I don't know how I can be even more impressed with George Harrison's guitar playing, singing, harmonizing, and gentle, humble stage presence, but after watching him play and sing with Paul Simon Simon's song Homeward Bound, I am totally gobsmacked. He is always so humble, as is Paul Simon. It would have been lovely if they had put out an album of acoustic songs together. Beautiful, just beautiful. Every time I listen to the Beatles or to one of them solo, it is a spiritual experience.
@@kevinskogg2179 Yeah humble loses all meaning there for Toney Lacey. I suppose his gentle charm gives off that vibe. Here come the Sun is good song that wears on you and becomes unctuous after many listens. Thanks that they followed it with a little more hard-edged Homeward Bound
I love these two - always have, but I would not use the word "humble" to describe them. Have you seen any of their interviews? Genius can be sharp, gentle, quiet, loud. But never humble.
George never understood how important his voice, music, - indeed, his presence - was to those of us who got him. Sure I loved the Beatles. Yes John Lennon. But he was the secret. He was that harmony between Paul's incredible range and John's powerful voice. He was always 'the man' to me. I play guitar, and have a small reputation as an aggressive hard rock/punk guy. But George was always my hero. He's been gone (it'll be) 22 years this coming November. That's how long my heart's been broken by his passing. I hope he's still hangin 'round when I get there.
Both of them treated the other's creation with the utmost respect in this duet. Great music. They should have recorded an album together. They certainly could sing together very well.
One very special moment in the history of music. George Harrison was 33 years old, in this SNL clip from 1976. The world is still missing the peace and love George brought in his music.
Interesting fact: In 2021, Israeli radio held a hit parade of all Beatles songs for 6 straight hours. It was quite an event. Thousands of people participated and chose their most beloved songs. The song reaching no. 1 was "Here Comes the Sun". 2nd and 3rd places were George's as well: "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps". Well deserved.
An absolutely brilliant musical event. No miming, pitch correction, auto-tuning... just two musical geniuses, clearly and appreciating playing with each other, live.
The Beatles get together to record the songs for Abbey Road. George says "I got this song called Here Comes The Sun". Rest of the band "You got anything else?" George "I have a song called Something." Yeah, but he couldn't write songs. On arguably the best rock record every recorded, George has the two best songs on it.
He really hit the ball out of the park in the 9th inning, didn't he? George seemed to gain strength on each Beatles record, until he proved once and for all that The Beatles had three world-class songwriters.
Paul said that it was clear to him and John that George was peaking during those last couple of years of the bands existence. He denied that he could have achieved greatness without John George and Ringo, and that he was incredibly lucky. The interviewer was incredulous. Paul replied, "how many times do four guys like that get together and you are one of them?" Well, the answer is one time.
check their spotify plays - Here Comes the Sun is the most played, with over 200 MILLION plays MORE than all the other songs, sitting at 600,000 plays. Come Together is the second highest, sitting at 385 Million approx. Suck on that Lennon.
@@jplmedley I respectfully disagree. There's never been a band like the Beatles and may never be again. Every record release at that point in time in history was exponentially better than the last. Even by today's standards their music is still excellent, especially considering it was done on 4 track tape. I know there are people that don't even like the Beatles, but I feel that's their loss.
George was the soul of the Beatles. Listen to how easily he fits in that middle harmony. All of them were brilliant, but George held it together. BTW: Imagine if Paul Simon and George Harrison wrote and made an album together!!
George Harrison would have been the brightest star in any other band. This is one of the most beautiful songs that anyone has ever written. It is even clearly in the top 10 Beatles maybe even top 5 Beatles songs.
I got chills listening to George sing homeward bound what beauty in their harmonies...I never knew they made this collaboration... I am pleased..thank you
Don't look at "Thumbs Down". Look at the percentage thumbs up to thumbs down. Here...let me calculate it for you since I graduated high school... 0.0089% of total viewers gave this a thumbs down. That is...fewer than 1 in 100 gave this a thumbs down. That's like 15 thumbs down for every 1500 thumbs up (which ain't too shabby). (Keep in mind how many morons voted for Hillary in the 2016 primary knowing that would give all of us Trump!) And never forget that Intelligence is a bell-shaped curve with 100 as the mean ....AND you have NO IDEA how STUPID a 100 IQ is. Ahem...i.e. not needing state assistance but NOT VERY GODDAMN BRIGHT!! That is to say - they are "More to be pitied than scorned." AND...we are doomed.
George contributed two number one singles on the last album the Beatles recorded. I think George was coming into his own even before he left the Beatles.
@@chloekey8043 No I'm not, I'm just sick of that statement it's so overused. Like who cares, we should enjoy music from all generations. And how am I jealous? I can easily search up songs from that era and have the same experience as you guys.
I remember watching this as a 5 year old with my parents. Yes, my parents let me stay up to watch "Saturday Night Live" with them, even at such a young age. I'll can still remember the exact look on my dad's face during this performance, such a mixture of delight and awe. His only comment during the song was something like: "What musicianship! Perfect harmony! This is exceptional!" and then my mom shushed him. I'll never forget this moment. Being a child of the 70's was awesome.
George was a Baritone while Paul is a Tenor. George handled the lower notes and Paul the higher notes, that is why they harmonized so perfectly together.
this song was the last played at a dear friend of mines funeral. he took his life at 14 years old, and knew that this was the song he wanted to play him off into the next chapter. this is the most beutiful rendtion of the most painful song that I know.

This is marvellous. George and Paul compliment each other perfectly. And as others have noted, the respect they have for the other’s song and musicianship really shines through. Two musical giants in beautiful harmony. A real treat. ❤
I love how much care and effort George put into his friend's song. You can tell he's very careful to not go too overboard yet get his verse just right, and then at the end Paul's face when he does that quick little finishing solo like a parting gift for Paul's song.
' _..he's very careful to not_ ' blow his lines, either as he puts the cue-card man to work throughout the course of this rendition of ' _his friend's song_ '

I remember watching this on TV when it aired for the very first time "Live", and thinking it was the greatest musical moment in TV history, save for The Beatles debut itself on Ed Sullivan. Now 44 years later, I realize that I was correct.
My God when Paul sings "here comes the sun" it's magical. His voice is so angelic and it fits the song so well. He and George's voices harmonize beautifully together.
Kyle Walker wellllll. I love George and his songs but he’s not among the world’s greatest, though i love all of his songs, and he’s my favorite beatle. Paul simon is on a whole other level to George.

@JC/DC Remember that there are many reasons for Dislikes, for example when someone loves the content so much that they're disappointed by the low video or audio quality of the posted version... Some people give 👎's when the video is cut badly at the beginning or end, has logos or watermarks attached etc., so it doesn't necessarily mean that people are dissing the actual performance. That said, it is hard to see what 65 viewers found to not like here!
Despite the poor image quality, arguably the best 6:39 of music ever recorded. Just acoustical pureness and voices with no gimmicks or background musicians and singers.
Absolutely beautiful. The sun rising is such a positive force in this world of viral chaos. Thankyou George. You became an intricate part of the universe far too soon.
Well, I’m not into the Beatles, but I’m surprised how good his singing voice is. This only thing I remember about him, is his death. I’m glad I can watch on him on UA-cam and listen to his singing.
Wow, how can someone not be into the Beatles? they created so much incredible music! 50 years from now, they will be looked at the way many people look at artists like Beethoven, Bach, Brahms & those artists from many years ago! Thank You John, Paul & George for the amazing music you wrote as the Beatles & after the Beatles!
Yes this performance shows how great George's voice can be. It would've been nice if this was incorporated more into the Beatle's catalogue. With Lennon and McCartney, I can see why George was overlooked, but their catalogue would have been improved if they exploited George's abilities more.
All four of them were... well, fab. It was the perfect melding of talents. And George and Other Paul work beautifully together here. I never tire of this video.
When I see this I wish I could travel back to in time with my family to Wading River, NY on a snowy night with a fire going in the fireplace and watch this live as it happened.
George's speaking voice and singing voice are like fine wines. What a gift! John and Paul undeniably had oodles of talent but George's contributions made them sound so much more refined. Give "Nowhere Man" another listen. It's kind of like how Roger Taylor's vocals made Queen sound better, even though Freddie gets all the credit.
When George sings lines in Homeward Bound by himself, you can feel all his years of experience pouring out so beautifully. Both of these talented men --- perfectionists with tons of experience. And I couldn't help but think that when George was singing 'each town looks the same it seems, the movies and the factories' like, was he thinking of touring the States as Beatles and every town must have looked the same. I feel that's what was going through his mind.
I"m with you. George's guitar was an integral part of the Beatle's sound, so precise and expressive in tone, texture, seffect, yncopated layering, and melodic beauty that perfectly expressed the essence of every song he graced that anyone who loves music or music history should love and feel grateful for his presence and all he gave us in music and in history. They don't come better. Such a special fine man. Paul Simon is right there as well. So grateful for both.
This looks like the SNL performance. I was watching this live when I was 8 yrs old. It triggered my love for music and guitars, and an attachment to George Harrison... Beautiful!
Correct -- this was a 1976 or so performance on early SNL by two legends. This and "Something" are my two favorites of George. Paul Simon is no slouch on the acoustic guitar either. Altogether a magical performance!
So absolutely amazing, Paul Simon and George Harrison definitely should have done more together. Absolutely flawless singing and guitar playing by both.
It's 1964. I'm sitting at our breakfast table at my grandparent's home in Lathrup Village, Michigan. Suddenly, the morning sunlight streams into the windows. My grandmother and grandfather look at each other and say at the same time. "here comes the sun!"
2020, New Zealand lockdown level 3. Rainy winter day. My granddaughter lydia, 6 going on 15, says,” here comes the sun!” I say: “There’s a song about that!” Lydia (slightly annoyed): “Opa, you say there’s a song about everything!” Ha, just enough time for me to find this excellent version and play it to her.
I and friends watched this episode on SNL live in 1976. Two legends, two friends, at the top of their game. Unforgettable, such an amazing time to be alive!
George would have been satisfied enough with the recognition he received and the opportunity that the Beatles had afforded him. Perhaps he is not as famous as Paul and John but, then, he never chased fame, nor glory in the human world. His spiritual journey and expansion was his life's glory, a blessing which he endeavored to share.
Often when two greats come together they are less than the sum of the parts, but this really works, they sound wonderful together. It just works. Also interesting to think how George seems like such a good collaborator, he was the heart of the Travelling Wilburys and I think the Beatles really needed him, he didn't want the spotlight he just helped make it all work.
I think the reason is they respect the songs and their egos take second place to the music. So often the individual’s pride take centre stage and the music takes a back seat - not so here - the music is front and centre!
Harrison’s solo work is the only of the Beatles to approach Beatles quality harmonies IMO. His role was vastly underrated he was a true genius of pop harmony
George was the glue that held the Beatles together he was a great songwriter that was suppressed by Paul and john who were good songwriters but he got few out and made him the best beatle George was great something is the best love song ever written frank sinatra said that

George hat uns ein wunderschönes Frühlingslied geschenkt. ❤
If television had ceased to exist after this broadcast, it would have served its purpose.
Well said
AMEN, Brother. My opinion:most TV shows and music are crap. No soul. Not much effort to put a good show on TV as well as the music on radio.
It did
Thank you Ben. I agree

So messed up to consider how young the Beatles were when they broke up.
Read the title. That's NOT George Harrison. That's Goerge Harrison. I think that's actually George Harrison's cousin, but I'm not sure...
My favorite album of all time is 33 1/3. Listen to it sometime. 1976.
I'd give this performance a 20 out of 10, with an additional three thumbs way up. ❤
Thank you for sharing!
How awsome !
My fav.songs too.
George was The Beatles unsung hero. The quiet magician in the corner who held most their inspiration within his peaceful demeanor. I always knew that!
Paul Simon's harmonizing abilities are astounding. Not to mention his great guitar playing.
Paul Simon's guitar playing is amazing. Listening to his guitar lines is like listening to another song within a song.
Pretty good with the whole lyrics thing, too. Kid's got a future.
yeah Paul and Artie G hated each other but harmonized so incredibly well ...
True and one time playing with Dylan he had to face him instead of beside him, because he wanted to harmonize
Paul Simon is a massively underrated guitar player. One of my inspirations.
I love it when two great artists sing each other's songs. It shows mutual respect.
LEFT HOME 1973 HAVENT BEEN BACK SENCE. ITS SO SAD 😞 ❤
@David-up7rv why haven't you been home?
An absolutely brilliant musical event. No miming, pitch correction, auto-tuning... just two musical geniuses, clearly and appreciating playing with each other, live.
The Beatles get together to record the songs for Abbey Road. George says "I got this song called Here Comes The Sun". Rest of the band "You got anything else?" George "I have a song called Something." Yeah, but he couldn't write songs. On arguably the best rock record every recorded, George has the two best songs on it.
George is the superior Beatle.
He was a phenomenal musician/songwriter.
One of the greatest blessings of my life is to have grown up with this incredible music. There will never be another time like those days.
so says every generation, my friend.
There will be an other time like those days. Something else that gooses your bumps.
George was the soul of the Beatles. Listen to how easily he fits in that middle harmony. All of them were brilliant, but George held it together. BTW: Imagine if Paul Simon and George Harrison wrote and made an album together!!
Call it Here Comes Mrs. Robinson.
John was the Soul of the Beatles.
George was the Sweet Necar that held it together. George was Beatles Secert Weapon .
All lFOUR were the "soul" of the Beatles. THATS why they were the Beatles.
How I wish that album had happened. It just flowed like a geyser from these two!
Love these two great songwriters.
George Harrison would have been the brightest star in any other band. This is one of the most beautiful songs that anyone has ever written. It is even clearly in the top 10 Beatles maybe even top 5 Beatles songs.

Paul Simon said that this was the easiest collaboration he had with anyone!
Awesome duet. They are both fantastic 😊
No auto tune, no processing. Just 2 great guitar players singing.
Patrick Downing And 2 great singers playing guitar!
Pure/raw talent at its best....something from a bygone era and lacking in today's music

The presence of a Beatle in the room must have made the audience feel in awe. George Harrison was my favorite Beatle of all. That voice……just magic.
My absolute favorite Beatle too.
Mine too.
And mine❤️
George was under--rated until they broke-up. Then he came into his own.
George contributed two number one singles on the last album the Beatles recorded. I think George was coming into his own even before he left the Beatles.
What an honor for Paul Simon to be able to play with George.
The honour went both ways.

Pure vocals, pure playing, pure songs.x

These are the best versions of both of these songs. Harrison and Simon compliment each other perfectly
George was a Baritone while Paul is a Tenor. George handled the lower notes and Paul the higher notes, that is why they harmonized so perfectly together.

I remember watching this on TV when it aired for the very first time "Live", and thinking it was the greatest musical moment in TV history, save for The Beatles debut itself on Ed Sullivan. Now 44 years later, I realize that I was correct.
I saw it also in its original. I was 9 years old! Was amazing!
a Beatle singing Paul Simon's song was always my wet dream and here it goes
I think I was 15? The music on early SNL was amazing every single week. This was special. Everyone at school was talking about it on Monday
Elvis Presley on the ed Sullivan show or buddy holly on the show were great moments in time
This was the most poignant moment ever on SNL. It hit me deeply at its original airing, and I’m so glad it has been preserved
The look on Paul’s face at the end when George does the little improvisational piece on the guitar. Priceless!

George was/is my favorite, too. Was a young teenager when Beatlemania began.

He was underrated in his contribution, particularly by Lennon and McCartney.
McCartney is GOD.
@@paxmule No, he just has the ego of one.

I and friends watched this episode on SNL live in 1976. Two legends, two friends, at the top of their game. Unforgettable, such an amazing time to be alive!
George Harrison was the driven force behind the Beatles, he sadly never got the honour he deserved.
WELL SAID.TOTALLY AGREE.
Two of the finest musicians/songwriters of our time. Together. How great is this?
Doug Chisam Wait till you hear of The Beatles
Wow the beatles? Never heard of them???
