Born in a newly independent India in one of the 4 Metropolises brought up English speaking, listening to Western Music or at best Hindi movie music on Vivid Bharathi. Never knew the beauty and the superior class of both Hindustani and Carnatic music. Though I did spend time listening to M.S. Subbulaxmi more than Lata Mangeshkar (thank you Dad). A few years back I was listenign to a Kolkata Literature Festival and had the pleasure of listening to Ustad Zakir Hussain. The man just fascinated me, and I got very keen on Indian classical, so much in his strength and charm. Soon I was sitting in front of him, and Rakesh Chaurasia in Atlanta was mesmerized. Had the fortune of Ustad ji signing my copy of the book. That was to follow with a second concert with Dave Holland. The only thing I came back with, was extreme regret that I was not listening to Indian classical when I was younger. I had the fortune of listening to Kaushiki Ji while searching UA-cam. Became an instant fan and if there was anything left, was completed by her interview on UA-cam channel' "Our Stupid Reactions". I was fascinated listening to Abby V's 73 Ragas and was charmed at younger generation expat knowing and performing so beautifully. A final thanks to Ms. Anuja Kamath for her wonderful videos on understanding Indian classical music, the structure of Ragas etc. Thank you for this interview and to Kaushiki Ji for helping me find my soul 🙂

Very rare to find conversation among millennials about our classical music. But, loved it. Particularly Abhijit's inputs. And Mrs. Chakraborty is a delight to hear.

Classical music is like the base the root for anyone who wants to branch into other genres.."Cool"popular music can be made by creative pursuits of musicians by creating music which adds a different dimension to music.More experimental music must be created by talented musicians.

This is such a beautiful session to stumble upon. Wonderfully meaningful conversations. Child in a toy store will be an image I'll be stuck with for the rest of my life. Wish the audio was able to capture the higher notes sung by Kaushiki ji. Also, the antakshari towards the end seems to be cut short.
With classical music being represented by such amazing people, like the two here, there's no more need to add any other ingredient to make classical cool. As long as people get out of their pre-conceived notion about 'classical', as rightly pointed out by Kaushiki ji, and close their eyes and listen to the music, one will not be able to escape from the magical web spun by these lovely artists!

How to make Classical cool? It is toòooo cool! Already😅
I think classical music is already cool. But it is a different kind of cool - which is not for everyone. Like rap or death metal - its cool but not for everyone. Jin logo ne uska ras payi woh kho jaate hai isme. It is a level of artistry which is as close to divine that humans can ever come to. But you know, that level of divine absorption is not for all. Pehle kuchh had tak sadhna chahiye samajhne ke liye. Just my thoughts.
Very disappointed as you prefer Abby to Abhishek Iyer such a meaningful name with such depth. I love my Iyer name. I wouldnt want to hide it. I think Sampath is also Iyer too.

Abby V's idea of making classical music "cool" is to wear oversized sweatshirts during performance. He couldn't be bothered to wear traditional attire when performing Carnatic music. What a disgrace.
