    I thought this is a quick and easy video to make, but end up I've been working on it for 1.5 months as I keep tweaking/adding/removing some of the tips I shared in this video. So anyway I hope you can learn something new and useful from this video. And if you have any cool tips or tricks about Lumix cameras, please share them with us!

    This video should be compulsory learning for every Lumix user. I'm one of those people that read the user manual cover to cover, but I know I'm a minority and different people learn in different ways. You covered the topics that typically lead to questions on user forums like the real-time preview and the custom modes.
    Some reviewers complain about the Lumix cameras still not having a dedicated stills-movie switch like you nowadays see with some brands but I think the Lumix approach is superior. With custom modes it's like having (at most) 13 cameras in one which can be switched using the mode dial each with their own quick menu setup and function button assignments. Each can act as a dedicated stills or movie mode. And you can even specify when the custom mode should forget any changes you made to it and reset to its initial values. I love the customization possibilities of these cameras.

    I think it's great that you explain why there's an off switch for some features that seem like everyone would want to have enabled at all times. I often wonder this about some features. For example, you can force lower ISO on some cameras/lenses and I wonder why it's not able to go that low by default. I assume it affects image quality in some way. But thanks for explaining constant preview! Very helpful.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  3 місяці тому

      if you go below native ISO, the camera basically just use software to lower the exposure and you are giving up the highlight

    Great video with real life examples and usage! The tip with the grid lines and frame marker preview to have two framing markers at the same time, when filming open gate @24:14, is really great! Including, the custom frame marker for 65:24 aspect ratio, @26:44, for high resolution photos shows you really put a lot of work into this video! Thank you for the tips!!! Excellent video for beginner users and potential new users!
    I have a couple of tips. When relocating the focus area (eg. by tapping the screen), pressing resets the focus rectangle to the center.
    On newer Panasonics one of the control dials is used to jump between main menus, the other one is used to change the page inside one of menus, and the thumb wheel (or up and down keypad buttons) is used to select the next/previous menu item. On older Panasonics, it's the that can be used to jump to the next page on the menu.

    Hi Richard, I'm new to dual iso and don't understand it very well. This video was so precise and clear. Have you done one like this, explaining so clearly, for "how to implement and use the dual iso in Lumix S5ii cameras. Thank you.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Рік тому

      Hi David, thank you.
      Re dual ISO, I haven't done any video about it. But unless you want to extract the absolute best from the sensor, just leave it "auto" is fine and that's what I use myself.
      While you maybe able to get better image quality if you manually change the Dual ISO setting, the difference is usually not that big, and it only affects a small range of ISO. But in return there is a lot of hassle as you have to remember to switch the ISO mode as you are changing ISO value. Hope that helps

      in normal photo modes, pressing REC button would change to auto exposure by default. But on some cameras there is an option "Auto Exposure in P/A/S/M" in the "gear" screen that allows it to use your exposure value instead.

    Hi Richard, I am using the original S5 camera and I shot exclusively photos before, however now I shoot more and more short videos for models etc.
    My question is what is the best setting for video for my scenario?
    I struggle with keeping my subject (model) in focus when I try to make footage with them where they are stationary and I move around them and move closer or further from them and move the camera up and down shooting face, bodyparts etc. And after I have the focus e.g.: on their face and I move back the camera instantly loses focus and ruins the footage. I would at least expect the camera to keep focus on the face if I move away or closer to the model.
    What setting do you recommend to use on the S5, not the S5II.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Рік тому +1

      when you say loses focus, is it that the autofocus response too quickly? or it drift to background?
      what is the AF Setting you use?
      I usually use Full Area AF with human detection. and that works quite well with me.
      If i want the AF to be smoother (for slow moving scene) i would dial down the AF Sensitivity/speed.
      if i want faster AF speed, i would dial up those settings, but the transition would not be as smooth.
      it's really hard to say what's wrong, if you show me some test footage, maybe i can help a bit more.

    • @iammz81
      @iammz81 Рік тому

      @@TheRealRichardWong When I say it loses focus, what happens is. I have the focus on the face of my model, I move back and the face gets out of focus, and the camera starts focusing and need to wait until it latches focus again. I did not change anything in sensitivity or speed, because I don't know what would be better to slow down the speed or crank up the sensitivity? Or the other way around. I could send you footage.

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Рік тому

      if it takes one or two second for camera to catch up the focus, it sounds like your camera movement was a bit too fast for the autofocus system to catch up (DFD autofocus is not the fastest) You can try shoot with a smaller aperture, or increase the autofocus speed setting, or shoot at faster frame rate (eg 30fps, 50fps or 60fps) and see if that helps?

    • @iammz81
      @iammz81 Рік тому

      @@TheRealRichardWong I use the lens on 1.8 that is why I bought it.. and 40 fps if Im not mistaken.. :)

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  Рік тому

      @@iammz81 You probably shooting in 24fps (don't think you can shoot in 40fps on the S5 :) ) If you want to shoot in f/1.8 with S5, and you want the target in focus, you need to make any movement (subject or camera) in slower speed. It should work ok, but S5's autofocus is not really fastest. S5II is much much faster in comparison.
