@@NavajoGrandma hello, I wanted to reply to a comment that you made in the video that you didn’t really have conditioners or even knew about them. I just wanted to say that marketed conditioners are a “scam” anyway, so you weren’t missing out. All of nature’s cleansers are also natural conditioners which is why you hair doesn’t feel as stripped as it does when you use shampoo. You can take it a step further and use cheap things in your kitchen to do a deep condition. From what a person from the reservation told me that everything is extremely overpriced. It’s a shame really because you are beautiful, knowledgeable and sympathetic people, which a lot of us don’t have.
@@baconandeggs9113 Loved your comment and yes I realized I didn’t miss out. I remember ages ago the first beer shampoo conditioner came out in the 70’s it ruined my hair. My bizhi soaked my hair in yucca twice then it seemed to reconstruct my natural sleek bouncey hair. My own mom told me I could use warm mixed mayonnaise and egg, which I did use then went back to yucca again. So now, I use yucca, dry my hair in the evenings, sleep on my Nikken magnet pillow and talk about better than conditioner, wow, your hair is shiny, soft, strong, vibrant. The magnets enhance the yucca and condition while you snore away, but listen to this, you won’t snore when using a magnet pillow. Awesome. My natural way of life without chemicals. Hugs to you Bo$$. Yucca is much more than just shampoo. It’s hand soap, dish soap, body wash. You can also pick off a leaf and use a rock to scrape the green stuff off. The green stuff is also used as soap. Also the leaves can be split into smaller strings and woven into rope. Also later in the year it will shoot a big stalk up from the middle, and will then grow flowers on that stalk. These flowers are edible (but they kinda taste like shit haha). Then if you wait a little longer, those flowers will turn into edible fruits that taste similar to bell peppers. So yeah. Pretty important plant haha.
You can boil the extracted fibers and use it to stich up a bad cut. Alot of different yucca etc have needle growing right on the top of the leaf.. Just have to drag it with a smooth stone on top of a flat one. My brother was half Souix and he taught me that. I never knew about the soap aspect of yucca. I have made soap using mimosa hostillis bark particularly root bark. It also is used as a brownish red dye.
This brings back memories of when my grandma & my nali lady would heat up water on the wood stove, pour the warm water in a bucket & wash my hair. They would always have the soap in a blue bird flour bag. I loved the sound of them rubbing their hands together to create a a foamy soap. I'm blessed to still have my grandma & my nali lady around, my grandma will be 91 years old this May & my Nali lady just turned 90 years old on February 5th. Times have definitely changed.

I’m “Mexican” and my mother and family don’t know anything about our indigenous ancestors. I recently gifted my mother a yucca plant for Mother’s Day. I will definitely teach her and show her your tips. You have no idea how much it means to us brainwashed “Latinos” to see videos like this where we can learn a thing or two.

My grandmother was from Kansas, miles out away from any city and growing up there was no money to buy much. I never learned what they used, but she made soap for washing EVERYTHING--hair, dishes,clothes, counters- from a plant up until she died in 1967. She said it was better than "store bought soap " Many plants have saps that may be similar to yucca.

Yucca is considered medicine according to my Dad who is from El Salvador. Here in the US. We eat it for the digestive healing properties. This is the first time I am seeing it for soemthibg completely different and im just blown away!

It is true, there is a plant for every ailment, when Christ was on this earth and went from tribe to tribe, that is what he blessed them to know as he was there healing them, but they asked Him, when He leaves what then? My Grammy had yucca plants and she used to use them to wash my hair. I have natural curly hair and it really helped to smooth my hair and give more volume. I can still remember how shiny and clean it was. Unfortunately when the state road crew came through and sprayed nasty chemicals in the ditch lines beside of the road, they got heavy handed with the weed killer and sprayed her beautiful yucca plants too and killed them🙄...I need to get me some more plants.

Thank you SO much Grandma with so much love and respect in a good way for your wisdom! I look forward to incorporating yucca shampoo. I use a lot of stinging nettle, chaga mushroom which grows on our birch trees, peppermint, raspberry leaf, sweetgrass, sage, western red cedar saw palmetto maca root among many others as a tea combo in my hair after washing for moisture and nourishment. Also as a potent hair oil. It is all marvelous and makes me feel strong. My hair has never been stronger shinier soft etc since I've incorporated traditional herbs from both my Native and African cultures. Feeling blessed!

He blessed them, taught them greatly & even technology plus more. The part here is using the root of the Yucca to wash & keep clean our body & hair. How holy & grateful we are retaining these teachings, there was more but by and by alot of the teachings faded as our secular world enticed and became our God's as it were or our druthers for man made stuff & foods, shampoos etc filled with chemicals for so called preservation. We've just started using fresh aloe, coconut oil, jojoba oil, honey, apple cider vinegar, and eggs along side cedar wood, rosemary, and lavender. I'm really excited to try yucca and saw palmetto. It does work and yet some people say that the old ways are wrong, but not so, these old ways are natural, no chemicals as we have given into using them and yes, then we wonder why we get skin problems, allergies, etc. Then when we stop all of a sudden our bodies feel right, calm, strong and happy. She taught me the values of prayer, work, and learning and she especially liked learning better ways to work so she would have more time for family and prayer. People have said I am like her. You inspired me to try this! We live on 4 acres in Cochise County and we have many yucca plants on our land. (Yucca elata) So we dug up a couple roots from plants that were being replaced by eldarica pine trees. I used a machete to cut off the upper part with the leaves. Then I washed the roots just like you said. The peeling was not easy but I did it with gloves on and my sturdy paring knife. (I am so amazed thinking about how people even figured out that this could be done!) I haven't pounded yet but I will and then I will wash my hair with it. I laughed when you said there was no conditioner. No kidding! We are so spoiled. Thank you for everything. I will let you know how it goes when I get it all done.
I would love the report. The reason for having the pieces of yucca in your hair is that when you wash it you are actually bringing out more saponins and that is what washes and called "talawoosh." I went into my bathtub no water got a pitcher of cold water and I poured the Yucca over my hair my body and hair it was the most spiritual beauty experience I’ve ever had!!! I literally felt like a baptism. Cleansing rebirth . and my hair has never looked so beautiful! I need to make it again soon my hair looked so much better with the yucca thank you and god bless .

I went in the garden and collected handful of baby nettles. My hands still burning. But tomorrow I will eat this green present from mother nature and welcome all the other wildherbs. Hi Navajo grandma! I'm from New Zealand👋🏻 I have Pacific Island/Polynesian ancestry. My mum and her family come from a little island called Niue(around 3-4 hours flight from NZ!) It's near Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, in the Pacific ocean. In the islands, our hair is our pride.. But different islands like different styles. Some like long, straight or wavy hair, some like bushy and thick hair.. Etc. I have long, thick and curly hair. The longest part of my hair is just past my butt, near the top of my thighs. I would like to try this method someday! It's very organic and natural 🌿 thank you for showing and sharing your culture with us❤️😁

I am Potawatomi and spend time with people from a Chippewa tribe in MI where I vacationed all summers of my life but not so much the last 15 years. I did have a formal naming ceremony which was an amazing, spiritual experience. My name is Noon-Mi-Guan-Que or Snowfeather. I wish I had a guide or advisor to teach me the traditional ways. when i saw you my heart sank, my grandma had native roots in her but we never knew about it until my mom had her dna test but it was too late cause she died recently. You resemble her so much, i promise not in a disrectful way. Your hair and eyes are so similar to how hers were when she was alive.

I taught from a young age to respect everyone. I appreciate a kind & loving heart. I like learn healthful information. We were told that we had Cherokee blood. I had my dna tested ,unfortunately I had no Cherokee. But cousins are half Cherokee. Oh well . My cousins & I would walk down grandma's country gravel road bare foot looking for rasberries. So grandma could make rasberry pie. Which she would make that & rhubarb pie. As a teen I didn't care much for country even though I was a little country & a little bit city. Now I love country. I LOVE THIS❤❤ I live in Southern Ohio and I have several yucca plants growing that has the big shoots out of the center that blooms. Are these the same type as yours in the desert? I would love to use these on my hair as it is very fine and then. These plants have to be over 75-100 years old and more than likely came from an old homestead thot use to be on another part of our farm. I look forward to hearing from you Navajo Grandma, bless you. Make sure it's yucca baccata. Should have slender leaves, not wide. You described it pretty good but some still have growing stems with white flowers. Ask your garden store. Cut off a leaf & show them. Hugs, Navajo Grandma

I just found this video today and I'm already in love with your energy! I've been on quite a tumultuous hair journey for a few years (from hating it and bleaching it every few months to finally embracing my natural curls and deciding to put the chemicals down haha) and I can already tell that your videos are a hidden treasure on this platform! I'm trying to grow my hair again after having about a year of growth chopped off thanks to a botched cut, and want to treat my hair with the love and respect that it deserves whilst also having as little environmental impact as possible. I remember my grandma's friend down the road making this and she gave some to my grandma to put on mine and my sister's hair while we stayed with her for the summer. I do remember that our noggins were really clean. I'm black and Native and our hair was pristine through the summer. Hardly used any products. Most of my life we used "Black products", but 10 years ago, I decided to use more homemade products and I think I'm going to try this. Pray that I don't mess it up. Also if you would like to start a Navajo language UA-cam Series, I would not be mad.
im navajo from my dads side but i was raised as mexican from my mom, so i missed out on a lot of the culture from my father. he is estranged from his mom who lives on the reservation he grew up in, so even now when i am grown i have no idea where to begin learning about half of me. thank you for sharing your knowledge it means so much to someone who wants so badly to be more connected to my navajo side ❤

Such a wonderful channel to have stumbled upon. I, too, am a Grandma, a Hispanic one. I grew up in northern NM and LOVED my grandma, who also did not have running water. She warmed her home and cooked with a wood stove. I learned so much from her way of living and continue to practice many of them all while living in the city of Albuquerque. There is a peace in my heart and my home that comes from the ways of simplicity I grew up with. I am a retired teacher and taught one of those years on the Jicarilla reservation. Quiet, simple and peaceful. I look forward to hearing your experiences and possibly sharing some with you. ☺️

I started using yucca root for my shampoo about a month ago and follow up with a rosemary apple cider vinegar rinse, my hair has never been healthier! I actually went for a haircut a few days ago and my hairdresser said my hair was nice and full and thicker. I am not Native American, but did all this research on the traditional hair care knowing that typically Native Americans have beautiful, long, thick, hair that doesn’t seem to grey early. Perhaps this is just my experience, but I’m so glad I researched this! It’s transformed my routine! I plan to plant a yucca in my yard so that I can harvest my own. Thank you for this video, this is the first one I watched and will be watching the rest! I just love learning about herbalism and utilizing the resources we have on hand.
Susan this is a great testimonial and hope others take the time to read this. Yes what you have experienced does occur as you now know. Thank you for your research as few don't realize the goodness of this Yucca plant. A word of advice. If you have ever planted peppermint or mint, it will grow ferociously everywhere if you do not give it boundaries. Soon your yard will be full of mint. Same as the Yucca. So give your yucca boundaries and more will sprout. Give enough room like an 8X10 to being with and allow those roots to bear more. That is what most do not understand. I laugh when some say I am cutting down my yucca instead of the joy of having one or two. So have a wonderful time, make sure your soil is more sandy, do not over water. @@NavajoGrandma thank you for the advice! I live in NE Ohio off Lake Erie so we have rich sandy loom soil. Yucca grows very well here, it’s in a lot of yards, so I know it will be easy to grow. I’ve heard how it can multiply like crazy, I’ll definitely have to consider ways to control it by using fencing or some other means. As far as research goes, I’ve been interested in herbs and medicinal plants for a few years now but recently can’t get enough of the traditional ways the natives used. So I very much appreciate your channel and videos!!

@@NavajoGrandma hello, I wanted to reply to a comment that you made in the video that you didn’t really have conditioners or even knew about them.
I just wanted to say that marketed conditioners are a “scam” anyway, so you weren’t missing out. All of nature’s cleansers are also natural conditioners which is why you hair doesn’t feel as stripped as it does when you use shampoo. You can take it a step further and use cheap things in your kitchen to do a deep condition.
From what a person from the reservation told me that everything is extremely overpriced. It’s a shame really because you are beautiful, knowledgeable and sympathetic people, which a lot of us don’t have.
@@baconandeggs9113 Loved your comment and yes I realized I didn’t miss out. I remember ages ago the first beer shampoo conditioner came out in the 70’s it ruined my hair. My bizhi soaked my hair in yucca twice then it seemed to reconstruct my natural sleek bouncey hair. My own mom told me I could use warm mixed mayonnaise and egg, which I did use then went back to yucca again. So now, I use yucca, dry my hair in the evenings, sleep on my Nikken magnet pillow and talk about better than conditioner, wow, your hair is shiny, soft, strong, vibrant. The magnets enhance the yucca and condition while you snore away, but listen to this, you won’t snore when using a magnet pillow. Awesome. My natural way of life without chemicals. Hugs to you Bo$$. Yucca is much more than just shampoo. It’s hand soap, dish soap, body wash. You can also pick off a leaf and use a rock to scrape the green stuff off. The green stuff is also used as soap. Also the leaves can be split into smaller strings and woven into rope. Also later in the year it will shoot a big stalk up from the middle, and will then grow flowers on that stalk. These flowers are edible (but they kinda taste like shit haha). Then if you wait a little longer, those flowers will turn into edible fruits that taste similar to bell peppers. So yeah. Pretty important plant haha.

Try sautéing the flower petals, after they’re cooked a little the bitter taste mostly goes away, and they taste a bit like zucchini!

You can boil the extracted fibers and use it to stich up a bad cut. Alot of different yucca etc have needle growing right on the top of the leaf.. Just have to drag it with a smooth stone on top of a flat one. My brother was half Souix and he taught me that. I never knew about the soap aspect of yucca. I have made soap using mimosa hostillis bark particularly root bark. It also is used as a brownish red dye.

This brings back memories of when my grandma & my nali lady would heat up water on the wood stove, pour the warm water in a bucket & wash my hair. They would always have the soap in a blue bird flour bag. I loved the sound of them rubbing their hands together to create a a foamy soap. I'm blessed to still have my grandma & my nali lady around, my grandma will be 91 years old this May & my Nali lady just turned 90 years old on February 5th. Times have definitely changed.

My grandmother was from Kansas, miles out away from any city and growing up there was no money to buy much. I never learned what they used, but she made soap for washing EVERYTHING--hair, dishes,clothes, counters- from a plant up until she died in 1967. She said it was better than "store bought soap " Many plants have saps that may be similar to yucca.

My Grammy had yucca plants and she used to use them to wash my hair. I have natural curly hair and it really helped to smooth my hair and give more volume. I can still remember how shiny and clean it was. Unfortunately when the state road crew came through and sprayed nasty chemicals in the ditch lines beside of the road, they got heavy handed with the weed killer and sprayed her beautiful yucca plants too and killed them🙄...I need to get me some more plants.

I am not completely computer savvy but it seemed like there was so much expectations and I lost thousands of dollars when I stopped Patreon. I asked them about the money owed but they said it was used for my releasing me from Patreon. So many threw up when I told them this. So I did stop. I don't want payments for what I present. I use a lot of stinging nettle, chaga mushroom which grows on our birch trees, peppermint, raspberry leaf, sweetgrass, sage, western red cedar saw palmetto maca root among many others as a tea combo in my hair after washing for moisture and nourishment. Also as a potent hair oil. It is all marvelous and makes me feel strong. My hair has never been stronger shinier soft etc since I've incorporated traditional herbs from both my Native and African cultures. Feeling blessed!

He blessed them, taught them greatly & even technology plus more. The part here is using the root of the Yucca to wash & keep clean our body & hair. How holy & grateful we are retaining these teachings, there was more but by and by alot of the teachings faded as our secular world enticed and became our God's as it were or our druthers for man made stuff & foods, shampoos etc filled with chemicals for so called preservation. We've just started using fresh aloe, coconut oil, jojoba oil, honey, apple cider vinegar, and eggs along side cedar wood, rosemary, and lavender. I'm really excited to try yucca and saw palmetto. You inspired me to try this! We live on 4 acres in Cochise County and we have many yucca plants on our land. (Yucca elata) So we dug up a couple roots from plants that were being replaced by eldarica pine trees. I used a machete to cut off the upper part with the leaves. Then I washed the roots just like you said. The peeling was not easy but I did it with gloves on and my sturdy paring knife. (I am so amazed thinking about how people even figured out that this could be done!) I haven't pounded yet but I will and then I will wash my hair with it. I laughed when you said there was no conditioner. No kidding! We are so spoiled. Thank you for everything. I will let you know how it goes when I get it all done.
I would love the report. The reason for having the pieces of yucca in your hair is that when you wash it you are actually bringing out more saponins and that is what washes and called "talawoosh." I went into my bathtub no water got a pitcher of cold water and I poured the Yucca over my hair my body and hair it was the most spiritual beauty experience I’ve ever had!!! Hi Navajo grandma! I'm from New Zealand👋🏻 I have Pacific Island/Polynesian ancestry. My mum and her family come from a little island called Niue(around 3-4 hours flight from NZ!) It's near Fiji, Samoa and Tonga, in the Pacific ocean. In the islands, our hair is our pride.. But different islands like different styles. Some like long, straight or wavy hair, some like bushy and thick hair.. Etc. I have long, thick and curly hair. The longest part of my hair is just past my butt, near the top of my thighs. I would like to try this method someday! It's very organic and natural 🌿 thank you for showing and sharing your culture with us❤️😁

when i saw you my heart sank, my grandma had native roots in her but we never knew about it until my mom had her dna test but it was too late cause she died recently. You resemble her so much, i promise not in a disrectful way. Your hair and eyes are so similar to how hers were when she was alive.

I hope you remember and write down her history from "your eyes and experiences," not your mother, or siblings experience, but your perspective of your dear grandmother. We were told that we had Cherokee blood. I had my dna tested ,unfortunately I had no Cherokee. But cousins are half Cherokee. Oh well . My cousins & I would walk down grandma's country gravel road bare foot looking for rasberries. So grandma could make rasberry pie. Which she would make that & rhubarb pie.

Me too!! 👌👍👍 I am a homeopathic, natural loving Navajo Grandma. People try to go to regular doctors and I use the natural remedies to bless myself with prayer. Our consistent efforts do pay off and it is done thru much wisdom too. If there is something quite dire then there are some doctors. Always use wisdom and a prayer for discernment. I LOVE THIS❤❤ I live in Southern Ohio and I have several yucca plants growing that has the big shoots out of the center that blooms. Are these the same type as yours in the desert? I would love to use these on my hair as it is very fine and then. These plants have to be over 75-100 years old and more than likely came from an old homestead thot use to be on another part of our farm. I look forward to hearing from you Navajo Grandma, bless you. Make sure it's yucca baccata. Should have slender leaves, not wide. You described it pretty good but some still have growing stems with white flowers. Ask your garden store. Cut off a leaf & show them. Hugs, Navajo Grandma

I just found this video today and I'm already in love with your energy! I've been on quite a tumultuous hair journey for a few years (from hating it and bleaching it every few months to finally embracing my natural curls and deciding to put the chemicals down haha) and I can already tell that your videos are a hidden treasure on this platform! I'm trying to grow my hair again after having about a year of growth chopped off thanks to a botched cut, and want to treat my hair with the love and respect that it deserves whilst also having as little environmental impact as possible. It's incredible how everything we already need is growing all around us, I have sooo many yucca plants growing in my garden but never thought of using them on my hair! I love learning about how different cultures take care of themselves by relying on nature's bounty for support. I'm Indian but I live in Malaysia and my ancestors would use aritha and shikakai to wash our hair long before commercial shampoo and conditioner came along. In the long run if you use what is natural you don't be getting diseases, sickness, balded head, allergies, etc. Stay with the natural and remain healthy. I remember my grandma's friend down the road making this and she gave some to my grandma to put on mine and my sister's hair while we stayed with her for the summer. I do remember that our noggins were really clean. I'm black and Native and our hair was pristine through the summer. Hardly used any products. Most of my life we used "Black products", but 10 years ago, I decided to use more homemade products and I think I'm going to try this. Pray that I don't mess it up. Also if you would like to start a Navajo language UA-cam Series, I would not be mad.

im navajo from my dads side but i was raised as mexican from my mom, so i missed out on a lot of the culture from my father. he is estranged from his mom who lives on the reservation he grew up in, so even now when i am grown i have no idea where to begin learning about half of me. thank you for sharing your knowledge it means so much to someone who wants so badly to be more connected to my navajo side ❤

Such a wonderful channel to have stumbled upon. I, too, am a Grandma, a Hispanic one. I grew up in northern NM and LOVED my grandma, who also did not have running water. She warmed her home and cooked with a wood stove. I learned so much from her way of living and continue to practice many of them all while living in the city of Albuquerque. There is a peace in my heart and my home that comes from the ways of simplicity I grew up with. I am a retired teacher and taught one of those years on the Jicarilla reservation. Quiet, simple and peaceful. I look forward to hearing your experiences and possibly sharing some with you. ☺️

I started using yucca root for my shampoo about a month ago and follow up with a rosemary apple cider vinegar rinse, my hair has never been healthier! I actually went for a haircut a few days ago and my hairdresser said my hair was nice and full and thicker. I am not Native American, but did all this research on the traditional hair care knowing that typically Native Americans have beautiful, long, thick, hair that doesn’t seem to grey early. Perhaps this is just my experience, but I’m so glad I researched this! It’s transformed my routine! I plan to plant a yucca in my yard so that I can harvest my own. Thank you for this video, this is the first one I watched and will be watching the rest! I just love learning about herbalism and utilizing the resources we have on hand.
Susan this is a great testimonial and hope others take the time to read this. Yes what you have experienced does occur as you now know. Thank you for your research as few don't realize the goodness of this Yucca plant. A word of advice. If you have ever planted peppermint or mint, it will grow ferociously everywhere if you do not give it boundaries. Soon your yard will be full of mint. Same as the Yucca. So give your yucca boundaries and more will sprout. Give enough room like an 8X10 to being with and allow those roots to bear more. That is what most do not understand. I laugh when some say I am cutting down my yucca instead of the joy of having one or two. So have a wonderful time, make sure your soil is more sandy, do not over water. Do your research on this as well. I don't know your longitude and latitude so that is a factor too. Happy planting and your beautiful mane!! Hugs. Navajo Grandma
@@NavajoGrandma thank you for the advice! I live in NE Ohio off Lake Erie so we have rich sandy loom soil. Yucca grows very well here, it’s in a lot of yards, so I know it will be easy to grow. I’ve heard how it can multiply like crazy, I’ll definitely have to consider ways to control it by using fencing or some other means. As far as research goes, I’ve been interested in herbs and medicinal plants for a few years now but recently can’t get enough of the traditional ways the natives used. So I very much appreciate your channel and videos!!
@@susanhallen2787 I don't know what you mean by fencing, but whatever you use for boundaries, make sure it is deep where the roots don't meander all over your yard. I told you its like planting mint, thats what they do. They take over your grass. Except these yucca roots are deep. Good luck. Navajo Grandma
