  • There are 3 basic ways to set up the focus while using video on the Fuji XT2. Two of these methods are auto focus and the third is manual focus. This is a short demonstration of those options and some thoughts about when to use each.

    Thanks Thor! I am in my hotel room in Panajachel, Guatemala, getting ready for my shoot early tomorrow morning. Your tutorial on focus came just in time!

      Susan Kalina glad to help. good luck with the shoot. learning by doing is better than UA-cam!

    Great info! Thanks for posting this. I haven't played much with auto focus options on my X-T2 in video mode. I've always shot in manual focus - coming from years shooting big betacams. This may prove to be very useful when the camera is on the gimbal I just ordered.

      crmixman I think you'll find it helpful in the right situations. one thing to be mindful is there may be sound associated with the focusing. using an external mic will help eliminate that noise.

    For a photographer that you do not do that much video, you really did a good job!

    good job, some helpful tips / One thing about the Fuji xt2 and xh1 etc is that they have very deep and extensive menu systems which will definitely be completely overwhelming for the newbie and even for the casual intermediate......there is a lot to learn if you want to master this camera to pull the best quality from it - and that is top notch footage and stills. These really are fabulous cameras for quite a reasonable price. I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of footage I was capable of producing handheld with the XT2's kit lens, the 18-55 f2.8-4 - Fujinon glass is becoming world renowned for its' quality - though, it has yet to match Zeiss or Leica's top glass but then again a fuji prime lens doesn't cost 12 grand, the price of a new Leica Noctilux 50mm f.95

    Thanks for the video, recently got an XT-2 and as I've been using my iPhone and GoPro recently to capture some great video, I am very keen to get out there with the XT-2 now.

      I know there are many videographers who would go for other cameras, but I primarily shoot stills and video is secondary. It is good to know the XT2 is capable for many applications. Good luck!

    Step 1 of getting good video: Adjust exposure

    Thanks that was a really helpful video.
    What if the switch in front of the camera (M,C,S) is set to S and in the AF menu it is set to Multi? which one will it take?
    I shot a video with my 50mm f2 @ f2 perture and I find the camera to struggle with the focus as my video kept on blurring. I had 2 subjects taling to each other

    Thanks for the video! I’m also new to video but I’m mostly a photographer and the xt-2 is the only camera I have with autofocus so I’m trying to make it work for a while.
    You are right, not changing the autofocus point is a very challenging and I’ve found myself out of focus waaay too many times. I now use a manual lens for Vlogging as it’s more reliable.
    Subbed! Fuji video guys have gotta stick together :)

      Thanks for the comment. You may consider turning on the facial detection if you are doing vlogging and pointing the camera at yourself. The tracking is pretty good. I am thinking about picking up an X-A5 because of the 180 screen for just this purpose.

    too much contrast - your highlights are near blown out - right on the verge......just curious, did you shoot this with the xt2 and if so what lut did you use....did you dial back your color, tone, sharpness etc? looks like ou have it on auto ISO? I am just learning this camera myself so I am curious as to your settings as your video looks quite bad - no offense meant but the footage is very cold with way too much contrast =otherwise informative job, thanks man

    can't you increase the size of the area focus box?

    • @THORtography
      @THORtography  7 років тому

      carmas54 you can change the size of the focus area with stills but not video.

      thanks I spoke to Fuji today and they were honest enough, which is appreciated and told me that the next version of the XT2 will be capable having it in video mode ask well, he was saying that won't come out for another year, I think sooner, but it will be available, I don't think the constant AF is available in video mode either. thx

    otherwise a very informative video - I really do not mean to bash you ....i am sure I would not get any better quality to start with either....just curious....that is all - thanks for your time !

      Hey thanks for watching. I know video is not my strong point, but I am learning by doing and practicing. I think I used the classic chrome out of the camera for this video, but have the shadows bumped up. If I were to do it again I would have shot this with a more standard coloration setting and turned off the auto white balance.

    • @drewcunningham2
      @drewcunningham2 6 років тому

      yea,"classic chrome" is an apt description of the look you had going there - I am just moving from canon to fuji so I have a big learning curve ahead of me as well - all the best to you - cheers man!

      @@THORtography yea, I thought the leaves actually looked quite good, it was more your face and the highlights behind you - far too bright verging on being blown right out//...yea, I have heard quite a few guys recommend the use of auto ISO but I don't think that is wise myself as it could keep changing quite dramatically through a long shot and you would lose your continuity....with my old canon 70d, which I loved for video, I would usually set a degree, Kelvin, when outside 5200 -5800 depending how bright it was - I also loved the touch focus on the LCD of the Canon as you could rack focus quite easily while filming and it looked really nice....Unfortunately, Canon has yet to make a good 4k DSLR video camera. Apparently, the Mark IV really sucks in the 4k department or I would have gone that direction but I just read too many negatives. Also, I have seen lots of really fantastic footage shot in 4k with the Fuji xt2, It really surprised me just how good and sharp it was and how the colors rendered. It was very impressive to be sure! I also like to have a headphone jack to monitor audio and it is light enough for my moza gimbal. The biggest drawback, for me anyway, is how extensive and different the menu system is than Canon which I have been shooting with for more than 20 years when shooting 35mm. I also use a medium format Mamiya RZ pro II 6x7 - which is just fantastic for stills....best of luck to you, I am sure you will be shooting like a pro in no time at all - cheers!

    Why is it so much overexposed?

    • @THORtography
      @THORtography  4 роки тому +1

      That was my fault I'm still a rookie in the world of video.

  • @drewcunningham2

    turn you highlights down, you're blowing out the sky plus your face is snow white/////don't use acuto white balance - on a sunny day set it to 5400 degrees Kelven or there abouts
