reduce the sound "h", for example, 说 (shuo) = suo, like taiwan accent. When i speak to dongbei people (东北人), i can minimalize my difficulty to understand them, because i have ever listened to their pronounciation and speed of speaking. They sometimes reduce word pronounciation from the word combination, it means that they don't pronounce the words completely or fully.
Memorizing 5 verbs a day past and present tense is so smart. I was looking for ways to memorize vocab and that's such a good idea. Great video!
Why learn past and present tense? You just need to learn all conjugations and then only memorize the infinitive verb.

Exercising those 5 memorized words in your brain with the past and present Tense , then practicing it with your mouth is actually really Effective , I didn’t knew it until I tried it myself !!
@@zsualite7984 but it really depends on the language. In many languages the are many different categories of verbs that each have different conjugations, often also irregular ones.
@@LaFou06 Yeah, in Japanese you have for example iru/eru and u verbs. You just learn those conjugations. Took me a few hours to learn all conjugations in Japanese.

- write in diary in language.
-listen to language as much as can
-capture words just learned and imitate the accent
-meditation: before five minutes to bed or morning routine. ask:

>What did I learn yesterday?
3. Taking Notes
-What are main resources to learn vocabulary?
-Use Reverso application
-Don't just rely on flash cards (use for airport, public transport, etc.)

You are 100% correct. I am an English teacher and many parents ask me why I don't teach from a text book but I know from experience that the more they speak, connect and make verbal mistakes, the quicker they learn. Excellent video!

I am struggling with Japanese words for the time being. The conjugations+tenses+sentences method is life-saving. Ive thought about doing conjugation but Ive never thought about combining the tenses with it and more importantly using them! This video is so inspiring . I learn English by doing a lot of exercise when I am back in school. It's time to renew my techniques. I love learning languages so much. Japanese and German are now my main interest. I hope that I can get better with Japnese faster and then move to german. Thanks again Zoe. Your suggestions are practical and freshing!

As an english learner, I recomend you to find a way to avoid "I" each time you start a sentence. It happend to me, take it as the next step.
I am also studying Japanese and German simultaneously and I find this video very helpful and refreshing.
there is no conjugation in japanese... there are only helper verbs. and the tenses are much easier than english.
the way i got over that was just by watching more anime and then watching literally every single video from the youtube channel "Organic japanese with Cure dolly" - that gives you the underlying structure - the real structure, not the nonsence they teach in textbooks. and now im just learning more words.
@@radekmojzis9829 true. they try to fit Japanese in a english way but it doesnt work out very well xD also Cure dolly is amazing. she taught me so much others didnt even teach. Yeah if you think of "'conjugations" in japanese more as "words", it helps more. I also recommend Cure dolly's course. its free on youtube

Really good content! As an aspiring polyglot myself (currently studying German, French and Japanese at the same time), I think I was overlooking the fact that active recall should be the best way to be able to really internalize the words and be able to use them. Thank you for sparing us the effort and time wasted into learning vocabulary using any of the other methods you mentioned and instead focusing on what really brings results!

I love your tips! My jhs teacher used to tell me to memorize 20-50 English words in a week (im not native). And i couldn't. Then in my shs, my teacher told me to learn the grammar first; present, past, etc. And now i manage to speak it well and (mostly) grammatically right because i know how to use those words.
The fact that you said you're studying FOUR languages at once, has encouraged me to not put off learning Hindi while I'm learning Korean.

@@KelahCash You will never be able to learn the language like this, hindi is one of the hardest languages for english speakers to learn you cannot play around like that with It and expect to learn It. You should enroll in a lingoda online course If you have got the time and the money. Its one of the best ways to learn a language online. otherwise you should research on your own on how you can learn a language online. I'd suggest to learn from a book that takes you from beginner level to intermediate and has lots practice material. Watch videos on individual topics too and make sure to practice listening and speaking alongside you book. The best way to learn vocabulary is the flashcards methods. Learn about anki and how to use It for language learning. Once you are through A1 level then you can start to immerse yourself in the language more with consuming content in the language. It will start to get fun the deeper you get into the language and the culture. Good luck! I myself am learning my first language, German.

1. Get attention to useful and frequent words. Quality is better than quantity
2. Don't only rely on active recall and spaced repetition. Digest actively new words as much as possible (write down the summary of what you learned, listen, catch and speak out loud the word you just learned, and try to review words in 5-10mins before starting your daily routine)
3. Classify the resources which are used to get new words (article, UA-cam video, speaking) into specific groups and take notes toward these groups. Last but not least, use appropriate notes (app, online docs, notebooks) to review effectively

I think you probably already know this, but you do not have to copy and paste from Excel to Anki, you can import the Excel file with all the words and definitions into your specified deck and all the cards are automatically created. I did not know this when I started using Anki and after I started importing the Excel file, this saved me so much time. Keep up the good work!
I am a turkish teenager and i started to read Turkish classics of 19-20th centuries and as you may know there are many arabic and persian words in The Ottoman turkish version so i struggled a lot. Your video is really efficient and now i'll just use them in my own sentences. Thanks!❤

Hi Zoe, you're definitely right! It's really necessary to reflect on one's own learning-strategy from time to time. I am currently not very satisfied with mine. I feel a bit like a slave of the space-repetition-approach and have to do some adjustments. Space-repetition is so time- consuming that other aspects of language-learning are neglected. Your hints are precious in this regard. This Reverso-add-on e.g. was new to me. I think it could be combined with the free-version of LinQ.
Yeah, I haven't heard of reverso add-on, though there is a deepl addon, which is great, but not presenting with much sentences examples.
As for space repetition, I also like new app - remnote, it's a bit complicated at start, but creating flashcards is so fast in there and it's free both IOS, PC and Android.
Omg this video is so interesting! I'm a linguistics major, and I'm studying Spanish and Korean right now. I want to study some more languages, and i have a few in mind for the near future, but this video has given me so much useful information on learning languages. I love learning languages and i get so much thrill from it, just finding out i can understand a word or a sentence is just so exciting. I've recently begun to use HelloTalk, it's this app that lets you talk to ppl around the world who wish to learn languages as well. I talk to people on there who want to learn English, and I learn Spanish from them. It's a great way to practice a language. I would recommend to anyone who needs more practice. The downside is that it requires a subscription for most of its features.

Such a helpful video. I have been learning Korean for going into my third month now, and am using many of the methods you have suggested here. I often do the walking around, looking at things and speaking them out when I can whilst at work, making sentences when I can. I also try to learn verbs by making as many sentences as I can in past, present, future tense, and then build them up with lots of adverbs etc. I admit I have recently started trying to learn lists of new words everyday though, which I've found doesn't work half as well as they're gone from my mind the next day, or lack the context you say about which makes them much harder to learn this way. So I'm glad to have found this video to put me back onto the more useful methods. I also find UA-cam lessons much more concise and so useful than text books etc, which I've tried but keep moving away from, except to check on details I learn in the UA-cam videos. The main weakness I have is listening, so will definitely adopt the Reverso tip and try to watch as many videos as I can to help me with that side of things. Do you just download this tool to apply it to subtitles in a video like you showed in this video? Thank you for the inspiration.

I have found your channel recently and I like it. I can say that I speak seven languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Russian and Greek. I like studying foreing languages, that was my motivation. I studied them by myself using manuals and reading and writing. Yes, I learned Russian, German and French at school and when I was a student at the Sofia University, we have courses in Russian, French and German. When I was studying, there was no internet in my country. I am from Bulgaria and from Sofia, the capital. At present, there are such modern opportunity to study. I read and write every day in English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Greek, Russian. This is my daily round.

Je suis une française d’origine turc. Je parle donc le français et et le turc comme langue maternelle. Depuis quelques années j’apprends l’anglais comme je peux. Je suis contente car j’ai compris toute ta vidéo. Merci pour toutes ces conseils. Je veux plus tard apprendre l’allemand et l’arabe car j’ai des bases sur ces langues et des raisons. I just found your channel and it helps me a lot. I'm 23yo, who is learning korean and german, and still improving my English which is my second language.
When I was in school studying Spanish, we would have to either read or listen to different pieces written or spoken by native speakers for native speakers. For example, a news article or a radio show.
After, we would write a summary of the piece in Spanish. Once we wrote our summary, we would present it to the class. However, we would present it on our own. We couldn’t just read our summary out to the class. My teacher did allow us to take a small bullet point list with us to the podium, in Spanish of course.
After presenting, the class would ask questions about my presentation and the piece and I would have to answer.
It was an intermediate Spanish course, but out of my four Spanish classes I took, that work improved my Spanish way more than any other method BY FAR.
I of course had to build a foundation of basic grammar and vocab, but nothing improved my Spanish more than the immersed environment my professor managed to create.
I spent 7 years after my classes not using my Spanish so I lost a lot of it, but now I’m using the same sort of method my teacher used to help me regain my lost Spanish knowledge and it’s coming back very fast.

You are so right about not memorizing. I am conversing all the time. With the repetition of conversation, I truly learn the words over more time, but I remember them well and in context. More and more, I understand that in the conversation, it is important to connect general words with emotion words. Those emotions will stimulate memorization. For example: I burned my hand on the pot and it really hurt. I thought I was so stupid for burning my hand on the pot.

For me personally, I listen to podcast before sleep until I fall asleep totally. It helps me memorize the words better and the tone of the pronunciation. Learning German now. It helps my brain to think every day and also strengthen my memory because I am quite weak on that. Thank you for the tips, Zoe.

In order to learn languages you should be smart and very motivated to study everyday. Also speaking to native speakers and travelling is the major key to keep the language alive. I've learned German for two years at school and since I don't practice it I almost forgot everything I learned now I can only remember some basic words.

I've been studying English for a few months now, combining it with my regular non-language job. (Actually, about a couple of years, but due to external circumstances I've had very big breaks in my studies).
At first I just studied vocabulary cards and translated into Russian (my native language) articles or texts that interested me. A couple of weeks ago, a polyglot friend of mine told me that I shouldn't keep doing only translations. That it was a bad way to learn a language. She said that I should try to make language real by using it. Like watching interesting videos in English, writing comments, and not being afraid of mistakes.
It really helped a lot! In just a couple of weeks I suddenly began to understand English much better, although I didn't learn a single new word. I just let myself relax and try to understand the meaning of a particular video.
I apologize for the mistakes, I suspect there are many, but I hope to get better in the next years and pass some international exam .

Learning vocabulary and functional sentences that are applicable in your daily life makes all the difference. There's a big difference between learning hundreds of vocabulary words and actually being apply them in REAL LIFE with confidence and fluency.

I learned English when I was very young, even long before you were born 1982 - 1989.
I had a good English teacher back then..
besides, I read English magazines, watched American movies, etc.. English is the only foreign language to learn formally at school ...
I learned German 1990 - 94, went to Munich 1993.
after returning from Munich, I learned B2 - C1 levels, discussing German newspapers and magazines ..
I had a lot of opportunities to speak German with Dutch tourists, because Dutch usually speak German as well.
I learned French 1994 - 1996.
many French vocabs are similar with English.
I learned Russian, late 1999 - 2002 ..
I read Russian novels.
this is difficult, because Russian is not so close with English ....
so far I sometimes try ro read Russian, while I don't learn German and English anymore..
I started to learn Mandarin since 2017, when I was already 48 years old .... and still repeating Mandarin vocabularies.. listening to Chinese-speaking channels in YT ..
I also learn Japanese since 2017 for comparison with Mandarin, but not so intensively as Mandarin..
I never succeed to learn Arabic...

Steve Kaufmann indeed learned Russian when he was 60.
now, as he's already 75 or so, he learns Arabic and Persian...
I understand 6 foreign languages : English, German, French, Arabic, Russian, and Mandarin with different levels of abilities.
I speak German pretty well, and been to Munich to learn German.
It was long time ago that I reached B2 level, nearly C1.
But it seems that my German deteriorates.
I also learned French and Russian, but I don't speak those languages very well like my German, and of course, my fluent English.
Now I'm learning Mandarin, and I believe my Mandarin reached A2 or B1 level, because I got Hsk-3 in October 2019.
The problem is maintaining the ability.
Once you get the B level, you start to be fed up with the language you have learned, unless you have a very high motivation and specific purpose to learn the language.
And after that the next question is whether you can maintain the level that has been attained.
I reached B2 or even almost C1 in German long time ago, but now it seems that I can only answer relatively correct the B1 level.
My German deteriorates.
Language is a matter of habits and habitation....
so, now I think I just try to maintain those languages which I have already learned.
when I was a boy, I even wanted to learn dead languages like Sanskret and Latin, but as time went on, I changed my mind ..
I used to be a language lover, maybe I still am ...
but as time goes by, many things happen to me, so I try to make a living first as a government employee, while sometimes doing my hobby repeating languages which I have learned.

Thank you so much! My method is a mix between Anki and practice. I study with textbooks so first I study the grammar points of that chapter + vocabulary, then, before I go to sleep I write down 1 sentence for each grammar point using as many new vocab as possible! As I don't have much time to study I found this to be the best way for me because I can practice two things at once

I view Anki flashcards as living and dynamic: start with a word, the moment it is learned, add a verb or adjective, then build a phrase. Constantly change them the moment they become familiar, adding new words learned. It can be used as a phrase notebook: constantly evolving, never static. The "Edit" button while viewing an Anki flashcard is perhaps its most powerful feature. manzana to tres manzanas to ¿vende manzanas? to como manzanas todos los días. My flashcards are constantly being edited as my vocabulary grows. Thank you for your wonderful videos.

i ove you! thank you for these videos, I'm learning japanese and korean at the same time, and was struggling figuring out the bes way to study my vocabulary, I use quizzlet which has worked really well so far, but as you grow on vocabulary and are no longer a beginner it loses a bit of effectiveness, your video where you shared you use google sheets was super helpful, now I note my vocabulary on notion and i can even categorize like you showed! These tips on this video are super helpful too!

This is so helpful. I was learning Turkish and I've hit a wall with it. I reached complete burnout and haven't studied in a few months. I'm going to start gradually incorporating these methods into my daily studies.

I homeschool my children and we've decided that all 5 of us in my family will learn together, in hopes that it will be an immersive environment, which will help us all. I'm going to also find a way to play movies, shows and others in that language to help us. My husband and I already speak some German and we know native speakers. We will all become polyglots over time. Spanish will be next, since my husband has a strong base in Spanish from being raised in an area that has a lot of Spanish speakers. I speak a little and understand the pronunciation along with some other basic understanding. Then I think we will let the kids vote on the 3rd language, or if 3 or 4 that we give them a choice from, like Russian, Chinese, Japanese or Swedish.
That’s amazing. Your kids are going to be well-rounded knowing several languages.
