  • “Zdraveite!”- Hello Everyone!
I am so excited because in today’s episode I will show you what an average day on the farm looks like! Grazing sheep 🐑 , feeding chickens 🐓, fighting with a very stubborn donkey, tending to our crops and catching frogs by the river 🐸. Enjoy!
    🌱 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
    ABOUT ME:
    Hi guys!
My name is Laurie and I dropped city life (Manhattan, New York) for a simple farm life. I literally woke up one morning and realized NYC wasn’t for me. I booked a ticket (the same day), packed a little suitcase and moved to a teeny-tiny Bulgarian village- lost in time. And when I say lost in time I mean lost-in-time. No time crunching jobs, no watching the clock, hardly any internet service at all really. Imagine a village from the Middle Ages… that’s pretty much what you get here. And I’m loving every second of it!

I like the way how you show what daily life can be like in a country where material gains are out of reach for many , particularly in more remote rural areas.
I have been visiting Bulgaria for 5 years in a row now and travelling from Scotland on my motorcycle, this summer I will be there again, but will stay for 5 weeks to help out running a Moto Camping site near Sevlievo.
And I have definitely fallen in love with Bulgaria 😊

Thank you so much for watching Mike! It makes me really happy you enjoyed 😊!! You actually bring up a really interesting point.. not being able to reach material gains might actually be a blessing in disguise. While everyone is off fighting for “stuff”, some of the happiest people are away from it all living peacefully. 🌱
Oh wow, that so exciting! How long does it take to get from Scotland to Bulgaria on a motorcycle? I got a motorcycle license the moment I was of age but my mom never let me get a motorcycle haha. I used to drive my ex-boyfriend’s motorcycle in NYC and a friend’s dirt bike on the farm. I’m still not past wanting a motorcycle and keep telling myself I will get one now that I have so much open space do drive it. 😃

Watching that evening sunlight with the sheep grazing, I can't help feeling that mankind was intended to exist within the cycles of nature, not in the modern stress of the city.
I believe that is why these channels about rural living are so popular. People hate the stress of modern life and want to return to a simpler existence.

    • @sistersofbulgaria9396

I couldn’t agree more that city life (as we know it today) is just not natural. When I go to visit my mom and sister in NYC, the first 10 days I feel calm.. but it doesn’t take long for me to go crazy. Too noise, too crowded, too money oriented and just.. not for me.

Another wonderful video! Thank you. I grew up on a farm in the rural Midwest (U.S. Great Lakes region). Gathering the eggs was my job. On the plus side: It was kind of like an Easter egg hunt. Negative: The chickens pecking at you while you gather the eggs and the strong amonia (and worse!) odor. 😅 We herded over 300 cows. But the garden was the best part. A lot of work, but beautiful, and better than anything you could buy in the store. We had many "Bubbies" as well, who were the center of the rural community, wearing the traditional headscarfs as they visited in town. Peace be with you friend. 🐔🐄🍅🥒🥚🌻🥀

Oh wow! What an interesting and beautiful life you had growing up! Gathering eggs in the morning is one of my favorite things to do out here. It is exactly like what you said- an Easter egg hunt 🐣 🥚 🌸. 300 cows.. wow!! The most cows I remember seeing in our village when I was little were about 15. Sadly, most people living here permanently are too old to take care of cows. Goat and sheep milk is what most people drink but there is also a lady in the neighboring village that has cows and sometimes sells cow milk. 🐄 🥛
Bubbies! Never heard of them but I will see if I can learn some more online- they sound so interesting. Thank you so much for watching and commenting John! Best wishes to you and your family!! 😊🌱🥚🌸🐣

@@sistersofbulgaria9396 down under, in NZ. Not far from Australia. I grow the strawberries that i grow here inside of the black plastic "stackable" bins,. The bins like ones that can be with sourced in bulk from the large hardware stores at the shopping center.I then i drill holes up off the bottom, like say a couple of inches up off the bottom, all the way around the bin, to act for drainage. And then any of the excess water drains right down and sits in the very bottom of the bin, each time you water the plants. Acting like a water reservoir down in the bottom below where the drain holes are. Keeps the plants well watered for longer that way in between watering.I don't need to be watering so often.I find its easier for me to manage them this way. I can easily water feed them too, with seaweed fert and whatever else. They will finish fruiting completely by the end of this month. So slowed down fruiting already now. I had far more than i could eat this year though, so i gave a whole heap away as well to friends. Maybe i'll brew some up, one year soon , and then run it through a pot still. Wonder if it would taste like nice alcohol that way. Anyone tried?. I try to grow more new young plants off of the runners, each year.

I haven’t made a video on how we met just yet because I wasn’t sure anyone would be interested but I’m thinking to because it’s actually pretty interesting, I think 🤔😃. It was actually a bit like Romeo and Juliet. We met as little kids right here on the farm and dated every summer while we were here visiting our grandparents. Our families used to be great friends but then got into a big fight and forbade us from seeing each other.. but we still did in secret 🤫. I'd def. be making goat cheese as is popular in France...saw a couple where husband took 40 goats into hills/mountains while wife prepared cheese.
My neighbor in the 70's did all this on an acre, the pressure cooker always going, and a basement cellar room of the canned items.
Also, you can tap that stream for hydroelectric power, find a downgrade, cut a side channel in bank and use gravity to spin turbine which can be rewired core of a clothes dryer, or just buy the Chinese version.

Oooo I remember my grandpa used to make goat cheese and showed me how to make it a few times. He made Bulgarian cheese which is something like feta but is soft and bouncy when fresh.. and less salty. It was delicious. He also used to make THE BEST yoghurt you will ever taste. Ever since then I just cannot enjoy yoghurt the same way.
How amazing that you know how to create energy for a dryer! I have no experience at all in this but I’m going to show my boyfriend what you said. Just incredible!

Thank you so much ❤️🥰 I’m very happy you enjoyed! We do have power outages from time to time but not long enough to defrost the meat. When they happen we just make sure not open the freezer (very important) so no cold air escapes and the food is fine :)
Why? Do you have a lot of power outages where you are? If you do, I recommend preserving your meat in jars (you just cook the meat and fat before and pack it into the jars, being careful that no air gets in, and boil the jars). They will last all year. This is what people in our village used to do before freezers 😊

@sistersofbulgaria9396 Oh ok,I see.☺️Yes from what we understood is that there was a power outage for a few days in Veliko tarnovo were we bought our property so I thought maybe that happens also at your place maybe.

„Топки“, каза кралицата. Ако имах две, щях да съм крал!" 🤣
Did I see both of your баби? Ah, bread trucks! I'm old enough to remember those here in the US. Twice a week, the Nickel's bakery truck would come around. I used to pester mom to get donuts and creamsticks! LOL If you ever want to know how to make quick, tasty bread, let me know. I can teach you. You can send me the Питка recipe! 😁
I'm glad you're getting the old stories from the баби. It's important to keep that stuff alive. They remember details that will be useful in the future. FYI, most spiders dislike the smell of citrus and peppermint, so if you keep some lemons or oranges around, it'll keep your spider population down a bit. Now you know why баби always have a bowl of ментов бонбон sitting around. Thank you for another fun-filled video!!! продължавай с добрата работа! 👏

Oh! I didn’t know they had bread trucks in America. Honestly, I should have… but all I know of America really is the big Apple 🍎. Iv never really experienced rural life in the US. Omg stop, I’m getting hungryyyy. Donuts and cream sticks!!! When I was back home visiting my mom and sister we ordered 48 donuts and ate them all in 2 DAYS!! Crispy Cream had a nice sale going on 😅😂😅🤣. Yes please tell me the bread recipe! I’m going to send you the питка recipe right under this message. I am still learning and my баба’s make the питка’s for the most part but it’s supposed to be much easier than it seems in writing (I’m not sure I agree with that yet hahah).
Keeping all this alive is one of the most important things in life in my opinion. Otherwise life feels… empty.
I DID NOT KNOW THIS ABOUT SPIDERS!!! I am planting a lemon tree the moment spring hits!!! Maybe then my sister will come for more than 2 nights hahah. We have to do a THOROUGH spider check every time and she somehow manages to find the one baby spider in the corner under the chair in the room that no one ever goes in hahha 😅😂
As always, thanks for this awesome comment and don’t forget to send me the bread recipe!! If you send it on Instagram just let me know bc I am so bad at reading my messages there. Truth is I actually hate Instagram and never scroll through it… but I like to post- go figure 💁🏻‍♀️😅

      It’s my Baba’s secret recipe 😃:
      Take out butter to soften.
Put 1 small cube live yeast (about a tablespoon) in the bowl
Pour a flat teaspoon sugar on top on the yeast.
Pour 1 coffee cup warm water on top and mix until the yeast is soft.
Add Flat Tablespoon Flour and mix again. When you start seeing bubbles add 200 grams warm water.
Add 1 flat teaspoon salt and 1 flat soup spoon sugar.
      Add 1 tablespoon oil
Add 1 teaspoon vinegar so the dough gets stretchy
Add 1 egg white (keep the egg yolk)
      Mix well
Start adding flour little by little (no more than 1/2 kilogram total) until the dough starts separating from the bowl.
Sprinkle flour on a wooden counter. Place dough on top and begin molding. Bang the dough onto the counter 20 times.
Put dough back in bowl, add plastic wrap and cover with towel to keep warm. Place in warm place to rise. After about 1/2 hour it should be twice risen. Take out and split in 6 balls.
Pull each ball to the size of a dinner plate and place on top of each other. Roll them with a rolling pin so they stick to each other. Roll the dough into a roll and cut into pieces about 2 cm tall but depends on your cake pan size: as many as will fit in the center of your baking pan).
Rub butter in your baking dish and sprinkle with flour. Place the dough pieces sideways (like cinnamon buns).
Mix oil and egg yoke and rub on top of the dough. Sprinkle sugar. Can add sesame seeds.
Put in pre-heated oven on very low heat for 30 mins so it continues to rise. Make sure dish is tall! Increase heat to 180 degrees Celsius and bake until golden brown. Then cover with wet HOT water baking paper and keep baking so it stays soft and doesn’t burn on top. Keep baking for 35 mins
Take out and rub with more butter. And cover with towel so crust stays soft. Let sit 15 mins. Flip baking tray and done!

Seeing mushrooms being plucked rather than cut sent me down a lovely internet rabbit hole
    ua-cam.com/video/5tBnNUoVymI/v-deo.html
it doesn't matter for ground growing shrooms, but those on trees are better cut. Trampling is the only real issue - it reduces subsequent years crops by 30%. It all makes sense because the mushroom is the reproductive off-shoot - the strength is underground in the network of mycelium filaments. Humans carrying the shrooms away greatly assists dispersal of the spores, so if you want to create new colonies, wave them around at a desired location 😉
Congratulations on your lamb & potatoes, it looks great!

      Thank you so much Daytona!
To be honest, when I filmed those mushrooms I didn’t realize there was a difference between picking and cutting. I learned from a local who told me to always cut but now that I’m learning that it matters more for tree mushrooms it got me interested. I’m going to do some more research! In the meantime I will follow your advice and wave them around so they keep growing! 🍄🍄🍄
Thank you for the compliment on cooking!! You boosted my cooking confidence!!!👩🏻‍🍳😃
Oooo eggplants are one of my favorite vegetables. My boyfriend’s family loves to fry them like you would zucchini but I prefer them baked into a “mandja” (this is what we call any cooked meals) with ground meat. I think I will make a video just on how to make this “mandja” because it is INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS and something we eat pretty often on the farm. It’s a bit of a process to make but totally worth it. Only thing to always remember whenever cooking eggplant is to first coat them in salt and let them sit for at least an hour. They begin to drip this brown juice which is very bitter and not good to eat. 🍆
