  • Cutting and shaping Agates and chalcedony that we have collected in our local creeks in South East Queensland Australia, I prepare them for the rock tumbler to try and get the best results. Once thats done, we take a quick look at the process of rock tumbling, and then see how they turn out after being polished. The end result is a nice little mixed bag of polished agates and chalcedony of different kinds all self collected from our Aussie rockhounding adventures. I hope you enjoy!

    I love that blue rock! I’ve done a lot of tumbling. I’d suggest not using plastic pellets in your first stage. I’ve done that several times and always regretted it. Plastic protects the rocks as you said, but it slows down the grinding in the process. In the first stage, you want to grind away as much as possible, then use plastic in the later stages. I’d also suggest getting some aluminum oxide for the later stages. I start with aluminum oxide instead of silicon carbide at the 500 grit stage. The grit rounds off more instead of breaking and gives a better polish. Keep on tumbling, I’d love to see how more of your rocks turn out.

      Hey mate!!!!! Oh man thank you for the knowledge sharing dude! I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I used the pellets in the first round cause I was afraid the rocks would get too worn down haha! But I’m gonna go without it next batch for sure. I filmed the beginning of this before I came across your channel and then I wanted to suggest your videos to others also. Your results are amazing! I’m humbled from your help man. Thank you! You seriously rock!!!!!

    Wow! That Blue turned out so beautifully! Very nice selection of stones, I like how you shaped them beforehand gave them a bit of additional character. I use my littles as a bit of filler in the tumbler too, take up some of the space the larger ones wouldn't be in contact with other stones. Nice job thanks for sharing.

    I read about how to make an industrial tumbler out of a rear axle of a big semi truck with the rims and tires in place. You want to cut an opening in the highest part of the rim to load rocks. The article said a cover is not needed but I always thought if I was going to do one I would have a hinged door sealed with inner tube rubber. The idea is to set up a motor geared down so the tires rotate slowly and all the rocks stay in the lowest part of the tire at all times tumbling over each other. Each tire can hold about 100 lbs of rocks and you have 4 tires going at all times each one with a different grit. Always use same tire for the same grit. You rotate the rocks once a week and you have a 100 lbs of polished tumbled stones each week.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 років тому

      Oh wow! That sounds super efficient too. I bet the rocks could also be a lot bigger than if it was the 3 pounder that I use. This sounds really cool 👌

      Oh yeah, tumbling and shining them up is beautiful, but it’s always the rough that catches they eye out in the creeks, can’t beat that beauty of seeing it the first time.

    Oh these are so beautiful! I love how you cut them to fit the natural shape of the stones. I am super jealous (in a good way) of your ability to tumble them. I live in a tiny apartment so having a tumbler running for 6 weeks isn't a good plan lol. The last tiny one I could totally see as a ring and Blue would make a stunning pendant... just saying lol

    Hi Rookie! Beautiful end results! I started out on a Thumblers Industrial UV 10 Vibratory Tumbler and have never used a rotary tumbler, and I have to say, how can you stand to WAIT so long??? I would go nuts! I can have a batch done in 7 to 10 days and even then I get antsy! LOL. I have been told that this is one of the hardest to learn on. I had gotten a hole in the bottom of my barrel so I talked with the very awesome people at Thumblers (AL & Laura) and I was told that I had actually wore it out! I guess that is the downfall on only having 1, but hey it lasted over a year with near constant use! I only have 3 steps for polishing so I'm working on having 3 tumblers. I don't know why but it seems like nobody seems to use the "Vibes" much. I love mine! I notice that the rotary seems to put more of a roundness to the rocks while the vibe is more angular. I'm like you, I clean my Specimens up really well before I put them in. Seeing as how I'm not into mass production I have time for that. As always Love you videos! Maybe I should do a video on Vibratory Tumblers?! LOL! Keep on Keeping it Raw & Real!! I love it! From your fellow Rookiette Rockhounder Stateside AZ!

      Nancy Thompson
      It needs dedication and there are no shortcuts, believe me I've tried everything and the only way is the correct way.
      Rough grits getting finer each time and polish.
      Almost strict clinical practices every time, just one tiny piece of grit not washed off and the whole previous process has to be repeated.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 років тому +1

      Nancy Thompson
      Thank you Nancy!
      I’d say go for it! It’s so rewarding. But Symon knows what he’s talking about, it’s something that takes strict measurements etc. like when I had the barrel too full, it would have turned out very different if I hadn’t taken some out. But still, it’s totally enjoyable. 😊

    • @Rookie_Rockounding

    • @symonsheppard5519
      @symonsheppard5519 5 років тому +1

      Rookie Rockhounding
      It can't be stressed enough how the process must be clinical so no cross contamination of grits can occur, if you don't clean every speck of grit, off the next tumble will be a waste of time.
