Here are 3 tips that I think are the most important for learning a language on your own.
In this video, I will give you concrete examples and show you how I study and use different methods. You can skip to the part that may answer your question.

Wow thanks so much for this super interesting video! I am a 52 years old man who has decided to study Hindi ! I began to study it 2 weeks ago and I was thinking that I was a bad student because I could study it just for 30/40 minutes a day. I am approaching to a new language after many years so you can imagine my difficulties... Besides as you know in youtube when you start to watch a video ,you get on the right a lot of suggestions about the same subject so I got lost... Hello Antonio, thank you for sharing your story and it is truly inspiring! I always believe that we could learn a language at any age if we want to! I will try to make more study method videos to help in the future. When it comes to vocabulary, the most important thing is not the number we learn every day, because it really depends on your time and energy. Even if you only learn 10 words a day, if you digest them, make sentences with them and revise them, after 30 days you will have 300 words digested, which is more productive than studying 50 words a day but you forget most of them after a month.
Good luck with learning Hindi! I'm a native speaker and I feel happy when people try to learn Hindi.

@@antoniob.italia79 Oh many... I speak Hindi/Urdu and Punjabi at native level, and I speak English fluently cause, you know, I'm Indian,, I am fluent in German and now I am learning Indonesian, Turkish and Japanese. I'm 18 so I have my whole life in front of me for languages.
1- make a reasonable plan for yourself, u don't have to copy other's plan.
2- Do less but regularly, the most thing is consistincey.
3- Do it less but with focus.

The problem of learning foreign languages is maintaining the ability.
Once you get the B level, you start to be fed up with the language you have learned, unless you have a very high motivation and specific purpose to learn the language.
And after that the next question is whether you can maintain the level that has been attained.
I learned German long time ago, and been to Munich to participate in a summer course..
I reached B2 or even almost C1 in German long time ago, but now it seems that I can only answer relatively correct the B1 level.
My German deteriorates.
Language is a matter of habits and habitation....

Hi it's great to see a polyglot. I speak 5 languages Bengali, English, French, Dutch and Greek however understand passively and communicate also in arabic, Spanish and Italian. I studied for a while by myself Russian but stopped as I was busy with work. Some years back while traveling in Iran I was able to speak Farsi as Bengali has many Farsi words and comes from Indo-European root. One day I would love to learn Chinese as I love calligraphy as well. I practice Arabic calligraphy which I find that it holds graphic and poetic expressions and is an extension of the beauty of languages ❤️❤️❤️

I'm from Brazil. I just found your channel. My tips are: Listen a lot even before start learning the language. Rewatch the same interview video weekly or at least monthly because your level on the language is always rising, so the video is familiar to you and you will be able to understand more each time. Watch movies and tv shows (one or two episodes) without subtitles first, then rewatch it with subtitles on the language you are learning and the last time with subtitles in your mother tongue. Okay, after watching hundreds of language learning tips videos on UA-cam, this one has to be the best. Tips that are actually helpful and ones I can easily apply to my language learning routine.
I am in the same place in Arabic. I have learned to read and write it, and I can have a simple conversation. My biggest thing has been training my ear to listen. I think listening and writing correct verbs is always the most challenging thing in any language. I hope to be like you one day, and speak not just three languages but also ASL, a language and culture in and of itself. Good luck to all out here!

My mother tongue is Russian, my second language is English, I speak French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and German and know basic Japanese and my dad's mother tongue Polish. Currently I am trying to study Chinese and Arabic (which are both quite hard and much harder than the other languages mentioned above) and continue studying Japanese. I have a question. Don't you get confused between words as you know many languages. As every language has different words. Don't they get misplaced in languages ?
@@kd7412 Sure, firstly, I am trying to practice every language separately and every day (eg by watching news, Netflix, reading) - with time, the ability to switch from language to language came (I acknowledge that I can still occasionally confuse Spanish and Portuguese, but only in writing). Secondly, I have a job (at an international law firm) which allows me to practice. Thirdly, many of these languages are different (and I studied those which are from the same group very slowly when I had time, so I was not overwhelmed by differences at a time).

I'm a polyglot already, I know 10 languages by the age of 21 (not all perfectly, but still), but even with that experience I don't have a useful tactic to learn languages faster. I always just did whatever I felt like I wanted to do in the moment, and I only did it when I had motivation, but recently I started realizing how important and powerful consistent studying is, and I was looking for more focused and goal-oriented ways to study, and your ways sound like life-changers for me 😍 especially the one on how you work with short videos. learning new foreign languages is the most interesting thing ever.. i also know 5 languages my mother tongue (arabic, syrian) included, the others are french, english, russian, and italian.. for french and italian, i started with duolingo, and a grammar book, as you do in your process of learning, i also create scenarios about different situations, and speak them out, i try to think and talk to myself in a language i choose this or that day.. i subscribed to specific youtube channels, and follow them, i watch movies, and read books, each time with a different language, to keep my brain ready to shift easily from one to another.. i'm also, a ph.d holder, and was a professor for more than 15 years.. yet i know there's a lot to learn, and once we stop learning, that same moment we stop evolving.. and eventually extinct..

I can't believe you managed to learn so many languages all at once. I've been studying English for about 5 years now, and I'm still wavering between moving forward to French or not. You're truly impressive!
do it!! yes, French can have complicated grammar but if you already know another romance language (assuming it's Portuguese) then it shouldn't be that difficult. you have the concept of masculine/feminine, singular/plural, direct/indirect compliments. learning French would allow you to open communication with a lot of places; Europe, Canada, Africa. it's challenging but rewarding. pronunciation shouldn't be much of a challenge because of the nasalization and the guttural "r" that are already found in Portuguese. in my case I learned Portuguese and because I already knew French and Spanish I didn't find Portuguese difficult, now the only challenge is to keep practicing.

Mandarin has always seemed like an intriguing language to me, but I'm also put off by accounts of individuals pronouncing tones incorrectly and conveying different meanings than intended. Still, the fact that you can speak seven languages is like a superpower, and motivational, thanks!

I know Norwegian and English fluently and then I know Swedish/Danish (but they are like bonus languages that comes almost for free), Spanish, German and French. But mostly Spanish and German but far from fluently so still practicing but for now my focus is Spanish.
It’s so fun when you have been struggling to learn for a while but then you just remember it and understand it. Something clicks and you can understand people when overhearing conversations on the bus, songs etc. Such a great feeling. I only use Duolingo, it takes time but my motivation is still there.

I'm also a polyglot but after learning other languages (on my own since 1999) I've noticed that until I hear the language and understand where one word ends and the other begins I won't be able to learn anything but random vocabulary I noticed this very clearly with Finnish and Dutch.
I don't speak any language that doesn't have the Latin alphabet, maybe when I start Russian or Korean this method needs to be changed but for now that's what works in my experience.
By the way, I'm Brazilian and therefore my first language is Portuguese.
Zoe I'm passionate about China, I even tried to write my final paper at the university on Chinese unification under Qin rule but they didn't let me because there was no expert to be my advisor. I studied History.

Hello, Zoe. Good video, thank you for sharing. One thing I'd like to recommend for training your listening skills. When you go to bed, keep the headphones in your ears and listen anything in the language you learn. Better to listen to the text or conversation that contains words that you already know. Do not stop listening and fall asleep. There is a short gap between the moment when you fall asleep and go to a deep sleep mode. At this time the brain absorbs the sound the best. I am not saying that you will learn those words automatically, BUT your brain will be adopt the new language code. If you do this 3 times per week, you will begin understand the native speakers much faster and easier. I am not sure how it works, but it does. Just remember, that this method will take some time to get used to it.

That’s really interesting, I’ll give that a try. I usually listen to things while I sleep anyway (usually white noise), but I think it’ll be beneficial for me to listen to something in the language I’m trying to learn. Hopefully it helps a bit!

Hello Zoe! I have always been interested in learning new languages, I only know English really and since I grew up in a Hispanic household, I also know a bit of Spanish as well. I want to learn so many other languages, as well as my dad's Spanish dialect, Otomi. I feel like these tips will really help me, I always thought to learn something you had to learn for hours and hours so I would get stressed out knowing I didn't have that time. Your method makes prioritizing the time spent learning, however small it is, important and meaningful. Thank you!

I’m learning French. I learned in high school but completely ignored it the last 15 years lol so I’m revamping. The hardest part for me is learning masculine and feminine. I know how to conjugate accordingly if only I could remember what is masculine and feminine. I try to compare the words to their genders into something I can remember but even then I second guess myself and I get it wrong a lot lol. The second hardest part is knowing where to put the “des, les, au, a, ou, de, le, un, une, la, en” lol it gets confusing as it doesn’t seem consistant but I know that English isn’t very consistent either so that’s comforting lol

languages might have,
but French uses some same, others different among the 7-nous & vous in all 7, but then
much chaos in overlapping or not.

@@cristianomessi8079 do you speak portuguese? There are some lessons in Fluency Tv in French for Brazilians for free... and it's a great way to learn French and there are some amazing podcast called Little Talk in Slow French and French with Jeanne that are great for beginners

I have 2 questions that I hope anyone reading could offer advice for!

I really want to learn Arabic, Feyli Kurdish, French, Korean and Chinese, however I'm so nervous that I mix everything together if I study more than 1 language at a time. Do you have any tips for "seperating" your learning and not mixing?

For a language with VERY restricted amount of material to maybe none available material, how would you approach such a language? )'-:
I've tried to find language exchange partner, however those I found (that are Feyli's themselves) mix kurdish with persian due to heavy assimilation, hence many words they don't know themselves in their mother language.
Would be grateful for any tips and advice!!
Look online for out of print books if any exist or online databases for dictionaries. I reached out to a linguist at a university who studied a rare/extinct language and they shared resources with me.

I've spotted one consistent mistake in your english pronunciation though. You tend to omit, or not pronounce, the consonants 'd' and 'm' at the ends of the words. For the letter 'd', this typically happens with past conjugations of verbs. For 'm', the word 'time' is an example. You might want to focus and rectify these in your pronunciation.

I am assuming Zoe is from the Guangdong region in China. If so, then cantonese is her first language and mandarin her second. Cantonese speakers struggle much more than mandarin speakers do when pronouncing English words. Zoe has outstanding pronunciation when you put into that context.

Wow... this is the first time I've heard of Reverso. 🤯😱 It looks like a very powerful and useful tool! For the longest time, I've been trying to figure out a good method of tracking new vocabulary along with context, so it's nice to know about this. I've been struggling to get from intermediate to advanced in Chinese, and it's been hard for me to remember and keep track of the context I learn similar vocabulary words. I will definitely check it out!!!
How do you review the new vocabulary that you learn from the Arabic videos? Do you ever revisit those videos later on, or do you just watch other videos on similar topics so that you can hear the vocabulary in a slightly different context? Do you use any other tools or apps to help get exposure to vocabulary in different contexts? I noticed that as an intermediate language learner in Chinese, it's been hard for me to fully understand all the different ways that a new vocabulary word can be used, especially since a lot of words can be used as both a verb and a noun. I'm not sure how to expose myself to different usages and contexts of new words in an effective manner. I haven't really found any good resources with a large library of sentences. Is there a particular method you use to master vocabulary?
I like your tip about writing about focusing on verb conjugation and learning to talk about things in the past, present, and future. I guess verb tenses are not a huge part of Chinese grammar, but I recently started to learn French, so this will be useful to keep in mind when I get a little more advanced in French to write.

Actually I've been having the same dilemma about starting and balancing studying multiple languages at once, but I feel extra motivated to hear about how you spent 15 minutes per day and was still able to make meaningful progress in the language! I've also been dabbling a little bit in Arabic and Russian but initially felt hesitant to commit only 15 minutes a day because I was worried if it wouldn't amount to anything, but now I feel less worried after hearing your story~ 💚🤩
I've also been dedicating a few minutes every other day to learn Cambodian for the past 2-3 weeks, and I was really surprised at myself when all of a sudden the alphabet and sounds somehow just felt more intuitive in my mind. Consistency is definitely key! And I also realized that sleep also probably plays a huge role into giving your brain time to consolidate all the new information and into your subconscious and long term memory 🙂
oh and also, thank you for clarifying and emphasizing on how to have a more focused and productive study session. I remember during the early stages of learning Chinese, people would constantly recommend me to watch more videos and dramas in Chinese to improve my language skills, but it just made me feel frustrated with myself for not being able to learn anything and it just felt like I was wasting my time and made me think that I was just bad at learning languages and it really destroyed my self confidence and motivation to learn as well.
I've been pushing myself recently to find a method that works for me and how to study smarter instead and to find materials that are interesting to me. I love the tip you have about choosing a short video to watch and practicing that in different stages with and without subtitles. I feel like I always put too much pressure on myself to immerse myself and to expose myself to lots of different materials. I also recently discovered Assimil as a great resource for getting started in a language. It motivates me to work harder on my French since the majority of their resources are in French 😂
I also like the tip you had about just focusing on pronunciation even if you don't understand it! I think this is very useful especially for languages that have a lot of foreign sounds that don't exist in our native language.
It's extremely helpful that you give concrete examples of how you study and the reasons why. I think it helps debunk a lot of misconceptions that people have about language learning.

To review the vocabulary of course, in fact, all the new words I learned, I will make anki flash cards, I will make a video to explain how I memorize and review the vocabulary. Well if I’m being completely honest, I have come to some of the same conclusions myself very recently in the past few weeks while trying to pick up new languages and was also thinking about how to share those tips with other people. I’m glad you’ve been able to share all these insights in a very concise and clear way. I will definitely share your video with my other language learning friends ^^
I actually think it’s a little funny that the video title says “3 tips”, but I feel like there is soooo much more than that! Tbh, I will probably rewatch it a few times bc of how many details you shared and also bc it will also take some time for me to incorporate all the tips into my own study routine 😊
Oh and I tried Reverso for Chinese today, but it’s not able to recognize compound words yet, unfortunately. I will try it when I get to an intermediate stage for French later though.
