Honestly, in the first episode, I do not see Blair as a villain. Please tell me in what world would it be OK for your best friend to sleep with your boyfriend your first love someone you’ve been with for years and then just disappear without a word Serena was always a villain to me. Even without Blair knowing that they slept together, she could always feel the tension between the two of them and regardless of anything her best friend still left her without a word that’s heartbreaking.

I did not feel Serena was a villain in season 1, but someone in a really dark time and needed help. Than as the seasons went on, she just got worse and more villainous. She was selfish and did not feel a lot of remorse for her actions.
I kind of wanted her to be alone.

i feel she was lowkey for how she treated jenny though. sent a girl out of new york and ruined her fashion career and pretended it was to “save” her when really it was just jealousy when she wasn’t even dating chuck at the time and jenny hooked up w him. if she had been emotionally mature and truly knew her worth she wouldn’t have done so.

Blair's internalized misogyny DEFINITELY comes from her parents' divorce. Her mother is her shadow side; comes across as controlling, self-serving and largely focused on her career over her family. Her father is a more attractive, light side of Blair herself; smiling, happy go lucky and comes across positively. So when Blair forgives the man more than the woman in situations, this is a direct reflection of how she would rather judge her mother whose unafraid to be cruel than her father, who is this sweetheart of a person (even though he was actually the one who cheated and left).

The women surrounding Blair is pretty horrible though. It has noting to do with misogynies. I personally think Blair forgive Serena too quick. If I were her, Serena will be in grave. As for Nate and Chuck, they can go d** too. Blair forgive both men and women too quickly. If I am that rich, I will hire John Wick to get rid of all of them.

I love both my parents but my mother due to her own issues, is much more cold, harsh and ruthless in terms of professionally and with her family, whilst my dad is much more humorous and light-hearted. I can justify almost everything Blair did except the early treatment of Jenny.
So many storylines of Blair’s backstory were glossed over when they should have been more explored- the ED, familial issues, school, Nate, Serena etc. In the early seasons, Blair being portrayed as a villain was unfair to her and (in my opinion) was a tool to make Serena look better. I think Blair forgave Serena and Nate too quickly for such a big betrayal and that was often the case throughout the series; Blair would get horribly wrong and she would be made to feel guilty and forced into forgiveness. I think the reason Blair was more mad at Serena than Nate in season 1 was because she was jealous of Serena as well as disappointed, angry, hurt and betrayed so she viewed her as competition compared to feeling disappointed, angry, hurt and betrayed by Nate but loving him romantically and the “resources” he brought to add to her Queen Bee image. She never competed with Nate but saw him as an equal unlike with Serena so her betrayal felt more like a personal attack and triggered a need to defend what she deemed as “hers”. Also, Serena acting entitled to Blair’s friendship and care made me annoyed because it eventually became a part of Serena’s character; feeling as though her charm and “specialness” would get her out of any situation and could justify all her wrongdoings, which it obviously never did. Idk if this all makes sense.
I also think that a lot of Blair’s behaviour comes as a reaction to the actions of others, whether it be Serena and Nate, Chuck or her family. Whilst some of her actions were a bit extreme, most of her responses to her situations were accurate and almost justified for an unsupervised, rich teen girl.
In terms of Eleanor, no one ever defended Blair when they saw the way she was being treated. Serena especially.

I really wanted an arc where Blair is not mad at Jenny for what happened with Chuck but horrified that Chuck would take advantage of Jenny like that.
I wanted this to lead to a gradual friendship with Jenny and she helps her succeed in her fashion design.
This friendship can lead to Dan’s friendship with Blair due to how she is treating Jenny.
The Serena kind of tricking Dan storyline and where Blair chooses Chuck again makes me puke. It did not need to happen.
I also pictured a storyline where Blair figured Dan was Gossip Girl earlier and decided what goes in and out. Eventually, he quits and everyone os figuring out who the new one is because he doesn’t want to jeopardize anything with Blair.

The part where Dan came to see Blair receive her award was actually a scrapped storyline for Dair that was supposed to be in season 1 before the writer’s strike. The writers think it would be cool to kinda include that, and also Josh Shwartz (who kinda left after season 1 and came back in season 5) wanted to do the original story he wrote for Blair, similar to how he writes for Summer in The OC.

I came into the television series as a reader of the books, where Blair was a favorite character for me. Even though she’s sitting in privilege and wealth, she’s daunted by expectations of her own future as an overachiever, insecure about the fact her boyfriend will always see her best friend as the one he missed out on, and knows that her social status will fall apart if Serena ever decided to ‘take the crown’ so to speak. The book series humanizes her along the way through internal dialog, and gives better perspective when Blair acts out.
Meanwhile, TV Blair is turned into a complete mean girl snob bully caricature - lashes out with no foresight about what later repercussions will be. I’ll admit it was cute to watch as petty drama on a fictional show when I was still in my teens. But as they leave high school and she’s still practicing this behavior in their young adult lives, it started to feel like we were watching an absolute psychopath at work.

Blair is my girl and she can do absolutely no wrong. This is the hill I'm ready to die on.
She had such an amazing journey and the best character development. I would have wanted to see her eating disorder explored more though. But, Serena needed a new boyfriend (as usual).
Leighton did an absolutely wonderful job. She carried that whole show.
Blair and Chuck were toxic as hell, but man did they love each other.
I personally think Dan would have been a better option for her compared to Chuck. She herself admitted it. But, true love and all that.
Louie was very patient with the BS she put him through. Don't blame him for becoming a bit cold, anyone would have under those circumstances.

I agree with her ending up with Chuck but I wish they had explored this relationship more with the writing. They both were so similar and deeply understood each-others pain and suffering. The way they are both treated by their families, constant disapproval and pressure and their thirst to prove themselves. They are also both very lonely at the start. I wish that the writers had explored this more and Blairs ED. I think that is also why she doesn’t take his words seriously a lot as she understands why he lashes out at people. I think on the surface their relationship was very toxic but there was such a deep love and understanding ... ultimately they both had to grow to be able to be together in a healthy way. Although that was ruined slightly in season six with some strange plots ...

  • @ethicalbunny
    @ethicalbunny 10 місяців тому +6

I love Blair and never saw her as a villain. From the start I felt bad for her, although she is rich and glamours and on the surface has it all underneath she is a complex and misunderstood person. She works so hard at school and is under a lot of pressure yet continued to be passed over by people ... this is why she had to end up with Chuck as he is the one person that Serena didn’t sleep with. Serena treated her so badly as did Nate and her mother. I find it interesting that we are almost expected to forgive their behaviour because Blair is the 'baddy' when actually I think it is the opposite. Over the 6 seasons her loyalty, drive and loving nature makes her the star of the whole show; as Chuck says, she never gives up on those she loves. I also quite liked their relationship development in the first few seasons as they were clearly both spoilt horrible people and to actually be happy together they needed to grow up and change themselves.

I’m so happy I came across this video. Like seriously! I’m 36 years old, so probably a lot older then anyone here reading this comment. However, the Gossip Girl book series came out when I was in my early 20’s and being the big book nerd I was, I became obsessed with the books. Then not too long after, I think a year or two, they announced a first ever television season of Gossip Girl. The excitement was real and I couldn’t wait to see if they stuck with the same characters and/or the plot lines. Spoiler alert! They definitely didn’t. 😆
It was still hands down one of my favorite tv shows though! Every Monday night I looked forward to it and nothing would interrupt my GG tv time. One would think I would relate more to Serena’s character, but that wasn’t the case. Blair’s character made the whole show what it was. The complexity of her relationship Chuck is truly what saved it for all those years. It’s like they gave up on Serena’s character development on all ends after the first season. But I was okay with it because even though Blair was suppose to be the “supporting actor” in this show, she really did become the main character/star of it in my eyes! She honestly was just the better actress overall and given a more developed character from day one.
Fun Fact! I was such a fan of Leighton Meester back then, when I had my daughter in 2010, I couldn’t see her having any other name. However to my defense my daughters father is Lee. Her half sisters name is Ava Leigh. Her aunt is Ashleigh & Amanda Leigh. So it actually kind of fit perfect and was such a unique name I had never heard of beforehand. My daughters 12 now and has yet to come across another girl named Leighton. I tell her that’s because she’s one of kind , Queen Bee Baby! 😂 I can’t wait to finally watch the show with her in another a year or so.
One more fun fact if you made it this far! In the pilot episode the woman who played Blair’s overbearing mother, Florencia Lozano, was only in that one episode. That’s it. I guess she wasn’t a good fit going forward for the part. But they couldn’t have gotten a better actress then Margaret Colin to play Blair’s mother. She literally fit the role perfectly. Gossip Girl was so new back then that most viewers didn’t even notice to swap out! 😂
One more add in: I have to say I was actually pretty upset they gave up on the last season in finally revealing Gossip Girl. I guess it fit but then again, I felt like it didn’t in other ways. I’m still very conflicted on it.
I could write so much about my dedicated years watching this show and my opinions/analysis on every season but I’ll save that for others to do. Ironically I shut my cable down not too long after the last season aired and haven’t watched tv like that in almost 10 years now. Just UA-cam videos for me these days. lol. I’ll end this long ass comment here though. Until next time anyways...
    Xoxo Gossip Girl! 💋

To me the best shows are ones where the protagonists have store arcs that ultimately change them for better or worse. Being that is the case Nate is really the only who changes for the better. Blair showed growth and they killed it by putting her back with Chuck. Dan and Blair was the natural conclusion based on everything Blair had gone through. Chuck on the other hand done so many terrible things to everyone on the show. It feels unrealistic to have him bounce back every time with little no lasting consequences. If I had been in charge he would have left at the end of season 3 for Europe and would from that point just be an occasional guest star. Dan and Serena had a similar problem to Chuck and Blair and they were high school sweethearts and putting them back together was just forcing them back into their old dynamic. They had grown apart and were different people by the end of the show. It felt weird putting them back together.

    Edit: you look stunning.
To be honest when I was younger it was harder to forgive a best friend than a boyfriend because boyfriends felt temporary.
Like best friends were everything and the biggest heartbreak was betrayal by a friend. So yes it felt tougher to forgive that break of trust. My two cents.

I don't think shes likeable at all😭 oart of the reason i always liked her better was because of that, shes not someone who charms people... When i was younger i could see myself inher because i always felt i was trying so hard to get what i wanted as opposed to serena ... The ironic thing is now i feel people perceive me more like a serena but the girls that identify with blair ... We know what rejection feels like, so i feel that's the main reason we like her, because she's beautiful but smart and knows the value in making an effort for the things that you want, she demanded respect and i feel rhat if youve felt excluded in tour life getting to a point where you are respected and demand that naturally because of your achievements its huge , idk theres a lot of reaosns as to why girls relate to her or want to be her... And i think we are the ones who have expirienced the ugly side of people

I think she forgives man quicker because of her dad, they had a better relathionship, and she forgive woman not so easily because of her mom and their bad relathionship. She put all her anger on woman because she can not put her anger on her mom. So to me it's more like daddy/mommy issues. Also she forgives Nate quicker because he told her the true, at least he was honest, plus without him, she would be really lonely. After Serena all Blair had was Nate(and Dorota). She just doesn't want to be alone. Her best friend left her in the hardest time of her life, ghosted her, slept with her boyfriend. What Serena did to her in Blair's eyes was worst than Nate actions.

@@yukijames1321 Serena never seamed to regret what she did, she regret it was revealed.
All the good in Blair is coming from Dorota, but even Dorota can't at least balance the damage what Eleanor did to her daughter.
And Blair deep down, afraid to be lonely, because in some ways (emotionally neglected) she was always alone.

Serena was the villain and hypocrite to me in Season 1. But somehow Blair still loved her and forgave her. If I were Blair, I would not even wanna be friends with Serena or Nate or Chuck (later sold her for a hotel) anymore. Blair was too nice. But then as season goes by, especially in Season 5, I started to see more human side of Serena and struggling behind the shadow of Blair; and Dan ditching her for Blair... just like how Blair struggled in the season 1.... then I realize Serena and Blair are not much different. Just humans who are not perfect even if they seem to look perfect with all the beauty and wealth. As they get older, I hope they are both better people now. I want to see them now. I know Blair became much mature better person by the end of season 6 but as for Serena, I am not sure. I feel I miss out her character development.

I highly disagree about Serena being the Mekong character in the book, Blair was definitely the main character.. Serena was a bit aloof and less warm in the books, like the carefree nature that the show wanted to replicate season 1 but less “caring” for the people around her, no true regret about what happened with Nate. Blair was a great character but she was definitely not a good person, she was self centered and driven.. another unpopular opinion? I think Blair and Dan had more chemistry and way more in common than Dan and Serena ever did.

The scene with Blair telling off Jenny at the end of season 3 was completely warranted IMO. I could care less about being a Jenny stan. On that specific day, she butted into a private relationship that was none of her business and made herself a public enemy for Serena, Dan, AND THEN Blair. She's a sad, sick person and essentially had no redeeming qualities by the end of the season unlike any other character.
