I’m a male dental hygiene student in the UK, it’s getting much more common over here too! Out of 35 in my cohort there’s 5 guys and everyone gets along great 😊 I’ve certainly never had a patient complain!

I'm in a RDH program now. I'm halfway through. All women in my class but it's been great! I'd most definately suggest it for any men who are interested.
I started school when I was 30. It took 2 yrs for prerequisites and 2yrs to do the program. I wasn’t working a ton while I was in school. I did have a weekend job. It was a lot of work but definitely possible. I’m finished and working in the field now.
Don't let your age or gender deter you from what you want to do in life. My friend Debbie hangs drywall, does tile and flooring, and installs windows and doors. She's also 63 years old to boot.

No wayyyy!! I played tenors through Highschool, that's awesome!! I'm a guy and I'm seriously thinking about becoming a dental hygienist. I just shadowed some dental assistants and the dentist at a great dental office yesterday and I'm going again to see a more in depth procedure in the morning. I definitely want to shadow a hygienist though to get a better feel for what I would be seeking long-term so I'm gonna ask about that tomorrow. I've been noticing ways in which my personality and skills seem to align well with the profession. Any advice at all?

I earned my associate's in May 2021 and my Bachelor's in June 2021 (you only need an Associate's to be a clinician though!) Its a very rewarding field, and I love the instant impact my work brings to a patient's oral health

I am dental hygienist in Spain, but in Spain, hygienstias cannot anesthetize or do scaling and root planing, studying 2 years of higher education and we cannot carry out these tasks. They don't give us good training. So when I see your videos, it makes me very proud to see how good dental hygienist training is in your country. Hopefully one day we can be equal and we can apply anesthesia and work with more autonomy. In the UK, hygienist training is 2 years, is that right? And it's a HND. Is that so? I LOVE your videos. I identify as whatever I feel each day. But one can’t just wake up and say “hey I wanna be a dental hygienist!!” You have to take courses in science of biology and chemistry and be good at them. Isn’t that true. Also what did you play in marching band, snare, quads or bass?? I played marching snare and was ranked drum Sargent!!!
I'm a male but graduated a dental assistant program in 2019 and even got my RDA but struggled to find my first job as an RDA until earlier this year at an implant center only to find out they made me administer nitrous with a certification which in my state, TN, I'm pretty sure would be illegal and I got so overwhelmed and stressed there (even though the doc complimented me on my surgical assisting skills and was my first time really doing it) to the point of going back to my supermarket deli job and now I'm questioning if I ever wanna do dentistry ever again. I still have a desire to work in healthcare helping patients but I don't know if I should try another office or a different healthcare field entirely as I'm going through an existential crisis and hate to see my dental assisting diploma and RDA license go to waste. My RDA was renewed earlier this year and is good for two more years. I need some advice. Thanks in advance.
My advice would be to go to interviews at local dental offices and be clear with them on what training and licenses you have. The office should have the majority of the legal stuff covered. If you aren't sure you're qualified to do something, say something. Don't let your hard work and time go to waste! If you liked the time you spent working as a RDA, then get back to it! If you didn't like it, try to pinpoint why and go from there. All the best!

So I brush my teeth before breakfast but after breakfast my mouth doesn’t feel clean of course but I don’t want to brush my teeth both before and after breakfast because I’m not sure if that’s okay? Soo I was wondering that would it be okay to brush my teeth before breakfast and then after breakfast I just floss and use a mouthwash? Or is it okay to brush before and after breakfast? I think I want to become a RDH but I’m really scared that I won’t be able to find work being that I’m a male. I’ve heard of all the “males being rough” & “not feeling comfortable with a male hygienist” negatives. I KNOW within my heart how gentle i am & how caring I WOULD be with every person I worked with/on. But explaining that to patient or employers I feel would be much easier said than done. I’m so lost.

You say that 35% of dentists in US are female and you seem surrised about that, but those numbers to me seem kind of low, at least compared to europe. For example, here in Portugal, around 80% of dentists are female, and the numbers keeps increasing, just like in the other health professions
Oh wow that’s amazing! Yes! For the longest time in America - the number of female dentists was SO low - so I was happy to see it’s getting closer to 50/50! So awesome to learn that about Portugal!

I use mouthwash after every brushing... which is twice a day at the moment but I’m getting Invisalign in the coming weeks so I gather that will increase.
In Hebrew the word for a dental hygienist (shinanit) is feminine, so if a male practices it, it would be kinda weird. Personally I've never seen a single one.
