I was fortunate to see The Everly Brothers in concert back in 2003 when they were touring with Simon and Garfunkel. S&G did the first half of the show and then Paul Simon told the audience that all he and Artie ever wanted was to be as good as the Everlys. Then he said "Here they are, Phil and Don!" The place when nuts as Don Everly hit those opening chords to "Wake Up Little Suzie." The show was raised to a whole new level, and it's something I'll never forget.
Watching this after Don's death... There are scores of videos out there that show the Everlys singing together and I don't think anyone (unless they sing harmony) realizes how perfectly their voices are in unison. One video I found so telling and poignant was their 1983 Reunion video at the Royal Albert Hall when they sang "Let It Be Me". If you watch the video you will notice them looking at one another's mouths frequently and I think it is to maintain that perfection after being apart for 10 years. At 2:27 into that performance the smile that comes across Phil's face while he's watching Don sing is the most beautiful thing I've seen in a long long time. Thank you for this analysis Fil. These guys own a huge piece of my heart. Soundtrack of my youth 🎼🖤
You made me laugh, and I needed it. “ Their voices in perfect unison “ . That’s exactly the opposite of what I know you meant to say ie. “ In perfect harmony “
I couldn't agree more. And the thing is, you might think that the analysis make the music too technical but instead it, at least for me, it makes the music more beautiful because you know how much has gone into the music.
I appreciate that a man of your generation is respectful and appreciative of the music from other generations. I can see from your smile you really enjoy the music.
So glad you let Dream play through without interrupting. Lots of respect for your commentary from someone who was 9 yrs old and remembers this beauty playing on the radio. Harmonic perfection. Made this 68 yr old woman cry. Thank you.
Dear Fil, I have profound respect for your encyclopedic memory for the background on artists and songs, and your ability to deliver it in such a passionate and interesting way. You are NEVER boring -- even when speaking about artists that are not near the top of my list. In fact, I often re-think my list after listening to your riveting reviews. Thank you, Fil (for the ?? 50th time?). I don't care -- I am very grateful for you, Fil!!!!
School choirs and church choir helped to train me to harmonize easily and with the bands I'd been in that helped to train me and I had two cousins and also two uncle's and my Grandpa on my mom's my two younger sisters and both of our parents who all played instruments. My mom's side of the family is Portuguese full blooded and my dad's side was full blooded German and his sister and him played piano and he played organ as did my mom and sisters. I play guitar,Bass, and a little bit of Mandolin.I write lyrics , and music and I sing tenor. Pretty much true. Many of their early hits were written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, and the intricate lyrics often rhyme in the middle of lines as well as at the end. (That enhances the appeal, even if we don't consciously notice it.) Then add the Everlys' Kentucky accent voices, the sibling blend, and the harmonies which use a lot of fifth intervals rather than just thirds, and you've got a hit sound that many of the British Invasion groups tried to emulate.
Phil (Fil?), your commentary is much more insightful and educational than pretty much all of the other similar channels. You are teaching me to be a better music listener.
The Everly Brothers not only were musically great, they had the best hair during the early Rock and Roll era. They literally set the style for millions of guys in the 50s.
Sie haben sehr viel Herzensenergie gegeben. Diese Harmonie macht die Welt reicher. Das hört nicht auf. Spielt sie, lasst sie weiterhin Ihre Harmonie verbreiten. Wir brauchen es für unsere verletzten Herzen. Heilung pur. Ich danke Euch Phil und Don , von ❤💕💞🥰

Most of your technical critique is over my head as I'm not musical at all, but your passion comes through and I'm glued to your reactions. I've learned more about music from you than anyone else. Thank you. Keep doing what your doing.. Best reactions on UA-cam.
Their harmonies are some of the best of all time. It's a level of skill that can only be mastered to that degree from the type of practice two brothers spend their lives doing + the brotherly relationship in general + each being individually gifted. Incredible. I'm never not amazed.
What a shame that while the Everly Brothers were respected as current artists in the UK, they were locked in the USA as a 1950s act, in spite of the fact that they were creating great new material and new sounds. A great album was “Roots” which was released in 1968. They were also one of the earliest artists to blend country with rock & roll, long before The Buffalo Springfield or the Byrds.
michael mckenna I agree well said. A lot of people think Nazareth were the original singers of love hurts. When I tell people this. They must Google it lol. The Everly Brothers version is so much better in my opinion anyhow
Another amazing thing is that Phil's speaking voice is about a third above Don's. God absolutely meant for them to do what they did. They will never be outdone. They were unique and very, very special, and I will love them forever for sharing their great God-given gifts with us. Love you, Don. Love you, Phil, rest in peace.
Such a rare pleasure to watch and listen to these analyses by someone who not only really knows the music, but as well exhibits such enjoyment of it, and such respect, understanding, and sense of perspective for the artists and the times during which they recorded. Thank you!
I’m old enough to have seen the Everly’s live three times in the 1950’s ,and once in 1985. I am a musician because of the brothers. I was eleven years old the first time . I would go up to the front of the stage possibly ten feet from where they were singing. I still remember exactly what they were wearing right down to their black leather shoes that looked like slippers. This was long before the J 180 Everly model. They both played J 200’s. In those days no monitors , no mics on the acoustics that I can remember. They were like the Beatles to me in the 1950’s. Those rhythm intros are what got to me in respect to playing guitar. The huge upside of that is you start learning rhythm at such a young age. Then the vocal harmonies were mind boggling . I’ll never understand how people sitting in their seats could hear them. There was no screaming in those days . Maybe that’s how people heard them. I like most others learned to sing harmony from Don,and Phil. They were so instrumental to so many musicians and singers to this day. The downside all of us that saw them are in our seventies, and eighties now … Footnote . Don passed away a day after Charlie Watts, and Don was totally neglected by the press, and social media . Glad you did this show Fil …
@jacquescousteau217: Don passed on August 21, 2021 and Charlie Watts died 3 days later on August 24, 2021. And country singer Tom T. Hall had died on August 20, 2021 so there were 3 prominent music personalities who passed in the space of just a few days. But I agree… Don’s passing did not receive the coverage that it should have. He was barely a postscript in the news. I’m in NYC and that weekend, there was a hurricane bearing down on the NY metro area and that was the major headline here. Really a shame considering the incredible influence the Everly Brothers had not only in the 50s but for years to come.
Fil, your ear as a musician and your analysis has helped me better appreciate how peerless Don and Phil were with their harmonies and that not only were they naturally gifted, but that they worked hard to perfect their craft.
They laid the foundation to the Beatles and other groups. Their beautiful harmonies were musically and emotionally in sinc. A truly beautiful sound. 🎶🎶
I love it when you smile. You seem to genuinely enjoy the music that we oldsters got to enjoy when we were young like you. Nice to see new artists appreciate the music from our era.
The Everlys were definitely swoon-worthy when I was a kid. They were perfection: songs of romance, gorgeous harmonies, handsome as all get out and pomade for days. 💖
Sonny Curtis, composer of "Walk Right Back," on electric guitar. He also wrote "I Fought The Law" and the theme for the Mary Tyler Moore TV show. Joe B. recently passed away, but Sonny and J.I. still live just outside of Nashville.
My brother and I were raised listening to these brothers. We played music together for 17 years, and also did harmony. We melded together wonderfully. I miss those days!
So sad that they are both gone now. I am so glad that I had the chance to see them perform live once. One of the best shows I got to see. Nice to be able to sing with every song they performed. They were definitely one of the great acts!
The way you looked at them while they were singing says it all. They were as close to perfect as anyone could get. I was a little boy then and I loved hearing them on the radio.
Part of why I watch you is your broad smile you come across as a true music lover, your knowledge & comments are great for up & coming performers, I am not one, but I love what you have to say.
After seeing so many of this series suggested, I (somewhat cynically) clicked on this. Well, blow me down...instead ,with the hosts' truly genuine enjoyment and love of the artist I'd say we finally found the guy who can "tell a stranger about rock and roll". Good job.....and glad you believe in magic...because the Everly Brothers certainly performed that!! Bravo!!
@@roywall8169 Oh thx for the hint, but contrary to you I'm not a natural, and Anglisi is only my third or even fourth language. Also I couldn't give any less füx about grammar, but logical fallacies such as confusing a simple plural with a personal pronoun makes my skin itchy and my toes curl up. Pure physical reaction, sorry. So please tell me where I spelled wrong? Everlys's or Everlys', I'm never quite sure. Or was it somewhere else?
Thank you for the apology, I whole heartedly accept it. Orca Flotta glad to help. I did add an unneeded apostrophe, which you correctly pointed out. The brother’s sir name is Everly, so only one “s” is required, but you caught that yourself. You made one other error, in the spelling of “wife” in the plural. Wife is spelled “wives”, in the plural. Rock on! 🤘🏻
I saw the Everly Brothers perform at a sock hop in Knoxville, TN when I was about 11 tears old. Chet Atkins was their legal guardian because their father was an alcoholic.. They had to stand on milk cartons and they had no mic. Atkns lived in Knoxville at that time and performed on local radio. He would drive to Nashville on the weekends. I believe that Les Paul and Atkins were geniuses that also played the guitar. Atkins totally guided their early career.
You may have noticed Buddy Holly's band mates backing them. Joe Mauldin on bass (deceased), and Jerry Allison on drums. Also Sonny Curtis on guitar who wrote "I Fought The Law" for the Bobby Fuller Four.
Met Don Everly back in the mid 80's... He is just as large in person than this performance back then in the 60's! The guy is really big and tall. LEGENDARY! Met their mother in the early 90's and became friends with her and one day she brought me some peanut butter cookies she made for her boys but said they really didn't care for them and thought that I might like them. Which were absolutely DELICIOUS I might add! Very nice people my friends, very nice and totally talented! Great great review my friend! Oh yes, just to add to what you said about the audio quality, isn't it something how less is more?! Vocals and guitar! No technical recording equipment either! You were either truly talented back then or you were not! Back then, they put the time in to bring their music to perfection! Its like Waylon Jennings said about today's artist, "Put a cowboy hat, shirt, boots and guitar on someone and you can MAKE them a star!" Talent isn't made folks, its instilled in you from birth. Everyone can sing but not everyone is a singer!... Anyone can play a guitar but not everyone is a guitarist! Its ALL fakery now days, unfortunately, and everyone knows it... I will say it again, THANK GOD FOR EDISON! Without recordings, we would have nothing good to listen to! Great video as always my friend! Best regards!
I think Don has lost a couple of inches now - he's 82 - and brother Phil was actually two inches taller than him at 5'10" in their prime. Nice cookie story!
I was 10 when they did this, and I already loved them. 2 of the finest harmonizing voices ever. Still 2 of my favorites. Here in Knoxville they are building a small park in tribute to them

The Everly Brothers singing , " Dream, Dream Dream" was my favorite slow dance song with a date. It was so beautiful to fantasize how the evening would end that evening while listening to a song that led to fantasies of real love.
Fil, Lovely commentary.. I think this is the best harmony I’ve ever heard in my 64 years. Thank you. They recorded this just months before I was born. I have to believe my parents watched this on Ed Sullivan.
Wasn't really a choice in those years, had to stay a jump ahead of the draft board. Many musical groups met their demise when one or more members were drafted. Reserves gave them more flexibility.
I would never have thought that these recordings were live because they were perfect! I would have thought that, although they are clearly playing and singing, that the studio would have broadcasted pre-recorded music - ie: the records. I've always loved the Everly Brothers, ever since I was a little girl listening to old tapes; now I'm even more impressed by their talent.
Cathy's Clown was written by Don and Phil. The parts of the song were ment to be two different songs that they did not finish. So they fused the two parts. And there it was. Cathy's Clown. And i think it was even their best selling hit ever.
It was their best selling song. That has always been my favorite song of theirs; although I love them all. Actually, a court in Nashville TN judged that the song was written by Don. Phil did write a line or 2 but had given up any rights as a co-writer of the song.
Don Everly actually wrote Cathy's clown, which was a true story about a girl he dated. And your so right Fil on how precise there singing together was. What great singers they were. Check out their cover of Mark offers why worry. They were one of the most influential musicians of all time. Great analysis Fil.
@@scotthoyt8970 Not any more. Phil signed the song over to Don in 1980 and a court recently upheld that only Don should continue to receive royalties, not shared with Phil's estate.
I’ve loved the Everly Brothers for my whole life - literally since I knew what music was. I feel so fortunate that I was able to see them live when they reunited in the mid 80s. Twenty-five years after their heyday and their harmonies were still as tight and crystalline as ever. Thanks for this appreciative analysis, Fil.
Great analysis and history Fil, thank you. There's nobody better on harmonies than the brothers. What surprised me was a comment by Keith Richards about what a great rhythm guitarist and influence Don Everly was with his style and open tuning which we can all agree that Keith's the King!

Wow, that took me back. 1960 was the year I was born. Started to hear these guys on radio when I was 8 years old and had my first childhood sweetheart, Cathy. Hope I was not regarded as her clown by my primary school class mates? Our form teacher actually noticed our romance and sat as at desks next to each other. Fast forward to the mid 70s (Less Cathy) and a box set was released containing all the Everly Brothers hit singles which was a must have in my teenage record collection. Fast forward to the early 80s and The Everly Brothers did a reunion tour in which I was lucky enough to see them live at the Hammersmith Odeon, London. Their voices had not changed. Their performance was outstanding. They were simply amazing vocalists. Thank you so much for the video and your detailed analysis of their vocal and performing skills.

I discovered this station just yesterday. I've stopped watching the videos and started watching this young man appreciate the music. The commentary is so insightful. I enjoy this approach so much.
They'd been singin together from childhood, Don was harmony until Phil mastered it, even though they were radio stars the same principles applied, and the way keeping 'in sync' was achieved was to watch each others face so that the harmony voice knew where to go and whether the lead voice was singing true or doing a bit of improvisation. Both boys have said that once they start a song/medley they somehow become one. That biological connection can mean that link is much stronger than 'bandmates' and also helps explain their moving together. In regards to the Crickets, when Buddy and the others died their sense of loss was just soo profound, I somehow feel that that was their way of grieving a friend who had so much to offer

At 2:27 into that performance the smile that comes across Phil's face while he's watching Don sing is the most beautiful thing I've seen in a long long time.
Thank you for this analysis Fil. These guys own a huge piece of my heart.
Soundtrack of my youth 🎼🖤
Let it be me. 'Such a beautiful song.
I love about every song they did, but "Let It Be Me" is probably my favorite. Nobody sang it better than these two.
You made me laugh, and I needed it. “ Their voices in perfect unison “ . That’s exactly the opposite of what I know you meant to say ie. “ In perfect harmony “
Rest in Peace to them both, such incredible talents. There will never be another, that's for sure!
Fil's unbroken attention is what make this series great.
Right? I love how he is so obviously enjoying hearing the music, lol. I started playing music to make people look like that! : )
Exactly!!!
I couldn't agree more. And the thing is, you might think that the analysis make the music too technical but instead it, at least for me, it makes the music more beautiful because you know how much has gone into the music.
The Everly Brothers influenced many singing groups with their magnificent harmony. 50 years later still sounds great. 🎶🎶
Absolutely!!!
I don't care -- I am very grateful for you, Fil!!!!
..man, Fil is spot-on with his ‘evaluations’ and KNOWLEDGE of music REGARDLESS of genre and/or the evolution of music. The dude is king!
@@m118lr I AGREE TOTALLY FIL IS VERY SHARP IN WHAT HE DOES
""it's almost like we could read each other's minds when we sang." Don Everly
They probably actually did, without specifically noticing it.
Morphic Resonance?
School choirs and church choir helped to train me to harmonize easily and with the bands I'd been in that helped to train me and I had two cousins and also two uncle's and my Grandpa on my mom's my two younger sisters and both of our parents who all played instruments. My mom's side of the family is Portuguese full blooded and my dad's side was full blooded German and his sister and him played piano and he played organ as did my mom and sisters. I play guitar,Bass, and a little bit of Mandolin.I write lyrics , and music and I sing tenor. I know what a good musician and good music is and the Everly Brothers were the epitome of great musicians.I loved all of their songs that they did. Later folks !

@@TobyRossFun I'm sorry to hear your childhood wasn't very good. Mine wasn't either. I live with my one of my younger sisters now. I won't bore you with my life story. Music is the only thing that helped me through a lot of problems. Later Toby R.
Let It Be Me is another one with literally breathtaking harmonies.
What am I saying... ALL their stuff was breathtaking harmonies, lol.
Pretty much true.
Many of their early hits were written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant, and the intricate lyrics often rhyme in the middle of lines as well as at the end. (That enhances the appeal, even if we don't consciously notice it.)
Then add the Everlys' Kentucky accent voices, the sibling blend, and the harmonies which use a lot of fifth intervals rather than just thirds, and you've got a hit sound that many of the British Invasion groups tried to emulate.
Yes! learned so much from them when I trying to learn to sing as a kid!
And Devoted To You
Love Hurts.
Phil (Fil?), your commentary is much more insightful and educational than pretty much all of the other similar channels. You are teaching me to be a better music listener.
Thanks Mike! Yes it's Fil the Norwegian spelling ☺
I agree! Been a singer for 45 years and you are very precise and knowledgeable about music. Thank you so Much!
I just discover you, Fil, tonight. Friday the 13th has been good to me! I subscribe midway through the second video I listened to.
And he never talks over our heads with obscure terms from music theory.
I just discovered you Fill, thanks for making these videos. It shows that you truly love music.
PHIL, THE WORLD IS A BETTER PLACE WITH YOU IN IT!!!
Yes all of his beloved fans agree. Sadly missed.
Yeah
I think he means Fil, Wings Of Pegasus, not Phil Everly.
I have listened to several others analyzing music, you are by far the best. Thank you.
Thanks!
The Everly Brothers not only were musically great, they had the best hair during the early Rock and Roll era. They literally set the style for millions of guys in the 50s.
we used to put BRYLCREAM in our hair to imitate our Idols, that was the Trend then..
It's thought Margaret suggested copyin Tony Curtis, and with the volume of wavy & curly hair, and 'dressing' their 'pomps' were created
Sie haben sehr viel Herzensenergie gegeben. Diese Harmonie macht die Welt reicher. Das hört nicht auf. Spielt sie, lasst sie weiterhin Ihre Harmonie verbreiten. Wir brauchen es für unsere verletzten Herzen. Heilung pur.
Ich danke Euch Phil und Don , von ❤💕💞🥰

Don't forget they didn't have autotuners either. Those were the days when famous musicians had real talent.
Autotune literally hurts my ears or brain or something. I can instantly recognize it. How can people accept those singers as talent?
Damn - absolutely! just like in those days, models were really natural ly beautiful women, because there was NO computer graphics.
THE HUMANKIND MUST MAKE A RETROSPECTIVE VIEW AND FIX EVERYTHING HAS CHANGED FOR WRONG, AND NOT ONLY IN MUSIC TERMS
Amazing reactions. Your range is amazing. One day it's the Everly Brothers and the next is Angus Young breaking a string on stage.
It must be said that the hair is every bit as good as the performance..
Speaking of spot on, what a wonderful explanation of what we’re witnessing with the harmony. Never heard it put so eloquently. Great job.
We know that Fil isn't full of crap about all this, because almost every British classic rock band mentions the Everly Brothers as inspiration.
Especially Graham Nash of The Hollies
What voices! I was lucky enough to meet them back in the mid ‘80s. Two really nice and gracious guys. RIP Phil.
Phil said once that he didn’t want to do the speaking portion in Ebony Eyes after he heard himself back, saying he “sounded like Mickey Mouse.” Lol
I still get goosebumps watching them and hearing their amazing harmonies.
RIP, Don Everly. this backup job by the Crickets is one of the greatest by any instrumental combo, ever
Jerry Allison on Cathy's Clown! Just stellar.
One of my favorite Everly tracks is one that Phil wrote called “ when will I be loved “
I saw these guys in the eighties, they were absolutely brilliant. I was very aware that I was in the presence of something very, very special indeed.
Music: Spot on!
Commentary: Nailed it.
Anita Hensley: Well put!
Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video. I love the Everly Brothers, and the respect and admiration you've shown them is commendable.
'Arms of Mary' came later, with increased orchestration, and gets little playtime...unfortunately.
They laid the foundation to the Beatles and other groups. Their beautiful harmonies were musically and emotionally in sinc. A truly beautiful sound. 🎶🎶
My favorite band from the early sixties. Despite the interpersonal problems between the two, they never lost their fan base
Saw this on your website, "Had a cool meeting today, I'm now endorsed by Fender!" Congrats, Fil!!!
Thanks!
They are being backed by Buddy Holly's Crickets (Jerry Allison on drums and Joe Maudlin on bass)
Sonny Curtis is also with the Crickets on this
That's why the drums sounded so familiar
Sonny Curtis, composer of "Walk Right Back," on electric guitar. He also wrote "I Fought The Law" and the theme for the Mary Tyler Moore TV show. Joe B. recently passed away, but Sonny and J.I. still live just outside of Nashville.
That was a surprise about Buddy Holly and the Crickets.
I heard the Crickets in the 90's backing Nanci Griffith. Amazing - rock history!
My brother and I were raised listening to these brothers. We played music together for 17 years, and also did harmony. We melded together wonderfully. I miss those days!
Listening to you I realize how much the Beatles were influenced by the Everlys, right down to the bow ! Amazing.
Bravo!!
They mastered harmony. Love the Everly’s. Rock on! 🤘🏻
Agree!
Why on earth would anyone thumbs down this video??
Fil always does a great job on his analysis/reactions ...
Everlys please! It's plural so no idiot's apostrophe needed, ffs.
Or were you talking about the Everlys's kitchen, cars, wifes, stamp collection ...?
Orca Flotta friendly tip. When going full on “grammar police”, take special care to correct your spelling. 🤓
I love love love the Everly Brothers. Such a unique sound. And I also love watching you, watching the videos. 💕
You may have noticed Buddy Holly's band mates backing them. Joe Mauldin on bass (deceased), and Jerry Allison on drums. Also Sonny Curtis on guitar who wrote "I Fought The Law" for the Bobby Fuller Four.
They were good friends with Holly. Phil went to his funeral.
Its like Waylon Jennings said about today's artist, "Put a cowboy hat, shirt, boots and guitar on someone and you can MAKE them a star!"
Talent isn't made folks, its instilled in you from birth.

I think Don has lost a couple of inches now - he's 82 - and brother Phil was actually two inches taller than him at 5'10" in their prime. Nice cookie story!
Man, their vocals get me every time. Thanks for the great analysis again. Can't stand auto tuned vocals 😎

They are so perfect I could cry.
😢 me too, I miss them. No others come close to their harmonizing.

This show was done in London on the Alma Cogan show
in 1961 both joined the Marines reserve. Great harmony and genuinely good guys.
Wasn't really a choice in those years, had to stay a jump ahead of the draft board. Many musical groups met their demise when one or more members were drafted. Reserves gave them more flexibility.
@@Marcel_Audubon Point granted. However, they could have chosen the Air Force or Navy just as easy. I respect their choice.
You're killin me here! All my crushes.....one after another. :-)
WHAT AN AMAZING PIECE OF ART OF MUSIC! THIS HAS ALREADY 60 YEARS OLD AND STILL IT COULD MAKE YOUR DAY
Don Everly actually wrote Cathy's clown, which was a true story about a girl he dated. And your so right Fil on how precise there singing together was. What great singers they were. Check out their cover of Mark offers why worry. They were one of the most influential musicians of all time. Great analysis Fil.
The song credits for "Cathy's Clown": Don Everly AND Phil Everly.

The Everly Brothers had a unique sound. Like you said, they are very tight on their vocals. They were fantastic. Your insights are very good.

As great as it is to see these groups from my youth playing these timeless tunes, it is equally great to see how Fil lovingly enjoys them too!
Great analysis and history Fil, thank you. There's nobody better on harmonies than the brothers. What surprised me was a comment by Keith Richards about what a great rhythm guitarist and influence Don Everly was with his style and open tuning which we can all agree that Keith's the King!
Probably the greatest harmony artists I've ever Heard. Sad to hear about Don's passing. However I believe its great to think that heaven is rocking as the Everly brothers are reunited together and with the other great rock gods
The great Graham Nash said he perfected the harmonies that he would later use in the Hollies and Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young by listening to the Everly Brothers and inventing a 3ed harmony line for their songs.
The rate of note, pitch and volume change all so perfectly coordinated.

Love how you appreciate all music and do such a thorough analysis. As a fellow musician I find your vids very interesting 👍
I am fortunate to be from Muhlenberg County where the Everly family lived when Don was born. We are so proud of them!!
