  • His quest to collect vintage music has taken him to some of the strangest places in the world. "It's sad to see that the country doesn't have a digital music archive. Years of tradition and culture is rotting in the most unexpected places," says Vikram. He has sourced nearly 10,000 gramophone records from India dating as far back as 1902, when the first Indian gramophone record was created.

Congratulations Vikram. I am still looking for a turntable for 78 RPM as I still have about 300 such records and 3/4 of my friends have another 2/300 from the times of our Grand Parents....and a word on which software to suppress the SWISH of these records. Fortunately I found a good turntable for 45/33 so I can play those of my records...

Alright - looks like I can write the first comment :) Great work Vikram ! Look forward to a day when you can actually get some inroads into All India Radio's collections and democratize it. Looks like they don't even have a searchable library - our efforts to get my great grandfather's AIR recordings have been unsuccessful - they aren't even as old as your collection. Some day soon people will listen to AIM concerts at 9 PM instead of AIR :) ! Maybe launch an FM channel based on your AIM?

Wonderful initiative. But Classical Music was accessible to all, through free concerts in temples and festivals. Especially in Mysore, Ramanavami concerts were open to all, though backward of castes might have had to stand outside the house/hall/pandal, as was the social wont.
