I love that Linus actually explains business costs and operations and doesn't just say "some day", you learn a lot about the complexity behind it all, I really appreciate that.
That's why WAN Show is the only podcast I listen to. They go into great detail into each topic, debating the good & bad etc. not just saying "yeha, that sucks, nothing we can do about it so just give up" like a majority of them (would) do
German here. The one time I sleep through the live show you do free shipping! I'm a bit bummed, but I appreciate that you did it and apparently ATE IT HARD lol. You made a lot of people really happy, especially people not from the Americas.
Shipping costs are pretty bad for anyone not in mainland US as well. Just for getting something small to the caribbean it could be $50 and/or take you a month.

Well, there is going to be a lot more LTT merch in the EU now, that's for sure. Shame I missed it, the shipping costs has been stopping me from getting the screwdriver and many of my friends.
Saaaaaaame... I really want one. Also not having tax included is so annoying. I put about 100$ of products in my cart (screwdriver and deskpad) and when i go to the final step almost 30$ of tax and 30$ shipping brings it to almost 160$
On the topic of the user replaceable batteries, what if instead of having a removable backplate like old phones, what if it was a cartridge that you could slide out of the bottom or side of the phone, in the same style as a SIM card tray. Just a thought.
Very cool and very sad that me being hacked was part of this episode🤣 I watched the episode on the LTT and still managed to fall for the same thing.. Anyways thanks again for helping fast track the issue with your contacts, it probably saved a lot damage that could have otherwise been caused.
If I didn't know better I'd think 451 was a reference to Fahrenheit 451, in which an authoritarian regime burns books to erase evidence of the past and romanticism about the future that might motivate people to change the world. The only reason I'm not sure if that's the point is because it seems like kind of a reach to get from that to misleading polling services.
I really appreciate Luke openly talking with his struggles in school and over coming his dyslexia. As someone who struggled similarly it’s always nice to hear others stories. 3:25:46
Bro, I’m so sick of this, because i’ve watched so many 3 hour WAN shows in my sleep, every time I finish watching a video it will load a WAN show straight next! 🤯
Halfway through the show we get to see Linus going through depression/grief at all the orders. That’s a lot of money to loose covering shipping fees lmao I genuinely wonder if this sale just ended up loosing them money.
@@saladgreens912 100% because lets say they break even. they still have to restock that inv. i would expect them to lose prob 100k tbh like someone could of order the water bottle(onsale) and it cost them 700$ lol
Indeed; it was the first thought that crossed my mind the moment I saw it, and if it had been set up today to punch every time a merch message came in it would have been hilarious. A 'facepalm' alternative for the fist might be a good idea though!
@@timseguine2 You illustrate the beauty of it: they don't, but people think they do. What they actually say is "9/10 dentists recommend", they never say "over other brands". The truth is, close to 100% of dentists recommend essentially all toothpaste brands because they are all perfectly fine. They don't use 10/10 in the ads because that sounds impossible, and since obviously they polled more than 10 dentists and at least one is bound to say no, they can round down to 9/10 and nobody can say they really lied.

I will say NUCs were everywhere in commercial use. Basically every office I went in and even every single display running at Amazon had a NUC at it. But even then, many were made by HP. Plus many didn't even have the computer mounted on the back of the display, the ones displaying door info were just placed on a steel plate hanging off the wall.
NUC´s in business? I mean those were overpriced since they exist, companies don´t thend to pay more if they can get the same result cheaper. You sure you don´t mean something with a similar formfactor?
@@SteamHeinzeach and every (large) company I ever worked at or with had complete overpriced hardware. In those size categories you'll have only a very small amount of products that can fulfill the extremely broad and at the same time specific specifications.
@user-zk5wm9vz7p remember that they buy in bulk. Plus they didn't tend to have the newest models. Even the new ones tend to be old stock for cheaper prices. Remember that in many cases performance didn't really matter in these cases. As long as it could run a display and connect to the internet it was good enough.
My sister I think still has their first gen and my brother for sure still has a fifth gen as his only computer. In both cases it was a question of really cramped office spaces and not minding spending $50 extra on something really small. Though frankly those first gen where so cheap I wouldn't be surprised if a full size equivalent would have been $100 more than the nuc.
Apple tech support here.. I directly hear from customers every day. You'd be surprised how many tell me they want to chuck their 14 and how their previous phones had less issues.
As far as shipping goes, i actually just wish you would have the option to take orders for a country, say Australia and ship them over here in bulk then have them reshipped in their orders from there. Theres so many things i would like to have, but the shipping is usually 3x the price of the item.
I wonder if they could do a subscribe and save type model: if you order from AUS, LTT will partner with a "local" company and ship in bulk to them for "local" redistribution if the total is over $XX,XXX on day Y of the month. They deal with shipping, taxes, and partnership once per month at most and can set the region minimum in accordance with their needed margins. Might get a lot of "Oh shit! AUS hit the target and cutoff is in 5 days! Tell your friends to get their order in!!"
You need to get some friends and do a group order. I just did that with a mate and the shipping cost was actually quite reasonable. Spent roughly $150 USD and shipping was $30 USD.
Oh man! I love the NUCs! Nice ratio of heat/energy usage vs the compute power you get. When I lived in an apartment I had a whole bunch of NUCs running as servers. They made apartment home labs possible.
I had an American Government teacher in high school that gave us a test on the first day. It was the American Citizenship test, and he told us if any of us got 100% on it we didn't have to come to class the rest of the semester and would get full marks as we already knew everything the class would cover. It was something he did with every class, and up to that point had never had a student get 100%.
weird flex to test people who signed up for a class to teach them that thing in the first place. weirder flex to pull on kids....and not adults who are also desperate to start a new life. ( it IS a class for new immigrants to sign up for readily available everywhere) adults can blaze through a highschool or college course with ease because most adults have learned to learn and focus and work hard...... Adults dont because nearly nobody can afford to put everything on hold for 4 years take near zero pay and still pay for a family.... and by the time youre 30 you realize college has been a waste of time since the 60s because you could have learned all thats needed in a year or 2 at work (as an adult) even most kids dont need it stretched to 4 years
The comment at 2:14:06 that lead "tastes good" is actually true and part of the problem -- lead tastes sweet. The reason for "eating paint chips" being a meme was because small kids will put anything in their mouths, and when they discover it tastes sweet, it becomes something they seek. Similar reason to smelling exhaust fumes from the combustion of leaded gas (though that one I haven't really looked for further support than the person who told me, am older chemist I knew)
Amazon's argument really boils down to "we're different because it's the internet!" Like the good old days of "it's a shopping cart, but it's online, so we filed a patent for it!"

thank you for the free shipping! It was always to expensive for me because the shipping would be 30 and taxes would come on top of it only during payment. Making just buying the screwdriver to expensive(for me). I know that in the US it's normal to calculate taxes later but in the Netherlands, it's normally included in the product's price. So we aren't used to the price being a lot higher during checkout.
I wish it was like that in the US. It was annoying when I had to keep track of how much I was buying in the grocery store and add about 10% tax (tax isn't that high, just kept me under budget). It's worse you go buy a car and they don't include taxes, registration fee, and all the other "because fuck you" fees and it's an extra 1 or 2 thousand dollars.
@@mikavbtjeare there regional taxes? Doing it by IP probably isn’t precise enough, or may risk displaying an inaccurate price if your IP is not where you are. I think you’d have to be signed in to an account with an address already on file.
For me as a German the Intel NUCs made a lot of sense as small home servers because of their energy efficiency (Idle around 5-7W from the wall!). We pay 0.30 - 0.50€ (~0,45-0,75CAD) per kWh after all.
@@Icefumyit's a result of conservatives fucking with energy policy after the 2009 elections and 2011 reactions to Fukushima. There are moments when electric power is free in Bremen (the same wind you get) and 64ct KWh down at Munich (the infrastructure to avoid that was planned by 2006 and construction had started)
@Taistelupelto420 the 2009 plans wouldn't have left us in that mess. Shutting down coal as late as 2038 is embarrassing but Germany is still ahead of other nations in that matter
I laughed out loud at Luke's comment about the kids not wanting to get out of the van. Many years ago we bought a Caravan with a DVD player for the back seat. We bought Weird Al's UHF at Costco one day and put it on for the kids on the way home. They all wanted to stay in the van until it was done xD
Hey Linus & LTT Team. What a week. I want you to know I am all in with you and your team. So take a breath and keep a calm. Now you had been making mistakes but you are human after all. Own your mistakes and most of all take your time to make change in LMG operations. It is not necessory to complete whole revamp process to be completed in 1 week. Take your time. If it requires more time it is not big problem for viewers. If it takes more time than video log it and realease it so we can feel connected to you guys. If you feel hammered from all sides I want you to ask these questions to your self. 1) Why you started LTT ?, 2) what was your motivation to start LTT ?, 3) What are the thing you would never do (off limits) for the good of your viewers ?, 4) What was your goal (vision) to start LTT ? ( I ) think you will get most of your answer for these troubled times. Take criticism to your heart and work on which is relevant. And remember if there is criticism that means you are progressing in your life.
Good show, guys! Hope that shipping promo mishap doesn't get you into too much troubles =/ Your team insistence on keeping your promises really is inspiring, I wish me a small business owner can emulate this too When my team can get our thin margin sorted out in the future, we definitely want to up our customer service game!
Regarding the NUCs. I use to recommend them to companies as Point of Sale Machines, retail spots often don't have a lot of space at the checkout counter. Depending on setup, being able to mount it on the back of the monitor was useful too.
On the NUC front. I recommend that non technical family members that don't game should be using these. I got my mom an Beelink version for Christmas because she was using an old computer. It's supper small, she constantly only puts it to sleep so being efficient is great, and it pulls it's weight for the internet applications that she uses.
19:30 The card systems weren't for upgradability, they were for security compliance. You'd use them to make it easier to lock all the computers up in a vault each night, comply with contractual requirements to use totally separate hardware for different clients' projects, and enable hot-desking office layouts.
we use nucs at the airport i work. they are built into podiums with wheels. light, mobile, gets the job done and adding peripherals with special uses (like keyboards that have that passport swipe thingy) is easier to do than it is with a laptop.
Just smashed my face into my desk, could have watched the show live yesterday because you started so late, instead I decided to safe it for later. Now I learn there was free global shipping😂😂😂😂 You guys are nuts!!! Guess you saved yourself one massive shipment to Europe
After watching for years I finally caught this live bought something and wrote a Merch Message. Just as it was about to come up Linus tabbed over to a different screen and back and my message was gone lol. Edit: Never mind they did it later at 2:41:08 about my Tinkering with Atari 2600 carts!
We use mini PCs in the company all the time. They are simply easier to transport, to store and take up less space on or under the desk. Also with modern CPUs like Ryzen 5000 they are as fast as normal PCs. In particular we use the Lenovo ThinkCentre M75q with AMD Hardware, they are really good and reliable. We used to also have Dell Mini PCs but their Bios was just trash, you could hardly find any settings there and they crashed often or didn't boot into windows. 37:50 It's really dangerous but it's also a work much to use and maintain an Exchange Server. 1:46:42 Sadly there is one, the rule doesn't apply for things that are water proof up to some degree.
Linus sitting there worried nobody would wanna watch VR stuff... ...and here's me sitting with a Valve Index wanting to see more VR tech like vests, force-feedback gloves like the DIY ones they covered, 6DOF motional platforms, omni-directional treadmills, etc. You have the platform to promote VR & advances to the masses dude... go for it !
As an Australian who would love to purchase some of your merch but will never due to the outrageous shipping costs, I wish I had the cash available to make a few purchases during the free shipping offer.
It's all due to their refusal to simply pick a European distribution company based on some weird fears. Since the merch sells quite well, they would easily get into any European distributor with a quite nice split. Shipping for the end customer would fall to almost nothing, sales would increase. Easy decision
@@stefan514 Might sell well but not well enough. Also a European distributor would not help Australians at all. Shipping from the EU costs more than shipping from the US/Canada.

Fun fact regarding old Play Sation controllers: PSX Dual Shock 1 did not had joystick drift. None. At all. How is a 25 year controller able to work let alone not have joystick drift ? Well, this comes from the times where thing were build to last. And as fot they joypad - it is made in a way in which it is always calibrating itself (moving away and back to center). Modern gamepads are made cheaper as they are not calibrated at all. I still have it and it still works. You can even connect it to PC and it will work with modern games. Amazing.
Hey, has anyone mentioned the length of the stream yet? Did you know it was four hours? Well, not quite four hours, but very close. Did you know that this is quite a long time? Did you notice how it's longer than average? It was four hours guys. I'm not sure if anyone but me noticed or mentioned it, but it was actually four hours long. The show that is, the show was four hours long. That's longer than three hours actually. I just wanted to make sure you were aware of the fact that the show was four hours long.
What needs to be enforced is large retailers and market places need to check products meet standards and Amazon, wish and Alibaba need to be held accountable for listing products that don't (lithium ion battery, children's toys, electrical safety)
Many military personnel use small computers as they can fit in a backpack or a deployment bag/ sack. Certain military's had found there personnel using a small computer like the Intel as a way to keep in contact with friends and family while on deployment, instead of taking up the FOB base phones, not to mention the use of gaming as a stress relief system when not on a operation.
@@LightPink This. Steam Deck makes more sense than a NUC. OP is right that space is at a premium, but so much so that the monitor, KB, mouse, etc is a problem.

@@jire8989 that's precisely my point. If I don't intend to spend that money without the discount in the first place, I shouldn't be blowing that much money because of a 20$ discount (it was meant to be a joke anyway 🙂)
I know I'm a bit late here but a really good use case for gaming NUCs is VR: you could easily make a "backpack" with a NUC and a wired VR headset to make a cheap "wireless" VR setup Edit: And obviously a battery, but that's fairly simple with the 12v power input
For Amazon. You just have a misunderstanding of the EU. Try to look at it like (although not exactly) the US states and federal government and, for a lesser extent, Canadian government and the different provinces. The Schwarz Gruppe operates grocery stores consisting of physical establishment with no online presence (it's part of their strategy, they do not deliver and have a very small non food related online sale). They have grocery shops all over the EU but in each country they operate under a local registered company and are subjected to local laws and regulations (that can be different than the EU ones, that are either a recommendation or a minimum obligation that can be surpassed by different countries). Amazon, on the other hand, is an online retailer that works across most of the EU, registered in just one state (Luxembourg) where it pays taxes (or not, according to their tax filing the 44B€ revenues as a loss of 1.2B€ "due to heavy investments") but sell all over the EU so it is logical that they will be regulate by the EU as it does not have a direct presence in each country, it does not pay taxes in each country and therefor cannot be directly regulated by each separate country they operate in. That's why the EU law only applies to companies, like Amazon, that operates online and in different countries in the EU. A company that works is a specific country will be localy regulated.
Planning a trip and expecting everything to go as planned is such a wishful thing it's always interesting to hear how it was envisioned and how it actually turned out
57:55: Sorry Linus, apparently someone did upload video of that, in glorious 4K ua-cam.com/video/-y98D76nwiw/v-deo.html. It was not that bad, you did touch rackets in the end. :)
The Intel NUC is a great little computer for what it is. I have about a dozen of them. I use them heavily for my video production business, primarily in my video production trailer. I can fit six of them on a shelf in a single equipment rack space (though I usually don't run that many at once). They can also be powered on 12V, which makes them really easy to run on battery/solar. I also have them in my guest bedrooms, tucked behind and connected to the TVs in those rooms. It makes it easy to give someone a computer they can work on while staying with me without taking up any space and having to mess with an HDMI cable from their laptops. I also use one as my home theater PC, running Plex. Works great for that.
As an aussie it only made sense this time to buy a backpack. But maybe next time say $50 off shipping or something. That would cover most people at least a good chunk of the shipping without losing $200 on those wierd outliers
@@saladgreens912 to be fair I don't actually know what the comparison is. And Australia is a big arse country. I'm sure it's much more expensive to get something to Alice Springs than metro Melbourne. But it's about the same to get something here as Europe as far as I can figure.
@@milamber319 I just mean in general there are a lot less options for ground shipping. Always hear complaints about nothing coming to austral so costs extra.

I never spend so mutch money in a short amount of time after linus said 'Free shipping'. I was planning to get the backpack next week when I get my money. But since shipping is free rn I busted open my save account to get one right now. (I live in the EU)
I have a Chevy Spark I bought back in 2015. It had a 5 star user satisfaction rating. How did it get that? Guilt. They had two separate survey systems... one for actual in house stuff so they could improve their service, but another whole set to use in their advertising. You were told that if you didn't give your salesman 5 stars across the board he wouldn't be given his commission. Same thing for repairs- if you don't give your mechanic 5 stars he doesn't get paid for the job- but they had a whole different set of books for in house use. They were also insanely pushy with marketing. Within a year they were calling me asking me if I'd like to trade my new car in on another car. I'm a light driver (I'm at about 21k miles on that car here in 2023... I told them when I bought it I hoped to get 20 years out of it). They wouldn't stop calling. I keep weird hours and they kept waking me up. Apparently each department had its own phone number list. It took me a year of me angrily telling them to stop, including having to call them and go through several levels of management and reporting them to the Do Not Call Registry, NYS AG and constantly attacking the dealership on their FB page to just get them to stop calling me. I suspect Apple is doing it more for sales than for corporate. I suspect people buying stock are a little more sophisticated than the average Apple user.

The answer to the puzzle at 12:55 is that the phone takes up more space on the desk top surface because the length of the phone is greater than the diameter of the water bottle, but the height of the water bottle is greater than the height of the phone and the overall area and volume of the water bottle is greater than the phone so the water bottle takes up more space in general
For myself, a mini pc suited me due to wattage usage as well as size. I lived boondocked/traveling in a motorhome and wanted something I could run off my ecoflow / monitor. Yes, I could have gone with a new build, but I wanted something super small attached to the back of the monitor as I have it compact/tucked away easily (gaming + streaming). But I don't see it applicable in a lot of situations tbh.

When I worked at Microsoft we regarded 451 research as a joke, that was 15 years ago. I am amazed how they survive.
Them surviving makes perfect sense to me. They exist solely to be confirmation bias for executives with fragile egos.
Welp, apparently they survive feeding off corporations like Apple

Ahh, the good ol' days when a company knew not to push their brand more than "4 out of 5 dentists agree..."
I was always confused as a kid how 4/5 dentists agreed that every brand was better than every other brand.

Yeah the skull is... Not so business friendly

The main thing i loved about the NUCs, is that Intel had driver bundles for them on their site. One download, and you got all the latest drivers.
Yeah, pretty ironic
weird flex to test people who signed up for a class to teach them that thing in the first place.
weirder flex to pull on kids....and not adults who are also desperate to start a new life.
( it IS a class for new immigrants to sign up for readily available everywhere)
adults can blaze through a highschool or college course with ease because most adults have learned to learn and focus and work hard......
Adults dont because nearly nobody can afford to put everything on hold for 4 years take near zero pay and still pay for a family....
and by the time youre 30 you realize college has been a waste of time since the 60s because you could have learned all thats needed in a year or 2 at work (as an adult)
even most kids dont need it stretched to 4 years

I know that in the US it's normal to calculate taxes later but in the Netherlands, it's normally included in the product's price. So we aren't used to the price being a lot higher during checkout.
I wish it was like that in the US. It was annoying when I had to keep track of how much I was buying in the grocery store and add about 10% tax (tax isn't that high, just kept me under budget).

As an Australian who would love to purchase some of your merch but will never due to the outrageous shipping costs, I wish I had the cash available to make a few purchases during the free shipping offer.
Same here in europe. Shipping costs are more then the water bottle...
It's all due to their refusal to simply pick a European distribution company based on some weird fears. Since the merch sells quite well, they would easily get into any European distributor with a quite nice split. Shipping for the end customer would fall to almost nothing, sales would increase.

I started watching as the code ran out 😢
I have a Chevy Spark I bought back in 2015.
I would LOVE to see ISPs get a secret shopper...looking at you comcast
I’m big fan since 2015 still watching when I have time, and I’m sure Linus is great guy but he is a bit Norotic and all over the place and his wife is the one that hold everything together so kudos to here and keep up the great job your doing 🤟😊
Shipping is usually $50 so no wonder there's so many brits 😊
The answer to the puzzle at 12:55 is that the phone takes up more space on the desk top surface because the length of the phone is greater than the diameter of the water bottle, but the height of the water bottle is greater than the height of the phone and the overall area and volume of the water bottle is greater than the phone so the water bottle takes up more space in general
I hope Linus meantions at some point how high the shipping costs of that sale where.
