This channel is what UA-cam was made for. It's the true definition of UA-cam. Not any of the new and big channels that are made solely for profit and are loud and obnoxious. This is an honest guy sharing what he loves to an interested audience. If only more people realized this. Great video btw
Some people think they won't use much other than the appliances so I'm really happy to hear someone mention what else they can use , including the very efficient air conditioner and you can buy LEDS for those lights and reuse them. Some like the Shasta even have electric brakes on them, mine did and it was a 73'. Great vid JC!!!
Now that's just great advice Boss.I love your frugal tips I to live the same way always looking for a deal.Ive been laughed at a lot but I'm the one with everything paid for and don't even hold a job just living my dream. Thanks for the video good to see someone with good common sense.
^_^I love these videos and he does have great common sense, though I doubt the swamp creatures here would learn anything, they think they KNOW IT ALL!? LOL
Love the way how you save money by salvaging items! One day soon I'm going to build my own cabin/hunting shack! This video really helped! Keep up the good work! I've been following your channel for a couple of years now and I really enjoy them!
Boss, you are the greatest resource. It always helps to build on the work of those who came before. We're just starting out, post-retirement, and we figure we're good for fifteen years. After that, it's up to the grandchildren. Thanks so much for the advice. You are the boss.
As always Boss a lot of great useful information, love the backwoods logic, nice to see Frankie, best wishes always and thanks for sharing your videos.
I love your videos; your knowledge and willingness to learn is amazing. We are looking for land and will have an empty nester cabin built. I love looking for bargains. I save your videos so I can rewatch them later as references.
sounds like that young couple hit the jackpot with the camper...Good for them and pretty nice of the lady to tell them just to take it...Pretty neat you can take so many things out of the trailor and use them for the cabin...Always good to see you and Frankie...Peace buddy...Take care...
What a wealth of information you possess! Thanks Boss, I'm enjoying watching some of your older videos, gleaning all of your nuggets of gold from your years of experience, learning and growing as a lady with not so much knowledge of such things.
There is nothing wrong with being smart about salvaging things and putting them to good use. Everyone likes good value for dollar and this video shows how a person can achieve this. Thanks for the video JC.
Hi Boss, You are absolutely amazing. I just love your advice and every video you share with us, always good and puts a smile on my face, thank you! Be safe
I cannot believe your timing, spot on. I have been living up on the hill for 2 years with no power or water. The power company would not let me get a temp pole because I had a “mobile home”. The guy that had owned the property and lost it in foreclosure is now living on a lot across the drive. He had an RV, No sewage system, no water he got a temp pole. He ran a power line and a water line from the temp pole to an old well on someone else’s property and has been using a cesspool for the last 10 years. They should hang a sign on the Court House Door: “Government, Logic Not Permitted”. I had to buy a trailer to get a temp pole to make repairs. I am now starting to plan the garage. I have been trying to plan for the costs of the gas appliances and then saw your “How to Outfit a Cabin on the Cheap.” You mentioned the gas refrigerator and I stopped my writing and looked at the refrigerator in the trailer. As I said your timing was spot on. I saw one of your episodes where you were talking about some poor sole that had nothing better to do with his life than gripe at you for living a life you love. God Help Him. You have given out information, guidance, and of course smiles. Thank you and God Bless.
Oh lorrrrd! Can't wait to see what YOU of all people come up with for a "camper" !!!! Don't take too long ! I'm old!!!! and I wanna see it !!! LOL before I croak !!! Your "design sense" is always soooooo kewl !!!!! I hoping it looks like a little rolling version of a backwoods cabin!!! Yee haw!!!!
Flop the sink and stove and my '78 skylark is the same layout just everything was as done cheap as possible. Love the way the bed is set up with the windows its like sleeping in a screen porch.
Great video JC and yes you can get those campers real cheap I have my eye on a couple of them now just to put them on the property so the kids have somewhere to stay when they come up and visit
Thanks for all the great ideas. I have to tell my brother he was right. I should have purchased a pickup camper a while back just to salvage windows, generator, gas stove, heater and refrigerator. Will start looking again.
I myself have directed people to old travel trailers for parts like you have. I tell you, it does make sense. Why go out and buy new, recycle, repurpose and reuse. I dont know why people nowadays think too hard about things. Keep it simple. Great Job, Boss!!!
Love this. I have been living this way for 15 yrs so far. I'm moving into a camper I bought last fall and good to know the value of everything in it. And...I have an old camper on my property that has a fridge and a stove and maybe the furnace. Going to check it out now. Thanks! Great to meet you and loving your videos.
Oh yeah. THAT'S way to go. GREAT deals ARE out there. I have a tenant on my place that is an INCREDIBLE 'scrounger'. We have a motorhome, a 5th wheel, an overhead camper, and FIVE bumper pull camper/trailers. He just has that special personality that works cheap deals for everyone involved. His latest find was 17 full grown sheep for FREE just for catching them and hauling them away. They were so wild and woolly, they for ZERO fun to catch and transport but, after we sheared and wormed them, we were able to sell most for enough to equal a months pay.
I just saw this. I would never have thought of this. Thank you. I have a mountain cabin in New Mexico I am moving to for full time. It will need renovations. Love your ideas and tips.
Always interesting your vidéo,i love it and have and old 73' camper to and we have a lot of fun in summer with our dogs!! continued your good job!! from Québec Canada
You and Lamar from "solarcabin" channel have done a great service for the offgrid community by sharing common sense advice like this. One of the biggest things that turns people off from building a "tiny house" or offgrid cabin is the cost for things like appliances, or even the trailer to build a Tiny House on. They see the price for some of these new Tiny House builds and are dismayed by the sticker shock. I don't blame them. But, if people are willing to use old appliances out of an RV/camper, or salvage a trailer from an old camper, then they've already saved thousands of dollars. It's really great that you are sharing information that lets people see how affordable doing something like this really is (if people are just willing to reuse something that might otherwise go to waste).
Great info boss! I like your kind attitude! Thanks for your good advice! You are skilled and knowledgeable and know how to tell what is in good condition and what can be fixed! My fav dog is the magnificent border collie! God bless you, nice to have found you!
Always love your videos, but really liked this one. Super practical, and something I'd never thought of myself. I'm leery of software from old campers; seen too many riddled with rodents, but hardware like appliances, plumbing, wiring, etc. is a great idea! And if you do it right you get a nice trailer underneath. Thanks for sharing!
Great video. I didn't think about using the parts. I have another rv that has front end damage and leaky roof . I kept thinking about renovating it. But now with this video, you have given me great ideas. Thanks.
You are a star! Refrigerator/freezers are really expensive here as they're usually aimed at boats. I am going to have a look at RVs and similar. ..I would never have thought of that...your icebox is still the best bit of advice I got! Point me at the used campers!
Excellent advice. I've been looking at old campers for awhile. My big complaint is the poor build quality of most. I know I could re-purpose the equipment & build a better one, so I look forward to seeing your home built one. Thanks
Wow! Home-made camper project?! That's what I'm wanting to do and on my property is pretty much the exact same Shasta camper as you have there. It never occurred to me to use the items from the old Shasta in my upcoming home-made camper project. Only difference between me and you is you can do the labor yourself and by the time I pay someone to take my old camper apart, it may not be as cost effective. Great video
Watch out J C. Frankie might take over the computer and get lost in the Pokemon world. Great tips. Can't wait to see more on VT cabin. Shakes were looking Awesome !!!!!!! . Every thing you build always dose and I love your attention to the small details. God Bless.
ANOTHER AMAZING VIDEO!!! I've been asking a local guy about different items from a camper but he's dragging his feet because of what each item costs separately to make more. I think I'll take your advice and just buy the whole thing.Boss just want you to know that your video's are the best on UA-cam!!!! Can't wait to see your new build coming up!Thanks so Much for sharing your knowledge!!!
Thanks Dave. I hope you'll share my channel with others as well. Gutting these campers are a bit of work but well worth the effort man. So many treasures in them.Good luck with your project.
As usual another great and informative video Boss. I got a Motor home for free with a lot of great appliances and other things when I moved to my property (every thing worked). It is a little less advantageous to cannibalize as the carcass is so large, but" if it is free it is for me ". I found an old quote the other day from Colin Fletcher that kind of sums up your lifestyle in a nutshell; " Beware of the man who spends a lot of time on his own. He may make something of his life." Thanks
You're right JC, there's so much bad and sad in the world it's a great feeling to be able to add something in the plus column by helping someone achieve their goals. I think that's what your channel is actually about. You've helped lots of folks with your practical and useful advice but frankly even if it's just to inspire their dreams or, in my case, let them smile at Frankie's antics, it's all good like they say. I've got a Fleetwood double axle travel trailer myself and I've spent a fortune fixing her up (cuz I'm not super handy like you dang it!). I did the remodeling on the inside, painted and prettified to suit me and it'd prolly kill me to gut her! If I find some land I'm gonna build something over and around her and like as not be buried in her too boot. And don't you criticize Frankie's music selection! I thought it was quite the toe tapper! ;-)
Frankie aced that scene on the very first take. It was funny as hell filming that cause when I sat him in the chair he actually hit the keyboard and a different song started playing. I have such a riot with this dog. Lots of laughs everyday. Thanks for sending that story in the mail. I enjoyed that.
Great video! You could strip a camper for needs, sell what you dont need. The frame of the trailer would often sell for as much (often more) than you pay for scrap camper, let alone the appliances!
Those old campers are gold mines. There was a dilapidated 17' Serro Scotty behind the barn when I bought this place. I sold all the "Scotty" emblems, wheel covers, fiberglass front window cover, rear windows some screens, lights, hinges, moldings, and latches. Used a couple of the jalousied crank-out windows in my chicken coop, kept the range/oven, hood, furnace, and am pulling out wiring, breaker box, and copper tubing. Still more parts to sell, then scrap whatever aluminum siding I can't use, and keep the chassis for a trailer. Oh, and it came with two propane tanks. :)
I've been thoroughly enjoying your channel. I just found it recently and I've been catching up on all your videos. It's great seeing someone doing the off grid thing here in New England. I'm in CT. This episode especially ticked me. I'm very into teardrop trailers and vintage campers and have restored one myself and have a 2nd one waiting in the wings for my attention. While part of me cringed when you said you were tearing apart the Shasta and had already been pulling from the Kit, I got a whole new perspective on things with regard to things that could be used for a cabin. It made it less painful to hear that the trailers were being cannibalized knowing that they were going to go to such good use. When you're done pulling things out that you want to use in the cabin, don't junk all the rest too quickly. There are a number of other things that I noticed on those trailers that you could sell that would be desired by folks that are into vintage campers. Sometimes vintage replacement parts can be tough to come by. Feel free to message me if you'd like some suggestions for some of the things that could be worth selling on e-bay or similar. I'm looking forward to seeing what your plans are for your home built. Thanks for all the great content you put out! ~ All the best. Theresa
Hi Theresa, Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I figured I would get the "cringe" reaction from restorers like yourself. I haven't started on the Shasta yet but I'll make good use of the shells when I'm finished. Thanks for your suggestions on the replacement parts. I may pick your brain in the future. All the best.. JC
A lot of very good information. I think I will keep my eye open for an old camper. Could definitely use the bits and pieces for our future cabin. Thanks for sharing such good information. Still loving the water filter! God Bless!
Thanks for the info 👍. Never realized how much you can part out from an old camper trailer. The steel frame alone is probably worth a grand. Bet you easily have $2,500 in usable material sitting on there. Great buy for $400!! God bless you and yours, Jim 😃
thebossoftheswamp what is your opinion about several states making it illegal to live off grid? I believe Florida and Colorado are two of the most recent states to pass such legislation.
Awesome info Boss!!! another great video!!! I luv ole campers...they just need to be stored under a pole barn type shed and they last forever!!!! As long as they stay dry!!! I have a little 1971 Scotty camper i bought at a yard sale for 100 dollar bill:) Headed from the deep south to Maine camp tomorrow/ truck is packed!!!! .....in search of seafood and cooler weather:)))))))))))
Living on the Gulf coast on the Texas-Louisiana line, since Katrina (which hit Louisiana and Ol' Miss worse), we were hit even harder with hurricane Rita and Ike right after Katrina (though not as media heavy as the 9th Ward for obviously political reasons). Over the last decade, I've seen FEMA and RV parks spring up in every nook and cranny as people flocked to buy one for evacuation/recreational purposes. Prices soared! In recent years, while still strong, it has somewhat leveled and the market it busy. I'm just now looking for my homestead property, and know the active camper market holds opportunity when the time comes. Thanks for the updates!
It's always nice to help someone out if you can. The power cable in the 2nd trailer is for 30 amp service and when it was hooked up in the trailer it was likely hooked to a converter/charger which would supply 110V power to the trailer when hooked to shore power and keep the 12v battery charged.for your 12v systems. The other item you had is known as a 30 amp to 110v adapter known in the RV world as a dog bone. allowing you to hook to a 110v outlet when 30amp outlet is not available. Pass on to your friends that when installind there frigd that plum and level is x-tremely critical to the cooling cycle. The slightest out of level will cause poor cooling. And on that note it's time for a nitecap, Cheers J C and Hi Frankie.

Thank you Joey. I appreciate your kind words.
I love coming back years later and rewatching.
I tend to think of myself as frugal and an upcycler but this never crossed my mind thanks!!!
Some people think they won't use much other than the appliances so I'm really happy to hear someone mention what else they can use , including the very efficient air conditioner and you can buy LEDS for those lights and reuse them. That little Shasta has electric brakes on it too. So many goodies to use :-))

Sounds like you've got it going on my friend. I could never live the life I have if I had a bunch of payments. Cheers :-)
Me, either. Thanks
The less I spend, the less I have to earn. Good luck with your cabin.
Again rewatching these older videos is fun, and there is usually something in the video I didn't catch before.
My 14 year old son and I always enjoy watching your videos. Thanks so much for sharing!!
Happy to hear that. Thank you

A little ambition and "backwoods logic" goes along way. Thanks for sharing your journey with us!
Agreed :-)
And glad you could help that young couple. I know it's a good feeling to help them live their dream together.
Good feeling indeed :-)
Awesome information bossman. Really like how you think.
sounds like that young couple hit the jackpot with the camper...Good for them and pretty nice of the lady to tell them just to take it...Pretty neat you can take so many things out of the trailor and use them for the cabin...Always good to see you and Frankie...Peace buddy...Take care...
These old campers can be a gold mine buddy. Fun to rip apart too. Always god to hear from you my friend.
Excellent advice. Well worth applying. Thank you for sharing it is much appreciated. You have a heart of gold. Great pick Frankie. Take care.
Thank you Pam :-D
Great video Boss. Got some of that stuff stashed away myself. Very informative and helpful for those planning an off grid cabin.
These old campers are a gold mine. They're a bit of work taking them apart but well worth it.
Your awesome. I'm 65 years old and been debating on going off grid. You've helped me to decide to go for it.
Live Now Mike :-)
Hi Boss,
You are absolutely amazing. I just love your advice and every video you share with us, always good and puts a smile on my face, thank you! Be safe
Smiling is a good thing Karey. Life is good :-D
thebossoftheswamp Yes it is, Have a great day Boss. :)
(And you to Frankie)
Thank you for your kind words as they are much needed today. God Bless
Yee haw!!!!
I think you'll enjoy this project :-))
Flop the sink and stove and my '78 skylark is the same layout just everything was as done cheap as possible. Love the way the bed is set up with the windows its like sleeping in a screen porch.
I gotta catch up on some of your past videos. Great to go along for the journey with you. What a deal you got for $400.
Great video JC and yes you can get those campers real cheap I have my eye on a couple of them now just to put them on the property so the kids have somewhere to stay when they come up and visit

Lots of campers for sale out there. Lots of goodies for salvage.
Yep, we out fitted a cabin with old camper parts and saved a boat load of money. We had a lot of fun at that camp on the cheap. great advise boss.
Cheap is good :-))
God Bless my friend.
Thank you and blessings to you as well.
I just stumbled on your channel. You have integrity-Thank you for the FREAH AIR!
Thank you Bruce and welcome to my channel.
Been watching some of your videos and you habe given me tons of ideas.

Thanks for the ideas. This is another helpful video. You make me think that even I could do some of these things. Great great stuff!!

Ah C'mon Bonnie. Ripping and tearing a camper apart is fun. Get a few tools and a 6 pack and go for it :-)
Bonnie Robertson yes it will be worth it, BUT DON'T BE CHEAP, find a person that knows what they are doing before you hire them.
Looking forward to seeing more of the camper project. Watch out for the nesting critters.
Been zapping the wasp all day :-o
Glad you got lucky. All the old travel trailers I've bot had nothing but problems with the appliances!
Very good advice! Loved that Frankie at the computer...what a hoot! Blessings!!!!

Still more parts to sell, then scrap whatever aluminum siding I can't use, and keep the chassis for a trailer. Oh, and it came with two propane tanks. :)
Gotta love it :-D
thanks jc, really valuable info. im just discovering the joys of recycling myself. its a really great use of older stuff.
It's fun too. Just finished gutting that red camper yesterday. It will be my next fur shed when I'm done.
JC
So glad they had good luck.
Yaaaaa great vid. And ya said. It. Not sure why but it brings a smile to my face. Thank you.
LOL :-D Smiling is a good thing.
Hey Boss another great vid with useful info .... Keep em comin and thanks for sharing !
Thanks buddy. More on the way.
A lot of very good information. I think I will keep my eye open for an old camper. Could definitely use the bits and pieces for our future cabin. Thanks for sharing such good information. Still loving the water filter! God Bless!
I finished gutting the red camper today. Going to use the shell as a shed now. Good luck with your camper hunt and God Bless.
Thanks!
Appliances and some other stuff and a nice flat bed trailer to boot major score.
The gas fridge is running in my cabin now and running perfectly :-)
I use a Gas refrigerator I got out of an old RV. I've never had colder beer.
I’ve heard of people using fridges from 50-60 years ago because they kept the beer 🍺 colder lol.
Some great ideas! Savin $ is always good!
Yessah :-)
Thanks for the info 👍. Never realized how much you can part out from an old camper trailer. The steel frame alone is probably worth a grand. Bet you easily have $2,500 in usable material sitting on there. Great buy for $400!! God bless you and yours, Jim 😃
This is a great idea for a houseboat, as well. Thanks for the ideas!
Absolutely :-)
Great video Boss you shared some great ideas keep up the good work
Thank you Bud. I appreciate all your views and comments.

Yep! Good advice. Thanks for sharing Boss.
You're welcome :-)
thebossoftheswamp what is your opinion about several states making it illegal to live off grid? I believe Florida and Colorado are two of the most recent states to pass such legislation.
The Tiny Homes could use all of that stuff! Smart Man! Great Video! thanks JC!
And it's going in my tiny cabin and tiny workshop. Yessah :-))

Just gutted the red camper and I'm turning it into a fur shed now. I won't get taxed on it cause it's not a structure. Yessah :-)
Outstanding Boss!
Thanks for sharing Boss, looking forward to seeing that camper you're building.
Going to be a really cool project. I'm still collecting stuff for it.
Awesome info Boss!!! another great video!!! I luv ole campers...they just need to be stored under a pole barn type shed and they last forever!!!! As long as they stay dry!!! I have a little 1971 Scotty camper i bought at a yard sale for 100 dollar bill:)

You are fantastic. Prayers to you.
Thank you and prayers to you as well.
Out here you can find old gems for a few hundred buck and often free. For a do it yourselfer, they can be a gold mine.
Great Video JC. That is what I did for my cabin and it worked out great.
Good job buddy. Gotta love it.
I sense a piece of artwork from the picture of the dog at the computer.
Yeah that’s Awesome you are a great person bro love your videos.... Thank you God Bless you my brother
GREAT INFO buddy. Thanks for sharing that. I won't tell Frankie's that adapter is called a dog bone. :-x Cheers :-)
