  • This videos covers exactly how to make your own intake for your 2014 onwards F56 Mini Cooper S. Its not the most complete video as I hadn't planned to make a how to guide, however so many people have asked for details of how I made it, I've stitched together a number of pictures and new videos, enjoy.
    Note you do cut up your stock airbox lid so it cannot be refitted again when putting car back to stock. You do however leave the lower half of the stock airbox in place.
    Tools required:
    Flat head screwdriver
    Torx head screwdrivers
    Dremel or similar cutting and sanding tool
    Items to purchase:
    2x jubilee clips to match your new air filter
    1x replacement filter, I used the K&N RU-4870 Universal Clamp-On Air Filter direct from K&N
    Bargain performance modification that also adds to the noise and appeal of your car.

      @@kd2833 sorry man I'm terrible but I'll explain it, so I took the top of the air box off cut a hole in the top of it that fits the filter that you have, put an extension on the filter so it sits down into the stock air box. And I sprayed the whole thing gloss black just to make it look a bit nicer. The new filter basically sits inside the stock airbox, it still gets air from around it and from the intake through the grill.

    @tweedbean Interesting approach to this by yourself, on the face of it very straight forward way of saving money enhancing sound and gaining a few extra BHP along the way. I have a couple of questions on this, are you still using this set-up? if not why? finally did you manage to knock up a heatsheild for this set-up and if so are you able to share what was used and were there any notable benefits?

      Hi Mark, thanks for watching the video. I dont actually own this F56 anymore now however I know this setup has been used on a couple of F56's that I know of for atleast 2 years with no issues. I sold my car with this setup too. I didnt get chance to make a heat shield, this could easily be done with a sheet of mild steel or abs/perspex creating literally a simple box around it similar to the mishimoto or K&n typhoon, its doesnt have to be a fully enclosed box, just protecting it agaisnt the sides with heat.

    So now you're engine is drawing in hot air from under the bonnet, when cool air is what you want. Brilliant.

    • @tweedbean
      @tweedbean  7 років тому +4

      The ONE thanks for your comment. it utilises the stock cold air feed from the front grill that feeds the lower half of the airbox which this filter sits in/on and also under testing by another f56 owner the air isn't as hot as you think. Airflow is decent in the f56 engine bay. I certainly don't suffer from heat soak as my figures from the dyno and scangauge show. Also if you watch the video it notes I'm going to also produce a heat shield to minimalist the chances of sucking in any warm air.

      Hi none of the guys that made one of these had issues, once you get going air flows under the bonnets. You could easily make one to protect it or there may even be an off the shelf version. My S made around 300bhp with that fitted and never had heat soak issues

BTW, i have an BMW X1 with the same b48 engine stock, witch 0 mods; and in sport mode it makes the same turbo flutter sound! (But as far as i know, with the air filter it gets louder!) • @tweedbean
      @tweedbean  6 років тому

      Firstly some people do this mod just for the noise, that’s their choice. Also with a simply made heatshield this will do the same job as the £700 gruppem intake that people, including myself in the past have bought. This gives them a cheaper solution. Doesn’t take much to knock up a heat shield

    • @calebpechumer2030
      @calebpechumer2030 6 років тому

      tweedbean I agree with you, but now you’re left with a cut up stock airbox that just doesn’t look pretty, also unless it’s enclosed in an actual box or there’s a seal that the hood will close down on, you’re probably sucking in hot air from the engine instead, not to mention some of the expensive ones are lubricated. Just seems like such a teenager ricey thing to do in my opinion.

    • @tweedbean
      @tweedbean  6 років тому +3

      Well we can agree to disagree, looking at my inlet temps, im having no hot air issues and im currently running one of the faster times down the 1/4 mile that I have from an F56, see my other videos and also running over 300bhp on the dyno no issue.

    • @calebpechumer2030
      @calebpechumer2030 6 років тому +3

      tweedbean well for one I think people are insane for spending money on a intake like the gruppem period, I’d just rather have like a middle ground between gruppem, and a cut up stock air box.. all I’m saying is if you had a nicer airbox intake setup you might make that 301bhp ;)
