My father adored Bob Newhart. When we were little kids, back in the 60s, he used to play his records particularly over Christmas time. I still remember those times with great happiness. In my minds eye, I can still hear my Dad laughing heartily at ‘The Driving Instructor’, the story of how tobacco was introduced and the incompetent submarine commander.

I memorized all of his albums back in the 60s and 70s. Loved the guy...as does the whole world. Humor and Humility mixed together. That's who Bob was to me, and I think maybe a great deal of his fans. Wouldn't it be wonderful if the world was like Bob?!?

Bob Newhart is now 90 years old. I guess he was about 85 when they taped these? There's not even a nick in the blade of his razor-sharp wit. Who can still be this amazing this late in life?
I remember Bob talking about the 'executives' trying to fix his show: "Bob, could you talk a little faster - those pauses slow things down" & "we've decided to add a kid to the show" to which Bob replied "What a wonderful idea - who are you going to get to play Bob". Bob knew his humor, knew what was funny, and knew what he wanted. I grew up listening to him on the radio (plug: CKCK/CK62 from out of Regina); I had insomnia and CK62 had a 2 hour comedy show from like 1:00am to 3:00am. Thanks for the memories.
@GENERAL DISARRAY'S BOSS 83 Ambien which is now a generic. All the doctors say that using it for more than a couple months is bad for you - bullshit, not sleeping for years is BAD for you. I have been using Ambien for almost 30 years - any personality issues are mine and do not belong to the drug.
I never really cared so much for Bobs shows, but watching these interviews with Craig has given me a whole new appreciation for Bob Newhart! He really is funny, fast with the wit, and personable.
Look how in tune they are with the jokes, the subtlety of Craig's little "looks", like when Bob said, "I never thought I'd meet a Queen..." It's great to see!!

Nope. A friend who was a huge fan got tickets to see him live in Toronto around 1988 and she'd barely talk about it the next day. She said he was foul mouthed and had a nasty temperament that wasn't part of the show. He just came across as a total 180 to the sitcoms she watched all the time. This wasn't the Bob Newhart of his TV shows and she was really upset, more than annoyed. She never watched another Newhart show after that.

I was at a bad point in my life -- undiagnosed diabetes, actually no big deal, unless untreated -- and Craig, every night, made life worth living and gave me something to look forward to. The show was always a silly, f*ck it ROMP, but in the interviews, like with Newhart, he had an intuitive skill for finding the best in his guests and drawing it out -- simply by making them feel as at ease as the audience at home. Never saw him "muff" one. Greatness, Craig. Thanks.
The amazing thing about Bob is that if not for a quirk of fate, he would have spent his life as an accountant in Chicago. He just happened to know a guy from college who got into the radio business and when the guy was looking for guest for his show he recalled that Bob was always funny in school. So he invited Bob on his Chicago radio show and the rest is his as they say.
Only Bob Newhart could tell a tell show host I had a cat once with a straight face and have an entire audience laugh at it.. He's still one of the best ever, Meow - RIP.

I went back and watched all his shows from 2005 to his final - I was hiding from the new normal. Then I found the British show QI and watched all 15 years of the their shows.

I had a run in with Mr Newhart, back in 1971 or 72. LA Sports Arena Car Show. My wife and I were looking at a Black Lamborghini Miura, by her side was none other than Bob Newhart. He had the number #1 on TV and no one recognized him but me. He looked at me with, oh no eyes aNd placed a Finger over his lips pleading not to say anything. I lip-synced ok. He did it back , thank you. We just stood there looking the Black Lamborghini. As he walked way still not being recognized I told my wife.
First, Martin Mull.. and then Bob Newhart. We just lost two of the greatest masters of understated comedy of all time. My dad was a young man when Bob’s first albums came out. And he shared those with me, as I enjoyed his first series every week after Mary Tyler Moore. I could go on forever, I’ll just say look up all the Newhart clips you can. And I’d say the same about Mull.. in fact, I do.
I played the Hi Bob drinking game a long long time ago. Loved the show, loved Bob, loved the game you took a shot or a hit everytime someone said Hi Bob. They said Hi Bob a lot on that show. It was a fun time.
Craig isn't intimidated by Bob. They are both having a great time and you can tell Bob is impressed with Craig and sees him as a comedy equal. Very different styles but their humor still meshes.
With that great CBS Saturday night lineup in the early to mid 70's, there was no reason for the other networks to have programming on that night, really.
It's when working with a real pro like Bob that you realize how fast Craig really is. There were some pretty slick interactions here. RIP Bob, I remember when the albums came out, good times.

17:28 - "Rid the world of skeet." This is the funniest stuff I've seen in ages. Ferguson gives plenty of space for Newhart's persona to be front and center and the humor flows naturally. Ferguson was a terrific host who could shift gears depending on the guest; with Newhart he's relaxed, but then with Don Rickles he's quicker and more aggressive.
Bob used to come into my work in Beverly Hills (it was a Staples store) and the first time I met him, I couldn't resist saying "Hi, Bob!". And he said "I wish I could have found a way to get paid every time someone played that game. I would have made more money than I did in television!" Super nice guy and always a quick wit.
I would've loved to see Dean Martin on this show. Am sure Craig and him would have a blast! Saw some Bob Newhart sketches. very nice man. i miss the oldtimers =) The last bit is awesome
the finally of the NEWHART show was the best ending ever. when he woke up in bed next to Suzanne Pleshette, and the new show was all just a dream of his character from the original Bob Newhart show I died laughing. when he was don't telling his wife about the dream and she asked if he was married in the dream and he said yes and she asked if it was to her and bob paused, and said, no I was married to a blond.......funniest TV ever.

A national treasure for sure! RiP Bob! Newhart was a fabulous show! The 3 Daryl’s were hilarious!
I was young watching that show but it was such good clean humor I loved it!
17:28 - "Rid the world of skeet." This is the funniest stuff I've seen in ages. Ferguson gives plenty of space for Newhart's persona to be front and center and the humor flows naturally. Ferguson was a terrific host who could shift gears depending on the guest; with Newhart he's relaxed, but then with Don Rickles he's quicker and more aggressive.

Bob used to come into my work in Beverly Hills (it was a Staples store) and the first time I met him, I couldn't resist saying "Hi, Bob!". And he said "I wish I could have found a way to get paid every time someone played that game. I would have made more money than I did in television!"

the finally of the NEWHART show was the best ending ever. when he woke up in bed next to Suzanne Pleshette, and the new show was all just a dream of his character from the original Bob Newhart show I died laughing. when he was don't telling his wife about the dream and she asked if he was married in the dream and he said yes and she asked if it was to her and bob paused, and said, no I was married to a blond.......funniest TV ever.
That's very clever writing. Breaking Bad had a similar alternate ending in which Heisenberg awoke to find himself as Hal.

Agreed. I can’t think about Newhart without remembering that scene. It was hilarious. I’m sure it stands alone as funny. But, to really appreciate the impact of the final Newhart episode on those of us watching it at the time you need to know why it was so funny, and why it was so widely considered genius. Clue: connection between Newhart finale & Bobby’s return to the TV show Dallas after two years dead. In this case case you really DID have to be there!!” 🤣😲😂!! Thank you for years of laughs Bob Newhart!

Bob newhart was one of the first comedy albums that I ever bought. He was fantastic. I grew up on him, Cosby, Carlin, and Richard Pryor

He was the MASTER of that bit. Perfect timing, the way he allows the audience to create the other side of the conversation, that stutter that implies so much. Pure gold!
