I like to think of it as their “genetic telepathy”. It’s extraordinary and fascinating to watch them “read” each other during a performance. Thanks for chiming in, Dave. Great to have an expert such as yourself contributing.

Thank you for the expert commentary, Mr. Edmunds. I have often wondered why the Everlys had such a difficult time finding material after they left Cadence and the Bryants. I wish they would have stretched with some Gram Parsons or lesser known west coast material. Or the Stones' "Torn and Frayed," "Factory Girl," e.g. In the analog age, I reckon finding material was much more arduous. Of course, the implications of intellectual property are problematic.

If you watch them Phil looks so closely at Don intently. Crying’ in the Rain from the same show is also amazing. Phil was genius with his harmonies live because he was always spot on which is so difficult because you can’t anticipate the nuances of the lead singer. They weren’t a machine.

The Everlys were the greatest of live performers. They had incredible vocal dynamics. They played a microphone diaphrem like an instrument. The several times I saw them they were backed by the best studio musicians in Nashville. I thought what a great gig ~ They get to go out three months a year in great touring circumstances . Great venues, the best band imaginable. ~~~ They had Larry Londin on drums, Buddy Emmons on steel, ~~ The whole band were instrumental stars. There was the greatest chicken pickin guitarist. And The Everly Brothers absolutely deserved this great band. They were supported by their peers. They taught John and Paul and Graham and The Hollies and many others to sing as one

To me family vocalists/bands - The Everly Bros, The Kinks, The Bellamy Bros., The Forrester Sisters, Liliac, etc. - seem to me to more in sync vocally, etc. than other bands. The Eagles, The Tremeloes, and a few others are the exception to that. TBH, I am getting a little depressed that so many of the singers/songwriters/band members that I grew up listening to, are going to the great music festival in the sky. Three; Tom T. Hall, Don Everly, and Charlie Watts; before my b'day today.
If I recollect correct 2 members of The Crickets, Sonny Curtis and J I Allison, played on the original recording of this song. I am prolly wrong and it was later songs.
I am glad that the copywrite strike situation got worked out, Brother Fil.

The Everly Brothers were unique. They were't exactly rockabilly, but you might call them one of the creators of what would go on to be called country rock. You could say the same of Roy Orbison, but Don and Phil never did record wild rockers, like Roy Orbison's sides for Sun. For me, The Everly Brothers best material came after they stopped having massive hits. Their two albums for RCA in the 70s, and especialy the incredible album they did with The Hollies, Two Yanks In England, are my favourite records of theirs. Check out their unique arrangement of A Whiter Shade Of Pale.

Their perfection went so far that when Don was singing a note slightly out of key, what occasionally happens even to the best of the best, Phil instantly also sang that note slightly out of key to exactly the same amount so that it would perfectly match Don´s "wrong" note harmony wise. They were so GREAT together. It's a shame that off and on for years, they wouldn't even talk to each other, then, they would agree to do a "reunion" performance, and blow us all away, and like they never missed a day performing together.

Hi Fil! One of my favorite duos ever! I was 12 when I heard them, and was immediately hooked! I loved hearing Don pair up with Cliff Richard! Cliff admired The Everly Brothers, and paired up with Don at one of his concerts after Phil passed away. I was so sorry to hear of Don’s passing...one of the good guys! ✌️. I always felt I was the Susie in their song!

Bob Dylan has many influences, including civil war songs. But, early white rock and roll is also a continuing influence he has spoken about.
On his first album, “Highway 51 Blues” has the guitar part from Wake Up Little Suzie. That is acknowledged in the
    liner notes.

Thanks Fil. I always enjoy your analysis videos but this one was particularly special to me. The Everly Brothers was the first musical group that really got me interested in playing guitar and singing. I was lucky enough to play in a band in college and cam appreciate the work that it takes to play and sing live. I also appreciate how you obviously respect the musicians you review. Congrats on getting the copyright strike removed.

In a video of The Beatles during the recordings for Let it Be album Paul is asking about harmonies, ' If we do that we're the Raylets, or are we going for Don and Phil.' Paraphrased. And Simon and Garfunkel being asked about influences on harmonies occasionally give a look of 'Are you kidding, it's obvious isn't it.' Raise a glass to Don and Phil !!

Interesting factoid: I'm on a different channel watching the full performance of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss. T Bone Burnet talks about how well their voices blend and mentions when Phil and Don learned a new song they were taken into separate recording booths so that neither they were doing the harmony part...I'd say that worked pretty well for them.
