Excellent video. May I add, as a Professional Painter, the other reasons for mesh tape failure include whomever made the repair did not sand the surface before applying the tape, although it's self sticking, it needs a "bite", specially on surfaces with a sheen. The other big reason I see it fail is the crack was not "V'd" out, using either a razor knife or the sharp end of your 5in1, slightly gouge the crack so the mud had something to bite into. Thanks for all your knowledge.

I even sprayed the ceiling with popcorn and it's all good except for moisture in the kitchen got to some of it. It's not rocket science but listen to this guy he knows what he's talking about. I must be living on a different planet. I've been using mesh with bucket mud for years and have almost never seen a problem; it was usually on my own property or at a building I maintained, so I would have seen it. Once in a while, if a crack already has a history of movement, I'll coat the mesh with paint, caulk or glue before mudding it, but that didn't happen often. Maybe it's because I'm just using a knife or trowel, not one of those box things on a pole. I have seen paper tape fail more than mesh, usually peeling off the wall because someone used too little mud.
PS: Looking at the other comments, it occurs to me that pre-filling might be the reason I've had so little trouble with the combination. Also, I have a habit of tucking the mesh into the gap a little if it's more than maybe 1/8", then filling the valley on the next coat.

I agree. This and other videos get me scratching my head even though I have done thousands of feet of mesh tape with bucket mud. I never had any cracking problem. Am I missing something here?

The thing is, it’s kind of like speeding 20 miles an hour over the speed limit, you’ll get away with it for a long time and then one day, Bam. Just go read the manufacturers website and you will see they absolutely recommend against regular mud and mesh. And I myself have had it fail but then I’ve been installed over 500 rolls of it. Thanks

@@ThatKiltedGuyDIY Did you take down my reply?
Once again, the Lowe's Home Improvement instructional video simply says to apply pre-mixed joint compound. Fast setting goes unrecommended.
"PatchPro" product info says: "Apply a thin coat of all purpose joint compound over the Patch Pro drywall mesh tape. Let dry 24 hours. Sand to smooth finish. If necessary, apply a second coat of compound. Let dry 24 hours. Sand to smooth finish. To avoid cracking or shrinking, use only fast setting compound." While recommended, it is a written as a tag on, and clearly there is no hard, fast rule. But sure, it is best.
On the "ProForm" website, there is no indication against applying ready made, all purpose joint compound to mesh tape.
The question seems principally to do with surface area being porous, and needing to apply a very thin coat first round (and perhaps being certain to apply the tape well). When doing extensive lengths of seams (as opposed to patch jobs), using quick set requires another hand to keep up with mixing and constant cleaning to keep the mud moving smoothly.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  2 роки тому +2

If you guys would watch my whole videos and not skip so much, you would see that at two minutes and 10 seconds of this video I provided proof that the manufacture of the mesh tape says you must use fast setting joint compound. And every manufacture of mesh tape says the same thing. I think they know more about how to apply it correctly than any of these other sources you’re quoting.
Relying on Lowes for accurate Drywall information is like asking your two year old because they put out some of the worst information out there. Lowes is out to sell your products and that’s it.
And as I’ve explained before, I have put on well over 500 rolls of mesh tape in my life and the only time I had failures was when I didn’t use fast setting joint compound.

Thank you so much for all your videos! I just finished my entire garage. I still suck but I suck a whole lot less than I used to and my new level of sucky-ness can be corrected through sanding. I sure appreciate your (and others) videos turning me on to ‘hot mud’ and flat boxes and how to apply pressure to one side of the blade to feather the mud to minimize sanding. You rock!

Good advised.I knew that long time ago and had been telling my other drywall finishers who are using regular joint compound for the first application on the mesh tapes but to no avail. So eventually hairline cracks will show up after the painting is done. The excuse is foundation or something else shifting. I had many arguments with my other drywall finishers because of this one issue.I have been doing this work since 1975.

Trying this on a job now. The owner got paranoid about me using mesh tape ( I use paper on inside corners and ceiling corners of course) and I was using all purpose. I am reluctant to use paper tape because it is too time consuming and if you don't do it right it has its own set of problems (bubbles and tears)
I watched this video, and told the owner to pick up some 90 minute easy sand durabond, and I will be using that going forward on this project. The other advantage of mesh is that you can do the butt and factory joints at the same time, and now, using the durabond, I can do the second coat on the same work day. Thanks man!!

We are running into ceiling repairs that are failing when using 5 minute hotmud and mesh tape on a knock down ceiling. It seems to always be a bad butt joint that cracks in a hallway or tray. The original paper tape is solid, but the joint cracked. When repairing the paper tape is checked for bubbling/adhesion and seems to be fine.
So the area is scraped, any loose material is removed (usually very little will come off). Check drywall to see if it needs screws to prevent any movement. Run mesh and 5 minute, let it set and then pull a tight coat with regular wait a bit and shoot the knock down.
In 2 instances recently, the entire repair has failed. Essentially, the mesh tape/hot mud has delaminated and can be scraped off with little effort. The original tape/knockdown is still stuck tight.
I have done hundreds of patches/crack ceiling repairs, and this is the first time im seeing this. Everyone is kind of stumped. The two head guys have over 25 years experience each and they are scratching their heads.

hey Steve, I have a UA-cam friend who has a very successful high-rise remodeling business and he said code requires mesh tape in the high-rises and they never have problems with it. By the way I lived in Albuquerque for several years, and Tijeras up the hill, and Los Lunas down the road. I was stationed at Kirtland Air Force Base for several years in the air National Guard.

Green lid - all purpose joint compound - has adhesives/glue inside it... If your drywall seams or cracks are reasonably tight and touching green lid and paper tape the first coat... It's got the glue in it and meant to be the base coat thats meant to stick to the surface it's being applied to the best... Now any cracks a 1/4 inch or wider lay the quick set mud in to fill them and once dry use the green lid to tape coat the cracks... Then green lid and or quick set the 2nd float coat... Then blue lid [easy sanding] for the 3rd or final float coat... In the old days of drywall [back in the 70's] the powdered bag quick set compound was mainly used for the corner bead areas... They'd slap on a coat of green [glue] then the powdered quick set and finish off with the blue lid... If people would use the mud in the correct way they'd not have tape fails or cracks appearing...

yeah for those not super experienced, I recommend 45 minutes. But I can actually spread a whole pan of five minute mud if it’s just on one repair, but then I’ve probably mixed up 10,000 pounds of hot mud, LOL. But I use a lot of 20 minute too. Only time I use 45 is if I'm mixing half a bucket or something.

Hmm after installing over 500 rolls of mesh (I’ve done nothing but repairs for overall 20 years) I’ve only had ONE that cracked later. Most of the cracks I’ve fixed had paper tape on them. I once removed the popcorn ceiling on a very large open concept living room/kitchen area including skylights and I found over 90 feet of cracks. I fixed them and came back three years later to do something else and not one of them had cracked. I think Prep is key.

  • @mikek3951
    @mikek3951 2 роки тому +6

    There’s a reason to this
The mesh has a very weak glue on it. Just enough to hold it in place.
Example. Many times you put it up and 1 min later it’s falling down.
Regular mud is a slow dry and if you put to much it cracks. Mesh tape and regular mud it shrinks just enough to pull mesh off not all the time though.
Hot mud doesn’t give it the chance to move and hot mud is completely different then reg mud.
    Now here’s a trick.
3m makes a great spray product
Spray glue. Put it on then mesh. Then regular mud and it won’t fail.
Corners. Staple on then mesh or paper and hot mud.
Reason. Hot mud is dam near cement and corners take a beating.
Yes it’s a extra step. But you’ll never have a issue

One time when I had that happen after the second coat of mud was on, I put on a real heavy bead of caulking and troweled that kind of flat like a Band-Aid about 1.5” wide. I made sure I had enough thickness to not crack after it dried and then I just put one more coat of mud over it and it was fine several years later. But make sure the first coats are sanded down flat enough so that you’re not building up a huge hump.
