Oh, in the 50's she would have gotten kicked out of the house. The boy would have gotten Holy hell from his parents and probably sent to reform school. They were in either a movie theater since some of them had all night showings. Parents were very strict in those days and if news had gotten ot to the neighbors they probably would moe to a new town. Released in 1958
I vividly remember in the late 50's (I was just finishing up grade school), when this, along w/ their "Bye, Bye, Love" & "Bird Dog" ( "Hey Bird Dog, get away from my quail; hey, Bird Dog, you're on the wrong trail; Bird Dog, you'd better leave my lovey-dove alone; hey Bird Dog, get away from my chick; hey Bird Dog, you'd better get away quick; Bird Dog, you'd better find a chicken-little of your own") were being "played to death" on the radio. We didn't mind.
It was recorded August 16, 1957 and released September 2, 1957. It hit #1 in 1958. "Wake Up Little Susie" is a popular song written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant and published in 1957. The song is best known in a recording by the Everly Brothers, issued by Cadence Records as catalog number 1337. The Everly Brothers record reached No. 1 on the Billboard Pop chart and the Cash Box Best Selling Records chart, despite having been banned from Boston radio stations for lyrics that, at the time, were considered suggestive, according to a 1986 interview with Don Everly. "Wake Up Little Susie" also spent seven weeks atop the Billboard country chart and got to No. two on the UK Singles Chart. The song was ranked at No. 318 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
1958, the year I was born, my dad was a high school football coach, with a fierce competitive streak in his character, in Eureka, South Dakota. One late fall Friday night, in rain and sleet and cold wind, his team was getting their butts kicked by a score that was too much for them to have any hope of winning. Dad called a timeout to talk to the team -in those days the coach would go out on the field to talk to players in a huddle during timeouts, and when he went out to the huddle to verbally kick some butt and get his team going, he got to the huddle, only to find the team singing this song and laughing and having a great time. He later told my mom that "there was nothing better to do at that moment, so I just joined in with them." Mom told that story for nearly a half century, snickering and chuckling all the way through it, each time.
It says in the title 1957.i always assumed it was a drive in movie at a smallish town.when they woke up all the other cars would be gone.back in those days if a girl's was out past curfew people would assume she was sleeping with him and everyone would watch her for the next 9 months she'd be the talk of the town till the next ' scandal' happened.like they said her repretation is shot.she may as well move town.this is unless he can get her back home and she can get in her bed before anyone noticed.
and the writers double checked to make sure that there was no airline with that number one of my fav lesser known songs was The Price Of Love and That's Old FASHIONED
I just found your channel today. I have been binging! So much fun! "Poor Jenny" is an Everly Brothers song that'll blow your mind. Guaranteed. I hope you'll give it a shot. Lesser known, but absolutely brilliant. Thanks for the smiles.
They fell asleep ar the movies. In the features you had a double feature cartoon and maybe some news reels. But you could easily spend 3 to 4 hours there. Curfews we're usually 10 or 11 for girls and and later for boys if they had one.
These 2. Great brothers. We're some of the perfect harmonies that inspired the Bee gees. 💞💞💞. May be. You could play. Wedding day. By Bee gees. Luv yal🤩
These guys had a huge influence on the BEATLES. Love this song...I can see them at the Drive-In movie. Great job guys! They just released a compilation TO-DAY of 17 of their songs some unreleased prevously. It's called HEY DOLL BABY. That song and one called WALK RIGHT BACK (sad...tears your heart out!) are fantastic.
Most of the Everly Brothers hit songs were written by the renowned songwriters Felice and Boudloux Bryant. They had over a hundred big hits across the music spectrum. The Everlys were their big breakthrough.
Now you need to do some live versions . Bird dog , bye bye love . Lucille. The price of love . Let it be me reunion concert 1983 at the royal Albert Hall. Beautiful 🤩
Sadly, though, both brothers have passed on. Phil, the blonder brother, died a few years ago and Don, the dark haired older brother left us this year. They were fabulous and influenced many artists, including The Beatles. John and Paul modeled themselves after the brothers, who are member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
S&M again you have real brothers that blend so well together. This song was considered scandalous back in the late 50's. The Everly Brothers have a huge catalog of songs that were hit after hit!
Mom and Dad wouldn't be in the next room as you thought. Back then we went to the drive-in theater which was risky business enough. But sounds like they fell asleep in the car and just woke up. Oops
this song was banned in boston mass .at the time for a while because it was suggestive at the time ,,,,so unreal.not all radio stations tho ... oh those fabulous fifties soooooo good for music ,and i still have all those records in my collection .. glad to see the new generation finally getting around to discovering the old tunes ,,
That fickle ole Karen, Cathy's Clown and Wake Up Little Suzie were very popular at our house because they were singing about me and my two sisters, Karen and Kathy. Love the Everly Brothers.
You have remember the “Drive In’s” you’d Drive your car in and watch a couple of movies, be out by midnight or if you were Suzie, you fell asleep and you were in deep do-do!….. SanJoséBob
Claudette, Temptation, Problems, Bird Dog 😂, Walk Right Back, I kissed Ya, Crying in the Rain, When Will I be Loved, Bowling Green, their hits go on and on. Thank You, Don and Phil ✨🕊✨
The story behind this song is worse than you think.....they fell asleep in the car at the DRIVE-IN movie! They’ve both been out WAY past BOTH their curfews! They’re BOTH screwed!
OMG... Shawn and Mel, I haven't laughed this hard in a long time. I just watched you two listen to this song for the first time in your lives and you just cracked me up. The first time I heard it was 66 years ago. I was 8 years old back then and I have to admit, I didn't get it. I just enjoyed the beat of the song and the voices of Phil and Don. But I can promise you this... 5 years later I sure as heck "got it". But just to watch your faces as the song progressed and suddenly you "got it, understood what was going on"... the both of you just blew me away with your reactions to "that situation". OMG that was so funny... both of you were so funny, so blown away by the sudden realization. Mel was first to "get it", but Shawn was only about once second behind. Back in the 1960s the drive-in movie was all the rage and I fully participated. I myself got caught in this trap with Ann, but we didn't get into any trouble for it, because we got away with it. More than once, lol. Thanks so much for your great reactions and for the joy that I got from them, even though you made me cry with laughter. I love you two. Lotsa love from and older guy in western Canada. 👊 💗 [EDIT]: In fact I was still thinking about it the next day and came back again just to see your reactions one more time. Same thing happened. Watch yourselves at "What are we gonna tell your mama?" How would it be possible not to fall in love with the two of you? 🤣
Found your channel while searching for this song and I gotta say I like what I'm seeing..i just subscribed..its a genius idea,1st off...listening to/ discovering classics....great idea and you can bet I'll be looking for your uploads from now on!
The Everly Brothers were wonderful, and this song is so much fun. I sure knew all the words to this one! Back in the '50s, staying out so late would not just ruin the girl's reputation, it would ruin the boy's, too! All the "nice girls" would be off limits to him after that. 😄
Ooh La La !! Back in the 50’s , 60’s your reputation meant a lot, and being late ………what’reyou gonna tell your mama, what’re gonna tell your pop !!! Most kids would have been scared to even go home, but they had to !!❤
You have to understand that this is from the 50s and no nice girl would stay out all night with a boy. They probably didnt get to go out again for a long time. Suzy definitely got grounded !!! And he became "persona non grata" !
In the 1950s and '60s there was a thing called a "drive-in theater." It wasn't uncommon to to fall asleep in your car but usually someone would come around and tap on the car windows to wake people up whose cars were still there after everyone has gone. This song was 1957. I remember because I was a Freshman in high school and had a crush on a girl named Susie. I was 14 and she was 15. She thought I was "just a kid."
You wanna hear them rock out a little try Lucille, Love is Strange, Be Bop a Lulu. You want them to make you cry listen to "I'll Do My Cryin' in the Rain, Let It Be Me, or God forbid, "Ebony Eyes." Get a Hanky for that last one.
This song was banned in Boston I believe as their entire economy at the time was made up from drive through movies and they didn't want people to think that it was easy to fall asleep whilst watching them!
Listen to The Everly Brothers " Let It Be Me" One of the greatest love songs ever.
Spot on
I still remember all the words to that song
Australia 💕 Christina
Yes, “Let It Be Me”!
Can you believe stations refused to play this song because it was thought to be to racey? Lol. What would they have done with some of today's songs.
I'm glad you guys are enjoying music from this time period. Just a person and an acoustic making beautiful music. Awesome reaction guys.
You should find a live on tv version of this song. It's fun to see. Especially when they say "Oooo La La"
A lot of older songs are just FUN! We need more of this today.
"Cathy's Clown" "I'll Do My Crying in the Rain" are also worth listening to
also Price Of Love and Poor Jenny
They sing as if it's one voice, their harmonies are so tight. In terms of harmony, they are the GOAT.
Hello Raenelle,

@@ralphraucci5128I think the beach boys, and Beatles were better.
They were my cousins. Rest in Peace Don and Phil....I love and miss you! xoxo Thank you both for keeping their memory alive and liking their music.
I've loved their music since the age of 12 in 1993. I've met other fans even younger than myself. Their music will live forever.
The are brothers
@@SandraJones-py1bd I’m aware. Yes. They were MY cousins
Thx! That’s the one that got banned in some places because of the words “ooo-la-la!” Family harmonies are amazing! They influenced many artists!
Censorship almost banned this song because of the part where it says, "Ooh la la". What is might imply. Lol Things sure have changed from the 50's.
Oh, in the 50's she would have gotten kicked out of the house. The boy would have gotten Holy hell from his parents and probably sent to reform school. A drive in movie they were at.
@@brianpowell6058 It doesn't really say. When I heard this as a kid, I pictured two teens slumped over in their seats in a theater!
You Guys are Killin it with these Oldies But Goldie's! I'm loving it, Thanks for the Memories!
Buddy Holly is another great artist.
The Everly Brothers had another big hit called "Bye Bye Love", it's funny no one has mentioned this yet.
The trouble those boys got Little Susie into was nothing compared to what they did to 'Poor Jenny'!
yes .....haha
So funny!!!
very true one of my older brothers teased me about this one even thought my name is spelled differently
It was recorded August 16, 1957 and released September 2, 1957. It hit #1 in 1958.

This was the first song I heard by them when I was 5 years old from a 50's complitation album my dad bought me.
1958, the year I was born, my dad was a high school football coach, with a fierce competitive streak in his character, in Eureka, South Dakota. They were at the drive in movies. I grew up on this music ✌️

Decades later they recorded, “On The Wings Of A Nightingale”. A beautiful song, give it a listen.
One of the lesser known songs of the brothers is called Ebony Eyes. Beautiful ballad.
Yes, that was a tear jerker. I remember that one, well. So very, sad.
One of my favourite ballads and so sad! 🤗💞💖💔💜
I looove that one too. It rips your heart out .

Huge hit records in the 50's!!
My mom would come into my bedroom in the morning & sing this to me before school...yes I was called Susie, but only about 5 when it came out.
Imagine having a name like mine-- I heard this ALLLLL the time! All 55 of my years LOL!--- Great duo!
Yep! So many people sang this song and "Oh Susannah" to me over my 50 years.
For those who know this song, "wake up, little Suzie" is the phrase used to wake someone or something up.
I just found your channel today. I have been binging! So much fun! "Poor Jenny" is an Everly Brothers song that'll blow your mind. Guaranteed. I hope you'll give it a shot. Lesser known, but absolutely brilliant. Thanks for the smiles.

Lol when I was just a little kid I used to sing this song all the time
“All I have to do is dream”, “Birddog” “Cathy’s Clown”, “let it be me”, etc, etc
They were a huge influence on Simon and Garfunkel.
My wife and I fell a sleep at the drive in back in the late 70's. Woke up and we were the only car there.

Like the BeeGees, and the Carpenters.. and yes.. Hanson!! ( I love Hanson's new stuff) siblings who can sing make the best harmonies.
Fell in love with these two at 14, had ALL their songs. We had Drive In movies in the 60s, maybe that's where they fell asleep.??? Just saying....
This is where the Beatles got their harmony style. They loved the Everly Brothers.
I think Mel has perfect pitch and good range! Great addition to any band or choir!🎶🎶🎶❣

The songs...The harmonies...Just a tremendous talent...nice review
The Everly Brothers were really big back in the day. They were role models for so many others including the Beatles.

You cannot go wrong with Everly Bros. Rock n Roll, I do not consider anything after the 60's Rock n Roll. Although some call it that.
Released in 1958. Someone analyzing this said their singing was so well combined that they only used one microphone.
Hard to believe they're both gone now. We lost Phil (tallest & youngest) in 2014 and we just lost Don (shortest & oldest) this year.
I enjoy watching your reaction to the songs I grew up with right now i’am 71yrs. Old.
You guys are laughing and these people making comments are ignorant. But these guys wrote several songs that you probably know
Did they really fall asleep?😁😂 Another great reaction guys. Keep it rolling.
As my grandmother would say, "stay away from Susie, she one of them Little Fast Girls."
Love how you doing the oldies. Everly brothers called Ebony Eyes. Sad story lol.
