    A comparative analysis of the stories, themes, and characters of the A Plague Tale and The Last of Us games. In particular A Plague Tale: Requiem and The Last of Us Part II. Spoilers, obviously.
    A Plague Tale: Innocence is an action-adventure stealth game developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Home Interactive. Set in 14th century Aquitaine, France during the Hundred Years' War, the game focuses on the plight of Amicia de Rune and her ill brother Hugo as they flee from soldiers of the French Inquisition and from hordes of rats that are spreading the black plague. The player controls Amicia, using a combination of stealth and limited tools to hide from, distract, or knock out soldiers, evade rat hordes, and solve puzzles, incorporating elements of survival horror games.
    A Plague Tale: Requiem is an upcoming action-adventure stealth video game developed by Asobo Studio and published by Focus Entertainment. It is the sequel to A Plague Tale: Innocence (2019), and follows siblings Amicia and Hugo de Rune who must look for a cure to Hugo's blood disease in Southern France while fleeing from soldiers of the Inquisition and hordes of rats that are spreading the black plague.
    The Last of Us is a 2013 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Computer Entertainment. Players control Joel, a smuggler tasked with escorting a teenage girl, Ellie, across a post-apocalyptic United States.
    The Last of Us Part II is a 2020 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. Set five years after The Last of Us (2013), the game focuses on two playable characters in a post-apocalyptic United States whose lives intertwine: Ellie, who sets out for revenge after suffering a tragedy, and Abby, a soldier who becomes involved in a conflict between her militia and a religious cult.
    The Last of Us Part I is a 2022 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment. A remake of the 2013 game The Last of Us, it features revised gameplay and controls, including enhanced combat and exploration, and expanded accessibility options. The single-player story follows Joel, who is tasked with escorting the young Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States and defend against cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus. The game also includes the expansion The Last of Us: Left Behind, a single-player campaign following Ellie and her best friend Riley. The original game's online multiplayer mode is omitted.

    TLOU was sad and emotional, but Requiem tore my soul out, never had a game make me feel so strongly. Requiem is now a top 3 of all time for me!

    Great video. I personally did not like TLOU2 because it has a lot of problems that prevent me from enjoying the game. In short basis, it's the use of favoritism. I loved A Plague Tale Requiem more because it focused on quality and every character in that game served a purpose. I'm not saying TLOU2 is a bad game but I would be lying if I say there is nothing wrong with the narrative choices. That's just how it is.

      Thanks! FWIW, my take on TLOU2 in its own right is something I discuss at length here: ua-cam.com/video/66rAcqwagOk/v-deo.html (the story analysis is the second half of the video) Always interested to hear other takes.

    I just finished Requiem last night. This was superb work you did here for both franchises.
    For me, TLOU2 left me with a bad first and last impression (killing Joel at the beginning, and having to play as his killer for the second half of the game)...I haven't touched it since I beat it for first time and don't plan to again.
    For A Plague Tale, they took the story and the way it was told in a different direction and it was all the more human and satisfying in the end. I thoroughly enjoyed both games all the way through. This, I would gladly return to for another playthrough.

      I get what you mean. I regularly replay TLOU2 for the challenges, like Permadeath, but the story is heavy enough that I need significant time to pass before I revisit it.

    They cannot be compared, they're not even in the same league. Requiem is brilliant storytelling, one of the best stories in a game of all time. LOU2 is one of the worst stories of all time, in any form of media, and can barely even be considered storytelling.

    Plague tale feels like it was inspired by ND in general i didnt realise it until i replayed uncharted 3 with the spider and light section. Plague tale requiem is a great game and im glad its getting recognition in game awards even if i dont think it will win anything as it will be overshadowed by the other big games

    Requiem and Innocense definetly did handle the guilt and regret of killing in Amicia very well. She is just a child and is absolutely against taking someone's life which takes a toll on her mental health later on. The heartbreaking message of entire story hits harder then in TLOU 2. The only lesson we got is in the end when Ellie spares Abby's life

    The main difference: Ellie acts out of revenge by choice. Amicia acts out of loyalty by demand, as her mother instructed her in "Innocence" to protect Hugo while being on the run.

    Great video,
    While I hated the last of us 2, one of my most disappointing games of my lifetime it really brings out why plague tale worked for me so much more. I loved both of those games. I guess I always connected with being a protector more being a father. I never saw the cure from the first game as being a likely thing. Evidence from files made it seem like a slim chance at best and the fireflies knocking Joel and Eliie out removed ellie agency and any chance of Joel coming to grips with it. I would have done the same thing with the circumstances and it seemed like the only moral decision. Though their intentions were good, I viewed the fireflies as no better than the the group trying to Eliminate Hugo to stop the macula.
    From that perspective I saw abby as child of a priest that was trying to lock Hugo away that took revenge on amicia for killing their parent. I just never could relate to her or her actions because fundamentally I never saw Joel actions in the hospital as wrong under the circumstances.
    That is the reason part 2 fell apart for me, I glad some liked the game but abby to me was a borderline villain that I was unfortunately made to play.

    • @AKblackandredYT
      @AKblackandredYT  Рік тому +1

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. And yeah, even as someone who liked Part 2 and playing Abby (and hopes we get to in Part 3) I do think they need to lean on the Fireflies being villains if they return. They're great villains cause they're villains with a cause and a moral purpose, and that's more interesting than being evil for its own sake, but they should definitely be antagonists if they're in Part 3.

    I played both of them and find that Amicia's rage and guilt are almost the same as as Ellie's. They both suffered loss (Amicia's mother and Joel, in Ellie's case), they both fight fanatically, but in the end, i don't know who suffers worse (spoiler) is it Ellie who seems to never quite give up, even after Abby is defeated, or Amicia who despite the fact that she lost Hugo (and is in dire denial, see the last dialogues before you get to kill Hugo). I enjoyed playing these characters as they suffer, in order to thrive and life on. It gives me hope, since i am in the same situation mentally.

    • @TheBrandonn
      @TheBrandonn 7 місяців тому +1

      Ellie definitely suffers worse. She lost her fingers, and Dina/Joel, and ultimately got nothing out of the whole ordeal. Amicia found peace, and her purpose was to save the world. Ellies journey, like I said, was for nothing.

    I loved both A Plague Tale games and The Last Of Us games but The Last of Us Part 1 had the better story and it was about love and finding humanity within yourself again to protect the people you care about. The Last Of Us Part 2 was great for its gameplay elements and Ellie's section in the Last Of Us Part 2 is one of the strongest sections in the game too. The story goes downhill once you start playing as the other character in Part 2. I think A Plague Tale Innocence and A Plague Tale Requiem's stories are amazing and they both have the concept of needing to protect a sibling from harm too and the way Amicia and Hugo love each other so deeply and how strong their bond is with each other still touches my heart even today too because it's a really touching story. I'll remember both A Plague Tale Innocence and A Plague Tale Requiem's stories forever!🥰💖❤💙

    A Plague Tale 2 es mejor que The Last of Us 2 y explico por qué. La diferencia entre ambos es que mientras A Plague Tale 2 continúa con la misma narrativa, pero dándole una mejor profundidad para conocer el lore, la otra se centra en otra historia que no tiene nada que ver con la anterior entrega. Sentí que el primer A Plague Tale parecía una copia de The Last of Us, pero debo decir que Requiem es la mejor secuela y supera por encima a The Last of Us 2.

  • @ShiniRyuga

    See that, Naughty Dog? This is how you create a story, Kill off a beloved character in a way that doesn't piss off your fanbase Meanwhile sounding so pretentious about your "Deeper meaning" and trying to force people to understand a character we don't give 2 shits about. Because we didnt spend an entire game with Abby. I saw her kill 2 fan favorite characters and kick another one and then suddenly jump to "awww look its tiny Abby and her Dad, They're saving a Zebra, awww oh no it's the doctor, Poor Abby dont you feel bad now?" such stupidity and some fans actually fall for it. Most of the people who like Abby admitted to liking Abby after more than one play through. That's not liking a character, That's staying in a room full of shit so long that it stops smelling like shit. Plague Tale just did the story beautifully and didn't just give Amecia constant bad luck. Ellie couldn't go on a walk without being stabbed by a tree... LITERALLY. She loses everything with no pay off for the player. Ooh but that's the point, The game doesn't do what the player wants, it does what it wants. Which is stupid too. Who buys a game to feel nothing but depression with no pay off? Plague Tale gives a revenge story with Arnaud that is mutually destructive and gives immediate pay off. It also doesn't try to force us to like Victor. Or show us his background so we can feel bad for him. No, Because that does nothing for us. He's still the asshole trying to kill me and kidnap my brother. So fuck his feelings.
    I think A Plague Tale succeeded in everything The Last of Us Part 2 failed in.

      It sucks that TLOU2 didn't land for you and you didn't enjoy it. Sincerely. I hate going into something I expect to enjoy and not enjoying it.
      But the video isn't about "this story bad, this story good" because, aside from me enjoying both, I don't think that's an interesting conversation really. I also think raging at stories you don't enjoy makes it harder to have proper critical conversations about them. If everything's a either masterpiece or trash, and because of how the internet is the opposing opinions have to yell at each other and die on their respective hills, then what is there to talk about? It just kills the conversation.

      I one hundred percent agree with you. The Last of Us I and A Plague Tale: Innocence were good games that resonated with the audience because both Joel and Amicia find purpose in parenting Ellie and Hugo, while in The Last of Us II Ellie does exactly the opposite. She wastes the years she had left with Joel in pointless resentments and later on wastes her growing relationship with Dinah for a revenge trip she didn't even complete.
      Amicia, in Requiem, sacrifices Hugo to save the world but ends up alone and traumatized because she gave up her brother, the person that valued her the most, to save an already broken world filled with people that will never appreciate her sacrifice and will always go out of their way to belittle her. In any case, I always felt Amicia could have reached her brother if she had tried harder, because we saw her bring him back from a very dark place in the first game and now, in the second game, they knew and loved each other even more; I sincerely believe it was possible.
