    MOST FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
    Q: How do you have internet at your cabins? A: I have cell service at both cabins but it is spotty due to foliage and cloud cover. I can access the internet from my cabins but have to drive to a local wifi location to upload videos.
    Q: How old is Frankie? A: Frankie will be 10 in April of 2018
    Q: What video editing software do I use? A: Presently, all I use is Windows Live Movie maker but I’m considering trying imovie, Adobe Elements or SONY VEGAS PRO.
    Q: How do you get your water? Did you dig a well? A: Presently, I haul water to the NY cabin but at the NH cabin, I drop a kettle into an old well that was dug by hand by the settlers in the 1700’s.
    Q:What is your favorite brand of cast iron cookware? A: I prefer using vintage cast iron. My favorites are BSR and Griswold. If I had to buy new I would buy a Lodge Brand. I plan to purchase this dutch oven in the future:
    Q: What do you use for refrigeration? A: We have a small gas refrigerator that we salvaged from an old Shasta camper and a custom icebox that I built into the cabin wall. We make ice on site with a propane freezer.
    Video of icebox:
    Video of Gas Refrigerator:
    Propane Freezer:
    Q: What do you use for cooking and heating? A: We use a Kitchen Queen 380 for cooking and heating during the winter months but we also have an antique gas stove in the cabin for when we don't need the heat from the KQ.

    Boss, it’s always a pleasure when I come across a video of yours that I have yet to see. My friend, you have created a wonderful and beautiful life for yourself and yours. You’re such an inspiration to us all. You have definitely motivated me to pursue my dreams of living in the woods. I can’t wait to tell you about it. It’s gonna be a challenge, but that’s when I’m at my best. The screen house you built is beautiful. Even better with skirting around the legal nonsense. My friend, God bless you and yours! It would be an honor to meet you!

    The refuge for the deer is one of our driving forces for buying the extra bit. I just knew that you were good with animals (your dog obviously loves you to death and even your chickens really seemed to like you) I'm really happy I found your channel because you even worry about your trees like we do. I wish you the very best in all you do as the world would be so much better with more people like you.

    Amazing how many people with so much i.e cell phones, big screen tv, 2 story house, pool ect could be so unhappy while guys like boss live very simply and feel 100% content and thankful for what they have. This is the America i want back!

      I wish it was the pretty picture you painted but... It's flat terrain here and sound travels far and wide. I don't have the quiet contentment that I should have with this much acreage. Aside from that, it's not a bad place to live.

    Really Really Beautiful!!! JC your vision on life is Incredible, it has pushed me to reevaluate what's important in my life and to start figuring out what is stagnant and I have begun to get rid of what I don't need!!! Thanks for the great videos and please keep posting as often as you can as I truly look forward to the next one, Kevin.

      Hi Kevin, Funny you mentioned "stagnant" because I talked on that subject in this vid but deleted that footage. I try to keep the vids under 12 minutes so my rant on being stagnant will emerge in a future vid ha ha. Happy to hear my vids have encouraged folks into reevaluation. I will elaborate on this topic in another vid. I can speak volumes on the topic of life and finances.
      All the best my friend.

Utilitarian lifestyle is the goal. Would you live at the cabin? if so, would you drive a well and bring in power, or just have it at the shop?

    You've done well my friend. I really admire you.
    I'd have to have a hammock in that screen house - my Ellie loves swinging in my hammock with me - I bet Frankie would too!
    It's comforting to live in harmony with nature. That's something the yuppies and the anti's will never experience. They will never experience the peace and fulfillment that comes with living in harmony with nature, playing our role, taking what we need to survive and offering sanctuary and refuge so that the circle of life can continue.
    Enjoy the summer my friend - it's in the high 90's here with 80% humidity. Every summer I swear I'm going to start digging into the side of a mountain to stay cool.

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  10 років тому

      Good to hear from you buddy. I wouldn't be able to handle the heat and humidity down there. I put broken ribs through my left lung a while back and the scar tissue doesn't allow that lung to expend like the other one. Humidity is tough on me. I do intend to come to Alabama this winter though. I'd really like to hook up with you when down there. All the best.

    Have been watching your show for some time, I have learned so much from your videos. I especially liked the one on canning chicken, ibought some whole fryers and im going to try your version. Would like to see some on making jelly or jam if you are up to that. I have trouble getting my jelly to set. I followed the sure jell packs to the letter,but so far I haven't had much success. Could you do some videos on making jelly? I also enjoyed the dutch ovens series. I down loadedall of your series on everything, and made them my favorites. I'm planni g to move to mountana in a couple of years, hope you can do some videos on skinning deer. I and my partner will be living off grid. Would also like it if you could show how to do solar pannels. Thanks from the dragon lady

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  9 років тому

      Hello Linda, I already posted a video on skinning and processing your own deer. It's here under my "videos" tab.
      I'm not much of a jelly eater but if I ever make some I'll do a vid too and when I install my solar at the cabin I'll be video taping the process.
      Good luck with your chicken and Merry Christmas to you.

    I am casual now which helps as transit is a sweat shop. Today as example a horrible neck ache so not going in this afternoon. At least I get to Mexico every year several times which we hate the flight but love all inclusive. My struggle is birds & dogs as I need a person that can tend worldclass racing pigeons & we will never put our old dogs in boarding. Mom always said a man can only stand on a square ft at one time. My wife is a homebody & I am a dreamer so we are also unsure of retirement decisions.

    Good morning Boss, such a great little spot to sit and enjoy your life. It is calming and reflective watching the deer here too. We had a little family of raccoon's living in a hole on the adjacent 5 acre's but they never gave me a moments problems. They kept the fallen oranges on the property cleaned up and gave me many days of quiet giggles watching the little ones roll and run around. I too am slowly ridding myself of all these things that I feel I'm tethered to. The decision wasn't hard to make, it's the letting go. What did Carlin have to say, we buy a box to put stuff in and then need a bigger box for more stuff. lol Life is easier when we are older not to have to babysit the stuff. lol Thanks for the tour, it's a bit of a dream place isn't it? Looks like a magazine cover really. ATB Louise

    Thank you for answering my comment and I hope.that you have a merry christmas to.and a prosperous new year. We live in tn. On a mt. Yop, but want to move to the flat lands, so tired of the trek to town its like 60 miles, sowhen we go we make a day of it. Haven't heard you mention a wife?or do you enjoy the batchlor life? When you cooked the ham in the dutch oven was the peppers soggy? I also cook on a wood burning stove but its not like yours. But I have learned from you how to care for all my iron ware. I also heat with wood, it heats our home we built real well. Am fixing to watch the series on your road to your cabin, couldn't you put wood shavings down to help the ground abbsorb the mud? Then put your limbs and dead stuff on top of it? Maybe that would help, thanks again friend

    Nice property Boss . Like the way the deer are so comfortable on your property . I used to hunt deer a few years ago but now a days I just can't bring myself to dispatch them any more . Absolutely nothing wrong with a man hunting deer to put some meat in the freezer . I had the buck lined up in my scope and I just couldn't pull that trigger . I guess I'm weird . Question . How did you hide the shingle nails . I don't see any in the ceiling . Take care .

    Screen house inspired idea I like very much the way your practical mind works, it takes me back a few vid. to your towel rail design when you stated that you had measured your towels at home so they could dry unfolded such simple but thought full idea, we have a heated towel rail fitted by a previous owner must by $250+ can you fit a towel on it can you hell to narrow and to tight between the rails keeps one side of the bathroom nice and warm though. love both your places but prefer the new one not quite so polished and more to do...

I do enjoy a few of the advances in technology, power tools, digital photography, SD cards, the internet and wireless communications, but I have little use for the rest of it. I can't stand all the electronics they put into vehicles and always have problems because of them. Except for some LED lights and my laptop, my NH cabin will be furnished like the 1930's. I'll wake up on Walton's mountain every morning. Life will be getting pretty interesting real soon here. Thanks for commenting.

And the Chiminea is great... I see you shop at "The Sportsman Guide" I have the same one and that's where I bought mine. And I burn my wood scraps in it also. And cook my steaqks in it too!!! LOL!!! As a late comer to your channel, I’ve been watching older videos to kind of “catch up.” I was kinda sad to see you sell this place although I totally understand why you did. Wicked nice property. (To use your native New England slang,) I like the place in New Hampshire as well. That’s such a beautiful state! I miss going there when my friend Jim was still alive, we used to go up there twice a year. Once in the summer and then in the fall. Never been there in the winter though. Would like to experience that some day. We used to spend time in Franconia, Pittsburgh, and Colebrook. Miss my friend, miss that state. Nice people there.

    Nice screen house! Just the right size, the fire place adds a cozy comfortable feeling I really like. I've got a question for you. You mentioned that you cut and milled the trees yourself for some of your buildings. did you use a chain saw mill? or do you have a big saw mill? I'm watching this "Wranglerstar" Timber Framing vidio and wondered about your set up? Have you ever tried timber framing? Is it harded than it looks?

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  10 років тому

      I owned a small Timberking 1220 mill for small jobs but hired a friend with a faster hydraulic mill when I was sawing large quantities. I have done several timber frames in the past. I was a log home contractor for 11 years but don't build professionally anymore. I don't feel timber framing is any harder than traditional methods, just a different process that requires more precision in the planning.

    I could never afford a huge property. But I do want a small property that I can set it up my way and decorate it with my style. I don't require very much to make me happy. And material things are not #1 either. I like the ability to hunt deer, grow some chickens & ducks & turkeys. And if the property is big enough add a few larger animals for some food and a little cash. I raise a garden & I've had berries & fruit trees. So, I could have whatever I was hungry for. I grew up with a 3 seater outhouse and the well was in the big barn. Easier to carry a couple of buckets to the house than 50 from the house to the barn for all the animals.
    You have a beautiful homestead, JC.

    Hey Boss, Thank you, thank you. another great video. looking forward to more. I have a question. I live in the NC, and yellow pine (long leaf pine) is the prominent species on my land. Have you ever built with it? Looks like a lot of things I have read on line is against it. If you have, what kind of luck have you had? On another note, I am about the same age as you. I have started doing the same thing about selling off things I don't need anymore. I have turned my business over to my son and started working towards my retirement plan, a nice homestead. Ill be keeping an eye out for all your future videos. Great inspiration. Thank you again.

    You are blessed with an advantage that few people really possess. Reenforcing your strong ambition is the fact that you knew exactly what you wanted to do at a very young age. Few people really have that. Everyone has dreams, but few are really so specific. I'm 40 and really had no idea for a long time what I wanted to do. I think a lot of people are like that and it leads to lack of focus. One of my dad's friends knew from a young age he wanted to be an auto mechanic and own his own garage. He owns one of the most successful garages in the city now. I'm not sure if that kind of focus can be taught. But it is great to see such a good example of it. This video is truly inspiring.

    • @thebossoftheswamp
      @thebossoftheswamp  9 років тому

      +gunjunky7520 I think it can be taught for sure. The problem is, most of us grow up being told we can't do this and can't do that and to stop dreaming. Our desires are often squashed by our parents and teachers and we're brainwashed into believing success is measured by wages. So most chase wages and not dreams. At the end of the road I prefer to look back and talk about the dreams I conquered rather than how much money I spent.

I'm about your age, as best I can tell. I have spent my entire adult life though out of the woods and out doors. I live in north Texas where the are no trees taller than shrubs. I miss the woods. I feel it in my bones. Especially now that I'm getting old... well, older. You have inspired me to seek out some wooded land and cabin to escape to. It will be difficult to obtain, but, I will do it and will enjoy my time off. Your words, life is what you make of it. I'm changing some things in my life, what's left of it anyway. Land was expensive where I was living in NH. I had to move away to conquer my dream of owning a hundred acres, so I did.
