  • 2nd post of the Twice Baked by Firewire Surfboards.
Twice Baked like its predecessors, the Sweet Potato and the Baked Potato, is in the class of "Super" Grovelers. Boards like the Glazer, Seaside, and many other hybrids are already considered grovelers.
The best way to look at a Twice Baked is this. This is the board you want to take out when you don't want to take out a longboard or Wavestorm. The Seaside and other hybrids are boards you want to take out when you don't want to take out a super groveler or performance board.
After surfing this, I think I will always have 2 boards in my car, the Seaside and the Twice Baked.
Super Grovelers from other shapers if I were to compare 5'3" only. Under 30L I would consider a groveler not a super groveler.
    Firewire - Twice Baked - 5'3 21 1/4" 2 3/8" 31.6L
CI - average joe - 5’3 20 7/8" 2 3/8" 29.6L The biscuit would have more volume but not sure they make it anymore.
    Lost - Bean Bag - 5'2 20 1/2" 2 7/16" 28.75L They don't have a 5'3 in stock dims
JS - Flying Pony - 5'3 20 1/2" 2 7/16" 30L I thought they had one called the pier pony that was thicker. not sure
Pyzel - none that I could find
If you guys can recommend others, please comment.
    Thanks

I think this has been some of your best surfing on this board based on your videos I have watched. Some great backhand hooks.

I really like the idea of making several videos per board to show and discuss different conditions for it. Keep 'em coming.

I think the twice-baked surfs much different than the original. I have both and believe proper fin selection is key to getting these boards dialed. I would also add that as every board is different you need to adapt your surfing to the board and not the board to your surfing.

    Great review and surfing
Thomye! It seems that the Baked Potato 2 is a bit controversial. I heard from a few local guys that they still love the first generation of Baked Potato. Anyway, I can't wait to get mine to try it! I've only had experience with the Sweet Potato a few years back.

I would trust your opinion if I ever need another board. Good surfing, but relatable.

Thomye, thanks for the great reviews. Here’s a groveler for your consideration. Album Plasmic. The volume per height seems similar to your twice baked. Width is less though. Might be in between the BP and Seaside but I haven’t tried it. Also, have you tried the sweet potato? I’ve had two Chumlees in separate dims. The one I have now is the same volume as my seaside and I feel like they overlap too much. I like your idea of having a dedicated over volumed super groveler. Thanks again!

I have this board (5'7"), and you said something this video that clicked with me. I have had some really fun days, and then some days when I could not get the board to do anything but bog....As soon as you said the board shines when you DON'T have speed or faster waves, I agreed 100% and realized that (along with my horrible surfing skills) was probably part of the problem on the tough days. This board does not really work as well when it is faster, and definitely not when it is steep (compared to other boards)...at least my opinion. What fin setup did you have in this video? I thought you were surfing great here!

Sweet review, just picked up a few boards for the winter. Wanted to ask if you were going to review the Froth 7'0 foamie to compare to the 5'6. I bought the 5'6 off your review!

Hi Thomye, love your channel and the boards you review. After your video of Twice Baked and its category of "super" groveler, I started considering buying it in 2-3 liters more than my Seaside for our weak summer waves here in Mediterranean. I'm 80 kg and surf 32.5 lt seaside. What fins do you think will work better for it? Did you try Machado quad in it? I have FCS2 plugs in Seaside and spotted 35.5 Twiced baked with FCS2 plugs in a surf shop.
