I miss when printers were just connected to a computer.. and worked. No subscriptions, no internet connection, no internal counter that kills your printer after so much use so you buy a new one, (mine has one that requires a lil hack to bypass)
@@theaterlightman89 I bought a black/white Brother. Looked up the price for the printer + 10.000 prints or so. It has LAN (and AirPrint) which is very important because all devices I print from are wireless, like most people have these days.
I had an hp that's like 10 years old update over WiFi without my knowledge then pester me about ink through an echo speaker. I threw both down a flight of stairs
The point of the fighters was that if the person tried to use the threat of a bomb to hijack the plane, then the fighters could destoy the plane before it could reach somewhere it could do damage going down. Making the attempt futile and thus hopefully deterring the scenario.
If they actually thought he was a credible threat, they wouldn't have let the plane take off with him on it, or ordered it back down. Both of these are fully within their power. The fact they didn't means they didn't take him as a credible threat and so cannot have believed the jets were a truly proportionate response, therefore he cannot be held responsible for their cost.
He sent the message before it took off but British authorities only passed on the threat when the airplane was already inside Spanish airspace, probably the eavesdropping system takes some time to process the threats (as in the time needed for the aircraft to be in the air,, so nothing you say makes sense. In hindsight (now that we know he carried no explosives) it is easy to say that the fighters weren't needed, but in real time it was the right reaction to the threat. @@iskierka8399
@@iskierka8399 what source did you read? I read that they (British Intel) only found out about it after the plane had taken off and then let Spain (who owned the jets) know over France.
1:28:35 The reason you send in the fighter jets is to make sure the plane does not fly over the city, and keep the impact of an plane crashing minimal.
Regarding Apple's new idea on "how do we technically comply with the EU regulations?", I wonder something. I know that law is very different in some countries, some having what I'll call "roman law" and other "anglosaxon law". In Belgian laws for example, there's something called "the spirit of the law", it's a concept meant to prevent what Apple's trying to do here. The idea is that whatever "technically" you do, if the "spirit of the law" is to allow something easier, you making it harder isnt compliant, because you don't comply with the "spirit of the law" and "what the regulator meant". Maybe that principle also exists in EU law? I dont know (and I'm not a lawyer)
Absolutely, right. European legislation has to be followed "in the spirit of the law". If it's not enforceable, the European Parliament will amend the text to make sure they aren't being misunderstood. I expect apple to get some FAFO slap in the next months
Yes, but the spirit of the law is also enforced by prior cases/rulings. So this needs another lawsuit or more laws. Which either way will take a long time and that is Apple's strategy.
The behaviour of Apple with those frankly insane pricing models could be classified as anti consumer and anti competition in the EU. And I wouldn’t be surprised if Apple would be scrutinised by the EU for this behaviour. Hopefully with a fine that actually hurts them and of course the remedy of the situation.
@skechergnSadly I'm worried that would happen... Apple had enough revenue to pull out and stop all services in the Eu just to prove a point. They still make hand over fist everywhere else in the world. But could the EU lawmakers survive a week w/o any apple services (support, app store, applepay, etc ) My guess is Apple can outlast the EU, as there will be a lot of angry people who Apple will direct to the EU lawmakers wiping their hands of this matter.
@skechergnonly problem with that is that you’re now encroaching on the users rights to use their device, which is the opposite of this type of legislation.
I was one of those people who fell for the trap of MXM in my first gaming laptop (gt80 titan laptop equivalent) that had a gtx 980m sli setup. After that generation of mxm gpus it was decided that the TDP limit of MXM was increased from 100 watts to 200 or something like that, so now my chances of upgrading had pretty much died I didn't even bother looking to see if the layout of the new boards would work with my particular laptops cooling system. MXM was only useful if you were really lucky that a GPU upgrade would work with the particular laptop you had with TDP and cooling layout/capabilities or if the current gpu would die and you were able to somehow buy a replacement which was its own problem since you couldn't easily buy standalone mxm cards like you could for desktop cards.
Can we take a second and appreciate Luke's discipline and hard work? His weight loss progress is really showing. Congrats my dude! Edit: well dang, someone asked a merch message about his workout later in the show. Wanted to point out his progress for a few shows now.
I have always hated hewlett crapard. Recently I got a multi-function printer for free, and hated it so much. Ink ran out after 20-30 prints. The machine had to be connected to the internet and in connection with HP when scanning documents, even when the printer was directly attached to the PC. Clearly HP was spying on my scans. Scanning private business documents meant that secrecy was important, and not knowing what HP does with the data, I chucked the thing. Never again will I use HP printers.
I don't think I will voluntarily purchase an HP product again. Never purchased a printer but I have purchased 2 things, the first was "serviceable" but honestly overpriced and clearly engineered for the benefit of HP, not the end users, the second was simply faulty. HP branding looks more like a red flag to me than anything confidence inspiring.
54:20 even Linus got confused I think to make it graphs even better in future videos you could highlight (or something else) the device being reviewed. I also really want to see error bars/confidence interval but that’s probably a long shot.
Always download to watch Sat during my work day. Waiting on a Driver, Stubby, Precision matching set to pick them all up, but very excited to add the exquisite quality to my electrical kit.
1:29:00 They'll have scrambled the jets in case they had to take the plane down outside of any heavily populated areas. As an old Vulcan once said "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few". It's better to lose a few hundred people and one plane, as opposed to several thousand and critical buildings/infrastructure.
Came here to say exactly this and I'm glad the jets didn't feel the need to take action. This is why you don't joke about stuff like this at airports. All it takes is one unrelated drunken dickhead on the plane to cause a commotion and then the Spanish airforce has a decision to make.
Should never joke about that stuff in or near airports. You can basically guarantee all public transport that goes anywhere near any major airport is bugged and monitored 24/7. No one is risking a joke as a joke anymore 🤷♂️ Imagine the fall out when the intelligence agencies apologise and say "Soz guys, we thought he was havin' a laugh!"
To be fair to Linus, Hitler did advocate against animal cruelty and smoking. Which as linus said is something we can agree with and still hate the man for the absolute **** he was
The reason a Camera filming a screens can show some difference in SDR and HDR is the Camera was designed to capture the world of Colors visible in real life (more than even HDR) and cram it into a SDR color space and since SDR is already less color than real life it will look even worse it is like filming 2 TV'S one that is Playing a 4k Video and the other is playing a 320x240 even if you record them with a 1080p camera one will still look sharper than the other
If I could afford a framework 16 I would have it in a hearbeat. Unfortunately being a single dad on minimum wage here in the uk puts pay to that but really do hope the gpu upgrade path lasts longer than mxm, and that framework go from strength to strength with the products.
Ya'll also forgot to mention the Valve controller overlay system that allows users to configure & use controllers in games that otherwise may not offer native controller support. So, in terms of that 30% fee: Valve does a LOT to justify that 30% cut. It's worked to become the largest platform in the PC gaming space; it doesn't charge users for cloud saves; it includes remote play & game streaming features. Valve doesn't just operate a distribution platform, it operates & creates *VALUE* for its platform. In terms of all the companies collecting fees off every sale on its platform? Valve is easily the one that does the most to offer value to both consumers AND developers.
I've been messing about with game dev as a hobby for several years. I started learning Unity properly with a view to making a bit of extra money, right before they dropped their runtime fee. I quickly jumped back to Godot. Just the other day I bought a course to help properly develop games in Godot for iPhone... right before Apple dropped their runtime fee. Am I cursed?
I can tell you living in Atlanta, GA that the reason companies are building in rural America is absolutely not just because they can, and its more because they’re getting tax cuts AND they can pay engineers 30-50% less than NY and CA wages. The current layoff situation doesn’t help since people are taking less money just to remain employed.
So, I've watched the WAN show at 2x speed for over a year now. I have become quite accustomed to that speed and have frequently wondered if - were I freed from UA-cams petty limitations - I would be able to process your videos at an even higher speed. Thanks to you watching your own video at 2x speed, I can now say that yes, I could totally watch your videos at at least 3x.
If you're using chrome or a chromium browser, the UA-cam playback speed extension can make it go even faster, up to speeds that are likely faster than youtube can transmit the video to you.
E2EE and encryption in transit are two completely different things! Even without E2EE, I know for a fact that Snapchat uses TLS with certificate pinning for text chat, making eavesdropping by airport wifi operators (or whatever) essentially impossible. The obvious takeaway from this is that the British government has a tap inside Snapchat, or Snapchat monitors user chats themselves and proactively reports "jokes" and such to the authorities.
It would be great to see more videos with the lmg et al staff ‘unsupervised’ by Linus. It’s nice to have that variety of hosting and styles. Linus’s high energy and enthusiasm is often exactly what a video needs but sometimes it’s nice to see a different type of goofing around, jokes, insights, etc. 1:06:38
Thank you for thinking of the transparent nature of fabric when making stuff. There is an epidemic of transparent clothes (especially in candid photography).
It's weird hearing them talk so well about terry fox day because I remember that as one of the few days i'd be bullied by the teachers because we'd essentially run/walk a small marathon on terry fox day but due to medical reasons i really couldn't do it. So teachers and some students would treat me like shit because "terry fox did it". eventually i just stopped going to school on those days.
I guess they had better teachers. I had a few great and a few not so great teachers growing up. The good ones know when to encourage and when to back off, the bad ones just put you down or take the bullies side. I had a band director that was a major bully and a couple years after I graduated went to prison for sexting a teenager (many people had reported him for inappropriate behavior but we were told that unless the girls he was looking at complained it didn't matter).
Never thought I'd be happy to see that there's a new wan show!

The Apple and Steam comparison is kind of funny. I know the topic is about iOS but what amazes me is that there are more monthly active Steam users than Mac users worldwide. I never thought about how massive Valve is.

regarding the printer segment and mention of Framework printers, it's a good example of how patents can, and are very often used to stifle competition and innovation, since many won't even innovate, since they're discouraged to even try entering a market, because people are so aggressive with lawsuits and patents
2:45:50 Botanically bananas are berries, which are a subset of fruits, and the banana plant is an herbacious plant. Botanical and culinary definitions, howwever, are completely different and there isn't even the same categories. For example botanically "vegetable" on its own means absolutely nothing and the closest botanical terms would encompass all plants. That would make a tomato a vegetable, a fruit, and a berry.
Regarding the bankruptcy question, I cannot speak to UK or Spanish law, but in the US there are different classes of debt, and some debt cannot be discharged by bankruptcy. In general, debts from court fines, fees, and punishments cannot be discharged. I think a lot of educational debt might not be dischargeable, either. And creditors can go into court and make the argument that based on how certain debts were accrued (like with fraud or some intent on deception in order not to pay the debt) that the debts shouldn't be discharged. On top of that, because the idiot was 18, creditors might not go after just the kid. Presumably, he doesn't have a lot that could be considered assets that could be used to help pay off some of the debts. (Yes, one of the conditions of bankruptcy is that sellable assets are liquidated to help pay off those debts before they're discharged.) They may state that he's still a ward of his parents or guardians, especially if he's still living with them. Thus, creditors could go after mom and dad along with the kid. And the court could add conditions about mom and dad to any bankruptcy proceedings for the kid. Now, I'm not a lawyer, so this is not 100% accurate. These are just what's possible.
Don't worry, the judge already cleared him of all charges. The reason stated was that the conversation was held in a private environment, while also obviously being a joke, given the previous context of that chat. Furthermore he did not have any reason to believe that the chat was being monitored, thus all actions taken by the secret service and Spanish government were their own problem. Fair judgement
Yes, Eurocent is actually a thing. No, we never call it that, it's still Cent. You won't hear anyone say Eurocent in a store EVER. It's just the official name for it so it doesn't get confused with the Dollars or smth idk idc it's still Cent. So yeeea, not 50 Eurocents, it's just 50 Cents.
Re: the airline passenger. I know its funny on the surface the irony of the whole "We'll shoot you down if you use that bomb!" , it is actually serious. The THREAT of a bomb can be used as leverage to take control of a plane (near impossible now due to regulation changes after 9/11, but still). Also, a plane can hold a pretty big bomb (again, would be really hard to get a 500 lb bomb onto a plane, but technically possible). Either scenario, you can turn the plane itself into a weapon. See attacks on 9/11. Its better to take down a plane where overall damage is less then you let the plane continue on. And the time it takes to vet threats, trace connections, and see if there is any plot, or a larger plot, takes time. Its better to get them to intercept and escort ASAP, then wait to launch when a serious threat becomes known.
Apple is about to find out that in Europe, the clear intent of a law matters a lot, not just the pure text of a law, which is more the case in the US. So just complying ‚technically‘ can still violate the intent of the law and land you a fine.
The spirit of the law is supposed to be the law in the US but we seem to have lost that at some point along with a lot of our constitutional rights (read the first 10 amendments and compare to practiced law).
Eurocents? XD Never heard that one before and we use Euro here. It's just "cents" for us. I guess it's sometimes Eurocents to distinguish currency easily?
@@jonatanrullman Emphasis was on the "sometimes" so it's obvious it's for distinguishing currency, but I was just stating kinda like "yeah I get that maybe sometimes that can be reasonable". I wasn't as clear as I could've been.
Thank you for mentioning Terry Fox. I watched the movie as a young kid/teenager. Somehow the movie about the guy that ran with a prosthetic always stuck in my mind. I just could not remember what it was about. Now I know. Thank you for that. I will try to find that movie to watch it again.
In response to the HP topic, my next printer is going to be a Brother laser printer because inkjet printers SUCK. Not only because of the subscription model, but modern ones only last for a few years. Give me my DeskJet 880c on my LPT port back please!
I made the mistake of upgrading without doing more research, thinking I could trust the next in the series to be atleast equal. I wasnt able to get my phone back even a day later, it was already shipped off for recycling.
Regarding the bomb in a plane: Yes of course shooting the plane down would also result in it's destruction and death of passengers. BUT the location where this happens can be influenced. Explosion over farmland or a major city makes a huge difference in human and other kind of losses.
Steam also allows you to sell keys of your game for free. It'll handle updates and downloading and cloudsaves still. The 30% cut is only for games sold IN the store
Eurocent is the correct name, and if you handle multiple Currencies or like here need to make clear, what Currency you are talking about, you should call them Eurocent. "Nobody calls them eurocents" - yes, when you sit inside the Eurozone and not handling/using other currencies, but they sit in Canada and have a worldwide audience.
I watch everything on 2x speed. (Including the wan show) The react portion was fun, I actually had to pay attention for once. I wish youtube had a 4x speed button.
I completely agree. I downloaded a safari browser extension to increase the speed even further, but the UA-cam App is definitely more comfortable on mobile, than the website. That’s why I don’t use it as much, but UA-cam should really add this feature.
Revanced has higher speeds, but at a certain point audio gets distorted quite a bit. At 3X the distortion is noticeable, at 4X I need to focus to actually understand and 5X is more distortion and popping than actual content. It may be my hardware chugging, so I guess that's why these aren't an option normally - to provide comparable experience across the board.
"You can just buy an Android" except a lot of people can't. Apple has put a lot of effort into platform integration specifically ao that leaving their ecosystem is difficult or impossible. If you use an Apple Watch, you *have* to use an iPhone. Some AirPods features don't work on non-Apple devices. When I bought a Mac Mini for video editing, it assumed I had an iPhone and asked me to log in with that to set it up. I'm sure there are more examples that I'm just not familiar with. As cool as all the "it just works" can be when you *do* buy everything from Apple, they also intentionally refuse to support third-parties in any way specifically so people can't ever leave.
1:35:00 $45/month for multivitamin supplements?!? Is there gold in there? My store brand multivitamins are a few bucks for 60, so maybe $2/month, and they have a couple more vitamins and minerals than AG1 (though neither have iron).
Just overpriced subscription services ,like Hello Fresh and others . They do have their own purpose for the people which are too busy or too lazy to go to a farmacy or grocery shopping and cooking... But imho just a waste of money
A lot of store brand, and even premium brand, supplements are full of garbage or otherwise use low quality ingredients. Just because something says it has certain vitamins doesn't mean they are the exact same molecules you'd get from healthy foods, processing methods can really mess things up. Supplements also don't have the same regulation as food does (at least not in the US) so you can't just read the label and trust it. That said I don't know how good AG1 actually is but I know of some really expensive supplements that go through a lot more testing and are generally more trusted by nutritionists (who don't get a cut).
2:38:51 Along with that, YTP viewers can Download videos, which YT treats as 100% watch time. Spiffing Brit talked about this a while back. He did a download delete hack, but YT often fixes what he breaks, so not sure if the meta still works. Talking about the proportion, if Linus does 4hr Wan + 2 random 4 hr streams in February, then a YTP viewer who downloads 1/28th of your watch time for that month.
Good. Instead of being like the idiots who are trying to turn iOS into android with this side loading and alternate App Store shit. You understand there is other choices out there. Crazy that I pay more to be in a closed off ecosystem and then people go and try to ruin it.
@@officialANON001hey don't say you pay more for it because there are more expensive android phones.that argument is ignorant of options at best and deceptive at worst. I would legitimately buy an iPhone IF it made my criteria side loading is in that but so is lidar and no android devices have lidar as of Jan 2023(last time I purchased a phone and researched). Side loading is one of those as well and doesn't impact people who don't want to use it and is huge for people and companies that do use it. I'm not saying either side is better but photometry is easier to work arround than side loading. If I want software on your iPhone I can get it on there with or without side loading. The only difference is the ease for the user. Btw all the information for a large app can be stored in a cable so when you plug it into your phone it automatically installs. That works with it being plugged into a wall wart too not just a computer because we have computers the size of ports now.

Random comment. On the topic of MXM, some Apple iMac's used MXM modules for their GPU's. While it's not an easy process and a lot of attention needed to be paid to cooling due to different board layouts, it allowed me to upgrade my 2011 iMac from the original AMD 6970m 2gb GPU to an AMD WX7100 Pro 8gb GPU. The main benefit outside of the extra VRAM and the newer silicon is that the new GPU supports Apples Metal graphics engine, allowing it to run current versions of OSX. It may be a Sandy Bridge CPU, but with 32gb of RAM, SSD's, and WIFI and BT upgrades; it's definitely useable for my daughter for her use cases.
The biggest problem with MXM cards as an upgrade path for laptops is that it has never been the case that you could actually buy them. Even if you could rely on the form factor being consistent, so the heat sink would still work, you won't find any for purchase. Except maybe a few years down the line as a used card, which generally limits you to the fastest option for the laptop you got. If you already got the fastest one, and want to upgrade to a new generation, you won't find the cards for sale anywhere.

I miss when printers were just connected to a computer.. and worked. No subscriptions, no internet connection, no internal counter that kills your printer after so much use so you buy a new one, (mine has one that requires a lil hack to bypass)
Consider that when buying your next printer instead of just price. Can’t build a printer for $40 so they’ll get you later on.
Then buy a cheap one. They are all USB only.
Buy an old hp printer with no wifi... black and white, those cartridges last for a looooong time
@@theaterlightman89 I bought a black/white Brother. Looked up the price for the printer + 10.000 prints or so. It has LAN (and AirPrint) which is very important because all devices I print from are wireless, like most people have these days.

The point of the fighters was that if the person tried to use the threat of a bomb to hijack the plane, then the fighters could destoy the plane before it could reach somewhere it could do damage going down. Making the attempt futile and thus hopefully deterring the scenario.
Exactly, scrambling jets in cases like this is standard operating procedure in any NATO country.

Yes it is illegal in some countries, atleast from what I remember during my law lessons from school.

But could the EU lawmakers survive a week w/o any apple services (support, app store, applepay, etc )
My guess is Apple can outlast the EU, as there will be a lot of angry people who Apple will direct to the EU lawmakers wiping their hands of this matter.
@skechergnonly problem with that is that you’re now encroaching on the users rights to use their device, which is the opposite of this type of legislation.
The car stabbing you in the chest line made me lol 😂

Fuck HP (and Epson and Cannon for that matter). They'll get my Brother MFC-495CW when they pry it from my cold dead hands.
Wonder how that would fly with highly secret government or even military documents.

Big picture is super convenient too. As is their support forms. Though I still love GOG for allowing me to download the install files for my games.

I believe the runtime fee only applies to apps on third party app stores
I believe it was 3.5x speed 😂
You can do this in UA-cam revanced
It's intelligible most of the time at 3x
If you're using chrome or a chromium browser, the UA-cam playback speed extension can make it go even faster, up to speeds that are likely faster than youtube can transmit the video to you.
4x is the max after that it just stops audio and it's a silent video.
Some people talk slow enough to actually watch at those speeds.

2:45:50 Botanically bananas are berries, which are a subset of fruits, and the banana plant is an herbacious plant.
Botanical and culinary definitions, howwever, are completely different and there isn't even the same categories.

Loved the section reviewing the video. Pretty dam cool

My store brand multivitamins are a few bucks for 60, so maybe $2/month, and they have a couple more vitamins and minerals than AG1 (though neither have iron).
which is good since iron can interfere with absorption of magnesium and zinc iirc(take iron separately at a different time)
Just overpriced subscription services ,like Hello Fresh and others .
Apple is the worst can’t wait to switch to android
Good. Instead of being like the idiots who are trying to turn iOS into android with this side loading and alternate App Store shit. You understand there is other choices out there. Crazy that I pay more to be in a closed off ecosystem and then people go and try to ruin it.
You’re both idiots 😂 We don’t know what this will turn out like yet.
Sure, cool story bro.
Good have fun!
The basic problem with the free market:
Power consolidation leads to a few or one company owning ALL OF or the overwhelming MAJORITY of a product or process.
Examples:
- Printers
- Computers
- PC OS/Windows/Microsoft
- Cars
- Water heaters
- Wood/lumber
- Etc
Steam is a Marketplace you "choose to use" or use another, while Apple is a market place you are "forced to use"... This is the simple answer to the question if apple has monopoly - it is yes
Apple is 24/7 out there playing Monopoly so to speak
I really hope that, next week, they do a reaction to this week’s video reaction
this weeks show is extra unhinged, I hope they don't lose the partnership with FOURSQUAARAAHH
26:45 im in there
The biggest problem with MXM cards as an upgrade path for laptops is that it has never been the case that you could actually buy them.
Getting a lot of Unity vibes from Apple...
Sweet sweet Canadian boys, yeah we call them eurocents luv from italy
This is not malicious compliance, this is non-compliance. It's just betting on EU lawmakers being stupid and not seeing it.
Chat swings from "Luke control this man!" To "Linus! Shut him up now! Put Nad up front with you!"
Proud to say I'd have one faded blue though 😂 bound to be green before it becomes a more vibrant blue.
Yeah the EU will not let this slide, their is probably a lawsuit coming for Apple
never be on the side of corporations will always be the most correct take.
As a brown person who often wins the TSA lottery I make jokes like this often…. That is a shitty thing for a government to do.
Given your inherent disadvantage when dealing with TSA, is it really wise to up the ante by your speech as well?
@@benketteridge9150 Yes. Yes it is. I like to think I’m just playing a real life souls like.
I watched this in HDR with the new Nvidia feature. It works quite well, in my opinion.
Go Nad!
As an American in Seattle it’s absolutely absurd that so many people actually get a lunch break and even more absurd that they can pay 3 pounds for lunch not 15 in 2021.
Android phones are just iPhones that you can sideload on
3 year old iPhones that you can side load on.
@@oxfordsparky Yeah, iphones are just so innovative like taking technology that other manufacturers did 3 years ago.
Not everyone needs the latest iShit 5 million you incredibly vapid git.
@@oxfordsparky Not everyone needs the latest iPhone to do the thing they've been doing for 3 years. Apple is actively harmful to its customers. Apple treats its customers like morons and you're passing right into their game.
