Bob Newhart surprises longtime friend, Don Rickles during HBO's 13th Annual U.S. Comedy Arts Festival, in Aspen, 2007 with director, John Landis. Newhart tells a funny story.
'I read the New York Post. He studies the editorials. I study the sports page. He likes polite discourse. I'm loud. So how the hell have we come to like each other so much? We make each other laugh-that's how. Offstage, I'm Bob Newhart's best audience and he's mine. It helps, of course, that our wives have maintained their close friendship. Bob and I both subscribe to the philosophy that has saved many a marriage: Happy wife, happy life. For some thirty-five years, the Newharts and the Rickleses have taken many happy vacations together. We've traveled the world. I've watched him hide as I've made fun of people in foreign languages I don't understand. He's watched me doze off while he's discussed the world's problems. My problem was finding out if the Dodgers beat the Giants.' (Rickles Book: A Memoir)
The Comedy Festival, formerly known as the US Comedy Arts Festival, was a comedy festival that ran from 1995 to 2008.The festival included stand-up comedy performances, appearances by the casts of television shows, and has a film component called the Film Discovery Program.

Don had said the "secret" to his marriage with Barbara was that " *she didn't laugh at his jokes* ".
"They will never be another one like them" has been overused, but in Bob and Don's it is probably true because they were so different from the "mainstream" in their own time.

I💓 don rickles... Have started watching his work from past 3 year's now. Have become a huge fan since then And watched all the things he was in . On theTonight show, cpo sharky, etc etc.. he's the god of comedy

Don Rickles has been gone for some time, now. These two were friends in every sense of the word and I do wonder how such kindred souls manage to survive the ‘premature’ loss of one or the other. You must watch Bob roasting Don, on here. Magic.

I was fortunate enough to see Don Rickles’ last tour with Regis Philbin at the Wiltern Theater and Bob Newhart sat behind us.
Great to see the friendship and love in between these two legends...and then the host takes the award from Don’s hand without even asking and cross his legs with his shoes almost on Don’s lap... 2 class act and 1 moron.

@@MrRapparicio 2 months late for a response but if it helps, Landis made the documentary "Mr. Warmth: The Don Rickles Project" which celebrated the life and career of Don Rickles; which resulted in Rickles netting 2 Emmys: the only Emmys he got in his television career. So Landis might have been a little bit fresh here, but he did gave Rickles a much greater gift that, in perspective excused him a little bit.

Why is it most of time embarrassing to people to hug or kiss people on the cheek? Don does it.
Yes keep in mind that in his early career, he was often with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and the italian mob, most of who were notorious cheek kissers and touchy feely characters.

Iam sitting here watching and listening to these two,and I had a thought, Could you see these two on Broadway in a revival of the Odd Couple, it would be great standing room only ,these two comedic geniuses together ,that would have been solid gold humor at its finest !!!!

These were talented, fine men and best of friends. I'm not sure why people are exclaiming that they are now reunited again. There is ZERO evidence of that. Just because we want to believe something doesn't make it true. Just remember these men fondly but stop with the fairytale nonsense.
It might be a cultural thing but as an Indian, I feel uncomfortable watching the host sitting with his shoe towards the guests. Here in India, it is considered bad manner to put your shoe towards an elder.

The comedians of Newhart's and Rickles' era were so stylistically different from each other--Berle,Youngman,Dangerfield,Hope,Benny,Burns,Carlin,Joan Rivers,Phyllis Diller,Gleason,Lewis,Gorshin,Little--and the rest,but today,it's a comedic wasteland out there.Colbert and Kimmell tell Trump jokes for 15 minutes.Seth Meyers tells Trump jokes for a half hour.Now if they were funny...but they're not--and constant repetition is one of the reasons.Comics used to have a three joke rule:Don't exceed 3 jokes about one subject.About Trump,they go over that number by 50 easily.Bob is/was a great one.
