- Welcome to our authentic Bulgarian Village…stuck in the past. Today we will tour this tiny Balkan farm and see what life was like 200 years ago!
ABOUT ME:
My name is Laurie and I swapped city life (Manhattan, New York) for a simple life in a semi-abandoned village (Село) in the Balkan Mountains (Eastern Europe).
I literally woke up one morning and realized NYC wasn’t for me. I booked a ticket (the same day!), packed a little suitcase, and moved to my beloved teeny-tiny Bulgarian farm… lost in time. And when I say lost in time I mean LOST-IN-TIME. No time-crunching jobs, no watching the clock, hardly any internet service at all, really. Imagine a village from the Middle Ages… that’s pretty much what you get here. And I’m loving every second of it!
I went from living in a city of 8 million to living on an old, historic farm… population: under 40. From skyscrapers to crumbling abandoned houses. From fast food takeout to barrel grill cooking. The advantages of village life are endless…
Update: My boyfriend and I have saved up and begun renovating our abandoned ancestral homestead (farmhouse). It hasn’t been easy but definitely interesting and extremely rewarding. There is nothing better than farming, harvesting and foraging for our own food… and keeping tradition alive. 🌱

Събудих се една сутрин и осъзнах, че Ню Йорк не е за мен. Купих си билет (същият ден!), стегнах си малкото куфарче, и се завърнах в България… в бащиното ми селце, там, където животът е спрял, и там, където разбираш кои неща наистина имат смисъл! Забравих какво е стрес, напрежение и нареждане на деня спрямо часовника! Часовник, какво е това? За да ползваш телефона си, отиваш до специално място, където има обхват, и така говориш! Чувстваш се така, сякаш живееш в годините от Възрожденския ни период! Обожавам и ценя всеки миг, прекаран тук!
Всички се чудят не е ли трудно да живееш в село с по-малко от 40 души, отчитайки, че идвам от град с 8 милиона жители! От небостъргачи до рушащи се изоставени къщи…От доставки на бързи храни до готвене на жар и весели чевермета! Предимствата да живееш на село са безкрайни... На първо място трябва да осъзнаеш какво дава то на душата ти, защото тя е най-важна! След това да забравиш за клишето, че няма реализация!
В момента: Моят приятел и аз обновихме изоставената къща на предците ни! Пригодихме я така, че да не ни липсва каквото и да е удобство! Не беше лесно, но определено интересно и изключително възнаграждаващо. Няма нищо по-добро от земеделието, отглеждането и търсенето на собствена храна... и поддържането на традицията жива. 🌱

I very much enjoy the sound of Bulgarian Bagpipes (I believe they are called "Kabá Gájda"). Have you ever considered including traditional Bulgarian music in your videos?
I'm very interested in foreign (to me) cultures and I feel that local, traditional music is a big part of culture.
So many countries have a rich culture and it seems such a shame to not include local music in videos about those countries. I noticed that you were wearing traditional clothing in the videos about the church. Is it not possible to obtain traditional Bulgarian music on UA-cam?
HOW I WISH!! .. Bulgarian music is incredible and so so beautiful. I ALWAYS want to include Bulgarian music in my videos but there are strict copyright rules and I don’t know how to gain permission. I actually have to sift through each video and mute all the clips where there is Bulgarian music in the background 😔 It’s such a shame because half of the energy and life of the clip is in the music… not to mention our parties and traditional dancing. I have to keep researching how to get permission to use music.

I've had the pleasure of a quick visit to Northern Bulgaria ( South of Ruse and around Tarnovo ) fascinating area, with interesting people and, I love a good healthy Bulgarian Red Wine 😉. How amazing! If you like wine try “Melnik Wine”. We make our own wine so I’m not sure how true it is but everyone says Melnik wine is one of the best. I was just there yesterday actually 😃 🍷

Bulgaria’s population is very low.. only about 6.5 million. We used to be 8 million not long ago but sadly many people are moving abroad because the salaries here are very low.

Sadly many villages in Bulgaria have become completely abandoned and lost 😞. Luckily there is hope for our village. More and more descendants have been returning and renovating their family homes! We have 4 houses being renovated in our village at this very moment (including ours) 😃🌞🌻

It certainly is! We have been waiting all year for summer so that we can finally enjoy the river (or what exists of it). This year has been very dry but we are making the best of it.
Yes! She is responsible for organizing events ranging from elections to funerals. She also oversees the cleanliness of the region and is responsive for all three villages nearby. I have to say, she is a force of nature and truly cares about our village ❤️🥰🌻

this is so awesome i cannot see why people want to come to U.S.. nothing is good like this in USA NOTHING.. There in the USA.. IT IS all greed and wanting. Especially the politics....this is quaint, charming, full of love, life, and peace. Wish i was there my experience in engineering design and building OMG this would be heaven for me. You made one of the smartest decisions ever moving from the U.S. to Bulgaria. Sure there isn't much where you are at... but the charm and laid back life is the best.
I couldn’t agree more. NYC used to be a nice place to live when I was little but everything changed for the worse unfortunately. I find myself very happy with a simpler life ❤️

Great question regarding the houses. Sadly, most people living in such small villages are very old and cannot care for their homes. The younger owners don’t visit as often but also don’t want to sell their houses. I think they have plans to one day return but our economy is very bad so people are forced to live and work in big cities.

It’s very exciting that you crossed Bulgaria! I will be honest… Bulgaria, as a country currently, is not perfect. Not everyone who comes here loves it. I’m from here and it’s in my blood so I love it but I can see how a foreigner might not have the best experiences all the time.

Unfortunately there aren’t any houses for sale right now. After reading your comment I went down to the mayor’s house to check if there is any hearsay about a family thinking to sell. There is one house that burned down (only the walls remain) and I thought maybe there is a chance they would want to sell but there are descendants who wish to inherit the house in hopes to repair it.
It’s unfortunate that so many houses are left crumbling because people don’t have the funds to repair them… but at the same time it’s very touching that they feel so connected to their ancestral homes. I will keep my ears open and if word comes up of someone selling I will be sure to message you! 🌞🌻🌺
