The 427 cammer was designed to be an oval track engine. Running at basically wide open making peak power while at wide open for long durations. Ford never(to my knowledge) had any intention of putting it into drag cars. Other people had that idea, because the thing put out monster HP. But it was not designed for that type of "burst" and certainly did not leave a lot open for improvement especially with 70's technology. It was made to beat the hemi at the circle track. It probably would have, at least at first, but we will never know now.
Later, OHC was used because it was a way to make an engine shorter and wider, which plays nice with front wheel drive and aero/chassis design.
However, I 1000% agree with Uncle Tony on Ford's OHC designs. I owned a 94 Mustang(sold to my boy now) and was an impressionable young man right when all those changes to the Mustang were going on. Ford tried to tell the public that the 4.6 had the same HP and torque as the 5.0. It did not, they had under rated the 5.0 for a few years prior to the 4.6, especially the Cobra. People tried to mod the 4.6, but found out the hard way it cost exponentially more and was exponentially more complicated.
To add insult to injury, Ford decided the 351W was to nice for the trucks and stuck the 5.4 in them instead. All to the tune of less power for the same MPG.
Driving the point home, Ford then also decided it would spend some serious research money on DOHC versions of these engines. The original Cobra engine had a block made in Italy that could withstand 1000HP. This of course was dropped after a few years as Ford had no intention of going past the 300 mark.
Even worse, they made a DOHC 5.4 that was HEAPS better then the SOHC version. We are talking 260HP/350lbft sohc vs 300HP/355lbft. But that's not even the whole story, the power curves of these engines don;t compare either, with the DOHC having a much flatter torque curve to go along with it's much higher peak HP. So did Ford offer this better engine to the public? NO, they stuck it in the Lincoln Navigator to get buried. The SVT team stole a few to build some cars with, which all that did was cause the public to wonder why the engine wasn't available in a Mustang or actual pickup.
Ford continued to try to alter and improve this lemon of a platform for 15 years. IMO, even though I was a Ford guy(351W is still a favorite) when, after a decade of failing, Ford decided to just make a 3V version of the same garbage engine rather then ditch it, I have never looked back. Sure sure coyote whatever, I bought an AWD Hemi Charger for a daily to drive in WI. Not that the HEMi is the perfect mill, but while Ford was trying to pass a 300HP 3v crap V8 as a performance engine, Chrysler was dropping 350-450 HP engines into cars(circa 2006) Nowdays Ford is pushing ecoboost, 4 cylander Mustangs and electric hybrids.
Ford: RIP circa 1996. (honorable mention to John Colleti and the SVT team for at least trying to keep something going for a few more years after, but it was like weekend at Bernies in the end)

In 98-2001ish, Ford and the remnants of the Ford-BF Goodrich Rough Riders factory off-road effort (Dan Smith/Dave Ashley) raced the Duralast F150 trophy truck in SCORE with a DOHC 5.4 that was a/the test bed for that engine. It was one screaming machine with it's 8 into 1 exhaust and did pretty well.

    • @Motor-City-Mike
      @Motor-City-Mike 4 роки тому +24

You know why the 5.4 never made it into a production car, it was just too damned tall, why the four valve didn't make it into an F series I'll never know either.
Had the 4.6 stayed on track - the four valve was there from the beginning in the Lincoln MK VIII, aluminum block and all, so production wasn't the issue - it's history would (and should) be different.
Pre - production had test mules on the dyno making over 400 HP, fox bodies running 160+ mph in vehicle testing, service life testing off the charts.
There's a whole lot of Crown Vics out there with over 300k miles on the original engines.
All things 4.6 pointed to an engine of magical success, and then the shit hit the fan.
Someone decided four valves were too expensive to put into everything so the two valve got the nod and with no breathing 281 cubic inches is a lame duck without a turbo/supercharger.
So then the PI head, better but no four valve, three valves better yet but again not enough.
Along the way they let the air out of the Cobra, some idiot hadn't just decided pressed on cam lobes were cheaper but was so stupid that they couldn't press them on timed properly...
I can write a short story on the 4.6, I knew/know plenty of the characters in its development and production life, much of it went on less than a mile from my shop and discussed at length during meals at the Romeo Cafe.
To sum it up, the bean counters MURDERED what could have been as successful of an engine as the 221/260/289/302/351W, but saving $.00000121 per unit was somehow more important, and I can promise those idiots still have jobs after costing Ford Millions more than claim they saved.
I'm one of the Windsors biggest fans, but the 4.6 could have been damned near as good.

I guess they had to stick the cam somewhere and I don't see them voluntarily sticking where I'd like to stick it!!! And, it's not even the camshafts or the chains... it's that they don't tell people that the hydraulic tensioner is a service item and the way they route the oil to them to get the pressure. And yeah, the plastic cassettes holding the chains in place... I don't see how they don't have a class action suit against them. That should at least be a dealer replacement free of charge. They knew, know they're junk. The sad thing is, they're everywhere... Exploders of course, but Rangers, Mustangs, Mercury SUV and even Land Rover. I too would have thought the 7.3l Godzilla motor was a big block coming in at 445ci. But UT says in this video that it’s a small block. And indeed, Ford themselves state that this engine is a small block. It’s barely bigger in size than the 351 Windsor. This thing is going to be crazy fast once the aftermarket starts figuring it out and Godzilla trucks start stacking up in wrecking yards.

I love a good pushrod motor, but overhead cam engines will always squeeze out the the most power per cubic inch. Biggest problem with overhead cam engines is simply the amount of real estate they consume. As far as dependability, you'd be hard pressed to more 300-400K engines out in circulation than the original 2V motors that came in the Crown Vics, not to mention all the Triton 2V motors that came in the trucks. The 4.0L SOHC Exploder motor was an abortion. As a Ford guy, I'm excited to see what some motorheads with some deep pockets will be able to do with the 7.3L.

I agree with you. I just found out about it a few months ago and when I looked at it that’s what hit me the drag race potential. Even though I’m a Mopar guy I’ve built and raced all the big 3 companies motors. But when I got a 70 F250 pickup many moons ago and decided to rebuild the fe390 I got a engine book on all engines that Ford built. What amazing to me was all the different engine platforms ford had. Then I was thinking about the production line tooling costs in that they needed to retool or build a complete engine line for all these different engines they produced. The cost involved and the equipment purchased must have been out of sight. The people that made the money was these companies selling Ford the machine tooling for each engine platform because everything was different I could not understand the rational behind it because they needed a different line for each engine model. I cannot understand why they didn’t do more standardization.

There's some duplication in the various engines. For example, the 300 inline six uses the same pistons as the 390, and Ford did make a really weird 200ci inline 4 that's a 300 minus the back two cylinders. Mid 1980s Ford rangers could get that motor, came with kinsler fuel injection!

Mod motor, ahh, coyote, hey v10! How about.... Yeah if Ford would of built the Windsor in 54 instead of the Y block, and 385 series instead of the fe in 58 and then stuck to them....Ford would of had the aftermarket that Chevy had. Ford ruled with the flathead (all the aftermarket) up until 55 when Chevy came out with the Small block. If the Y block would of been good, it would of continued fords aftermarket dominance. She's a Windsor motor, probably only needs an oil change and fresh filters all around to run for another 20 years if you're not pushing her hard. After sitting that long, you're definitely going to need to buy a case of fuel filters to deal with the varnish. Replace them every time the motor sounds like it is running out of gas.

Martin Brodel or Brodel Nation channel, he fully endorses Bear's products. in the oil I'd go a round of "Restore" first (good for rings bearings and seals), then a year later half bottle Bear's oil treatment stop-leak stuff (as recommended!). his gas treatment is also supposed to be THE stuff to use. chemicals CAN do wonders to bring an engine back up, Project Farm channel used "Restore" on an older diesel tractor, before had a couple cylinders low on compression, after was 285-300 PSI for all, and a year later too! give it a set of fresh plugs (after 1000 mi of "Restore"), ignition wires, and check the timing, odds are good it'll run like a champ without REALLY doing anything special or difficult.

    • @davenhla

If it has hiccups or hesitation, it's prolly fuel related as others have said.
If you mean give it a nudge in power, well, 90's Ford EFI doesn't play nice with much of anything. That truck will be a work horse till 300k miles easy, but if you want more giddyup all you can really do is exhaust work. Ditch the cats(unless you need them for inspection) and put a nice Gibson muffler on(will flow without the noise, its a utility box truck haha)
Beyond that you would have to ditch the whole efi, intake the works, buy an MSD box to run the ignition and go carb. Not worth it for an 800 dollar truck haha. You can beef up the EFI but it's $$$, an intake alone will run what you paid for the truck unless you can find one at a swap form an old Lightning.

@@ScottKenny1978 It's a 800 dollar truck. Ford didn't put mass air on the 351W till the last year of production for the trucks, cept for california i think got it a little earlier. The computers for the trucks actually add timing, you can't even adjust the advance without it detonating unless you go aftermarket ignition. He doesn't have a mustang or he wouldn't have all the issues and I wouldn't have replied as such. In order to adjust timing, do a cam, or almost anything etc he would have to find a 96/97 mass air and ecm+harness, or put a MSD box or something on. Prolly not for an 800 dollar truck unless he can find swap stuff or pull a part. He can't really even dip into mustang aftermarket because it is a 351. I have even read horror stories about people putting supposedly good tuners on them and the tuner adjusting the advance/max timing only to have the stock ecm add even more and detonate the crap out of their ride.
I am sure there is someone more knowledgable then me on this, plus I havent looked in several years if aftermarket has work arounds, but usually the older something gets the less likely companies will invest in aftermarket for it. But for a guy that basically said he doesn;t know where to start, IMO suggesting a new wire harness/ecm etc so he could even start seemed out of line for an 800 dollar truck. Changing pipes is easy and cheap.

I never understood why they went to that sohc engine. It had no benefit at all over a pushrod design and was more complicated/expensive to produce. The DOHC at least have the benefits of more valves.

    • @mfree80286
      @mfree80286 4 роки тому +1

The benefits are breathing and in the production failure rate for the blocks. You're moving an entire series of machining steps and a bunch of casting cores off the block, less to screw up at the foundry... and you're moving them to smaller parts that are easier to manage. You also end up with a package that's easy to adapt new technology to... which they eventually did, adding VVT phasers and such. Emissions, and both engine and production efficiency is why, and they just took the tradeoffs on maintainability and packaging.
Hey, at least they didn't drive the cams with a belt...

Just my opinion, but I go by bore centers to determine if it’s a “small block” or “big block.” At 115mm (4.527 inches), this is a bit bigger than the upper end of small blocks, which are in the 4.38-4.46 range. But it’s much closer the small blocks than the 4.75-5” big blocks.
Whatever we’ll call it, a 4.22” bore is something to work with!

Only problem I have seen that bugs me Uncle Tony is that Ford again did the "Late Terminator Mistake" by choosing Sintered rods and yes while they are cheap to produce and the way the crack them so each cap can only fit its intended rod and in one direction only, while its a good idea as soon as you start trying to get serious with the engine you start getting really short rod motors lol BUT I agree wholeheartedly the rest of the engine is built to party and FORKS sake those heads are all ive ever dreamed of and STOCK taking a big boy cam not a tiny sub .500 cam like the 460s got and the design BEGS to have 8 individual stacks and sit in front of every 32 coupe on the street... I think this engine would be awesome to reintroduce the land yachts like a retro Galaxy, Torino, Lincoln Mk series, etc.

Those powdered metal rods have been a nightmare forever.
Back when the Romeo engine was in full swing my friend worked in the repair bay at Romeo Engine, and damned if some idiot wouldn't put a rod cap on backwards from time to time....
So, tear a complete engine down and hang another piston and rod.
In production they don't swap the piston to another rod for repair, they just toss the assembly and replace it.
Those pressed metal rods start out as a headache and get that much worse throughout their uses.

After years of ford doing things wrong, I’m so happy to see them starting to do things right. After the tritons (granted the 2 valves were reliable, if you ignore it sending plugs into orbit, all of them are dogs though), the 6.0 (yes you can make them reliable, but they’re issues that shouldn’t happen), the 6.4l boat anchor and some of the other heaps they’ve sold in recent years, it’s so nice to see new takes on proven tech. With the new bronco, the Godzilla and even the potential the ranger could have, I can say this is the first time in my life that I’m excited about where ford is going.

  • @harryguy76

The only reason Ford went with the OHC V8 engines is so they could juice their customers on more replacement parts and more importantly...if people didn't properly maintain them the had a shorter life expectancy...which equaled more part sales and labor costs at their dealerships..
It's not like the OHC engines made more power...they actually lost torque and push the HP higher up in the rpm range meaning owners had to rev the engines higher to get the same power as a OHV engine...which in turn causes more wear and tear on the engine...
They also didn't get any better fuel economy...so why in the hell would Ford mass produce an engine with double the moving parts to wear out that were bigger, heavier...for less torque with the same HP and gas mileage? Sure they have potential when built....but so does an OHV engine...so why bother hmmm???
To rip off their loyal customers.

The 7.3L specs out great. The problem I see is that it’s an architecture that only comes in heavy trucks. This means that not only will there be limited production, it will also have limited aftermarket support. Aftermarket doesn’t really cater much to engines specifically for the 3/4 and 1 ton gas market.
The 8.1L GM motor is a prime example. The previous Gen 6 BBC in trucks had enough DNA in common with previous Gen 4 and 5 that is still had some aftermarket support. The Gen 7 8.1L has faced a vicious circle of being ignored by aftermarket so it was ignored by hot rodders, so it was ignored even more by aftermarket.
The exceptions are when architectures interchange with cars and 1/2 tons. The 6L LS obviously interchanges parts with every other LS, but most heavy pickup trucks stay stock; with the motor getting upgraded once it’s yanked out. Many of the Hemi parts in 3/4 & 1 ton trucks interchange with the other stuff, but most people that want to hop up a Dodge 1 ton get the Cummins.
I hope I’m wrong, because I’d like to see the new 7.3L live up to its potential.
