I just picked one of these up locally a few months ago. I am a Canon shooter, owning the M50, 5d MkII, R7, and R5. I have to say, the XT1 is my favorite grab and go camera. I recently took it to a wedding in Washington DC, and became a 2nd shooter of sorts. I took all the images in B/W, and the family whose son got married, raved about them.
Keep up the good work, love all your videos on the M50, and more.

I bought an XT-1 about a year ago. It is honestly the best camera that I've ever owned. I also got a reaaly great deal on an XT-3 and 2 Fujifilm lenses. The XT-3 fills the need for great video and also takes great stills. Sometimes I take both cameas for pictures but I alway grab the XT-1 first. The XT-1 is a magical camera.

I'm a stills photographer (no need for vid) and I can't decide between the XT1 & XT3 - is the autofocus with a lens like the 35mm 1.4 noticeably better? is there any real difference in image quality - perhaps the XT3 is a bit sharper? I want this camera to be my 'just get up and go and just take photos' camera. Street, people, objects, scenes.

What I love about the X-T1 is the size being 'just right'. The X-T2 is big and 'professional', whereas the X-T1 feels like pure joy to me. Wish they'd go back to that size and I'd happily trade in features to accomplish that.

  • @danwichgames
    @danwichgames 11 місяців тому +8

honestly for the speed and usability it is well worth speeding a little more to get a xt3 or 4, or even a xh1. they are going to be way faster to focus, have more features including usable video, have more options for film sims and effect like film grain and black and white filter options, more buffer space for continuous shooting, faster write speeds to cards, and in the h1's case a way better feeling grip for larger hand. but the biggest reason i would not recommend anyone by a xt1 in 2024 is parts availability. The brand really did not start pushing numbers till the xt2, meaning there are way less xt1s and xt1 parts in the world for when they break down. I can tell you from experience that new parts are very rare and replenished parts are getting harder and harder to find. Most repair will end with fuji offering to replace the camera with a t3 or 4 at this point, because even if they do have a part, it is going to be more to repair than you paid for the camera. This is based on the North America region, you might live in a zone where more bodies sold than here or there is a lower demand for parts. I know i always loved the feel of the h1 over most of the t series cameras, but i also have huge hands. honestly from some one that handles a lot of fuji cameras, i think the best deal right now is the xs20 and the 18mm 1,4. just a great walk around combo with an amazing hand feel for its size and a jam packed feature set. it really ends up feeling like a xh2s for half the price and half the weight.

I shot the X-T1 & X-Pro 1 for weddings and reportage back in the day. Made enough dough to step up to Leica. But always try pick up a few of these Fujis every year for back-ups as the prices were low used. Not so much these days. 2 X-T1s and any of the 18mms and 35mms is all you need for a standard kit. I used to shoot with Fuji, I used X-E1/2, X-T10/20, X-T1/2. They were ok cameras, but weren't really that great, so I just dropped Fuji and was shooting with FF Sony and Nikon cameras. Nikon Z cameras are really great, love them, but they are bigger/heavier. I always wanted a smaller body for travel, so was keeping an eye on Fuji. That was until Sony came up with A7C and later with A7Cii/A7Cr. Those Sony cameras basically made all APS-C cameras, including Fuji (especially taking into account that Fuji still can't really make a good AF), totally unnecessary.

@@ElementaryWatson-123 Glad you found the camera that works for you. All cameras have compromises, and I am told the Sony’s are too clinical, need to dive into menus to make some changes other cameras have dials for, and yes have fabulous autofocus, dynamic range etc etc. I have two Fuji’s - older models and these are more than adequate and have a great colour science and look to the images. I also like older Canon bodies like 5D Classic and Canon 6D and these cameras shoot great stills and have great colours too. If I was more into video and needed crazy megapixels I’d maybe consider a Sony, but not my area of interest. It is great today we are spoilt for choice with newer cameras, but ones even from 10 to 15 years ago still hold their own if you know how to shoot with them.

I couldn't get hold of another X-T1 at a reasonable price, but found a barely used (almost new old stock) X-T2 for a great price. I do think the small upgrades are worth it (I could have bought an X-T3 or 4 at the time, but honestly couldn't see the value in going further up the chain). Short story, I remember the Fujifilm X-T1 was what made me fall in love with the proper mirrorless cameras. Because back then, my father had a Nikon d300 which I would use to practice street photography back in 2016, I was only like 16 years old at that time. Now when Fujifilm announced the X-T1, I was stoked and amazed at how beautiful the camera looked. It looked so timeless (both old and modern at the same time).
And then they released the X-T2, I was more excited because I literally couldn't stop thinking about the camera up until today =) there comes a time where I would ask my parents yearly if they could give me one because the Nikon d300 isn't getting any younger but they couldn't since it's out of their budget. Fast forward to 2023, I finally graduated college last 2021 and managed to save up money and buy the X-T2 paired with the 35mm f2 and 7artisans 25mm f1.8. I guess the breaking point for me was because film rolls are getting more expensive that time compared to when I was shooting film last 2019. Going back, It is still one of my best purchases ever, and the X-T1 and 2 are still so powerful as photography cameras up to date. I never do video at all so I'm super duper satisfied even though the X-T2 is old now. Anyways, I think that cameras don't age as fast as smartphones which I'm totally glad. I plan to stay with the X-T2 maybe for 5-7 or maybe 10 years more if I can, I'm still justifying if I can upgrade to more recent Fuji cameras. I just love this camera so much, I feel like my inner child is so happy since I longed for it dearly.

I am a huge fan of the X-T1 (and X-T10) cameras. Those two models are currently the best value for money in the system. Like you I really appreciate the focus assist button on the X-T1. I primarily use my X-T1's for manual focus and the X-T10's for AF (with a bit of crossover now and again). The X-T10 has better AF performance. Ergonomically I find the X-T1 almost perfect. It works for me either with a base plate like yours or with the battery grip. The later cameras unfortunately for my taste put on a bit too much size and weight. I have just two ergonomic criticisms. The drive mode is too easy to knock out of place and the rubber covering has a tendency to lift and peel. The 16mp sensor is more than plenty for almost anything except large amounts of cropping and produces nicer looking images IMO than the later ones.
A sensible choice of lenses recommended here. I would also consider the TTartisans 25mm and 50mm f2 pancake lenses. I would question though whether that TTarisans 35mm f1.8 is the best budget AF choice as the XC 35mm f2 can be had for much the same money, does not flare and is a touch lighter or a used XF WR version will not cost much more. A word or two on the 27mm f2.8. I find it better than Fuji's own, especially when it comes down to handling and AF. Yes, it vignettes a bit but if you remove the hood less so. The front element is already well recessed so you don't really need it for protection. Don't throw it away though as it fits on the TTartisans 35mm f1.4 very well, protects the front element, cuts out flare and barely changes the profile of the lens. As my copy is a slightly different shade to the lens, it provides a really nice aesthetic touch to the lens's appearance.

Got the X T1 ( less than 200 actuations), with a Sigma 56mm F1.4, Fujifilm Grip VG-XT1, Fujifilm Flash EF-42, 4 batteries and Dual battery 2-input charger for under $900 CDN (around $650 US). I love the look and feel of the old style Fujifilm cameras. 16 MP is a bit low these days, but unless you're cropping it should be plenty. Thanks for the indepth look at the camera. Cheers

XT-1 is pretty solid but one con that is annoying is the focusing glitches. I'm not sure if there was a firmware to fix this issue but when I went to the XT-2. WOW. X-T2 blows it out of the water. Everything is improved. Now if you are needing more video work, definitely go up to the T-3 or T-4. But if you are only wanting a camera body for stills. Then the X-T2 is the best bang for your buck. I like it better than my Sony A7 ii. I would suggest getting the X-T2 used and invest in a pretty dang good lens and you are solid for a very long time.

Before you revealed the model (X-T1), I knew it was the unit you were talking about. I still have mine. It was the gateway drug into the Fujifilm ecology that has cost me thousands of dollars. (Ahahahahahahaha) Don't get me wrong, I have no regrets about buying Fuji products and I will keep my X-T1 (and use it). And, I agree with you that an individual looking to get into APS-C format photography can do no better than pick up a nice X-T1 and a selection of primes.
The kit lens (18-55mm f/2.8-4???) that came with mine is actually very good. It has stabilization, a useful set of focal lengths, and is relatively fast for a kit lens. (They are also not cheap on the used market.)
I used to obsess over sharpness and MTF of my lenses. Now I find myself buying vintage glass because I prefer the less clinical look for much of my photography. I notice that the best vintage glass is getting expensive because a lot of other photographers (and videographers) are buying up the supply because they produce such nice images.
    Now back to your video.
Arrrgggghhhhh... I can tell you're gong to cost me some money! I'll have to pick up some of the recommended lenses from your list.
I have the Fujinon 35mm f/1.4 in my bag right now. Although the newer (more expensive) 33mm f/1.4 is a great lens, I like the IQ of the older lens. I have read, but not confirmed, that it is based on the Sonnar formula and the results seem to confirm that.
I would also recommend the Fujinon f/2 lenses. They are small, less expensive, relatively fast, and produce lovely images. They are also autofocus. The new 27mm f/2.8 has an aperture ring and is weather sealed! Of course, they cost more although I still consider them budget lenses (for Fujinon glass).
    Great video... thanks!

In my opinion, if you are going to get a 35mm F1.4, I would pick the Fuji one, yes it's 3 times the price of the TTArtisan one but you will have a much better time with it and it's overall an excellent lens to keep should you ever decide to invest moire into the Fuji X mount lenses line-up.
Sames goes for the 27mm, if the idea is to go stealthy, the Fuji is smaller and a lot less prone to vigneting full open, unlike the TTArtisan where you ideally prefer to start shooting at F4, but at almost 3 times the price difference I can understand why the cheaper option is more appealing but the Fuji one is also Weather Resistant, so more forgiving too use under light rain.
I have had my X-T1 since the release back in 2014 and while I really love that camera it's slowly showing its age, I will be upgrading toward the X-T5 that finally give me a reason to move up in the body, the IBIS is a feature I have always wanted to have as I shoot with a lot of legacy lenses (Super Takumar 105mm F2.8, Helios 44-2 58mm F2, ...) and those lenses could really use the extra stabilisation.
Funny how the Auto focus was one of you positive point of the camera when it was maybe one of its most glaring weakness back in the days, Fuji had to release several FW update to correct the issues with it. Nowadays, it's all fine if your subject is mostly immobile or move less than a brisk walk.
Another point of attention, anything higher 6400 iso get really noisy and the X-Trans is more complicated to de-noise than the classical Canikony bodies. Most image editing software have made league of progress compared to back in 2014 but X-Trans still remain a "non standard" sensor and is known to be a bit more finicky to adjust your raws in some fringe circumstances.

I used one up till earlier this year when Dad gave me his broken X-T30 (which I had repaired and now use). I almost prefer the X-T10 because, like the saying goes, "less is more" and its simpler and has less settings and slightly less features, so its easier to use and easier to get stunning photos.

I own an X-T1 and I kinda do not agree with the statement that's it's a pro camera that you can build your career on. It may have been this way in 2014, but it clearly isn't the case anymore in 2023, for one very specific reason : Video. And if you're taking a camera for pro work in 2023, you cannot not have decent enough video.
Video on the X-T1 suuucks really really hard. You can't configure the image, you can't choose how the camera is taking the video the only thing you can change is the resolution and frame rate. The dynamic range in video is abysmal, you have no shadow recovery whatsoever, the highlights clip super easy, you have very bad pre-amps if you want to record sound, and maybe most importantly the autofocus is useless in video. It's very much a photo camera only.
Also, I do not agree that the autofocus is great. It's fast for AF-S shooting, as long as you stay within the center phase detect points, but it's pretty lost for anything else. AF-C is very slow and very unreliable. Tracking? Forget it. It's fast and snappy enough that you can use it for slow moving subjects using AF-S but that's it. To me that's not "great autofocus", my D60 from 2008 has better AF-C than the X-T1.
Now, if there was ONE very high value Fujifilm camera that I'd recommend, that would be the X-T2. The leap between the X-T1 and X-T2 is not at all reflected by their difference in price.
For 100 to 150 USD more than an X-T1, you get :
    - accurate continuous focus, with tracking that actually works and is fully customizeable. The difference is huge. I cannot rely on the X-T1 to do portraits in AF-C, I shoot sports and BIF on an X-T2
    - better controls : you have a back joystick to change focus points, the ISO dial isn't locked by default (which is annoying when shooting a gig), and both dials are lockable with toggle switches instead. You can repurpose pretty much all the buttons on the camera (thing that you can't do on the X-T1) except the Q, back and menu button. Command dials are now click-able, adding more buttons (and keeping the focus assist function of the X-T1)
    - 50% more resolution and about a stop better high ISO performance and dynamic range, with a faster readout for electronic shutter (which can shoot up to 14fps with AF-C)
    - a second UHS-II card slot
    - a dual axis tilt screen (if you shoot portrait orientation a lot, this is absolutely huge. I know it was for me)
    - a higher refresh rate viewfinder (50Hz in the X-T1, 100Hz in the X-T2 reducing latency and improving your reactivity)
    - GOOD 4K VIDEO with internal Log profiles, free LUTs provided by Fuji, the access to 1080p120fps and good pre-amps on the microphone jack for extrernal microphones (+ headphone jack on the vertical grip)
    - Decent video autofocus (similar to photo side of things, you can customize it)
    - way better menu system
    - more film simulations
Not mentionning the fact that you are getting all the same things that the X-T1 already has (magnesium alloy body, weather sealing, X mount, etc)
the cost for it? The camera is 2 to 3 mm wider and heavier by 50g. And the colors are not as warm out of camera (that's a good thing, the X-T1 can produce images that are way too warm which is a pain to correct in post). That's about it.
Buying an X-T1 for 300 when the X-T2 is available for 400 is wild to me, if that wasn't obvious. The X-T2 is a camera that I can use professionally without any issues, while the X-T1 is full of them.
The price difference is SO WORTH IT, could triple it and I'd still go with the X-T2 instead.
(by the way, did you know you could do RAW conversions directly to the film simulations you want in the playback menu instead of shooting film simulation bracketing which is unpractical to say the least?)

The sensor has just a lovely look, and I don't feel that there is much room for improvement. I'm about to turn 76. I'm about to ditch.....well...retire to studio and teaching only. my 2 Canon 80Ds replete with battery hand grips. When I add the lenses that I use (10-24, 24-70 and 70--300) they weigh in at almost 8lbs each. I need the auto focus, the anti shake lenses and the little audible chirp that the Canons give me when they focus (yes, my vision is that bad). I've been looking at mirrorless for a year and have been flummoxed by the vast number of really good devices on the market. You have totally sold me on the Fuji line. they seem to meet or exceed my needs at the price point I can reach I need two bodies, as near to identical as possible. I am crap at video so I don't need that. I have been editing in Photoshop (I experimented with capture One when it was still free and found Affinity pretty neat and the price would let me stick my proverbial thumb in the eye of the Photoshop CLOUD mafia. I would never edit in camera.
I will be following your lead and I thank you for your guidance

I still use it too.. along with X-Pro1 and X-Pro2, depending on the mood, where I go and the ... colour of the camera body I feel at the moment. They are all good, maybe the Pro1 is a little slow if compared to those others. Really great machines, I paid them around your price, I see I can have all of my money back if I sell them today (save for the Pro2 thay I bought new, sealed, in a real shop). I own also a pretty Canon EF reflex system, and I'll be damned if I sincerely have a single reason to keep it, save for primal fear of losing those large zoom "appendices"...

Great images, unless you want to use AF to get moving images. Yes, you can go manual for this, as in the old days, but these aren't the old days. Great for static subjects or street photography. Getting a few shots in focus, if someone is walking or running, then good luck.

I was wondering when the XT1 would get its due. I switched from Canon to Fuji and there's something special about the stills on the XT1 especially with the film recipes. I always get asked if my photos are edited, and people are blown away that they're straight out of the camera

❤Oh, I've got the X-T2 and I think it's a real upgrade in any way!
And I've got the X-T3 which is an extra update in terms of autofocus.

They look like they have went up again. Just looked at Ebay and they are all around 500.00 plus. I had one at one time and wish I had kept it. The 16mp had a more film look in the images. As for me now, still rockin the X-T2

    Good content, sir.
I'm still using mine professionally for weddings, architecture work, street photography, and every other work that needs a camera 📷 to take pictures.

I would add the Fuji XC 35 f2 (for around 170€ in Europe) as a very good and inexpensive AF recommendation instead of the yet unreleased TTArtisan 35 f1.8 (lens 6). The Fuji is lighter, smaller and has a much narrower minimum focus distance of 35cm instead of 60cm.
A few months ago, I switched from a Nikon D7200 to a used Fuji X-T20 and was very lucky to get a defective one for just 180€. The internal buffer battery is dead, so it loses all settings when the battery is removed. But I can live with charging the camera via USB cable. Together with a new XC 35 f2 I got a great starter kit for just 350€. 😁 And with an inexpensive Nikon - Fuji adapter I can use my vintage Nikon lenses (105 f2.5, 50 1.8, Micro 55 3.5).

the X-T1 was my first Fuji camera in 2014, and even though I own other Fuji X-T Models I bought a second X-T1 a couple of years ago, new and costing only a fraction of what I paid for my first body. Still love that camera.

Sweeeet, almost got that as my first Fuji received few weeks ago the X-T2 after much research and pricing, seemed perfect. So one model up, couple hundred more but sensor and last one to be made in Japan. I love it!

    • @stephen-wahl
      @stephen-wahl 8 місяців тому

@@viencafeoh on the pricing, I actually misspoke. I had been looking at another model the E-t10 and that was twice as much as the xt1. When I looked now and the prices have gone up it's crazy they're close to a thousand bucks in Canada for the xt2 (on eBay) any xt-1 is about $800 or so by comparison. So 25% more I guess, the extra features and I was more interested in the x-trans sensor II which is in the xt2 rather than the original sensor in the xt1.

what is the smallest zoom lens that zooms the most that you can get for fujifilm? anything in the 10 to 15x range but not a huge lens. I want something small portable and contemplating the olympus om10 IV with the panasonic 14-140 (200g + ) lens Does Fujifilm or any 3rd party make anything even close? maybe 250g or 300 given that its apsc vs micro-four?
