I read the books as they were published. I remember discovering them through the Scholastics book catalogs. I did enjoy them and they are definitely a product of their time. The only character I wished they had kept more like their book counterpart was Vanessa. I found it different how she had a shaved head and didn’t care for the UES.
I completely agree!
I read the books in 2008/2009 in tandem with watching the show and it was such a treat. I love the show (for the most part) but I really wish they’d kept Vanessa likable how she is in the book. SPOILER: The book storyline where Vanessa and Blair live together would have been soooo fun to see in the show. Sometimes I prefer book Serena over show Serena. The writers tried so hard to make Show Serena ‘good’ and morally superior, while book Serena was more carefree and spontaneous. The books progressively get more batshit crazy and I remember being enthralled with them at 11 years old. CVZ would write the most bonkers one-liners that I still remember to this day.
I agree! Vanessa already seems so much better in the books, it's such a shame!
@37:35 i think Jenny does bring it up first? She threatens Chuck that she'll tell Lily and Rufus about what happened at the kiss on the lips party and get him kicked out. Chuck at some point apologizes, says he'll move out, and then Jenny is like it's fine I forgive you. I watched season two a couple weeks back but I can't fully remember the timeline loo
I used to read gossip girl books from the library
I’ve never read the books (but love the OG show) so this is very interesting to me!
from the way you describe it, it seems to me like the jenny and chuck scene is treated more respectfully in the book, with the focus remaining on jenny and her reaction & emotions about the event instead of becoming about other characters like it is in the show. it feels like in the show they use it as a plot device not just to show that dan and serena are good guys and chuck is a bad guy, but also as a tool to create drama and tension even at the risk of triggering their audience members.
(i was also going to say that they sacrifice realism for drama, as it's more much common for sexual harassment/assault (at a party but also in general) to occur as a guy pressuring a girl into sex(ual acts) she isn't comfortable with and her feeling unable to say no for a variety of reasons (in this case, due to chuck being wealthier, older, and more influential than jenny) than it is for a guy to aggressively force himself on a girl who is vocally protesting (that's not to say that that doesn't happen, or that a girl can't force a guy/a guy can't force a guy/a girl can't force a girl, just that it's not as common as the first example/the scene in the book), but then i remembered that this is gossip girl so i'll let that slide, i guess.)
I read all the books when i was younger and hoooney you have a big storm coming😂😂
Can't wait 😂
I was born exactly a month after this book came out 😳
I love the review! It's tough to remember Hazel. The only reason how I can remember her is because in season one, she mentioned that she did Model UN and I did it as well.
Thank you!!! ❤️
I think I would have read these as a kid, I loved these kinds of storylines and I would have eaten the blog gimmick right up!
so you're telling me that this generation's biggest accomplishment was unironically introduced on april fools? iconic
I am rereading gossip girl and Blair’s eating disorder was also significantly downplayed in the show. I have a soft spot in my heart for the first season of GG and the books are just a whole different vibe!
i haven't read the book but i think you explained it pretty well -the whole sa that happens to jenny-
i'm guessing you meant : it starts as something you feel like you can control, but then the guy escalates the situation (level of intimacy) and you feel like you're too far gone to say 'no', so you just let it happen to you and dissociate? / instead of the knight in shining armor coming to the rescue cause he sees a dude onto you, like you're in a full-on fight kicking and screaming in a dark alley somewhere
I actually really liked the books when I read them at 13/14... my favourites characters were Dan & Vanessa! I loved them. I hated what they did to Vanessa in the show
Gossip girl walked so euphoria could run 🤷🏻♀️
Are you planning read the next ones and make a video? I really enjoyed your explanation
Yes definitely! I'm about half way through the second one at the moment 😊
when i was a kid and obsessed w gossip girl, maybe like 12/13 my family and i went to india to visit my grandparents. i love indian bookstores bc u get books for cheap there and i bought like 10 gossip girl books. they were defo a product of their times but soooo entertaining kinda prefer the books x
That's so cool, I think I might end up preferring the books too!
hazel :)
I think and this is just a theory but maybe the reason it was released on April first because the novel itself is a satire so of course it would make sense it would be released on April fools day. If for those who don’t know what a satire is. A satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. In our case the lives of the insanely rich & beautiful.
i thought it was the reverse, that it was based on the author real life experience so she had to change names and the release on april fool's day a way to really say "just a joke, don't sue me please' :')
@@_bebeboudeur_ it is essentially except yes the names are changed and it has a satirical meaning to it, the whole point is to not take it seriously
The only thing I disagree with you is about Serena being the main character on the books, she definitely wasn’t. She was the main character on the first few seasons of the show but the books are very clear on Blair as the main character and that never changed, I honestly think they were all unlikeable on the book but I do feel Serena was worse than Blair. The books later started following a bit of the series due to popularity but neither of the main couples ended together
I can’t stand Jenny, Rufus and Dan 😅
can't wait for the next book review from you 🫶🏻🫶🏻 enjoyed the deep dives from the show and came here after
