  • *Heavy Spoilers*
Find out how the developers of A Plague Tale: Requiem used different game mechanics to help players empathize with the traumatic events experienced by Amicia and Hugo de Rune.
The goal of game developers is to make players empathize with a game’s characters and in A Plague Tale: Requiem, this is no different.
Whether it be excitement, a sense of power or crippling fear, developers must find a way to transfer emotion from the game to the player.
But how do game designers communicate more complex concepts like morality or severe emotional trauma?
The answer lies in how they gamify emotion.
    A Plague Tale: Requiem Overview
After escaping their devastated homeland, Amicia and Hugo travel far south, to new regions and vibrant cities. There, they attempt to start a new life and control Hugo’s curse.
But, when Hugo’s powers reawaken, destruction return in a flood of devouring rats. Forced to flee once more, the siblings place their hopes in a prophesized island that may hold the key to saving Hugo.
Discover the cost of saving those you love in a desperate struggle for survival. Strike from the shadows or unleash chaos, overcoming foes and challenges with a variety of weapons, tools and unearthly powers.

@@stayathomedev well, they can't possibly be wrong for expecting a more positive ending. Not necessarily a "happy" one, like, you know, in Uncharted games. But definitely not this. Perhaps something ambiguous. But where the little one has one last shot at resisting crossing the point of no return. A player is not only left emotionally damaged (I literally had to go to a psychologist because of this game's ending - it's a testament to how hard it struck and drained me).
To me, the best possible solution would've been a story that after a certain point can branch out based on choices made in the past, so you can have 2 different endings, or even 3.
This was not good. Just not good and I still refuse to accept it. It was executed in a good enough fassion, I'll respect that, but I still hate it.

@@ninogamingvariety6594 More and more games and tv shows are going for the opposite and slowly the grim outcomes and endings are in a danger of becoming a cliche, just as "lollypoop happy endings" were in previous decades. Killing off main characters, whether it makes sense or not within the context of their stories is slowly approaching becoming a norm.
And as for this game "showing us reality"... Yeah, I contest that too, because regardless of how good it is done, it's still riddled with some illogical events, plot devices and similar things that obviously tried to force down our throats that Hugo must die regardless of what happens. But then again, those deficiencies probably just serve to illustrate that - yes, this was the intention of developers. I hate it tremendously, but accept it.
And last but not least, don't fall for the false dichotomy, the fact that I despise what happened doesn't automatically mean that I'd insist on a polar opposite version of an ending being implemented.

Interesting. For me, I like they added another ending. As we saw in the dream before Amicia reached Hugo, he told her to move on and that she's not alone. So having Lucas to kill Hugo if we as Amicia delayed the inevitable long enough actually showed that Amicia in this scene was never ready to let go off her brother. So in the credit where she didnt care about Lucas update, when Sophia asked, it makes sense. The effect of violence on Amicia BTW is even more drastically implemented in the game, but not shown, because during the cutscene the camera faces away from the scene: In the first chapter, when Amicia is attacked by the farmers and the camera focuses on Hugo observing her being choked and bringing out the rats, the motion capture performance of Amicia being choked to death is actually playing out off camera. When you go into photo mode and turn the camera around, you can see Robyn Wolf's motion capture performance, and you can see the panic and fear on Amicia's face. If you put the camera above the scene, you can actually see that Hugo is looking directly at Amicia's face and sees her panic and how helpless she is with the two large men above her, pinning her down and choking her to death. Becoming aware that Amicia is about to die, makes him unleash the rats and triggers his progression. It is also very likely the event Amicia is refering to, when she later in the game becomes bloodthirsty and kills the soldiers shouting out, that she is tired of being scared. I don't know why the director decided to not show Amicia's fear, and instead only showing Hugo. Either the scene was too brutal, or it was not finished in time. You can see photos of that scene with Robyn Wolf's performance for Amicia on the IMDB page of the game.

A Plague Tale: Requiem did what The Last of Us Part 2 tried and failed to do by giving us a brutal and unforgiving world and a meaningful death to a major character that humanizes them and doesn't try to be so pretentious about it. It also doesn't just continuously break apart Amecia with absolutely no pay off. By the end there is a glimmer of Hope, If only a glimmer. (Until the after credits scene that is) It also doesn't try to force you to like The Count by being like "Oh look see, this guy went through war and was just trying to make Emilie Happy, Everyone is morally grey because it's an awful world and they're just doing what they need to". It's so stupid.

The bond we create with the siblings is rarely seen in any narrative games and that made it very hard to watch how the story ended as you spend the last 25 hours (adding both games) trying to protect this innocent 5 yo trying to enjoy life and a brave teenage girl giving her all to protect her little brother. I'm not convinced all design decisions translate as well as you outlined. The skill development never felt so intertwined with the character psyches as you suggest. Extending the in-game plots (how much is Amicia killing people, how much is Hugo straining himself to harness the Macula) into more concrete storytelling would've secured it I think. For example, narratively the significance of Hugo using the macula is he is literally and figuratively allowing the 'evil' to overcome his innocent self. In the game however, the consequence of abusing that power is simply having to wait to use it again - an inconvenience completely unrelated to Hugo's loss of self. Instead, I'd love to see Hugo become unresponsive to his beloved points of interest - the defining moments of joy we are accustomed to sharing with him, when discovering a feather, for example, would be made unavailable to players who overuse his powers, because narratively they are destroying the boy who has those emotional responses. The more players let the Macula take over Hugo, the less 'Hugo moments' they get to enjoy. Walking past a feather, only for Hugo to be too defeated/distant to engage with it, would surely be more meaningful than the cooldown.

Thanks for the thoughtful response! I really like your interpretation of possible game mechanics. I do feel the gamification can sometimes be too "gamey" and more realistic implementations like you suggest can be more effective.

    • @Deimonos85
      @Deimonos85 9 місяців тому

Exactly. The guy in the video speaks like the player's decisions had any effect on the game. It doesnt ... as Amicia, you can sneak past every guard but when you are forced to kill them like in the barn with Lucas while searching for Nightshade.. it will result in the same thing, Amicia getting more violent and frustrated or as Hugo, you can decide not to use his sonar powers but then he will lose control through unavoidable plot points, like when Hugo loses it after their mother is killed..
as for the puzzles, they were pretty obvious too.. for example, when you have to open the huge doors to find Basilius.. everything is blocked and there is only room that you can open and there is a cart in it....
check any of the Tomb Raider games and you will see what puzzles look like. I think Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the best one of the trilogy.
Anyway, I think the story is 100% the most important aspect of the game, because gameplay is just linear and you get not sidequests.. you arrive on La Cuna, and you are in the first village and you cannot search freely, you turn a corner and there are some people standing in your way.. or a random dude on a horse blocking the path, making you go through an already defined path to trigger an event. The best part for me is when you have to avoid the guards in order to move on to the next area.. that is it.. exploring is non existent and sidequests the same.. no actual equipment improvement or actually learning.. because that automatic system didnt seem to make much difference in the gameplay..
I went with gear level 3 so i didnt need to use tools anymore and the crossbow 3 so i could reusde them.. that is most lethal Amicia can be since then she can kill the smaller dudes with helmets too, not only the archers and javelin throwers that never use helmets.. it is funny huh.. no javelin thrower on that island has the money to buy a helmet

Wow, just finished the game for the first time having gone in blind. That was an experience. I’m not sure any media has touched me so much aside from documentaries about things that have actually happened (holocaust stuff, etc.). I lost someone close to me unexpectedly a while back, and the game does an absolutely incredible job of mimicking those stages of grief like denial, bargaining, and acceptance.
I can see why those who are a little younger or haven’t had a major loss in their lives yet might have a harder time relating. If I was 10 years younger I might come away from the game just thinking “wow, that was fucking depressing.” I would even go so far as to say not everyone should play this game because the emotions it evokes can be so real.
But for those of us who have experienced how unfair real life can be, this game was a stunningly beautiful representation of that. This game reminds you of the inevitability of loss and the futility we all eventually feel in the face of it, but also what it means to truly love and be human.

I believe this video game will go down in history as a masterpiece in interactive storytelling.
    SPOILERS!:
Players will Likley complain why didn't anyone just kill Hugo and have this ordeal over with? What was the point of the game?
At face value, that's understandable but the game design prioritises character development and themes through the use of interaction.
Many would say Hugo's only crime in such a cruel world was existing. Hugo has every reason to be upset and angry yet he is willing to sacrifice himself to preserve what Beauty their is. Why?
That's what makes the slow moments so powerful. They don't just exist for pacing, they also exist for Amicia and Hugo to bond. These moments are made more powerful in the context of the game because most of these events arnt just shown in cutscenes but also in gameplay.
Players bond with the De Rune siblings as they have fun at a carnival, say hello to Pilgrims, collect flowers and feathers as well as Watch over each other.
The interactivity also emphasises the growing pressure in Amicia and her emotional insecurity. This all culminates in a tragedy that arguably wasn't about a reward but of themes of Love, Grief, Trauma and Moving forward from suffering.
Whilst the video game is depressing, it still states their is Beauty and Virtue worth living for in this life and the next.
That's why the final chapter is so tear jerking.
    That's why Hugo sacrificed himself.
That's why the story foreshadowed said sacrifice and Amicia's unwillingness to accept it for so long.
After all, with narrative based games like these, the stories seemingly arnt always about players personal input but also on character decisions. (Their could be a balance with the skill tree).
So whilst the game offers a bleak scenario, it also affirms that Love is worth holding onto to endure the worst that life has to offer. Whilst we will wrestle with external and internal struggles, Sacrifice of self is what ultimately leads to a healthier future.
Hugo externally struggled but eventually showcased self sacrifice by surrendering his own life.
Amicia struggled internally but eventually showcased self sacrifice by willing let her struggle go.
No greater love than he who would sacrifice himself for his friends.

I have played and finished a lot of great story-driven games over the years, with many endings leaving a lasting mark on me and how I look at gaming. No other game in my history has made me feel quite like Requiem did. I sat in my chair in deafening silence after the final "whip" of the sling and the screen went dark. The voice acting done by Charlotte McBurney (Amicia), especially in the closing moments, was the best voice acting I've ever seen in a video game. This is a haunting and unforgettable masterpiece.

For about most of the second half of the game, I had a weird feeling that Hugo would have to die. I mean, the game practically tells you multiple times that he had to die to stop the plague. The only thing that kept me thinking that Hugo would be cured was the magic pond water. I figured it wouldn't be that which cures him, but I figured that since times were starting to get really tough, we were close to getting him cured. But after the ending hit, that's when I figured I was fitting perfectly in Amicia's shoes due to me convincing myself he would live.

I think Asobo did this game a disservice with chapter 16.
They should have played to their strengths of going against what people have come to expect from these types of games. They gave us simple but satisfying combat where today's games are dishing out such intricate combat systems that players forget and don't even use a 3rd of it.
Looking back on the premise and the journey they had to go through you would naturally expect it to end up like it did but the real shocker would have been them giving us a semblance of a happy ending for the 2.

Gonna make a comparison with one of the few other games that broke me, though in a different way: Red dead redemption 2 had an incredibly sad ending BUT Arthur had done what he wanted to accomplish, he got his redemption. The game even ended with a hopeful note, we get to see john establish a happy-ish life with his family (even though we all know what it would lead to, but that’s not the point here), it ended with the impact arthur’s actions had on john’s family. A plague tale requiem on the other hand leaves you hoping all throughout and then takes everything away from you, it is purely depressing and nothing else. I’m not criticizing, this is what real life is like sometimes, sadly. You can hope and fight for someone you care abt who suffers from a terminal disease for exemple, and the disease will still win. It’s also unfair because hugo is completely powerless, he’s just a kid. I’m just both amazed and terrified at how well they conveyed that.

Glad other people like the ending, I personally hated it. Made the whole franchise feel pointless. I suppose Amicia could have just hit Hugo over the head with a rock at the beginning of the first game and a whole lot of people would not have lost their lives. It makes the sacrifice of Arnor, Beatrice, Arthur and Roderick seem meaningless. I love this game, but that ending was dreadful to me. Also, the part where Amicia gets hit in the stomach with an arrow would almost certainly have killed her.

I've just finished Requiem and I have conflicting feelings about the ending and the 2nd game itself.
On one side, what I ride this was, from voice acting to character development, Requiem was also a very beautiful and atmospheric game, you can really immerse yourself in this plaged world.
On the other hand, I'm usually a fan of games that show a darker perspective on life, and that living happily ever after is not always real life, but this ending didn't feel very right to me still...
The game's plot continuously leads us on for a light at the end of the tunnel but each time it's just a dead end.
When Hugo's dream about the island turned out to be real I thought a turning point was coming, clearly the dream was meant to be somehat prophetic on a solution to the Macula, but in the end just they just learned about the grim ending of their ancestors and that got their mother killed.
This is when I realised perhaps the game would not have a happy ending, but it kept going towards something, but that something was just death all around, they were doomed from the start, and that makes me feel my progress in these 2 games was kind of pointless.
Even for a game that privileges stealth I believe it was very slow paced and repetitive, the first one was a discovery on how you could use alchemy to your advantage throughout the game, but the second one starts by stripping you down on the tools you already had until Chapter 4 or 5 can't remember. And even when you get new tools like the Tar it's not really used so much until the end, and the crossbow is not really helpful until the last 20% of the game.
These are nitpicks on my part but when I put them together with the final outcome it left a bitter taste in the sense that I was hoping for a better payoff.
I don't believe the game has a great replayability value, at least to me the story is what kept me going, don't see the point of going through it again, but it's definitely a game I will remember and left a mark in me.

I consider this on par with Metal Gear Solid 3, where you have to take the final shot in the end. But that was after a boss fight, where I was just happy I won. The context here is so different, and a lot of that has to do with it being a child. A Plague Tale is an escort game, the puts a twist on the emotional gut punch. Instead of the protector dying (TellTale's The Walking Dead, The Last of Us), it's the person you were protecting.

Or something like, oh, we don't know how this will turn out so we won't even try to treat this cancer. And this game reminded me exactly of the latter, of the families who try every possible solution to find a cure. Sometimes it works other times, sadly, it doesn't.
And it's not for nothing. In the end Amicia decides to go and travel and find where the next carrier could be so that maybe her experience could change the outcome.
