I like this idea of actually being punished when you die. Having played PoE hardcore a bit, I found that the tense nature of having something to lose makes it more enjoyable. Can't just auto pilot forces you to engage
I played an old Nexon game called Dark Ages and whenever you died you would lose any "enchanted equipment" you had and everything else that wasn't destroyed on death dropped on the spot that you died. You then had 2 hours to get to your body before all of your items and gold became free to anyone who walked by. "Enchanted armor" usually meant gauntlets, any boots that weren't basic-ish boots, all rings, necklaces, and earrings. If you were a priest or wizard it meant your staff too. On top of that, you lost exp towards your next level, received a scar which hindered your base HP and MP growth upon leveling which could only be removed by followers of certain churches, and had a chance to straight up lose base HP and MP. Fucking brutal.
I know a lot of people dont care about this but I am OBSESSED with the mount system in this game. If they can achieve what they've said they want to with husbandry, good luck prying my hands from breeding all the craziest and coolest creatures :)

Because it shifts away from common MMO of this type - no handholding quest markers, actually immersive massive world and building scale that is reasonable and realistic with proper UI design unlike most crowdfunded MMO out there with horrible UI
@@zealous404 This game is the common MMO... There are handholding quest markers(green name), the world is less massive and less immersive with a map/minimap, and the UI is really no different than a polished game. Your head's in the clouds, my friend.
I intentionally kept myself in the dark about this game ever since I saw people getting so hyped for it. This looks promising, so I'll definitely try it out when it has a full release
It's mix, not all quests are pinpointed and not all quests are exploration. The apparition one is not a quest given by someone, you have to be in a specific place to get it. Then there was the quest of finding the 2 solders in the cave. The moon analogy might be bad but it works, just cus you know where to find something doesn't mean you will not have to look for a way to get it.
@@ZiIIous I think I addressed that too by saying "knowing where to find something is different from actually finding it" One example is finding the two soldiers, I have watched 4 streamers streaming AoC, from Asmongold to Jilon, all of them struggled to complete that quest even though map was showing where the objective is. If you have a treasure map in your hand, doesn't mean it's gonna be ez to get out the location marked on the map. The journey itself is the adventure, exploration. You seem to think exploration = roaming around randomly without any goal.
You're correct, somehow game developers haven't figured out simple, good quest design. Maps/minimaps were a horrible design that needs to be deleted from MMOs.
I'm honestly impressed. I had some concerns about the world design based on the snippets they had shown previous, but it actually looks way more impressive and cohesive than it seemed previously. I love the huge scale and massive draw distance, and the fact that you can see different biomes from very far away.
Fairly sure that is safe to assume. We have no date yet for Alpha 2, I'd imagine it probably wont be until 2022 and that is when we will see the bulk of the content tests.
At least 2-3 years away if everything goes smoothly. Combat is in rework atm, as they try to figure it out. If they can't get it right, I've heard they will go with Tab target only.
Getting action combat right is hard, but if done well, could make the game insanely popular! Tab targetting is less exciting, but it could be easier to implement and easier to make it fluid.
@@jetjet6560 I slightly prefer action combat, but don't have a strong preference either way. What matters is that the combat is smooth and has a skill curve. The combat should be fun and satisfying without any further context in my opinion.
I actually love the scale of this!! LOVE IT! I also like that there's no "here kill this, done? ok go back, speak to this npc, ok back to the cave, kill that next in the same cave" endlessly.
I understand the loot part and I reaaaaally love getting that super rare loot from a boss or mob, but the loot system they implemented kindda makes sense. You kill a mob and get some type of proof that you kill it and the NPCs pay you for that as retribution, or use it to craft something. I really like the idea as well
This game reminds me of a couple of other games at first glance. The starting area felt a bit like Haven in Dragon Age Inquisition, when you were riding around I got heavy LOTRO vibes and in the cave there was a bit of Kingdoms of Amalur. All in all, it looks promising.
Thanks for your thoughts. I looking forward to this game. Might be time to upgrade my prehistoric PC. Love how you can just wander around, explore and discover quests from NPCs. Thanks again for your thoughts.
I couldn't participate in the A0 because it was always at around 5am for me. So I was very happy to participate over the weekend and I was pleased with what I've seen. Can't wait to explore new areas soon.
Honestly I expected a little mob grinding and dont mind a little, I played bless ffs, but I don’t want 50% quest 50% mob grind. If bosses and higher level apponents have a significant xp increase that would be great.
Maybe having world dungeons that you can clear for lots of xp, but aren't required to be part of a quest, so it would be more risky to just grind mobs from the overworld, and also more rewarding, while still mantaining the sense of exploration
I doubt that will be the case but who knows what the core game design will be on launch. Since its more of a sandboxy mmo than a themepark one, I wouldnt be to suprised if that was the case. making people forge their own paths rather than following a quest guide
there's probably no content beyond lvl 15+... so why would they bother streamlining it now :p they said it, it's purely a technical test. As seen, plenty of higher priority things that need fixing before they start balancing stuff
It’s like Steven said. “MMO’s is a maturing genre. Older people play them.” Younger people want instant gratification. We really need the genre to keep going. Makes you wonder if AOC fails.... will the genre go extinct?
Yes, the genre would go extinct. AoC is the only MMORPG nowadays that seeks the true essence of an MMORPG. If it fails, it is the end. It's not like other companies won't be releasing any more MMORPGs in the future, but they will just be MMOs. They will not look for the roots of the genre, they will only be games that entertain some time to generate money and that's it.
Riot Games is working on an MMO as we speak. but I do agree that if AOC, a giant project fails, then that would discourage any gaming studio from working on an MMO. MMOs are the biggest and most risky type of project a gaming studio could take on.
Excited to see how the game develops. It still has a long way to go, but I've been following it for years at this point and things are starting to come together, especially on the back-end side.
Found out that its pretty hard to get into other mmos after knowing which one is your main mmo, like i play FF14 and trying to get into BDO is pretty hard. I’ll try this one out when it launches cause it looks interesting.
if you are used to playing theme park style mmos like wow or ff, ashes is very likely not gonna be for u either seeing all of the sandbox elements that it has, heavy penalties for deaths and as the devs said that they r taking approach of not holding players hand

I get that this was likely far more work to put together than your usual face cam stuff, but I just want to say that that effort is apparent in the end-product. Not only is the video more well-produced and straight-to-the-point, but you also get to flex your narrative voice a bit more than what is allowed by the usual minute of pros/cons. Also, glad to see Ashes continuing to improve.
I played tons of Mmo from target to tab combat but Action combat is the most engaging for me. Especially the combat of BDO, I need to combo my skills and memorize the hot keys. And it takes practice. I really hope they stick on action combat
@Rheumattica I don't understand this. From a PVP perspective, how can you possibly balance tab target combat without it being a gear check at every level? If there's no way to avoid skills, what's the point? What's stopping someone from having a ton of gear and clicking on someone to drop an un-avoidable meteor on someone's head that they can't dodge or i-frame out of?
FFXIV is the only real mmo out there right now. Subjective opinion, but given the sheer density of the game, this just looks mediocre; even if it’s just alpha.
@@poisonated7467 I played on Vazaelle before it merged into Maelin Starpyre. I joined around the release of Kunark and leveled a Iksar Shadowknight to 60 and got my 1.0 epic. Played seriously until Gates of Discord, then quit, playing it off/on until today. To compare a dated game back from 1999 is disingenuous and sad. Amazon's Lumberyard engine is utter garbage, and yes, it's mediocre - given that its a multi-trillion dollar company we're talking about. But hey, amazing how presuming works. Wow.
@@Sheddertje Yep, that's the great thing about opinions - though in this case, it's been proven how much XIV has in terms of player retainability, content density, and a healthy dev/player relationship; whereas with WoW it's taken a fall for the worse - has little retainability, low density of content and the relationship between devs and players is nonexistent and toxic. But yes, to each their own! Glad I played both games and have a valid opinion, whereas you say FF "looks" mediocre, when you havent even played it! Awesome!
Lol love your comment on "harsh" death penalty...nothing compared to the corpse runs we had to do in EQ1, not to mention the XP loss. I love that they don't make it easy.
This game has some great ideas and the detail in some places are pretty impressive. Ultimately I feel like the different elements struggle to find a unified theme or identity. It's only alpha so lets hope things are closer to where New World is at.

@@georgeblair3894 not so sure. They will definately make it to alpha, they recently secured a 7 figure investment. Their recent streams have been enjoyable imo. Been waiting for this video since nda release!!!!
Thank you for your coverage of this game. You are the reason why I’m stoked for this mmo and look forward to all your vids covering ashes. I look forward to the next vid and thanks for all your hard work man. Take care 😊
I like this idea of actually being punished when you die.
Having played PoE hardcore a bit, I found that the tense nature of having something to lose makes it more enjoyable.
Can't just auto pilot forces you to engage
I agree. PoE and even D3 hardcore gove that feel and it is a welcomed approach for me to the MMO genre
This is the problem with this game they are 'saying' a lot with absolutely no proof its going to happen. This is going to be Star Citizen all over again - over hyped, under delivered
Shit on it before it's even released? Dude, calm the fuck down already.
@Rheumattica and what innovation would that be?

i actually really really like this format of video. Narration of you playing something, broken down to the most important parts, while also discussing concepts in detail with the benefit of time to think back on your experience. Super fun to watch and more detailed than a first impressions video would allow. Not at all saying first impression videos are bad, or you should replace them with this, I love the first impression videos, but I definitely think you should consider making more videos like this for variety.
Looks like we're finally getting that EverQuest sequel we *actually* wanted.
This is *NOT* an EverQuest sequel, not even CLOSE. The pillars/base design dont even correlate.
@@poisonated7467 Yeah, maybe Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen will be more like EQ, if that game ever releases.

@@TheDrnknmnky That's a pitty for you as it's actually a hybrid. From what I saw in the video you switch between the two with "z". Hey Peon. I wound up getting into the kickstarter back in 2017 thanks to your video. So glad the game is coming along well and it looks like it will eventually be complete. Can't wait to see Steven's glorious game! Thank you for doing what you do
There is something appealing with this game that I can't quite tell what.
Player agency. The game lets you decide what you want to do, not force you down a linear path.
Because it shifts away from common MMO of this type - no handholding quest markers, actually immersive massive world and building scale that is reasonable and realistic with proper UI design unlike most crowdfunded MMO out there with horrible UI
Yeah, i feel the same. I think it has the potential to be one of the best, if not the most, polished mmos we've ever seen.
Bye ESO🥲this game is frickin’ beautiful!
That view from the mountaintop is so majestic!
You can actually see the quest's target location in the map as red dots. No exploration was needed.
@Rheumattica That's not a good analogy.
@@ohihassan693 I meant AFTER you take the quest, the map tells where to go.
@@ZiIIous I think I addressed that too by saying "knowing where to find something is different from actually finding it"
One example is finding the two soldiers, I have watched 4 streamers streaming AoC, from Asmongold to Jilon, all of them struggled to complete that quest even though map was showing where the objective is.
Game looks good, I just hope we are at least 2 years away from actual release. The combat needs serious work, and will make or break this game.
The combat should be fun and satisfying without any further context in my opinion.
this game is probably coming out late 2023 or late 2024.
I actually love the scale of this!! LOVE IT! I also like that there's no "here kill this, done? ok go back, speak to this npc, ok back to the cave, kill that next in the same cave" endlessly.
I'm actually kind of excited for this game now. And I don't know why but that player recognizing you just seemed so cool to me. Great video man
I understand the loot part and I reaaaaally love getting that super rare loot from a boss or mob, but the loot system they implemented kindda makes sense.
My man, keep up the good work.
Also 8:43,
ESO: Run on the back of the horse while the horse itself is running.
AoC: You are the horse.
8:52 I read that as Shit Coiner Occultist. It's 2021 sounds valid enough.
Thanks for your thoughts. I looking forward to this game. Might be time to upgrade my prehistoric PC. Love how you can just wander around, explore and discover quests from NPCs. Thanks again for your thoughts.
Thank you for posting, oh by the way the voice over wasn’t bad at all !

Can't wait for this New Worlds patch to land! Looks great
You were in my guild during this test haha. With that name was obvious :P
this is starting to look really good! the combat is already much nicer to look at. super excited to see how it will evolve further
Rewarding players with faster leveling when doing harder content is the way to go.
I'd hold off with making assumptions on progression, until at the very least Alpha 2.
I will use your code good sir. It was you coming up in my recommended that introduced me to this game. You deserve it.
It’s like Steven said. “MMO’s is a maturing genre. Older people play them.” Younger people want instant gratification. We really need the genre to keep going. Makes you wonder if AOC fails.... will the genre go extinct?
Yeah I think it would tbh
@@nadavalkaslassy7197 yeah maybe not though man. The market is still there. IF someone can do it right they have a gold mine under them.
@@RavenL1337 All MMOs nowadays are a cash grab. They all follow the same format too. Ashes of creation is trying to be its own thing.

@@jostra7 nah i dont mind how BDO and other mmos work, its just that i already spent a lot of time in FF that getting into something else thats similar or rather another mmo is a lot harder for me

" I went back to the Sergeant." Clearly says Lieutenant above the NPC. Lol

That you can see all the places you could go to (around 5:15) is so cool
Using that wand makes this look like a Harry Potter mmo.
Not really. I would love a Harry Potter mmo though. Sucks Hogwarts Legacy is planned to be a single player RPG.
"combat feels like a mix of Archeage and Guild Wars 2" - that sounds perfect to me.
Don't want to go full BDO (again)
I played tons of Mmo from target to tab combat but Action combat is the most engaging for me. Especially the combat of BDO, I need to combo my skills and memorize the hot keys. And it takes practice. I really hope they stick on action combat
@Rheumattica I don't understand this. From a PVP perspective, how can you possibly balance tab target combat without it being a gear check at every level? If there's no way to avoid skills, what's the point? What's stopping someone from having a ton of gear and clicking on someone to drop an un-avoidable meteor on someone's head that they can't dodge or i-frame out of?
This feels like a game that you REALLY want to take your time with. Not rushing it, but just taking it all in
The only way to take it all in. Well, unless u on crack or something.
Ah yes quests, I can feel the mmo genre revitalized already.
FFXIV is the only real mmo out there right now. Subjective opinion, but given the sheer density of the game, this just looks mediocre; even if it’s just alpha.
@@Section.9 And to me ff is a mediocre looking, not my type of gameplay mmo. Each to their own it seems! I rather play wow classic (which I despise)
@@Section.9 I can see someone hasnt played the original EverQuest before!
EQ set the precedent for MMOs today and inspired a lot of WoW's gameplay designs because EQ was competition. To say Brad McQuaid was the "Father of MMOs" isn't an exaggeration even.
I'm glad to hear about the grinding, nothing feels more pointless than a quest-sim like Lost Ark where combat is rendered utterly pointless
This game has some great ideas and the detail in some places are pretty impressive. Ultimately I feel like the different elements struggle to find a unified theme or identity. It's only alpha so lets hope things are closer to where New World is at.
Meanwhile new world is released :D
seems pretty promising, considering this is Alpha 1. Should be better in Beta or even better in Full Release.....right? 😅
